I just realized that the Curious Cat probably didn’t intend for Alyx to die. The first time they fully appear, it’s to tell the Red Prince that humans are fragile things who won’t come back if killed, they panic when Ruby supposedly dies and are surprised to see her in the Tree, and they describe what they did to Alyx as “what anyone would do to a broken, useless thing: which, in the Ever After, means sending them back to the Tree for repair. It’s not like Curious had ever seen a human die before, permanent death was something the Jabberwalker invented. So when they lashed out at Alyx, they were probably doing it with the casual violence that Afterans can show to each other because the Tree won’t let them truly die, and just sat around waiting for her to Ascend and come back fixed and better.

And then they waited, and waited, and waited, and she didn’t come back. And Curious realized that their last possible tie to Remnant was permanently gone.

Oh shit I just noticed Summer left her pin on the book... She knew she wasn’t coming back. Her promise wasn’t broken: it was empty the entire time.

In case anyone was still under the impression that the gods are actually supposed to be good guys in RWBY and not, you know, responsible for basically everything bad happening in the show and represent the single greatest existential threat to our heroines and everything they know and love.

can't help but think about the consequences of this ep for Yang and Ruby's relationship. how Ruby literally looked the woman who raised her in the eye and killed herself. how Yang had to physically be held up by Blake or she would have collapsed.

Okay, so the sheer SYMBOLISM of Ruby/WBY vs. the Curious Cat.

First Ruby awakens with an utterly MASSIVE blast of silver light, the power we KNOW came from the Gods.

Then Ruby, who holds power from the Gods, battles the Curious Cat, first creation of the Gods.

Then finally, all four of Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang battle the Cat and DEFEAT them.

Ruby Rose, holder of power of the Gods, and her team, do battle with the first creation of the gods and defeat them.

Combined with what we see later in the vision provided by the Blacksmith, I think this is SUPER setting up Team RWBY vs. The Gods.
