Double Overtime -- extended author's notes

as with the last long fic I wrote, I have some extended author's notes on the fic haha. posting them to Tumblr was fun the last time, so without further ado:

Hockey Details

I went into this set up being like ‘i know a reverse sweep isn’t likely but it IS dramatic so i’ll do it’ and then i watched in awe/horror as the Panther’s 3-0 lead shrunk down to 3-3 and the oilers were set to pull of a reverse sweep (and spoil the end of my fanfic.). The oilers ALMOST did it but whiffed it at the end. Still, wild timing for me. We’re living in one of Connor McDavid’s failed timeloops. 

I have a like, novice level understanding of hockey but a huge amount of enthusiasm. A time loop was the best plot to get around that– i only have to focus on one hockey match rather than the logistics of an entire season or more. There’s still a lot more i could do if i understood the game more, but hey, i was here for the fights and i provided for myself. 

The Baratie Steelheads and the Syrup Village Sockeyes aren’t the most fitting names for the both (types of salmon), but they are names that were on the Seattle Kraken’s original team name shortlist, so it was an easter egg for myself.

Sanji’s entire contract thing is definitely over the top plot contrivance, but there’s a certain amount of over the top required when adapting his backstory. The Steelheads leaving Baratie is inspired by the poor Arizona Coyotes being relocated. RIP to the Coyotes, coolest jerseys in the league squandered by poor management

Most the fights were actually based on hockey clips from twitter lol. thanks for the insp hockey

Character Details

I didn’t include all the character details for the strawhats, primarily because it’s Sanji’s POV and he’s mostly focused on zoro. But, for the list, with more details about characters with less screentime lol:

Luffy: Captain, Center. I think he’s pretty versatile and also sometimes plays LW/RW, but he’s primarily the Strawhats center and captain, with a huge near-elastic reach

Zoro: Defenseman, though a particularly offensive d-man and an enforcer. Roughly, this is basically an unofficial role for the guy who starts fights with people who make dirty plays. 

Nami: Technically the social media manager of the team, acts more like the team’s overall manager. Team manager kind of seems like a lazy spot to put her in, but i like to think she’s a travel enthusiast and expenses it all on the company card lol

Usopp: LW/RW, and one of the top scorers when he’s backed up properly. Pretty underrated when initially being recruited, but shines under the Pirates’ strategy

Sanji: LW, and a pest. Basically he annoys people into fighting him HAHA. the perfect role for him. I wanted him to be LW primarily for the whole pirate king’s wings energy

Vivi: owner of the alabasta ducks! And a former olympic figure skater. Her and nami have a complicated on again / off again relationship, which mostly comes up whenever there’s a Ducks vs Pirates game (and they either get together / break up)

Chopper: ok, chopper was a complicated decision. I was caught between him being a gentle giant of a defenseman VS him being team doctor, but in the end decided that doctor required less justification

Robin: Robin was difficult to fit in. I ended up deciding on her being the Pirates local commentator. Commentator is fun at the least because there’s a lot of context/history/etc of the players on the ice you need to know to be good at the job, and i think she’d be HILARIOUS

Franky: Goalie! Franky fits well as goalie, first of all because of how beefy goalie equipment is, and second of all because a goalie with a big personality is quite fun. There’s something extremely fitting about him doing the ‘super’ move with leg guards

Brook is the Pirates DJ! What Else. i think he picks great songs for the stadium. zoro tells him to use mamma mia as sanji’s song and sanji nearly sends him into an early grave.

Jinbe: coach He was initially the goalie in a very early draft, but coach makes sense in terms of how he’d be able to support the team and his general level headedness. There’s a lot of clips of Paul Maurice, the Panther’s current coach, having this absolutely chill energy about him that’d work so well

Plotting/Planning Thoughts

I decided on ‘Double Overtime’ as the title pretty quickly, just because it’s (a) a hockey term and (b) a fun way to describe two people (double) caught in a time loop (overtime). The emphasis on double overtime as a win condition came after the title

I decided on ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Waterloo’ as the main song insp for these early on. Mamma Mia itself is this good mix of an upbeat song that’s just a bit sad and just a bit ominous, and the lyrics can be fun for a time loop (‘here I go again’). Waterloo was always the credits song (‘i feel like i win when I lose’ come on now)

I decided that I’d post in early June like the actual Stanley Cups, and 6/6 was decided on as the in-date and IRL start of the time loop because it’s Germa Day (66): something kind of poetic about Germa fucking up their perfect win on Germa day 

Time Loop Win Condition

The time loop win condition! Zoro was always going to win and Sanji was always going to lose, but the details took a bit to figure out. I knew it was going to incorporate (a) him trusting Zoro and reaching out for help (impossible task for him), (b) him wanting to play hockey on a team that doesn’t hate him, (c) remix of Sanji’s Baratie arc, and (d) the concept of double overtime. 

There was a lot of changing around on what exactly Sanji would be able to do; initial drafts actually had him coming out pretty clean from the double overtime deal (saving the Baratie) but that didn’t feel earned, I liked the kind of bittersweet selfish sacrifice of letting the team go, otherwise it’d feel a bit too contrived. this is already a late reveal loophole— it wouldn’t feel earned without that tinge of regret 

In the end i liked what I went with, though I think I could’ve built up a little bit more before hand, and had a bit more emotional consequence to Baratie’s relocation. But ive written like, FIVE separate sad zeff phone calls in the last few months, i decided i had Enough. I had to Limit Myself. Only one sad zeff phone call this time for me ok

things to do differently

Look at me!!! Finishing a fic before i post!!! This was good actually, and meant the pacing was better than what i did with my last long fic lmao. Still had some issues imo, but considerably stronger on keeping scenes regularly paced. I should always do this.

IMO after reread (after it being finished for weeks) i think one of the weaker points is just really sanji’s apology– zoro figures out the duel time loop deal fairly fast (benefit of relying on other people) and folds pretty easily. I mean he’s unfortunately smitten but it doesn’t change the fact that he was hurt. There’s a specific degree of pulled punches I do sometimes with emotional moments that I’d like to get better at, but live and learn lol

Intermission 

Hey i had a lot of notes on zoro’s POV the entire time loop. and also a lot of thoughts on the fade to black scene of my T rated fanfic. There were three main points I wanted to explore with Zoro’s POV

First: there’s a fun contrast with Zoro (VS Sanji) both feeling utterly alone as the lone person in the time loop and having an actual support network. Sanji talks to basically Iva, Zoro, and Reiju only during his loop, and all of them he keeps at arm’s length, but Zoro is both deadset on winning for his team, and lets his team helps him. Sanji is meanwhile stewing in his own anger alone, despite knowing he’s not the only person stuck there

Second: Zoro is way more of a time loop speedrunner. He has the timeline down pat. He thinks about the details of the game. He’s shaving off minutes of conversations. Sanji doesn’t plan as much, primarily because Zoro’s an unknown that shakes up the loop too much. 

Third: the hookup lol. i liked the idea of their hookup being good but limited emotionally due to how closed off and testy sanji still is about the time loop– in the end an extension of him refusing to show zoro his own injuries. There is that enticing flash of vulnerability at the end, but then Zoro’s back to square one. 

One of the first times i’ve written not like, funny porn for Z/S (which is my default), so look at me. Varying the porn i guess. congrats

epilogue

I have a lot of thoughts on an extended epilogue HAHA. i felt bad adding a secret sad smut chapter but not having the chance to do the opposite; i had one going but i spent like 4k on a luffy recruitment scene and decided… another time…

Zoro is smug about the whole ‘you only get to touch the stanley cup if you WIN!!!’ thing and uses it as an excuse to be the one to touch sanji in the pwp, since he never got the chance in the loop.

I also think luffy takes the stanley cup into the middle of the ocean, gives the one piece speech as usopp livestreams, and tosses it into the sea. Zoro and sanji have to save it (this is how it’s revealed sanji is somehow being traded to the pirates)

what happened with galchenyuk?

long story, but: he signed with the coyotes around 12 days ago on a one year contract, yesterday the team announced via twitter that they were placing him on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. this was really really surprising considering he just signed so people started to get concerned ab what happened. more under the cut so i don’t clog the dash

later that day, the arizona PD told the athletic that he had been arrested july 9th on charges of a private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest, and threatening or intimidating (those last three are slightly subjective due to the nature of the police as a system, but still important to mention). no one was hurt, and he’s ok as far as we know

i said it’s hard to hear because alex has had a history of substance abuse and mental health difficulty in the past, and this made me concerned about how he’s doing in general. also, people on twitter, as usual, have been less than kind about this entire situation, making jokes about his struggles with addiction etc.

i’m additionally disturbed by the reaction to this vs the reaction to the slew of horrific details about hockey canada/bhawks sa incidents. the league is taking this more seriously that literal rapists, which is frustrating but not surprising.

First period

Kahkonen today versus Coyotes a really good indication that Allen goes tomorrow against Vegas.

John Marino is still out. Travis Green says #njdevils  will go with the same lineup as Thursday.

Same lineup as last game, IHC Travis Green said - other than Kahkonen in goal.

Travis Green was asked about how DeSimone has back after playing the big minutes he did in DAL:

“He was well rested, he’s got young legs. I’m not worried about that. I don’t think guys worry

about playing too much. I know Dano didn’t!”

If Lazar isn’t able to get up, you know that had to have hurt beyond belief.

Lazar is an absolute beast pushing through pain. But this shot block, he’s keeled over.

And now he’s headed to the #NJDevils  locker room. Maybe just trying to walk it off too.

Tyson Nash (former player and current TV analyst) on the Arizona broadcast calls #NJDevils  IHC Travis Green “an unreal hockey mind and unreal human being.”

Little tweak to the #NJDevils  PP1 has Mercer on the top unit instead of Bratt.

That was a tough mistake by Nick DeSimone.

Silly little alchemist potions you can buy from peddlers that are based off the strange tonics and such you could find in the wild west. They're cheap and not very strong and depending on the brewer they might be a scam and not work.

Example: casts a Cone of cold with the elixir, and it's just called like Jedidiah's Heart burn be gone etc.

Dragon born from the east that are more like Chinese lungs vs. The traditional dragon archetype being European.

Sun down town that is actually a vampire town made for them to live in peace and not be discriminated against. They outsource blood from bigger cities, but for some reason the trains meant to deliver their source of food keep getting high jacked. The town slowly devolves into chaos as they go hungry and your adventuring team can figure out the mystery.

Recap of this podcast, but kinda not really as i only focus on matthew and josh's interview

Before we start, Josh had some ugly curtains in the background, that is literally not important but during the podcast i couldn't stop thinking about how ugly they are (i can rip on his curtains because i used to own the same ones they were terrible 😭)

To start they were ask how long they have known each other

JOSH: "...we've been played together since we were seven or eight years old now-- so not anymore but we did for eight years-- Growing up there wasn't really a time where we weren't on a line together... but a lot of memories just playing together and a lot of road trips together."

MATTHEW: "...it's been a long journey so far, so I'm happy to see Josh having so much success. And you know as kids I think we always, you know, competed against each other and that made us better. And like he said we played with each other for countless years so that's definitely helped and you know, it's pretty surreal that I got to play with him."

They were asked about the hockey academy. And it's was like a group project where Josh made Matthew speak because he didn't want to. But Matthew explains it originally started as a joke and the more they talked about it the more of a good idea it became. Then Matthew met with someone called Jacob Mars who runs a lot of hockey development in Minnesota, and Mars agreed to help, and from there it became easier to organize. And they both were excited for this camps as in arizona they didn't have the opportunity to be in a hockey program because there was none. But the main goal of the camp that they both talked about is to bring fun back to hockey.

JUNIOR COYOTES DAYS!! when this was being bought up they both became super smiley

to starts Josh LIED about them both not being competitive towards each other, they are professional athletes i'm not going to believe them when they say they weren't competitive

they would play mini sticks in the hallways of hotels, when they were travelling, until they got 100 noise complaints (matthews words not mine) then they would go somewhere else until they got another noise complaint

when they got older they started playing tag because their knees would hurt playing mini sticks

when traveling to places like detroit and chicago they would have snowball fights

there was one time they set off the fire alarm (on accident) playing tag. In Matthews words "a big disaster" and then Josh blamed it on matthew 😭

They played super smash bros together. And that got very competitive and Josh stands by his word that Matthew is TERRIBLE at it. And Matthew likes to say he was so much more better than josh. (they were asked what character they play with, Matthew said Bowser, Josh didn't answer)

But to add more about the super smash bros the coaches and Josh's dad would get involved and where convinced that they were better, so matthew and josh would team up together competing against their coaches and josh's dad.

They went to Bratislava (🇸🇰) together and josh kind of said it like they bought matthew along so he could translate everything (because matthew knies is slovak if you didn't know)

During this section Josh said something and I want to highlight it because it is important (and sweet):

"I think on the ice having Matthew is one of the reasons why the two of us were able to kind of make it this far."

Back to more stories: they never played on a 3 vs 3 team together and those would always get very competitive between the two

But to present time (aka when the podcast was filmed) they are now golfing together and that is also very competitive

However i encourage you, if you aren't planning on watching the podcast in your own time, to watch that section of it, it's just really fun and really sweet (timestamps: 8:01-11:00)

Talking about the NHL dream, and both of them very thankful that form a young age they had skilled coaches training them, just really wholesome stuff

They were then asked about Auston Matthews where Matthew called him a superstar and he also talked about skating with him when he was younger and how Kniesy would try and mimic his play after auston (the potential that storyline has PLEASE LEAFS FANS YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY HERE)

Then a question about Arizona hockey growing was asked... and man they were both happy to talk about it they were both so happy that it was growing, and they said they want to make an impact for Arizona hockey as well... don't even talk to me i thought i made peace with the coyotes relocation but it turns out i didn't and after hearing that, i'm fragile.

But to people wanting to understand the state of arizona hockey and why the coyotes was important please watch this bit of the video (timestamps: 16:17-18:07)

Doan Family Ranch- where crazy things happen apparently (tyson nash, buddy, please tell me what happens there). But for that summer (2022) they were going to train a little together before heading to their respective development camps.

Then the sun devils (josh's uni team) asked a question in the chat if matthew was ready to face the inferno. Matthew laughed and said that game is on thanksgiving and he's excited because he gets to spent time with his family on thanksgiving and that it's going to be a competitive game. But there of course was chirps and trash talk at the end:

JOSH: "...we gotta get some Matthew Knies poster boards in the student section for that game and just abuse him. Every chance we get. I'm gonna get all the baby pictures [of you] and you're gonna be plastered everywhere..." MATTHEW: "Yeah, for sure, for sure. Love it" JOSH: "I'm going to make shirts. I'll pay for those shirts to be made."

　応援しているチームの一つが、アリゾナ・コヨーテズ（右下）。残念ながら、下位に甘んじてはいますが、時たま^^;大物食い・上位いじめをやってくれるので、それがたまりません。

　相手はNHLの若き大スター、コナー・マクデイビッドを擁するエドモントン・オイラーズ（左上）。この日は、第1ピリオドこそ、追いつ追われつの展開で「オイラーズ3-2コヨーテズ」で終了。

　「イケそう」と思ったのに、第2ピリオドは何故か「中休み」。第3ピリオドになって、急に覚醒して2点を入れましたが、最終的には「オイラーズ5-4コヨーテズ」の1点差負けで終了。

　現在、コヨーテズは新たなホーム・アリーナを建設中で、大学の敷地内にあるマレット・アリーナに仮住まい。5000人入るか入らないかくらいの小さなアリーナなので、相手チームも「これ基準を満たしてるの？」と疑問に思っていて、やりにくいアリーナの一つだそうです。

end of season opinionated rankings of nhl teams

so i'm now completely settled into being a fan, ofc there's still more to learn about all teams, but it's nearing the end of the season so i wanted to do this again for funsies and give explanations this time :3

colorado avalanche- my family team, overall i love them the most and i'm the most attached to them idk why necessarily

pittsburgh penguins- oh boy did this team grow on me, mostly because of my good friend @beagss , i've learned to love them very dearly but i also have no clue how it happened lol

carolina hurricanes- this team is just fun and generally good, i'd be okay if they didn't make it too far unlike with the pens or the avs but it's still great seeing them succeed cos i really like the team and j think they're super underrated

seattle kraken- my family's secondary team+ they have burky so i can't not like them, and their vibe is immaculate too. i also have grown to like many of their players such as matty or geekie or mccann

minnesota wild- i like their players and they have flower, which is nice to see him on a team i generally like. i don't like them when it comes to being division rivals with the avs, but out of all teams in our division i like them the most and can tolerate them cos they're cool

calgary flames- they have good vibes honestly, idk about most the players but they have naz now so i have a soft spot for them. they're chill with me i guess :)

edmonton oilers- this one's weird because they're a team i'd say i love to hate when it comes to playing them, but i also want them to succeed?? like, i like their players and mcdavid and drai deserve a cup at this point tbh. they seem alright, very middle of the road as far as how i feel about them because it tends to shift day to day for me.

vancouver canucks- some people i follow like them a lot and they seem pretty cool, i want them to do well. i also like their players and overall i feel like they deserve to be treated better lol, they really got to me after the horvat trade and the bruce situation.

new jersey devils- i love so many players on this team ngl. it's nice to see them doing well this season given their less than great past. also my good mutual @toothlessdudebros is a big fan, so how could i possibly hate them?

buffalo sabres- another team i just want to do well, especially with the players they have. another huge reason? josty. that's it. just jost lol. (miss you king)

toronto maple leafs- oh you guessed it. i want them to make it past the first round, i feel bad at this point. they have a great group of guys that i've come to like quite a lot. as much as i like to poke fun at leafs fans, it does have to suck and i know the feeling

ottawa senators- they have a bright future i think, i like brady tkachuk and a few other guys there so i'm rooting for them a bit.

tampa bay lightning- another team i love to hate. i like their players, but playing against them is the worsttttt and it makes me wish florida would sink into the ocean forever lmao. you have to respect the back to back runs thiugh, definitely what i've looked to as a hopeful avs fan. there's some things that really annoy me about them, but i'm more lenient to say i'm okay with them than not.

arizona coyotes- idk about y'all tbh, i am aware of your existence but like are you really there??? if ykwim. i had some guys i liked there but they all got traded lol. most mid team ever, also what on earth is that arena???

washington capitals- you guys have some players i like, especially in kuemper (miss you) so you're alright. idk about ovi, also the old pens vs caps rivalry has made me less than lenient to be alright with y'all' lol. still have a legend there tho, so i gotta respect it a little bit.

new york islanders- bad cos of the rivalry(?) with the pens, but i like barzal and now beau is there so it's alright. some people i follow like them, so they're just okay

florida panthers- matthew tkachuk. that's the reason i like you. and i guess barkov is ok too. but honestly who *really* likes florida anyway? bring my boy ratthew back to calgary. please.

winnipeg jets- morrissey is cool? also jesse from bardown likes you guys and he's cool so you're alright with me. other than that? not much to say lol

anaheim ducks- should have kept the purple and teal jerseys smh. bring them back. do it. i dare you. other than that there isn't much to say since they've just been bad lol. i like zegras tho :))

columbus blue jackets- who the hell places an nhl team in ohio? i always forget you exist i'm not gonna lie. i'd be okay if you guys got bedard i guess???

san jose sharks- why are there three californian teams, it's worse than florida lmao ':] karlsson is your only redeeming factor.

chicago blackhawks- i... don't like y'all? idk the vibe just isn't right. being bad also just doesn't help the situation of me not liking you, sorry blackhawks fans. the avs have the superior toews anyway.

detroit red wings- old avs rivalry instinct says not to like y'all. larkin is the one redeeming thing, but being located in detroit might as well cancel it out

montreal canadiens- i know lots of people sympathize with you but.. idk i can't. i like lots of the players but, the vibe is so meh that i can't really bring myself to care :/

la kings- again, why three californian teams??? doughty and fiala are alright, but in the end i think i'm still salty over some avs and pens and canes losses lol

dallas stars- weird. goofy. but in a bad way? idk how to feel about you guys... but i don't get the best vibes, also the avs and stars are division rivals and that doesn't help it at all lol
