I drew this art almost a year ago, in the era of the “Hi, Barbie!” meme, but in Russian style 💃 This is Varya (Barbie = Barbara, the Russian variation of this name is Varvara), she is from Veliky Ustyug and is dressed in a wedding suit. You know, in the Vologda province people seemed to really love pink fabrics 🌺 👄

i just spent more than an hour doing this first-division world map quiz in jetpunk and these are my results:
i scored 609/3795 so 16%. i'm actually very embarrassed cause i had multiple brain farts and i couldn't remember some very very easy ones (don't worry i WILL talk about them). but first of all, the most embarrassing one of all. i missed la rioja 💀💀💀
i'll talk more about my cagadas (and not cagadas) after the read more cause it could get lengthy lol
first of all, I'M SO SORRY ALL OF LATAM 😭😭😭😭
let's start with mexico... when i tell you i wrote 'california del sur' like dozens of times and was genuinely shocked it wasn't counting it like correct like the quiz was bugged or something lol. i will never forget it's baja california and not del sur i promise. there's also so many of these i should've got: campeche, durango, cuanajuato, méxico, puebla, querétaro, quitana roo, san luis potosí, sinaloa, and veracruz AT LEAST.
for argentina, chubut gave me so much trouble... like i knew i knew it but my brain just wouldn't told me. and as you can see, i didn't got it 😔. also i hate that if i had guessed la rioja i would've gotten 2 points en fin.
i have no idea why the netherlands were like this... i was so ready to name the provinces i actually know quite a few of them
i know it's the easiest to get, but i got all belgium :)
also all pakistan :)
brazil 😔😔😔 i should've gotten bahia, espírito santo, goiás, and rio grande do norte & do sul...
i can't believe i missed new brunswick in all US + canada
so so sorry portugal :( i should've gotten bragança, évora, leiria, santarém, setúbal, viana do castelo and vila real
i'm not putting the china one cause it's too large but when i tell you i wrote like 20 times heilongjiang cause i knew it and where it was but did not. write it correctly. at any point.
i'm also not putting russia for obvious reasons but i had so many brain farts with it. i can't believe i missed chukotka, amur, irkutsk, ivanovo, magadan, murmansk, nizhny novgorod, novgorod, samara, smolensk, volgograd, vologda, voronezh, yaroslavl, adyghea, buryatia, ingushetia, karelia (this one gave me so much trouble yall), tuva, udmurtia, khabarovsk, and primorsky, all of them i perfectly knew :/
i knew all four of these but only kosrae came to mind rip me i guess
france gave me SO MUCH TROUBLE i kept coming back to those two last regions in mainland france and i could just not remember their names. the worst thing is at one point i wrote 'val de seine'... so close 😔
germany and italy humbled me so much. i thought i was gonna know every single division and i did horribly lol
i might've not gotten all of the divisions in my country correct but at least i got all greece (not counting mount athos) :)
I WROTE JIJU INSTEAD OF JEJU 😭😭😭😭 also for the life of me i could not remember train to busan
india is also a long one but it gave me sooo much trouble i couldn't remember ANY. en fin, i should've gotten AT LEAST arunachal pradesh, manipur, mizhoram, tripura and uttar pradesh.
i don't know what's worse, that i almost got all israel or that i forgot tel aviv 💀💀
en fin. that's all. maybe i'll try again some other time.
#i'm kinda proud i guess. despite everything#it could've been much better#but it also could've been so so much worse#also i can't believe i got all US states but not all spain's autonomous divisions en fin#something something US cultural hegemony nsq

[The dominant feature of the stinging nettle is obviously its ability to sting; hence it is often used for illnesses associated with colds such as fevers, coughs and rheumatism. For example, in Vologda province an infusion of the leaves of the common nettle (Urtica dioica) was used for a fever, and of the seeds as cough medicine, while rheumatic patients were beaten with fresh plants on their joints [Ivanitskii 1890: 153]. In Ukraine people who suffered rheumatic pain would take steam baths and use switches made of nettles, or drink the flower heads infused in vodka, while juvenile patients were beaten with the fresh stems [Gornitskii 1887:174]. The plant also had prophylactic functions: “Dig up some nettle roots, dry them, pound and sieve them, then rub them on your face, hands and feet, and they won’t be cold” [Zabylin 1996: 424, 430]. In Kazan’ province a nettle root decoction was drunk for fever [Krylov 1882: 32]. In Novgorod province nettle decoction was a medicine for a cough with catarrh (Toren 1996: 161).]

[ A well-known and often repeated way of treating rheumatic pains is to cover yourself with fresh, stinging nettle leaves. During my workshops intended for families with children, I have frequently witnessed a situation when parents kept children from crying, explaining to them that if they are burnt with nettles now it will prevent them from joint pain in the future.]

From “A Letter to the King of the Forest”
Our village informants distinguish between two types of witch or wizard. There are those who know some spells and are able, for example, to stop bleeding or to cure toothache. But there are also those who not only “know” magic tricks and texts, but who also know in the sense of “are familiar with”, i.e. deal with supernatural powers and it is to them the villagers will go in order to remove a jinx or to get a herdsman’s spell. Everybody knows that they can do both “good things” and “bad things”. Furthermore, rumour suggests that these wise-folk cannot help but inflict magical damage because of the devils who serve them. And the devils must be kept busy at all times, otherwise they may start tormenting their master. To keep the devils under control, such wise-folk send them “to count the needles on a fir-tree”, i.e. ask them to do meaningless work, so they won’t be a nuisance.
So, this witch who consorts with evil spirits does the following: she takes a piece of birch bark or paper and, standing beside the chimney of the stove, scribbles some- thing on it with charcoal, as if writing a letter (1). While doing this she pronounces the magic text asking the forest master, the forest king, to return the object that is being searched for.
Let me also explain the magical significance of the locus chosen for the ritual. The Russian stove (2) is often a place where rituals take place. It serves as a communication device between the human and the spirit worlds. For example, after a funeral people shout into the stove that the deceased is no longer in the house. Here too grandmothers washed babies, creeping into the oven and reading prayers over them. In the same locality, we recorded a story in which one wizard transferred his knowledge to another, also making use of the stove. The initiator stands in the house at the mouth of the stove and speaks “words” into the stove, while the one being initiated sits on the roof by the chimney and “gathers them in”.
When the bark letter is ready, it is handed over to the customer. The latter should go to a crossroad or to the place where the person or the animal was last seen, and throw it behind him, back-handed and with his left hand. According to other accounts, the customer can also do this by the gates which separate his yard from the street.3 This magic ritual has been recorded not only by us, and not only in the XXI century. On the map we can see that it has been recorded in numerous provinces of the European part of Russia. The oldest ethnographical references date to the second half of the 19th century.
“I take a piece of charcoal. I’ll scribble it down like this. I’ll put it here and I scribble it down: ‘I, servant of God, Anna, will get up without saying a blessing, will go out without crossing myself-not out by the door , not out through the door, not out by the gate, not out through the gate-out into the deep, dark forest. ‘King of the forest, King of the forest, release my little cow, release her and chase her away, send her home as quick as you can’. There are others (i. e. other wise-women) who can get people found ... So that’s what I write. Then you throw the paper and say ‘Come home as quick as you can’. So, that’s what you write. That’s all there is to it.”

Saints&Reading: Thur., Apr. 30, 2020
Holy Apostle James, BRother of St John the Theologien
The Holy Apostle James, the son of Zebedee, was the brother of Saint John the Theologian, and one of the Twelve Apostles. He and his brother, Saint John, were called to be Apostles by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who called them the “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17). It was this James, with John and Peter, who witnessed the Raising of the Daughter of Jairus, the Lord’s Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, and His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Saint James, after the Descent of the Holy Spirit, preached in Spain and in other lands, and then he returned to Jerusalem. He openly and boldly preached Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world, and he denounced the Pharisees and the Scribes with the words of Holy Scripture, reproaching them for their malice of heart and unbelief.
The Jews could not prevail against Saint James, and so they hired the sorcerer Hermogenes to dispute with the apostle and refute his arguments that Christ was the promised Messiah Who had come into the world. The sorcerer sent to the apostle his pupil Philip, who was converted to belief in Christ. Then Hermogenes himself became persuaded of the power of God, he burned his books of magic, accepted holy Baptism and became a true follower of Christ.
The Jews persuaded Herod Agrippa (40-44) to arrest the Apostle James and sentence him to death (Acts 12:1-2). Eusebius provides some of the details of the saint’s execution (CHURCH HISTORY II, 9). Saint James calmly heard the death sentence and continued to bear witness to Christ. One of the false witnesses, whose name was Josiah, was struck by the courage of Saint James. He came to believe in Jesus Christ as the Messiah. When they led the apostle forth to execution, Josiah fell at his feet, repenting of his sin and asking forgiveness. The apostle embraced him, gave him a kiss and said, “Peace and forgiveness to you.” Then Josiah confessed his faith in Christ before everyone, and he was beheaded with Saint James in the year 44 at Jerusalem.
Saint James was the first of the Apostles to die as a martyr.

St Ignatius Brianchaninov
St. Ignatius Brianchaninov was born Dimitri Alexandrovich Brianchaninov (Дмитрий Александрович Брянчанинов), on the February 15, 1807, in the province of Vologda, the son of an aristocratic landowner. Intellectually gifted, peaceful and reflective by character, from early childhood he was drawn to a life of prayer and stillness. However, his father planned a military career for Dimitri, and so, when Dimitri was 15 years of age, his father enrolled him in the Imperial School of Military Engineers in St. Petersburg. There Dimitri excelled, even attracting the attention of Grand Duke Nicholas Pavlovich, the future Tsar Nicholas I. Nonetheless, Dimtri felt called to the monastic life (uncommon for a Russian aristocrat at that time), and he became deeply depressed at the seemingly inevitable prospect of a career as a military officer.
In 1826, Dimitri fell gravely ill, but nonetheless graduated first among all candidates at the School of Engineers and received his commission. Immediately, Dimitri attempted to resign this commission, but his resignation was refused on orders of Tsar Nicholas. However, in 1827, Dimtri became critically ill once more, and this time his resignation was accepted by the imperial authorities.
During the next four years, Dimitri lived as a novice in various monasteries, without settling permanently in any of them, partly because of ill health, and partly because he failed to find a spiritual father in whom he could place unreserved trust. For the remainder of his life, St. Ignatius would lament the scarcity of true spirit-bearing elders in his day. Finally, in 1831, Dimitri was professed monk by the ruling hierarch of his home province, Bishop Stephen of Vologda, and he received the monastic name of "Ignatius." Shortly after that Monk Ignatius was ordained deacon, then priest. All this took place without the approval of his parents. In 1832, Hieromonk Ignatius was appointed superior of a small monastery in the Vologda diocese. However, the damp climate brought about ill-health which quickly forced his resignation.
Then, in autumn of 1833, the most unexpected thing happened. Tsar Nicholas, during a trip to the School of Military Engineers in St. Petersburg, enquired into what had become of the promising student Dimitri Alexandrovich. Upon learning of his monastic profession and hieratic ordination, the tsar ordered Hieromonk Ignatius to return to the imperial capital, where, aged 26, he was raised to the rank of Archimandrite and made igumen of the St. Sergius Monastery, one of the most important in St. Petersburg, and one which enjoyed great imperial patronage. Tsar Nicholas entrusted Archimandrite Ignatius with the task of transforming this monastery into a model community, where visitors to the Imperial Court could see monasticism as it should be.
Over the next 24 years, and amid what was often taxing circumstances, Archimandrite Ignatius fulfilled his duties as igumen of the St. Sergius Monastery, giving particular attention to the beauty of the Liturgy. During this time he was a prolific author, writing much of the material in the five volumes of his collected works.
Finally, however, in 1857, and exhausted by his responsibilities as igumen, Archimandrite Ignatius was elevated to the episcopacy, to serve as Bishop of the Caucasus and Black Sea—a vast, unorganized diocese, whose administrative burdens were particularly difficult for someone afflicted with Bp. Ignatius' ill-health.
Thus, it was no surprise when, after four years of episcopal service, Bp. Ignatius submitted his resignation in 1861. The resignation was accepted, and Bp. Ignatius was allowed to retire to spend the remaining six years of his life in seclusion at the Nicolo-Babaevsky Monastery of the Kostroma diocese, where he devoted his time to writing and a wide correspondence with spiritual children. He reposed in the Lord on April 30, 1867.
Bp. Ignatius was glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1988, and is commemorated on April 30...Source Orthodoxwiki
Acts 4:23-31 NKJV
Prayer for Boldness
23 And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who [a]by the mouth of Your servant David have said:
‘Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things? 26 The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the Lord and against His Christ.’
27 “For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. 29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”
31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Life and Judgment Are Through the Son
24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

Blue Crest
Wassily Kandinsky
1917
Happy birthday, Wassily Kandinsky, the father of non-objective art.
As a student, Kandinsky became interested in ethnography, trying to touch the origins of his native culture. In the summer of 1889 he undertook an expedition that had a huge impact on the worldview of a law student. With the guidance of the Society of Devotees of Natural Science, Anthropology, and Ethnography, he spent more than a month on an expedition to the Russian North, in the Vologda province. He wrote that what shocked him in the Northern villages was the diversity and brightness of indigenous clothing. The interiors of the village houses looked just as striking, as the artist recalled later, and when you entered the village hut you seemed to fall into a fairy tale.
Impressions from the North dozed at the bottom of his soul, while he continued his studies at the University.
As a graduate and post-graduate student of the law faculty of Moscow University, he stopped working on his thesis at the age of 30 and traveled to Munich to receive an art education.
Kandinsky sought to express his feelings through pictorial means with the help of color, line, and abstract form. The narrative did not interest him: "Color is a means of exerting direct influence on the soul. Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hands that play, touching one key or another purposively to cause vibrations in the Soul."
Created in 1917, Blue Crest presents a drama of shapes, colors, and images. The vortex-like flow of life, the burning of the picturesque "matter" is here an expression of spiritual tension and gloomy premonitions. Tragic notes can be heard in the interlacing ragged black lines that form the frame of the composition. A turbulent dark background looks like a sea storm. Strong waves absorbing and throwing the wreckage and the remains of life forms: boats, domes, bell towers, and churches. Their collision and concentration in the center of the picture, color expression, all these create a feeling of symphonic sound in all its fullness, strength, and power.
