This can't be explained without some audio (as I was never taught phonetic alphabets) so I did some recordings. So, here we go, @vineee2000 (and all other Russian speaking people)
I had some Russian studies in my teens but I was able to attend only a few times and it was ages ago, but I remember teacher saying that learning how to pronounce Russian is easy to East-Finns due to our similarities in dialect vs Russian.
All Finnish words ending with i-sound will in my East-Savonian dialect turn into j-sound; like vesi = vesj (water). This final j pronounces a bit like й in Russian, at least the idea is same, like Сергей = Sergej.
The words are first in Finnish and then 3 times in my home area dialect. I have put an extra emphasis on the J-sound mimicking й because in the real spoken language it is subtle and thus mimickers miss it. The letter before j changes the pronunciation a bit.
The words are
Vati = Vatj (Washin bin, deep plate) Vesi = Vesj (Water) Veli = Velj (Brother) Äiti = Äetj (Mother) Lasi = Lasj (Glass) Kasvi = Kasvj (Plant) Peti = Petj (Bed) Regional differences within the dialect area do exist to such extend that when Kalevala was translated to Savo dialect, the translators had to settle to "generic Savonian dialect" which they made up themselves. So, I'm speaking only as an native East and North-East dialect speaker.

i have a question about your 'finnish doesnt have accents' post
are there variations within a region that is considered to have the same dialect? like for example in cities do people who are more 'working class' sound different from people who are more 'upper class' even though theyre from the same city. or do people who are from rural areas sound different to people from a city even if they dont live far away from each other
i know that not everywhere puts as much emphasis on class division as places like britain do and maybe in finland 'countryside' and 'city' are considered separate dialects anyway but if there are differences within a dialect how are they described?
i dont want this to come across as me trying to 'prove that finnish does have accents actually' because its really not. i just find it fascinating how different languages are built up and hearing that a language doesnt have the concept of accents kind of surprised me so im sorry if thats how it sounds
Hi! And don't worry, I don't think your message sounds rude at all!
To your questions I would say: no. There is no working class vs. upper class division in Finland, at least not anymore. The spoken language sounds the same no matter how much money you make, and the countryside doesn't differ from the city at all.
The only differences within a dialect I know of is older people vs. younger people. Some dialects might also have tiny regional differences to them within a region. I speak one subdialect of the Savo dialect myself, and my area is quite big and what's nowadays considered part of this city, used to be smaller towns or villages maybe ~20 years ago. The dialect is the same in all, but there are slight differences to which letters are used. I googled this a bit as I'm not certain how it goes as I speak a mixture of these, but here's an example I found:
The word for 'forest' is "metsä' in Finnish, and to say "in a/the forest" it's "metsässä". But in Eastern Finland, we don't really like the -ts- combo. So there are two different ways of saying those words inside this region:
mehtä -> mehässä or mehtä -> metässä
In some other dialects in Finnish, it become mettä -> metässä, which I also use often despite it not even being my original dialect. When I was working at a place where we had lots of older visitors (who were in their 50-70s) from all over this region, I eventually started to notice that I started to pick up this older, even stronger way of speaking Savo dialect. Again, it's about which letters you leave out, switch or add, because the pronunciation is always the same, but I'd say this is the difference between older vs. younger people speaking. And I always say that nowadays I speak so that I sounds like a 60 year old man because of the way I use my dialect lol
More under the cut, my answer got a bit too long as usual...
Here's another word: kylmä. Which means "cold", often I say "kylymä" where that extra vowel is a speciality of a few Finnish dialects. But if I'm going for a really strong Savo, much closer to the actual Savo dialect which I do not speak naturally, then I switch that vowel to another one and it becomes: "kylömä".
Or if twisting the words even more, the partitive case is "kylmää" in the written (standard) Finnish, but in my dialect you can say that as "kylymää", "kylmee", "kylymee" or "kylömää". The reason why I speak of dialects and not accents is that anyone from any region in Finland saying this, will have the "accent" the exact same and they will sound Savonian by just reading those out loud. You don't need an accent to fake a dialect in Finnish, you just need to know the features and quirks of a dialect which is such a complicated thing I personally cannot imitate other dialects. I can only somewhat imitate the actual Savo dialect, but I still don't get it to be perfect because I did not grow up talking that dialect, only a version of it. (But some people are really good at remembering these features and can imitate other dialects really well, and I find that super fun to listen to :D)
The fun thing about Finnish is also that whenever we have weird things happening in a dialect - we write those differences down. Because everything is spelled the way it's pronounced, and everything is pronounced the way it's spelled. You can often tell someone's region from their writing if they write in the spoken language, but you can't tell where someone grew up in if they are speaking another dialect because the dialects don't have accents that would expose it. The same way you cannot tell if someone's from the countryside or city, you can only tell which city area they most likely live in because of the dialect they speak (also foreigners moving here usually pick up the dialect of their region, but might still speak Finnish with the accent of their own mothertongue), and you also cannot tell anyone's income based on the way they speak.
I've heard that in the UK people sometimes have to fake their accent if they're working class or such as it might affect the way they are treated/if they're gonna offered a job or not, but we don't have anything like that here. In fact, the whole thought is so bizarre to me because Finnish has no accents and I can't even imagine what it would be like to try and do an accent not natural to me. The closest I can imagine is switching to more cleaner version of Finnish, something resembling the written Finnish but not too much because also the written Finnish sounds really really weird when spoken unless it's the president, prime minister or news reporters on TV doing so. (I often clen up my dialect a bit if I'm speaking with someone who might not be that familiar with my dialect, as sometimes it could be a bit difficult to understand - and also because people often have the tendency to call this dialect very cute and it makes me feel like I'm infantilized and not maybe taken so seriously, which doesn't help when I'm already also a babyface :DD But that's a whole different story already!)
Okay, my answer got a bit long and I'm honestly not sure if I even answered anything you were asking about lol. But feel free to elaborate or ask more if any of this was too confusing. I literally don't really know when e.g. with English something is an accent and when it's a dialect, as Finnish only has dialects but I know for sure that e.g. UK, US and AU Eng are accents and not dialects. But where does e.g. Scottish fall in? Is that an accent or a dialect? Or all the different regions in the USA alone, are those dialects, or are there both? And what defines it which is which if there are both accents and dialects? Knowing answers to these would probably make me understand the whole "everyone has an accent" thing a lot better.

Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
gracefully leaving off the ones I haven't done anything with since the last time I did this tag bc things sit in my documents for years and years as I ping-pong around... also admitting right now the vast majority of these are just "oh let's see where this goes" bc long-form is not remotely my strong suit and I'm fine owning that :P which is to say. probably I can give snippets but not a LOT of detail on where it's going ahaha

29.02. 22:11 | Ilo Pisara vs Savo Bears 6 - 5
Ladies and gentlemen, gather 'round as I regale you with the tale of Ilo Pisara's latest escapade on ice—a spectacle that ended in a heart-pounding 6-5 victory over Savo Bears. It was like watching a group of penguins trying to fly; somehow, they managed it, but boy, did it look awkward. Teppo Winnipeg turned into our very own Picasso with the puck—crafting plays like masterpieces but defending about as well as a wet paper bag holds groceries. With one goal and three assists, he was more offensively minded than teenagers at their first concert. Yuri Tarde? More like Yuri "On Time," netting three goals including the game-winner in overtime! His performance was so bright; we might need sunglasses next time we watch him play. Macho Fantastico lived up to his name—part superhero, part soap opera star—with two goals and dazzling moves that left us all questioning reality. However, his giveaways were akin to Oprah giving away cars—"You get a puck! You get a puck!" And let’s not forget Jani Saari between the pipes—facing shots like he had beef with every single one. Five got past him sure—but without those crucial saves? We'd be singing sadder tunes tonight. In conclusion: A win is a win—even if it looked less like professional hockey and more like an avant-garde interpretive dance routine on ice. Onward Ilo Pisara! Let's aim for dominance—or at least entertaining chaos—in our next outing.

One of my favourite fun-facts about the Western vs. Eastern dialects is that they most likely don't even have the same roots. Eastern dialects, mainly the Savonian ones, have the same roots as the Karelian language (not the dialect, but the language spoken in Karelian areas in Russia even today), so some sort of a proto-Karelian. Western dialects don't have that, they originate just from proto-Finnic or something, I can't find anything about how to call this, only about the Eastern dialects, so feel free to correct me if you have more info. (My source is English Wikipedia, and its source is this article. It's in Finnish only, tho, but it's an interesting one and focuses on the history of Finnish in general.)
Because of this, I have heard that people who speak Eastern dialects find it easier to understand Karelian languages, and they might seem uncomprehensable to those speaking Western dialects. As someone who grew up speaking one version of a Savo dialect, I can confirm that I can pretty much read it and understand what it says because many of the normal features are what are seen as the quirks in Savo dialects.
Btw if I'm not entirely mistaken, those maps mentioned in OP's answer are from this website. The website is down but thank goodness people have archived the full website and the maps are still fully available there! This website is, also, in Finnish only but the maps could still be interesting even to those who don't speak Finnish.
what is wrong with your language.....
What IS wrong with Finnish?
The asks keep on getting more interesting!
This might be a bit off-topic but every time someone asks why Finnish is how it is I always blame Mikael Agricola. He did much of the work on the oldest standardized version of the Finnish language and is known for incorporating the (wildly different) Eastern and Western dialects into his work. This is why, for example, while the people in the West say "mettä" and the people in the East say "mehtä", the word for "forest" in the standard Finnish language is "metsä" (where did they even get this from...)

Finland City Flag Wars: Round 1
This tournament is being held in honor of Finnish flags winning two recent tournaments in a row: South Ostrobothnia in the Regional Flag Wars and Helsinki in the Olympic Flag Wars! I will eventually be holding a tournament focusing on Finnish municipal heraldry, as there are many cities in Finland with unique coats of arms. I held a poll recently to see which tournament my followers were more interested in, and the city flag tournament won, but the poll was close enough that I’ve decided to do the heraldry tournament as well sometime. Let me know in the comments which city in Finland has the best flag!
Round 1:
1. Pori, Satakunta vs. Vantaa, Uusimaa vs. Vårdö, Åland
2. Hamina, Kymenlaakso vs. Kokkola, Central Ostrobothnia vs. Mariehamn, Åland
3. Joensuu, North Karelia vs. Pyhäranta, Southwest Finland vs. Hyvinkää, Uusimaa
4. Raseborg, Uusimaa vs. Föglö, Åland vs. Raisio, Southwest Finland
5. Rauma, Satakunta vs. Oulu, North Ostrobothnia vs. Vaasa, Ostrobothnia
6. Tampere, Pirkanmaa vs. Lieksa, North Karelia vs. Pyhäjoki, North Ostrobothnia vs. Turku, Southwest Finland
7. Saarijärvi, Central Finland vs. Rusko, Southwest Finland vs. Heinola, Päijät-Häme vs. Iisalmi, North Savo
8. Rovaniemi, Lapland vs. Helsinki, Uusimaa vs. Kimitoön, Southwest Finland vs. Jakobstad, Ostrobothnia

Forever thinking of how underused other students in the College of Winterhold Questline were. Like, imagine taking the whole group to the Labyrinthian, seeing what happened to Savos’ group, mirroring the decades old tragedy of losing your companions and even be confronted with the same choice of having to sacrifice one of them to get the Staff?
Or, if you are careful enough, you can save everyone. You defeat Morokei, you put the whole thing to rest and say to the fading ghost of Aren I will not repeat your mistakes. I will not let the past kill me and my friends.
And he finally passes away as there is no need to haunt the halls of Labyrinthian any longer. He is content in his knowledge: the College will be in safe hands.
#college of winterhold#the elder scrolls#skyrim#savos aren#I know that half of college content was scraped or underdeveloped but the PARALLEL WAS RIGHT THERE#the drama of confronting Savos' ghost in the Labyrinthian#the group dynamics before and after Eye of Magnus business#The cheerfull first year students vs a bunch of traumatised wizards left alone to clean up the mess because none of the authoritive figures#who were suppossed to protect and guide them#stepped up

A while back I did a calculation on how large Tamriel was compared to the real world in lore, and using that scale I have now made this to show just how downscaled everything in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is compared to the lore (just look at the Legends art of Odahviing and the giants and mammoths! Though they pale compared to Skyrim itself!). Yes, that tiny speck in the circle is the approximate size of the in-game map compared to what it is in lore (well, roughly so, given that it is not an exact measurement). Even Skyrim as a whole is a lot harsher and mountainous than it is portrayed in the game (which is ironic, because if they filled the world with mountains blocking the distance, you wouldn’t notice the short draw distance as much...).
Yeah, so we get to about 0,0043%ish of Skyrim in the game itself unless my calculations are way off (could be, I haven’t used more than the most basic math since lockdown began, and math was always my worst subject...). Which explains why our characters are only allowed to ask about 0,0043% of the questions they should be asking (about the duel with Torygg to all the witnesses, about wtf Karliah thinks she’s doing, about Savos Aren’s being highly sus and a bad Arch-Mage, bringing up the Ghost of Old Hroldan’s memories of Hjalti vs “Talos of Atmora”, where the heck all the literature written in the 200 years since Oblivion have gone, since so much is pre-Oblivion stuff, and...).
