Day 1. Rec a fic that deserves way more hits/kudos/reviews than it has

I’m gonna start this challenge off right, by reccing the first story in what is far and away my absolute favourite fanfic series I have ever read for any fandom:

Another Word for Never, by Squirenonny

Shiro used to dream of Earth. That was before the Arena, before Haggar, before he joined the Galra army. At least he has an ally, a Galra officer named Keith. Together they plan to bring down Zarkon's empire from the inside.

Matt never thought he'd see his family again. Then he crash-lands on Earth and Pidge rescues him from Garrison custody. But his homecoming is short-lived. Now the Holt siblings, along with Lance and Hunk, must find the Voltron lions and free the universe from Galra control.

Or: Galra!Keith, double agent!Shiro, red paladin!Matt, black paladin!Allura, full series AU.

This series--which is still in-progress, updating weekly, and currently clocks more than a million words--is absolutely mindblowing. Nonny changed just a couple small things and ran with it to create a vastly complex, intricate world, with detailed worldbuilding, complex characters, interesting, loveable, and sometimes punchable OCs, and a plot with so many threads it makes my head spin just trying to imagine keeping it all straight. I know longfics aren’t for everyone, but seriously, please give this a chance. As far as I’m concerned it’s the fandom’s ultimate masterpiece.

How about a rec a fic for each Palladin? These fics are all gen!

For Keith I rec Angry Young Man by justheretobreakthings Summary: Keith knew he had a temper. He knew that it was a problem, and he knew the way it made people view him. Short-tempered, volatile, ready to explode at just the right provocation. A troublemaker always itching for a fight, scowl on his face, mad at the world. People saw this, and as much as he hated to admit it, they weren’t wrong. He just wished it wasn’t the only thing people ever saw.But he can’t fault them for it. After all, it’s easier to dismiss him as the hothead than it is to take a closer look.

Lovely character study of Keith, very emotional and well thought out. It’s really sad though, and makes me wanna hug Keith. 

For Shiro I rec The Littlest Fingers Hold the Tightest by Paladin-Pile (UserFromPluto) Summary: After the final battle with Zarkon, the Voltron team begins a desperate search for Shiro, but not even Slav’s ramblings on quantum realities could have prepared them for what they find.Shiro has been turned into a child--a bright-eyed, scarred little boy with one arm and no memories--and although they try their best to accommodate the change into their already-chaotic lives, no one quite anticipated just how challenging it would be.

There is a really beautiful scene in the fic which is just so pure and beautiful between Keith and kid!Shiro and man... you’ll know which I mean if you read it. Anyway kid!Shiro is heart-breakingly adorable and I want to hug him.

For Hunk I rec Pillar in the Dark by VelkynKarma Summary: Hunk always gets the worst missions. But when Keith starts acting strange on their recon mission to find more allies against the Galra Empire, he starts to think maybe this is the worst one of all.

This fic is a little scary, and poor Hunk really has to keep it together to get himself and Keith to safety. He does such a good job even though he’s scared! So I wanna hug him.

For Pidge I rec Break on Me by Windscryer Summary: Captured. Concussed. Crying. Pidge's had better days. But not better friends.

All the boys are wonderfully in character, and wonderfully protective, and poor Pidge is in pretty bad shape so I want to hug her. 

For Lance I rec A Lonely Mind by Bandity Summary Lance struggles with depression, choosing to hide his problems, he starts down a dangerous road alone.

Lance struggles a lot alone in this, and the poor guy just needs a hug.

i saw your post about voltron fic recs! thanks for that!!! do you have any recs for one piece fics?

DO I. 

Bear in mind, almost all of my recs are pre-timeskip (or very close to just after the timeskip happened) so if you’re looking for anything regarding new characters, new plots, new islands, etc, you’re probably out of luck. For the most part I dropped out of the One Piece fandom shortly after the timeskip (a little bit into the Punk Hazard arc) since the characters and the premise just didn’t feel the same to me anymore. I did recently check out some new fics since I had a bit of a nostalgia kick for One Piece but even then I only stuck with stuff that could easily be envisioned pre-timeskip. 

This also means a lot of these recs are on Fanfiction.net. I know, people hate fanfiction.net, but AO3 wasn’t really a thing when I was in the One Piece fandom. 

Naturally...all my recs are gen/platonic.

AUTHORS

We’ll start off with authors...writers who have multiple One Piece fics that are, for the most part, really good. I’ll like to their AO3 profile if they have one, their FF.net one if they don’t. 

Tonko ~ Good quality gen fics (and if you like ships, they do those too, can’t speak to if those are good or not). Back when I was in the fandom (2010-2012-ish), Tonko had one of the most recced fics around, ‘Til You Feel It All Around You, which is a top-quality de-age fic that will sucker punch you in the feels over and over. Other personal favorites of mine include It’s The Little Things (Usopp gets a moment to be awesome and protect one of the monster trio for a change) and Invasive Measures, which features some A+ Zoro whump. Highly recommend a stroll through this profile.

X-Parrot ~ Likewise, X-Parrot has some of the best fics out there from even before I actively joined the fandom. They write a great mix of gen and ships, so you will get something you are interested in one way or another. My personal favorite is Seven Deaths which is the first fic I ever read by this writer (and features some excellent Zoro and Sanji friendship), but you can’t go wrong with Tiger Hunt either (in which Zoro is mind controlled and set to attacking the rest of the crew).  Honestly, check the whole profile out, pretty much everything is gold. 

Callosum ~ One of my favorite writers back in the day. Callosum has a neat mix (again) of gen and ship, so you can probably find something to your taste, and they produced a lot of fic. My personal favorite is Thirty Sword Katas which was done for the opfanforall’s 30 prompts challenges (basically the group posted 30 prompts in a set, and writers claimed a character and wrote something for each prompt). Most of the time, writers wrote short little pieces for this project. This author wrote long, well thought out pieces, so this is a real treat if you like Zoro. Most of their other fics are great too.

ZeldaAddict42 ~ ZeldaAddict was another one of those writers back in the day who was constantly producing content for One Piece and a lot of it is great. My personal favorite is Sticky Situation which straight up feels like a stupid, kooky side plot that might happen in a filler episode in the anime: a glue Devil Fruit user accidentally sticks Zoro, Sanji, Nami and Chopper together and they have to escape while attached to each other. Sanji’s Spinner is also pretty entertaining. Give these fics a whirl.

dandy wonderous ~ If you’re a Sanji fan you can’t go wrong with checking out this writer, since pretty much everything they write is Sanji-centric in some way. Personal favorite is Room for Two, in which a Devil Fruit user with the power to remove souls accidentally sticks Zoro’s in Sanji’s body, which makes them mental roommates until they can get Zoro’s body back. They’ve got plenty of other good stuff too, though.

SPECIFIC FICS

Libitina ~ Good adventure fic involving a weird island with plant monsters. Just zany enough to feel like it fits One Piece World while still having some good heart-to-heart moments with all the characters. Also, Zoro whump. 

Game Time ~ Same author as above. Luffy is bored on the Thousand Sunny and orders his crew to play a game with him. They play Hide-and-go-Seek. The catch? No powers allowed. 

Sanji’s Most Incredible Birthday ~ It’s Sanji’s birthday and the crew gets him the best present ever, a better looking wanted poster. (I should probably add that this was written before the timeskip and his new look, so at the time the wanted poster he is upset about is the hand-drawn one he got after Enies Lobby). Heartwarming and also very, very funny.

Caring, Not Careless ~ Tooth-aching fluff about Zeff and a very young Sanji still learning how to be a cook.

It’s Not Like Last Time ~ Some rare hurt/comfort with Brook as the main character. The Straw Hats get sick and he’s terrified of it ending the same way it did with his last crew. 

It’s Hard Knowing Your Own Strength ~ Short, sweet, to the point, and hilarious. The monster trio is getting too strong too fast and it has unforeseen consequences. 

Zoro’s Directions ~ By the same author as above, this fic makes me bust a gut laughing every time I read it.

Taking Turns Washing Up ~ A cute little slice-of-life story about the whole crew taking turns doing dishes.

No Time To Crank The Sun ~ This is a newer one that’s actually still ongoing, and a rare story set after the timeskip, but I’m enjoying it surprisingly a lot. Zoro starts losing his memories bit by bit and seemingly at random, and the rest of the crew is struggling to figure out if somebody is causing this and how to help him before it’s too late. Not completed yet, but it’s been updating pretty regularly, so I’ve got faith in it.

OTHER

Not a fic exactly, but there was this great fancomic a while back by olafpriol here, which I 100% recommend checking out. It never finished, but the chapters that are up are incredible.  It does get a liiiittle heavy on the suggestive Sanji and Nami pairing (which is the artist’s favorite), but not enough to be unbearable (and considering it’s Sanji, it’s really not out of character for him to fawn over ladies anyway).

One-Shots

Sweet Quiznak - CheckeredCloth Read if your into hurt/comfort and humor, an odd mix but this fic does it awesomely. Summary: "You're really into him," Hunk mutters, and wow, Lance's face is on fire. Hunk is killing him. "Look, read into how you like, Freud, just make sure that if I die Keith knows I totally would've mowed his ass like grass. That way, I can laugh hysterically at his emotionally-constipated expression from the afterlife." Rated Teen & Up

Love Bug Stuff - WhatTheBodyGraspsNot @whatthebodygraspsnot I’m such trash for Love Bug fics, this one in particular is stellar. Summary: Keith is bitten by an alien love bug that makes him fall in love with the first person he sees. And just guess who the heck that first person is? Rated M

Never Saw You Coming - dimpleforyourthoughts @dimpleforyourthoughts Read if you love angst, slow burn, mutual pinning, and hurt/comfort aka read if you love being put through all the feels :) Summary: Three months in space on his own would have been fine. Three months in space with Lance McClain is a whole other fucking story. Rated M

nothing’s quite as sweet - dimpleforyourthoughts There is cute cats and cute klance, need I say more? Summary: Keith is a barista who hates his job. Lance works at the cat shelter across the street. Rated Teen & Up

Muy Lindo - flipfloppandas - I’m trash for shy adorable keith and this fic delivered. Summary: In which Lance must learn how to navigate through a relationship with a Keith who is surprisingly shy, but it’s okay because Lance honestly freaking loves it. Not Rated.

implosion (the lines we cross) - pidgeotto_gunderson Some well written hard core angst if your up for it. Summary: The adrenaline is pumping through his veins - this is what he needs, what they both need. To yell and scream and hurt each other before they can mend.Fix-it fic for s7e6, imagining if Lance and Keith fought things out while they were all lost in space and it led to Lance finally spilling about his insecurities. Rated Teen & Up

Crest of White, Bow Down - 2towels @2towels I totally went “awwww” while reading this fic, its so adorable, it will definitely make you smile. Summary: “I don’t know what I need to do to prove to you that I haven’t thought about leaving, but I haven’t.”Without hesitating, Lance lifted his good hand to rest on Keith’s cheek and stroked his thumb across it, silently appreciating his pouty features as he swallowed. “Tell me every day you love me more,” He finally demanded dramatically and breathlessly, flitting his gaze down to Keith’s shoulders instead of the intensity of his eyes, “maybe that would work.”“That wouldn’t even be a challenge.” Keith said quietly.--Five times Lance is swept off his feet, and one time he falls. Rated Teen & Up

Kodachrome - HoddieMaine @joinmeinthishell , Ninke_A @collector-of-hats Wow this is such a beautiful story, its really well written, read if you love pinning and fluff. Summary: Keith has been at a loss for a while now. His job is terrible, his passion for photography has waned, and his pseudo brother has moved to some little town and keeps insisting he visit.When Keith finally does go, he ends up on a little street full of quaint shops. He intends to simply spend time with Shiro but ends up in a record store across the street. With a very attractive man, who signs instead of speaks. Rated E

Thinking ‘Bout You - BleuSarcelle @bleusarcelle, Queerklancing   @queerklancing I got a cavity from the fluff in this fic :) Summary: That time Keith had a voice in his head singing and found out he had a quite unique soulmate link. Rated G

Rose-Colored Boy - melancholymango  @melancholymango Read if you enjoy angsty lance, langst, & to experience all the feels. Summary: “I missed you, you know.”“Yeah?” Lance sighed, warm and giddy, clearly not absorbing how serious the words truly were. “Yeah.” Keith said, more certainty in his voice now. He reached down, hesitantly threading his fingers through Lance’s and giving his hand a squeeze. Lance tensed next to him. “I still do.”“I mean, I’m right here.”“Are you? You still seem pretty far away.” Rated Teen & Up

Blue Christmas -  melancholymango  I loved how keith and lance were written in this fic, its just overall super well written. Summary: The team decides to celebrate the holiday season in space as nostalgia gets the better of them, but reflecting on the past hurts Lance more than it helps and Keith doesn't have any memories to reflect on. AKA the one where Keith and Lance hate the holidays together, only to realize that they were actually celebrating all along in their own Keith and Lance way. Rated G

Multi-chapter

Not That Bad - varelsen @lvtvr Yeah this fic gave me lot of feelings, their relationship builds beautifully. Summay: “Am I really going to have to explain this to you?”“No, I’m totally fine with you shutting up right about now.” Hunk cups his hands around his mouth. “You. Are crushing. On Keith.” Or, a college AU featuring coffee shops, silly rivalries, motorcycles, arcade games, friendships, and lots of warm, fluffy feelings that are both confusing and delightful all at the same time. Rated M

Entangled - Purpleneutrino (mackerelmademedoit) @purpleneutrino I found this fic super interesting to read, and literally could not put it down. Summary: When Keith found himself mentally linked to Lance of all people, he never thought that it would end in anything but irritation and misery on both sides. He certainly never imagined that it would be a useful asset in team Voltron's fight against the Galra Empire. Now if he can just keep his feelings in check, they might actually have a chance at defeating Zarkon. Needless to say, when he'd wished for a 'bonding moment' with Lance, this wasn't exactly what he'd had in mind. Rated M

Hearts Don’t Break Around Here - klancekorner @dimplesandcurlsss Yeah I stayed up till 4am reading this and it was glorious, I finished at 3am and just thought about it for another hour, so awesome! Summary: Lance and Keith have been best friends since first grade. Lance’s brain is always on overdrive and Keith’s blunt, realistic ass can never keep up. They both come to realize that sometimes you can learn a lot about loving yourself by loving someone else. Rated M

Something just like this - klancekorner A summer romance sundae with a friends to lovers cherry on top. Summary: Keith reluctantly becomes the counselor for the Red Cabin at Camp Voltron, a summer camp in the middle of buttfuck nowhere that his older brother Shiro has worked at for years. Already unhappy with the current position that he is in, Keith prepares himself for a boring, sweaty, miserable summer; and his frustration only grows when he meets the counselor for the Blue Cabin Rated M

You and I Collide - idratherhaveyou @itsthegameilike If you looked up cute in the dictionary, this modern apartment au would be the definition. Summary: Lance likes to sing in the shower. Keith lives in the apartment next door and the walls are not very thick. And you can bet when Lance wakes him up at 7:30 in the morning, Keith has something to say about it. Rated M

I’ve Got You - DragonofFernweh @dragonastral Keith comforting lance is my aesthetic, this fic is my aesthetic. Summary: Keith isn’t great at the whole comfort thing, he doesn’t have a way with words, nor does he have much experience in way of affection. Still, when Lance hurts, Keith wants to do something to help. Otherwise known as; five times Keith comforts Lance, and one time Lance comforts Keith. Rated G

it’s easier for you to let me go - welcometothehumanrace  Should be called 6 times I went AAJKSCNSKDCNSJ because of how fluffin’ cute keith and lance are. Summary: Keith did not think Lance's arms were anything to get excited about. Or his shoulders. Or any general part of him. Just everything about him was unexciting as a whole.Obviously. Or 5 times Lance put his arms around Keith and the one time Keith really wanted him to. Rated Teen & Up

The Message - shipstiel @shipstiel-writes Wow this wrong number fic is just glorious, I laughed, I went “awwwww”, I just had such a good time reading this. Summary: Keith is texted by accident by some idiot one day, and honestly he's not even sure why he responds. Or why he keeps responding. Yet somehow he finds himself drawn in, and okay, so maybe this fool is mildly entertaining after all. Who would've thought. Rated Teen & Up

Homesick at Space Camp - K0bot @k0tron So awesome...just a fucking great fic. Its got fake relationship/married, its got angst, its got ballroom dancing, its got so much fluff, do I need to say any more? Summary: Lance realizes he's been an asshole to Keith, and on a diplomatic mission to a key planet for the Voltron alliance he... overcompensates.

Fake It Till You Make It - nikkiRA @aravenlikeawritingdesk I’m a sucker for Fake/Pretend Relationship fics and this one is the fic that started that particular habit. Summary: “What Keith here means to say,” Lance says, and although his voice is steady, he is gripping Keith’s fingers so tightly it’s painful. “Is that we can’t mate with your people, although we, um, appreciate the offer, because, well. We already are. M-mated, I mean. With, you know. Each other.” Rated M

I hope you love these fics as much as I did, they are some of my fav fics of all time. It took me forever to finish this post because I sorta, kinda, maybe, totally re-read a lot of them while making it :) Shout out to fanfiction writers, thank you for putting so much of your time into these stories for free, your all amazing!

Voltron 30-Day Fic Rec Challenge - Day 25: Rec a fic that you would want one of the cast or crew members to read if they could

I picked: A Human Thing by TheClassiestHat

AO3 Summary: When Lance began to forcefully tug Keith from one end of the Unilu space mall to the other with the promise of a “surprise”, he had the best of intentions.

(In which Lance's plan to cheer Keith up goes awry, and Pidge gives the boys a vocabulary lesson.)

After posting that one season seven missing-scene fic with Keith and Acxa, I discovered that this was the only other fic on the entirety of AO3 tagged as Aromantic Keith, which is... really, really sad. But, at least this is an excellent fic for it.

In this fic, Lance attempts to set Keith up on a date, only to discover that Keith actually isn’t into girls - or guys, or anyone at all. Neither of them know why, and when it’s suggested that maybe it’s because Keith is Galra, Keith has a bit of a meltdown. Fortunately, Pidge is there to save the day, explain to Keith that there’s nothing wrong with him, and she and Keith become aro-ace buddies.

It’s all well-written and in-character and very sweet, and God, aro-ace!Keith needs so so so so much more love than it gets.

The reason I picked this fic for Day 25 is that I picked Bex Taylor-Klaus as the one of the cast who I would want to read this. She has said in panels and interviews before that she 1.) headcanons Pidge as asexual and 2.) loves the Pidge-Keith friendship and wants more of it. So I think this would be a fic she would really enjoy if she were able to read it, since it combines both those aspects beautifully.

Day 3: Rec a fic that made you cry (or at least get all watery-eyed)

So, I don’t..... get watery-eyed. Like, ever. But I’m currently reading Made of Stone, and let me tell you my guys, the angst is H E A V Y and I’m very tense because i juST WANT IT TO ALL BE OKAY, OKAY??? I’m not finished, so I can’t review it fully but this is plenty of Langst for even the most Langsty of Langsters.

Voltron 30-Day Fic Rec Challenge

Day 1:  Rec a fic that deserves way more hits/kudos/reviews than it has

Purpose - Part II by LadyLienDa

This fic is the first fanfiction I ever read. This fic is the reason why I’m on Ao3 writing fanfiction in the first place. @ladylienda Thank you so much for writing this fic!!!! <3 <3 This is one of my all-time favourites!

If you like post-episode: S2E8 The Blade of Marmora fics (as I do - why would such an important scene have to get left out?!?!?!) and love hurt/comfort fics (as I do), then definitely give this a read!! This has one of the best “I’m half-Galra” reveals (and avoidance of revealing), looking after those injuries Keith sustained in the Trials scenes and emotional discussions with Shiro.

Summary/Review

Full of deep empathy and awesome hurt/comfort, Purpose - Part II sees the original character Hope (Iverson’s daughter) trying to find her place in Team Voltron. She grew up with the Olkari and is now with the others on board the Castle of Lions, however she struggles too see what purpose she has for being there. 

When Keith returns from the Blade of Marmora base injured after the Trials, Hope is the only person available to help him (the others have an angry princess to deal with, an alliance to make and battle plans to work out). Hunk plays an integral part in encouraging Hope to believe in herself, and through being available for Keith, discovers a purpose for being on board the Castle of Lions.

Although it is written in first-person, it doesn’t take away from the read at all - the way Hope’s character is written places yourself in her shoes asking the question of ‘hey, it’d be cool to be able to hang out/be a part of the Voltron team, but...what purpose would I serve? What good could I bring to an already working team like that?’. Also, since it’s an OC’s perspective that’s written in first person, the canon Voltron characters who we like to read about most in third person POV are still written as such.

Day 30: Rec a fic that you haven’t rec’ed yet but want to share

This is the end of the rec challenge, so I’m going to break the rules one last time to share three different fics featuring Coran, all of which I liked very much, but didn’t fit any of the previous prompts. These short oneshots all have very different takes on Coran’s character that mesh together surprisingly well. The first fic shows him as a caretaker, looking after a very young Allura shortly after her mother’s death; the second shows snippets from his life on Altea, with a refreshingly unique take on his friendship with King Alfor that portrays them more as equals; the third shows Coran from an outside perspective as he and Romelle discuss Altean traditions.

Lance's first diplomatic mission had gone wrong. Very, very wrong. Instead of allies on planet Macka, he and Keith found only enemies who want to sacrifice them to their Goddess. The two Paladins are going to have to work together to survive the harsh desert, severe injury, relentless pursuit, with the added problem that in addition to losing copious amounts of blood, Lance is losing his senses one... by one... by one...

This fic is a RIDE. Very intense, both in terms of plot and emotions. You won’t be able to put it down, rushing to see what’s going to happen and how they’re going to get out of it, especially with the building dread of the situation they’re in. And there’s a lot of really excellent fight scenes, especially the last one.

It was strange enough for the paladins of Voltron to have found another human this far from home, locked in a Galra prison. But it was stranger still when this human insisted that he knew them, and even that he was the former red paladin of Voltron.

That couldn’t possibly be true, could it? After all, if this Keith was actually a part of the Voltron team, then why does nobody remember him?

This fic, man. This fucking fic. I have no idea what’s going on, everything that happens only raises more questions, and god, poor Keith needs so many hugs. I need to know what’s going to happen, what has happened in the story to get where we are now. If you like having your heart crushed, you’ll love this fic.

Here's the thing about hope - it's really easy to spread and tends to be one of the hardest things to kill. And a whisper of hope can do so many things; from making a good piece of art, to saving a life.

Hope can bring down an empire, if there's enough of it in the right places.

Right now though, Sam Holt isn't looking to bring down an empire. He just wants to live through this, with Matt by his side. But he has a whisper of hope, this 'Voltron' and maybe if he applies it in the right places...

Well they might not have enough to take down an empire but a prison colony seems within reach.

I love me some pre-reunion Holts being badasses, and this is an especially good one. And it has so many good OCs, all of them unique and with hints of detailed worldbuilding behind them. You can’t help hurting for the ones that don’t make it.

I especially love a certain bombshell involving Mama Holt and some others!

One week after news of the Kerberos disaster broke, Pidge receives a new Mark--proof that Matt is still alive. She breaks into the Garrison to find him, only to find herself caught up in the fight for the fate of the universe.

Keith keeps his arms covered so he doesn't have to watch Shiro's scars compounding on his skin--but doing so means cutting off contact with his romantic soulmate, who greets him each morning with a new (and terrible) pickup line.

Shiro and Matt thought they were the luckiest people alive when they found out they were going to Kerberos together. But Shiro hasn't seen Matt's untidy scrawl on his arm in almost a year, and he has no idea if his soulmate is even still alive.

Listen. Listen. I could go on about squirenonny’s works for YEARS. I had to physically stop myself from just going through their works and filling in as many days as possible just from that. And after the Duality series, I have to put Love And Other Questions at the top of my favourite fics of all time list. Soulmate AUs are a blessing, and this one takes the concept to a whole new level with multiple types of bonds, multiple bond partners, requited and unrequited bonds, bonds that grow and change, and even interfering with bonds. It is a beautiful, beautiful piece of work, and no other soulmate AU has ever measured up to it. And even more so because the focus of the story isn’t romance, but simply connections to the people you care about. That’s what saves the day, in the end. Please, please, please give this one a read, because WOW.

Everyone has a mask, one that tells the world what character you're destined to play in life, that tells people who you are. Except Lance's mask doesn't match him at all, and it's driving Keith nuts.

This whole concept is brilliant. I could scream about it for days. Some of the chapters just have the most chill-inducing visuals at times, and I could happily read hundreds of thousands of words in this AU.
