Max is cleaning out the house and finds his old school uniform, he puts it on as a bit of joke thinking maybe the alphas would get a kick out of it or something. He totally doesn't expect Charles being all over him, the uniform reminding him of all the firsts of Max's he took 🥵

Max is cleaning out the attic, and he finds a box of old clothes and takes them down to go through it, half to laugh about them, half for the nostalgia, and also because maybe Riley might like one or two of them.

There is tons of stuff that kind of makes him a little sad when he looks at them. Shirts in drab colors, cheap jeans he never liked wearing, formless sweaters to hide his figure.

„Mama, most of these are so…sad.“ Riley holds up a very ugly grey-striped knit jumper.

„Yeah… I was sad while wearing them.“ Max watches Riley toss it onto the donate-pile.

There is a divide in this box, though, between before and after- before, those are the colorless clothes, the ones that scream depression. After, they get more colorful. There is a t-shirt Charles made for him, it’s tie-dye with „bestie“ written on the chest.

„I like this one,“ Riley smiles, holding it up to his own body. Max was older than him when he wore it, so it still looks too big, but he’ll grow into it.

„What’s this?“ Riley pulls out a piece of fabric, and Max’s heart stops for a second. Riley holds it up, and the ugly, mid-length skirt unfolds „I thought you never wore skirts when you were younger!“

Max shudders at the memory of sitting in a restaurant wearing it, his father talking about him like he’s not there, alphas commenting on his figure and cooking skills like he’s a doll, Daniil sitting there not talking to him.

„I didn’t.“ He grabs it from Riley’s hand and tosses it onto the landfill-pile. Riley follows it with his eyes. „My father made me wear it once.“

He has a policy of not lying to his pups about feelings and his past, and Riley is old enough to understand. Immediately, his eyebrows furrow. „Well, fuck it then.“

It makes Max smile, the swear word included.

„Ohh, look!“ Riley reaches and pulls out something else.

It’s Max’s school uniform, a white button down, a fine wool-knit jumper, the pleated skirt. Riley coos at it. „That’s so vintage, I love it!“

Max snorts. „Vintage?“

It’s the last uniform he had for school, much too big for Riley. A flood of memories overcomes Max as Riley runs his fingers over the pleated skirt. „That must have looked so cute on you.“

„It did,“ Charles says from the doorway. He must have sneaked up on them, distracted as they.

„Maman, look!“ Riley beams, „Did you have one like this too?“

„Yeah, of course.“ Charles saunters over to them, his hand landing warmly on Max’s shoulder. „But I used to roll up the waistband so it looked shorter.“

That makes Riley giggle.

„I didn’t do that,“ Max tells him, „And neither should you.“ Although he knows Riley would never. He reminds Max of himself like that.

„Actually,“ Charles hums, „I think I still have my cheerleader uniform. I think it’s in the depths of my closet somewhere.“ As intentioned, Riley’s eyes light up immediately. „Can I go look for it?“

„Yeah! It should be on a hanger.“

Riley dashes off, leaving the two of them alone. Charles sinks down to the floor next to Max and surprises him with a kiss. Max purrs into it. He knows Charles is up to something, especially when he half-climbs into Max’s lap to straddle him.

„You should put it on,“ he purrs, kissing Max’s neck.

„What?“ It comes out squeakier than expected. When Max realizes Charles is referring to the school uniform, he shakes his head violently. „It won’t fit!“

„It will!“ Charles pulls away, looking at him with a glint in his eyes. „…please?“

„Why?“ Max asks, mildly bewildered by the intensity of this request. Slow heat is rising in the bottom of his stomach as Charles is grinding down on him. He wraps his arms around him and holds on to his thighs, squeezing lightly.

„Because…,“ Charles trails his fingertips up Max’s shoulders, „That’s what you were wearing for most of our first times.“

Max feels himself blush. „Oh!“

„Yeah… I still have very fond memories of fingering you under that skirt,“ Charles purrs with a smirk, his fingertips now running along the neckline of Max’s shirt. „…and of unbuttoning that shirt.“

Max is too stunned to speak, so he just tips his head up in an offer for a kiss. Charles takes the offer. It’s true, there were many, many times when they made out while Max was wearing this outfit. There are lots of memories attached to it; not many of them have to do with actual school.

They make out for a moment, right until there are footsteps on the staircase. Charles lets out a little groan and slowly slides off of Max’s lap, giving him a heated grin. Max also feels slightly out of breath.

Riley barges in, Charles’ old red and white cheerleading uniform in hand. „I found it!“

„Great!“ Charles rises to his feet. „I could try it on, see if it still fits me.“ He gives Max a wink, then tells Riley, „Your papa must have a matching alpha one somewhere.“ He holds the skirt up to his hips, and Max has to look away so he doesn’t blush even harder.

„You could have a Highschool dress-up party!“ Riley suggests innocently.

Charles gives Max a smirk and wiggles his hips, making the pleated skirt swing back and forth. „Yeah, maybe we should.“

He calls Max from the car, all happy and excited to see him, and Max is soooo excited to finally see Charles again too… they start talking while on the phone but then Charles is like „omg I will tell you everything later, let’s not talk about it yet!“ even though they know they would always find smth to talk about!

Charles sometimes bringing Max little gifts, a bead necklace, a chocolate bar, stuff like that! The first thing they do is just cuddle for ages and talk about stuff, they tell each other alllll the details about everything, just nesting together and enjoying each other’s presence.

„I’m staying home from work today,“ Charles declared over his toast and eggs.

Max perked up happily. „Can you just do that?“

Charles shrugged with a smirk. „I’m the boss, I can do what I want.“

Max knew this wasn’t the full truth; they had just finished up an important campaign, and Charles had worked a lot lately, staying in the office until eight, sometimes nine in the evening, coming home only to shower and have Max force dinner down his throat. He was good at covering the dark circles under his eyes and the stress pimples on his chin with make-up, but they were there.

„What do you want to do today then?“

Charles leaned back with a big smile, closing his eyes. „Absolutely nothing.“

„Perfect,“ Charles sighed an hour later, buried in a cozy nest. His arms were wrapped around Max, and Max happily snuggled against him. Everyone else was out for work or class, and it was just them. „This is exactly what I wanted,“ Charles purred, pulling Max even closer.

„Like old times,“ Max smiled, burying his face in the crook of Charles’ neck and inhaling his scent. „Should we put on Cruel Intentions?“

Charles let out a giggle. „And practice kissing?“

„Yeah,“ Max laughed, playfully nipping at Charles’ neck.

Charles let out a sigh. „Maybe later… I want to enjoy this for a little longer first.“

„Okay,“ Max whispered

Charles was asleep within two minutes, and Max let him sleep, just holding him, fondly remembering all the times they did this as teenagers.

This so so much! Every time we got a Charles POV in b,w I was all 🥺 no baby he loves you too he just doesn’t know it yet.

You‘re just such an amazing writer and I have to reread to basically quote back your work at you but my favorite parts that I can remember more or less were

- when Charles told Mac that he preferred Omegas & Betas when they visited his horse and how he was all insecure and if you no longer want to fool around/ be around me 😔☹️ but Max was all no I still want to

- the party aftermath, Max going to Daniel‘s room, the look Charles gives him, him sleeping with Michael but hoping Max won’t hear them, the shower back home and ALL the feelings that followed

- and the last thing I remember at the top of my head, when Charles tells Max that he loves him after Max and Daniel bonded and he can smell how compatible they are and his heart breaks because he knew but feelings are this pesky little things that still happen and Max tells him that he loves him back and that he thinks that people can love more than one person 🥺😍

Sometimes, it felt like these two were the main pairing of blood, water. Charles' love for Max is just so tender and sweet and aaaaaaaaah it makes me go a little insane everytime I think about it. Daniel and Max might be mates, but Charles and Max are also soulmates (like Daniel and Michael).

When you say Charles is in love with vv max, when Max gets with Daniel, is there a feeling of loss for Charles? And whenc harles finds pierre and later Michael, is he not in love with Max ad much anymore?

There is definitely a sense of loss for Charles. But I think love isn't necessarily on a more/less scale- it can change from romantic to platonic, and everything in between. So Charles still loves Max (and Max loves him back), they're best friends, they are life partners in a way.

I know you were probably looking for some gay!VV, but I’m in my feels about VV!max and Charles because I mentioned them in Happy Endings… and it just makes me so emotional how in love Charles is with max and max just never really notices 😭 not until much later anyway.

a few weeks back i blacked out and when i came to, i had reread all of virtues. so i apologize if this is long and rambling, but i have A Lot Of Feelings about vv!max (and riley)

tw for mentions of weight, body image, and disordered eating

keep in mind that they first time i read virtues, i ended up accidentally reading it in chronological order because b,w was the first work in the series i came across. so i didn't know that while maxiel was the ultimate goal, there was also some lestappen endgame in the later parts.

case in point: the very first chapter of b,w i was mortally wounded and dealt 10 psychic damage when i realized (the second time around) that charles purposefully ordered more food than he knew he could eat just so he could offer the rest to max. just...charles still caring for max and being able to clock what was going on despite them not being real "friends" at that point--i think i would take it less personally if you just came to my house and murdered me irl next time.

i also remember reading an old ask a while back asking about each of the pack member's favorite foods. and i believe (iirc) you had said that max's was mashed potatoes. and it makes the one dinner scene in b,w so much more, like, devastating when max is going to give himself another helping but is then told that he's had enough.

and it makes me think that those times where he'd go have dinner at charles' house with his family, it would raise a few eyebrows. because charles' parents know max. they remember him. and here he is minimally filling his plate and politely declining when they ask if he'd like any more. so after he leaves to go home, they're concerned and asking charles like, "what's going on? he eats like a bird." and charles wants to tell them, but feels it's not his place to go behind max's back like that.

and even after the events of b,w and after max moves in with daniel and michael, it...takes him awhile to let his relationship with food begin to heal. and while the pack is more body positive, i feel like max sits more firmly in the camp of body neutrality. he no longer feels bad about how he looks, per se, but he rarely outright says he looks good either. and he believes that no one ever has to look good. his body is what it is. it's useful in a lot of ways--gets him where he needs to go, allows him to care for his pack and his pups--and he chooses to just not think about it if he doesn't have to.

however, as a parent (and even before he was a parent but quickly deemed the primary cook of the pack), a facet of his love manifests as him asking the pups and the others, "did you get enough to eat?" being met with soft sighs but genuine smiles and answers of "yes, max/yes, mama." and he's always at the ready refill plates and send guests home with plenty of leftovers.

so then during the stressful period where he and daniel are in the midst of the triplets being diagnosed, you had mentioned that the strife felt within the pack is a catalyst for riley developing his own disordered eating habits. and it makes max absolutely sick with worry and guilt, the ideas of "it's my fault," and "i'm turning into the parent i always swore i'd never become." it being yet another thing that keeps him awake at night during that time, until daniel (or charles, really) pulls him aside like "you need to tell me what's going through your head. or else we're never going to find a way to go about approaching this issue."

Where to even begin! You picked up on so much here.

In his teens, Max has a very difficult relationship with food, but luckily he has at least some emotional ressources/resilience to saves him from completely spiraling into a full eating disorder.

Charles family definitely notice, and I think Charles' parents bring them snacks much more often when Max is around, offer him more food etc. Charles also tells them that Max has to do all the cooking at home, so Pascale always cooks big dinners when Max stays over.

I love what you said about body neutrality, because to reach that would be such a huge step for Max. His body is good because it carries him, it carries his pups, it carries his pack. It doesn't always have to be absolute self-love, sometimes self-acceptance is a step forward.

Food is definitely a love language for Max. He always makes sure everyone is fed, especially his kids. He never forbids them from getting snacks, and even candy and baked goods are always openly available. Which is why Riley having issues with food would just hit him even harder, because it would feel like he failed him and make him absolutely sick with worry.

With all of the storylines around the pups, one of my biggest intentions is to show that even good parents make mistakes, or that sometimes things out of their control happen which fuck up the child in some ways. But if they're good parents, they will be there for their kid and be supportive. And Max (and Daniel, and Charles, and all of them) is supportive of Riley, gets him to a doctor, a psychologist, makes sure to educate himself and support Riley however he can. Daniel shows up, picks him up from school, sometimes just drives by to let him eat in the car when he feels too anxious, and they all just work together to help him, which in turn heals Max's inner child a bit as well.
