I've hinted at this for a while, but here's a preview of the new skin shader I plan on releasing with version 2.0 of the Toolbox. This time around I was able to reference a decompiled version of the shader that Norbyte kindly shared, so this version has been made with a lot less guess work. I've also been able to implement freckles and vitiligo finally, so that's cool.

I don't usually post a lot of updates to working on this stuff because it's mostly a lot of me playing with nodes like lego pieces, and I'm unsure how many people find that interesting; but if people do wanna see that let me know, I'm always happy to send nodes lmao.

I had a stint of suicidality this year where I was both self harming a lot more and engaging in more intense scene. Your wife is 100% correct in that they served different purposes, cutting myself was a survival mechanism, getting cut (and the aftercare that came with) was an expression of love. Good scars and bad scars.

I did find that building separation between the two made it easier to keep the headspace different. We ensured that we never did scene in the room where I tended to self harm, we used different tools and often implemented extra elements that I enjoyed (like shibari). Really helped keep those two experiences as different.

for your cutting guide id be interested to see if you have any thoughts on how to deal with it mentally? coming from a self harm background but now sexual cutting is a kink those two can be really hard for me to deal with so like idk?

I had no idea how to answer this so here are thoughts by my wife @silly-babyy who did self harm a lot and also enjoys me cutting them as a sexual act

"Think of it like a venn diagram; one one side you have self harm and the other side you have cutting as part of sex. The only thing overlapping is that your flesh is getting cut. Every other part is different. The headspace is different, the circumstances are different, the cutting tool can be different. Where one is about depression the other is about pleasure "

So I guess my thoughts are try to build that wall between them, go slowly, communicate openly with the person cutting you, don't be scared to safeword if it gets too much. I probably won't address this in my primer because I'll be focusing on mechanics but I appreciate you reaching out.

Opening this up to the floor, if anyone else has experience with both and would like to add their thoughts they are very welcome

After a lot of hard work, I'm proud to finally release Volno's Texture Toolbox. What this is, is a collection of texture editing tools aimed at making modifying textures for use in Baldur’s Gate 3 both easier and more accessible. It also lets you see those edits in real time with the use of my recreation of Baldur’s Gate 3’s skin shader. I plan to continue working on the shaders and tools provided, mainly on adding in additional shaders (such as eyes and hair) and refining the existing skin shader.
