I noticed you say you collect figures and plush but I rarely see you post pictures. Can you show pics of your personal favorites in your collection 😳

Ahhhhh sure!! I only have some of my plushes on display because I have so many and not enough room to show them all and my figures are kind of scattered and I don't want to take the time to move them all into one place and move them back to their spots, so I'll post separate pictures for those. My room’s lightning isn’t great and it’s too late for me to bother getting a stool for better angles, but here are some really quick photos of some of my junk.

Plushies! These are just some that I’m fond of, the oldest one here is the Squirtle in the back that I’ve had since childhood and the big Kirby dates back to the release of Squeak Squad. There are too many from when I was younger to have really displayed them up here but I still keep them around. I really love the Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah Beanie Babies and the Healslime.

Cloud and Kiso Kai Ni! Cloud came with the version of FFVII Remake I bought and Kiso was hell to get.

Sophitia, Shaman King, and Idolm@ster figs (and Voltron, I was a big fan of the original show as a kid... I don’t really want to have to defend myself for owning this but people can get really obnoxious about anything relating to the reboot). Shaman King was one of my earliest manga, so these figs are special to me. Riamu, Chihaya, and Takumi are my favorite Im@s girls so I had to get them.

Fate figs (and beanstolfo)! Santa Alter’s bag has its own stand.

JoJo! Giorno is probably my least favorite protagonist in the series, but I found him for cheap so I decided to grab him anyway. I really love the Jonathan one poking out from behind Jotaro.

These are some Nendos! I’m actually missing the Kirby from Kirby’s Adventure, but I think they look good as a trio! All the way in the back is Oono from Hi-Score Girl which was normally $80 to get online since Good Smile stopped manufacturing her, but when I visited Japan I managed to find her unopened for ¥4,000!

And the Steins;Gate shrine featuring a Kurisu fig, Kurisu Nendo, metal Upa, and forest fairy Upa! I was really into Steins;Gate in high school.

I also have a bunch of Amiibo and Transformers, but those are really toys so I didn’t include them.

i swear to god i saw vld nendoroids at one of the anime shops at the mall some years ago but looking it up and seeing that we don’t actually have any nendos for vld, i think i was shopping in an alternate dimension for a short while. we only have funkos here. horrific thanks i hate it let me out. actually let me back in so i can buy keith nendo 

admittedly i didn’t get out much at the time but i never even heard of like. actual physical vld merch at toy stores or anything. like i think there were comics? and that was it? and like maybe a few play sets aimed at younger kids but??? i would go to t*rget occasionally and see nothing for it, even when it was still airing in the early seasons???

and all of the robot kits i see online for voltron are for the original voltron series lol 

shows that had fandom cultural impact but no marketing done for toys apparently, despite having many opportunities for toys or merch beyond t-shirts and funkos

September Shopping

I know it’s October already, but post was a lazy a** and I did not get the majority of my packages until just lately... Anyway, I big haul again, and yes, still most of them YOI. I don’t think I will ever get over this obsession...

I finally got 22 djs from the Summer Comiket - I love all of them, no regrets there. Still more YuuVics than VicYuus but the ratio is more balanced this time. 2 Otayuris came as well from my fav artists. I got a few more HQ!! ones, 2 Taibanis and Nekota’s latest Hidoku dj.

As for the English editions - I was waaaay behind with Sekaiichi, so I got the last 3 volumes together, the second volume of Spiritual Police, the 5th Ten Count and bought the first volume of Finder for the effing third time from the third publisher... I got the Voltron character book but unfortunately it had printing error, so I just requested a replacement copy.

Goodies time! Victor is also here! ♥ He immediately got his Makkachin nendo pouch. The Chun Chun Collection nest is also here - waiting for the Podium Family birbies. Got the suits extra nendo set - just to be able to play with the nendos. And last but not least - more mobile charms! Both sets are super adorable - I will post them separately later.

Comic heroes of all sort literally leap off the pages and onto our desks this week, along with more unprecedented high-end robot releases. We’ve also got a look an adorably deformed drivable, and precious Pokémon gewgaws. Then it’s back to my own acquisitions as I fuss with a new Marvel Legend! Welcome back for Tuesday Night Toys!

New Stuff: Merc-y Magic

Seems like I’ve looked at more Deadpool toys since I started this column. Granted, I’m not nearly as off on the metatextual mercenary as I once was, but it’s still odd that he keeps comin’ back around. Maybe it’s just because his toys have a knack for being cool. This latest one, a ‘Breaking the Fourth Wall’ statue by Good Smile, is a pretty spectacular-looking effort. It’s not all characters that can run a look like this, and it’s taken some talent to bring it into plastic, leaving me suitably impressed. More creative superhero stuff like this from you down the line, GSC?

Tamashii Nations was last weekend, and along with a bevy of new Figuarts from now-standby series Kamen Rider, Marvel, and WWE, there were also some new Dragonball reveals! And I do mean just ‘Dragonball’, the big new one being the kid version of Goku from the earliest stories of Akira Toriyama’s eternal epic. He looks like a sharp little figure, a great choice for those who still stand by the original as the best entry in the Dragonball saga, and hey, it even looks like he might come with a little Korin accessory!

Others were a smattering of tweaked versions of previous characters and figures, including Saiyan Saga versions of Tien and Yamcha, plus Gotenks, Majin Vegeta, and SS3 Goku. It’s a nice covering of story arcs in figural form, ensuring whatever iteration of Dragonball you’re most attached to, you’ll have something to be enticed by. Even if it’s just to crumple up Yamcha into his legendary death pose.

Also on display at Tamashii Nations was pretty big surprise for Soul of Chogokin: Gipsy Danger from that big robot movie everyone likes! SoC’s been a wild ride lately, putting out more western-friendly properties like GoLion/Voltron and Zyuranger/Power Rangers, and a release like this cements the idea that they’re reaching beyond their own shores for appeal. I’m pretty ambivalent towards Pacific Rim, but dang if this doesn’t make me curious about what they’ll do next.

Wishlist: Robattle

Good Smile’s combining two things I’m forever amused by: Nendoroids, and Mechatro WeGo. The perfectly marketable mecha will be getting a super-deformed version entered into GSC’s Nendo line, and if you thought it was cute before, it’s been squashed to those classic proportions pretty effectively here. It is pilotable too, though for reasons of cost and space, they’ve elected to make the mecha itself more standard Nendo size and design it to be crewed by Nendoroid Petits. So if you plan on getting this and want some cute Vocaloid or Type-Moon character to drive it, maybe think about getting a couple of those.

Collectible company Gray Parka Service has an amusing aside coming out: Pokémon themed snow globes! Mashing up a decent selection of Gen 1 starters and Eeveelutions, one or two of these things might make a nice decoration if any of them strike your fancy. They’re certainly a unique novelty and-Jesus Christ Charmander get out of the snow it could put your tail out you’ll die!!

On that same subject, RE-MENT just released these Pokémon crossing candy toy figures, and they’re just the cutest things. Now these would be fun desk-top companions, or adorable additions to a themed display of a particular Pocket Monster. I know I wouldn’t mind that Gengar.

On Desk: Holla Holla

Marvel Legends are kind of a hit-or-miss indulgence for me these days, as my comic reading has slowed down and my space dedicated to toys has had to be used more judiciously. The latest Spider-Man themed wave had some really cool stuff, but as much as I’d love that new 2099 costume or the goddamned Jackal, I couldn’t pull the trigger on them. But Ms. Marvel? Ms. Marvel I am down with.

At this point you’ve either read some of Kamala Khan’s comics and know what a breath of fresh air her delightful superhero antics are or you haven’t and you wonder why your life is a never-ending torrent of sadness. Point is, Kamala’s fun and she’s deserved an action figure for some time now. The Marvel Legend delivers on it in that reliable way we’ve come to expect from the line.

I really appreciate Ms. Marvel’s use of soft plastic. It allowed her scarf (which looks great, by the way) to come out of the package with no problem, and the skirt-style fabric around her waist moves with her legs with no trouble at all! The head is a bit restricted around the neck with the way the hair is sculpted, but otherwise it’s all the posability you expect from a modern action figure (gotta love them ankle tilts).

They did include a couple cool accessories: swappable stretched out hands for her left and right, in a fist and an open hand, respectively. I’m super-grateful for these, you gotta love how Kamala gets actual distinctive super-powers and not just standard flying and super-strength, and these parts swap out easy and look good. I kinda wish they had wrist articulation, but as-is, they’re still exactly what I could have asked for.

If you’ve been made a fan of her comic and were chomping at the bit for some plastic representation of Ms. Marvel, this Legends figure will do the job very nicely. There is a surprisingly cute and non-pervy Bishoujo statue of Kamala coming from Kotobukiya later, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she got a Marvel Select at some point, but for now, go ahead and grab this one if you see it.

"Why haven’t we seen a Japanese dub of VLD?/When will we get nendos of VLD?”

For a series that started as an adaption of an anime (well, two anime series actually), a lot of people wonder why we haven’t seen any news for a Japanese release of VLD in any shape or form. And many speculate that that’s exactly it - Golion was originally a Japanese series that still has Japanese claims to its ownership.

Part of Golion and Dairugger’s rights were sold to WEP by Toei because the two series got average ratings compared to how Voltron was immensely popular in America. The partnership allowed WEP to commission extra content from Toei to create more episodes and an hour long special and after that the franchise met the end of its run in the 80s.

Except until WEP made Third Dimension (the scary voltron) in 1998 without Toei’s involvement. A legal dispute between the two ended in 2000 with new agreements and compensation where WEP was given ownership over the franchise and continue on with expanding the toyline and animated series.

(However, Golion and the rest of the team’s last official appearance in Japan was in 2007 in its debut in Super Robot Wars W)

Fast forward to 2008, when they wanted to produce a Voltron movie, a film company that was going to be on board backed out after realizing that Golion’s original character designer, Kazuo Nakamura, may still have some rights to Golion and thus Voltron. Toei also contacted WEP because of their lack of involvement due to animation and cinema being treated as different areas with the latter not being negotiated in their claims agreement.

There hasn’t been a lot of development on the movie for years. Ten years after that, two animated series were produced: Voltron Force and Legendary Defender. Alongside with that were a number of collectibles, and a toyline for VLD.

(Voltron Force never got toys because a deal with Mattel to produce them never went through)

Now, a lot of Voltron toy collectors have a disdain for WEP’s partnership with strictly American toy companies creating collectibles that were... not as much as they wanted it to be. MMW lost its license right after it made its Dairugger diecast collectible. Many people wanted Bandai to get the license since they were the company that originally created the Golion toy and had prototypes for Golion to enter their Soul of Chogokin line.

It went to Mattel btw. A lot of collectors didn’t like the stuff they made. Then it went back to Toynami. Collectors still hate Toynami.

And that’s that. That’s the history on Voltron becoming an American IP and going through legal disputes between the two owners. While we don’t have an actual answer, this is what many believe is why we haven’t seen any news about VLD in Japan whereas it recently got a Philippines and South Korean release.

So does that mean that’s the end of seeing Voltron in Japan? For one thing, we’ve seen WEP branch out of its comfort zone with America-only companies and finally gave the license to Bandai for the SOC Golion. But that’s just for the toy and not animation-wise where it treads into Toei and Nakamura’s territory. What about the animated series and Toei?

Well, Dreamworks purchased Classic Media which licenses Voltron, and Universal bought Dreamworks Animation and inherited the Voltron movie. And progress proceeded with more script writing, so perhaps they’re in a better legal situation. Maybe they have been doing all the negotiations with Toei behind closed doors and will make things a surprise?

It’s really up in the air, but we have been getting our own strings of surprises and gifts since 2016. VLD is the entry that has the most change and divergence from the franchise compared to other iterations yet ironically it’s also the one that pays the most tribute to Golion, itself.

Kpop. Hands down, definitely kpop. In the past, I hated kpop, probably because my then-best friend was pushing it down my throat, gushing about all the pretty guys. Skip few years, my now-best friend got me into kpop. But she was simply showing me some stuff, without any pressure. And, guess what, maybe it’s the years, maybe industry changed, or maybe the first friend had totally different tastes than me, but I got so fucking hooked. For fucks sake. Usually I don’t get into any groups, I just like and listen random songs but Monsta X and Got7 are destroying me, I would let Taemin from SHINee step on me (or maybe I would step on him, there’s a lot of stuff with him going for me). I also like BTS and Infinite. And I have a lot of random biases from different groups. Usually all of them are younger than me and I’m legit surprised when one of the guys is my age or, gasp, older. 

Ah, yeah, also - I’m only into boy groups.

In ma case it’s very close to how Pidge makes the sounds. The subs show it like ba-chooo, but I would write it more like pa-choof. So it sounds slightly… softer.
