I have had this idea percolating in my brain for ages so buckle up.

Content warning: Mention of blood, character death, angst.

"No- NO!" Kyler shouted, dashing to Petra's side.

The dragon's last flame had made her wilt like a leaf, and she wasn't rising again. In the background Balot and Reinhardt continued to battle the beast, spilling its lifeblood on the charred rocks. Kyler fell to his knees next to Petra muttering to himself.

"Petra, Petra speak to me." He begged.

"..." Petra's breathing was soft, shallow, barely noticeable. She seemed to be trying to whisper, but was so hurt.

"Petra, please." Kyler's eyes stung hot as he grabbed and gripped her wrist tightly.

"love..." She breathed quietly, pained.

"Yes?! Don't worry Petra, I'll heal you, it's going to be okay." Kyler fumbled with his free hand for the Hearthkeeper's symbol, the other still gripping her gauntleted wrist.

"love... you..." Petra exhaled with finality, causing the tears Kyler was fighting to overflow.

Behind him the dragon bellowed a final cry as well, but the young cleric barely noticed. He tried to pray, to call Petra's soul back, to entreat Grandfather Death to let her stay, but he was shaking so hard, hyperventilating, that the words wouldn't come. His throat closed and he sobbed as the dragon crashed to the ground. With a cry of deep, soul-rending pain Kyler forced himself to heal Petra, pushing the power he'd been bestowed into her body. The warm orange glow enveloped her and seeped in and then...

Nothing.

He tried again, his prayers unintelligible as he cried. Balot and Reinhardt approached slowly, but Kyler couldn't pay them any mind. Over and over and over again he shoved magic from himself into Petra, and none of it caused any change. Finally Kyler crumpled, laying his head on Petra's breastplate covered in smoke and char and unleashing all the sorrow he had left. Balot watched quietly while Reinhardt made the sign of the Taker, then Tender, and bowed to the corpse of their friend.

"I am sorry, Kyler." Balot said as the young Cleric's sobs quieted. "Reinhardt and I will help you lay her to rest. I know you loved her, and you have made such a beautiful place for her."

Kyler raised his head slowly, still sniffling, and saw for the first time what had happened. A wide circle of ground all around him had grown plants, knee heigh grass, flowers, and even a shrub or two, standing out in the barren fire-scorched lands.

Balot did most of the digging while Reinhardt prepared the rites to the best of his abilities. For a paladin of noble birth, Balot certainly never shied from "dirty" work, and Kyler was glad for the older barbarian's experience with burial rites.

As soon as the dirt was placed over Petra, it began to spring to life again and they could barely shovel fast enough to avoid burying any more of the plants. As soon as it was settled into place it was gone, grass growing to cover the grave well. The three spent the rest of the days dying light erecting a marker stone and claiming trophies from the dragon's corpse.

Decades later, when the rest of the land had recovered, the marker still stood and nearby, a smaller marker over a larger grave for a dragon that had refused to rot.

A desperate cleric slamming every healing spell so hard to bring someone back to life the ground is forced to grow plants and flowers around the body.

████ ██████████, codenamed Ghost, is a specially engineered elite operative who volunteered to undergo extensive biological modifications in order to neutralize subject Z-13, Sebastian Solace, as well as any other hostile entities that show resistance. Previous attempts to deal with Z-13 have consistently failed, prompting the creation of a subject with abilities specifically designed to match and surpass those of Z-13. Subject primarily received genetic material sourced from Vultus Limunaria, commonly referred to as Searchlights. This infusion of DNA, combined with traces from other species, has altered his appearance and physiology as expected, granting him the unique abilities required for his mission. Urbanshade researchers, bound by contractual obligations, are expected to reverse these modifications if Ghost completes his mission within the allocated timeframe while these alterations remain reversible. The front of his body is dominated by a gaping mouth that begins at his face and stretches down his entire torso, ending just above his hips, which is a reflection of Searchlight physiology. This mouth serves as his primary weapon in combat, capable of projecting harpoon-like tendrils that can latch onto targets and reel them in with terrifying force. Inside his torso, at the base of the mouth, is an esophagus-like structure used to retract the harpoons and pull his prey into his maw. The design of his upper body is mostly hollow, aside from thick layers of muscles, to minimize damage to vital organs which are located lower in his body for better protection. His eyes are highly reflective, being adapted to low-light environments, enhancing his ability to detect movement in the shadows of the Blacksite. Given Z-13's known lethality and previous success at evading capture, Ghost has been trained to operate independently of traditional support, with limited direct communication back to Urbanshade during this operation. His combat style is based on ambush tactics, using his speed and strength to overwhelm Z-13 in close combat before the subject has time to retaliate. His agility, combined with his biological weaponry, makes Ghost the deadliest operative Urbanshade has ever produced—an apex predator designed for a mission inconceivable for standard operatives. Therefore, in the event operative Ghost defects or becomes a threat, a contingency plan has been put in place. A remotely detonated bomb, utilizing technology from the Prisoner Diving Gear (PDG), has been implanted in an undisclosed location in his body. This device is designed to neutralize Ghost upon receiving a signal from HQ, ensuring that the blast is powerful enough to incapacitate him without causing damage to surrounding infrastructure.
