by just a hair, Voodoo Doughnut has won the Hidden Gem award, quite contentiously too! (the curator of this blog may change how this system works for future reference!)

In 2003, Voodoo's flagship location opened in Portland, Oregon, in the Old Town neighborhood. The company prides itself in its "imaginative and distinct doughnut flavors and products" (1), and has appeared in various television shows and print publications, and seeks to achieve world fame.

However, the reality of Voodoo Doughnuts is rather grim, specifically the conditions for its employees: illegal firings, dangerous hazards and lack of safety for staff members as well as customers, aggressive and hostile union-busting, general mistreatment of employees, and a long history of overall poor worker-company relations are the most immediate and glaring highlights of Voodoo Doughnut's legacy. In 2022, after years of thwarted attempts, Doughnut Workers United finally managed to vote yes on unionization (although the curator of this blog could not find many more details on the situation, such as whether it was truly implemented and respected).

While it is sure that there are those who truly love and reccomend the food from this establishment and sing its praises, many commenters and others who have tried the doughnuts before report that the doughnuts are overwhelmingly "just ok", and not as special as the hype would lead one to believe. Many also take issue with its offensively appropriative features. However, they are open late and their doughnuts, while not universally beloved, are not inedible either.
