Achyuta Samanta Honoured with First PIO Excellence Award

With the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas kicking off tomorrow here,  the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) has honoured the Founder of KIIT and KISS Dr. Achyuta Samanta with the first-ever PIO Excellence Award in recognition of his unparalleled contributions to education and tribal empowerment. The award was given away during the ‘PIOs Dialogue with India 2025’ session, organized by KIIT-DU.

Themed “Empowering Global Connections: The Role of PIOs in Emerging India,” the programme brought together dignitaries and leaders from around the world.

Alongside Dr. Samanta, Shanmugan Mookkan, OSD to the Prime Minister of Malaysia, and Professor Ajay Kumar Dubey from JNU were also recognized for their contributions.

A major highlight of the event was the proposal to host an International Cultural Festival for the Indian Diaspora every four years in India. The festival aims to celebrate the rich heritage and contributions of People of Indian Origin (PIO) globally and strengthen their ties with India.

The session also marked the launch of the GOPIO International Chair at KIIT-DU, an initiative dedicated to promoting research and innovation concerning the Indian Diaspora. This chair will facilitate academic studies and document the contributions of PIOs across the globe.

Dr. Samanta, in his speech, expressed his gratitude, saying, “It is an honour for KIIT and KISS to host one of the sessions of PIOs. KIIT has grown from 12 students to over 80,000 today, and KISS has become a revolution in the country. I hope our distinguished guests are pleased to witness this progress.”

Ravendiran Arjunan, Secretary General of GOPIO International, praised KIIT’s remarkable growth: “The KIIT township has grown by leaps and bounds. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas itself was born out of a request by PIOs to Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and today, the contributions of PIOs in nation-building must be preserved and documented.”

Reflecting on the historical significance of Odisha, Arjunan remarked, “Kalinga was known for its traders and businessmen who travelled across the world. Their contributions are often forgotten, and it is time we preserve their legacy.”

Dr. Ponnusamy Muthayah, President of GOPIO International, traced the origins of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, highlighting how the conference has brought the Diaspora closer to India.

Vinay Dussoye, Vice President of GOPIO, emphasized the importance of protecting Indian culture and civilization, proposing the International Cultural Festival as a step towards reinforcing global connections. “The process of engaging the Diaspora rests with our younger generation. We must establish ourselves in international business and ensure cultural preservation,” he added.

Former Diplomat and Director General of international Relations, KIIT-DU Debraj Pradhan highlighted the Indian Diaspora’s seller role in India’s growth, while  Prof. Saranjit Singh, Vice Chancellor of KIIT-DU, underscored the role of the diaspora in India’s growth. Prof. Debasish Bandopadhyay, Pro Vice-Chancellor, extended the vote of thanks, acknowledging the proposal for the cultural carnival.

I must have missed the part in Project 2025 where it says Trump will appoint a council of only trans people to make laws and rules for trans people. I didn’t realize he’d be so friendly to trans people! Literally nothing he’s said so far has backed that up, but dream big, pop diva.

For Estonia, Glory Is Only A Song Away

August 20th, 2016: Estonia celebrated its 25th year of independence - the longest period as a sovereign state in its nation's history. The moment was important for the country, who have, since that day 25 years ago, sought to democratize, diversify their economy, and build relations with their neighbors, all within the context of their independent, unique identity. In the initial years shortly after gaining independence, Estonia chose to work closely with neither the United States nor Russia; instead, they looked towards their Nordic neighbors Sweden and Finland, as well as fellow Baltic states Latvia and Lithuania, prioritizing these relationships at first, and then considering broader relations (Russia and Germany have since become important trading partners). The results are markedly impressive: an advanced technological infrastructure, where citizens can file their taxes and even vote online, free education, and universal healthcare.

Perhaps even more impressive is the low public debt the country has incurred in the process, focusing on tight fiscal policy. Despite being a small country, Estonia's commitment to responsible economic and environmental policy, combined with its promise to protect the rights of their people while extending their quality of life, is genuinely impressive: Estonia's GDP is on track to match its Nordic neighbors by 2025. This continuing track record did not come easy for Estonia — following the global financial crisis of the late 2000s, Estonia suffered 2 years of negative GDP growth. However, they recovered from the recession in 2010, maintaining GDP growth comparable to before the economic crisis. Barring a brief dip in 2013, the trend of positive GDP growth has not ceased since.

In general, Estonia has striven to position themselves as a major player in the European theater not only socioeconomically, but culturally as well. Since 1994, Estonia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest, an annual contest where (mostly) European countries compete in a grand spectacle of music and performance. Estonia's success since their debut has been mixed; however, they have won the contest once, back in 2001. Estonia's win in 2001 was unexpected, bringing with it several firsts: the first Post-Soviet nation to win the contest. The first Baltic nation to win the contest. The first - and as of 2017, only - black person to win the contest. Concerns about their ability to finance and host the contest were quelled when Tallinn, the nation's capital, successfully hosted the contest the next year.

Since 2009, Estonian television broadcaster ERR has hosted Eesti Laul (Estonian Song in Estonian), an annual song contest to decide their Eurovision entry. Modeled after the long-running and popular Swedish song contest Melodifestivalen, Eesti Laul provides twenty hopeful musical acts the opportunity to represent their country. The popularity of the contest has found itself growing year by year, with the 2016 contest pulling in the highest viewership to date (it's interesting to note, however, that ERR, the broadcaster who hosts Eesti Laul, declined to release exact viewership data). It's also a surprisingly apolitical contest, at least on Eurovision standards: in a country where the major parties are all centrist, rarely veering too far left or right, it makes sense that politics play only a nominal role in Eesti Laul, and are usually done in a broad and vague Eurocentric context.

Estonia is hungry for a victory this year: following much hype around their 2015 entry 'Goodbye to Yesterday', an acoustic number by Stig Rasta and Elina Born that earned them an impressive 7th place finish, 2016 proved to be disappointing, as their entry 'Play', performed by young crooner Juri Pootsman, failed to impress the European public, placing last in its placement pool. The result has continued an up-and-down tradition for Estonia this decade, whose overall performance since 2010 has been seen by and large as, to put this delicately, unpredictable.

Tomorrow, the ninth Eesti Laul final will take place. Currently, multi-genre singer Kerli is tipped as the favorite to win with her song 'Spirit Animal'. A product of her commitment to reconnecting to nature through audio-visual spectacle, the song has many elements that have proven successful in the past for Eurovision entries: ethnopop with electronic elements, an all-white visual aesthetic, and clean electronic background visuals - the results both comparable and contrasting Danish Emmelie de Forrest's winning song 'Only Teardrops' from the Eurovision Song Contest 2013. Kerli also has the opportunity to buck the trend of mixed results for Estonia. She comes into the contest with name recognition across Europe, two singles that topped the US Billboard Dance charts, and a forthcoming album that culminates her transition from dark goth to dance diva to naturalist.

This year's Eesti Laul contest is also contextualized at a time where a push for tourism in Estonia is starting to grow: not only did Estonia confirm their participation in Eurovision 2017 mere hours after the end of the 2016 contest, but they sold tickets to Eesti Laul 2017 well in advance of the contest in an oblique attempt to drum up tourism. This goes in conjunction with their 'Visit Estonia' Snapchat account, which allows a variety of Estonian citizens to take over the account for 24 hours and share a glimpse into their everyday lives and the landscapes, cities, cultures, and lifestyles of Estonia.

Estonia is approaching the Eesti Laul finals with the opportunity to prove a lot. A victory for Estonia will make a bold statement and testimony to their ideals and aspirations. In a year of national selection contests mired with controversy, and fans restless for content beyond ballads sung by 20-something women, Eesti Laul is, as it has in all prior years, celebrating the diversity of genres present among Estonian artists. But in the backdrop of what has happened in Estonia and Europe at large, that diversity seems to shine and stand out more than ever. Perhaps more importantly, a victory in Kiev will act as another point of proof of the progress they've achieved since their independence, to show an increasingly polarized Europe the importance of unity, diversity, understanding, mutual respect, and song - the very reasons for which the Eurovision Song Contest was at first conceived.
