The Queen in the Cave by Júlia Sardà. Candlewick, 2022. 9781536220544. 64pp. http://www.powells.com/book/-9781536220544?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Three sisters set out on an adventure into a dark forest without telling anyone, to find the queen who lives in the deepest cave there. What they encounter is both wondrous and a little freaky, and makes for page after page of absolutely amazing illustrations.
The Woman Who Turned Children Into Birds by David Almond, Illustrated by Laura Carlin. Candlewick, 2022. 9781536219968. 32pp. https://www.powells.com/book/-9781536219968?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Nanty Sloto comes to town and says she can turn children into birds. The adults aren't happy, but soon word spreads among the kids that it's true, and they all want a turn. Carlin's sketchy drawings really work with the Almond's mysterious prose, and the story has a very quick turn that will make kids happy and leave them wondering.
A Day That's Ours by Blake Nuto, Illustrated by Vyara Boyadjieva. Flying Eye Books, 2022. 9781838740757. 32pp. https://www.powells.com/book/-9781838740757?partnerid=34778&p_bt
A father and daughter steal a day and spend it doing nothing much but having such a great time. A joyous, colorful story that would make a great gift for dads and their daughters.
Well Done, Mommy Penguin by Chris Haughton. Candlewick, 2022. 9781536228656. 40pp. https://www.powells.com/book/-9781536228656?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Mommy penguin goes off to catch fish while the young penguin and its dad watch. The little penguin needs some reassurance that mommy is coming back, and there's a lot of discussion of how awesome mommy is (plus a harrowing moment or two with hungry seals). Houghton's drawings (I assume they're digital) and especially their colors plus the book's unusual font give this a unique look that drew me in.

Research 5.2: Self projects.
Ioana Harasim:
Inktober: I am not sure if this qualified as a personal project but Inktober is an interesting way to create work. This happens every year in October and the main idea is to create a drawing with ink base on a list of words. Some people create their own, but some people follow other people list.
Ioana participated in the 2015 challenge and upload some of her work to her portfolio. It is quite interesting to see her surrealist work.
Portrait: She also has a persona project, but this seems to be a long-term project and quite interesting, they are self-portrait. They are also surreal, with a lot of symbolism and this topic has been a constant for a couple of years.
Flor Kaneshiro
Mosca by Flor Kaneshiro 2020 (posted on instagram)
Inktober: she is participating in Inktober this year but with the list create by @jakemorrisonart and the list is called "Spirits and Mortals" challenge but she is not using ink (this is the standard idea) but watercolour that is consistent with her style.
I found this challenge very stressful, but I think it is quite inspiring to see the results.
Quarentin Zine by Various artist
Zine created by a group of artist to document their quarentine. (By Vyara Boyadjieva ) https://issuu.com/vyaraboyadjieva/docs/quaranzine
Document an event: In this case documented the quarantine. This is an interesting personal project. She decided to create one or two pages for her sketchbook that document her surroundings and the implications in quarantine.
This was later used to create a beautiful zine. I love this project, particularly because it is very genuine. You can see the different perspectives from each artist but there is no real limitations or framework but the actual event.
Cuarentena Essay by Launa Calvo
This is another example of a project created in quarantine. The result is quite simple but lovely. I am not sure how was the original brief, but the quarantine has been effective to create new artwork for many artists.
Adolfo Serra
Little Red Riding hood by Adolfo Serra
Redoing the classics: Serra published a book about the little red riding hood but the story of how this happens is quite interesting. He was finishing school and wanted to create some work for his portfolio so he could be hired to do other jobs, so he decided to create 5 pieces of work base on the little red riding hood story.
His specific instruction was to do it innovatively because if he can do something that so many people have done before different, he could prove that he can do other things creatively too.
So, he finished his 5 pieces of work and an editor so his work and offer him to publish the little red riding hood if he finishes it so he again decided to do a “no word” book.
In summary, He put a limit of 5 illustrations for his project but later, he also put another limitation of no text for the book.
Illustrated a book: he also illustrates poetry, in specific well-known poetry book creating also immensely powerful imaginaries for famous poems. This is also part of his projects but I could not find information as to how he created the brief for himself.
