Driving A Premium Used VW Polo

Polo and Polo Vivo - Few cars are as synonymous with local success as Volkswagen seminal compact city car duo.

Since its launch, the Polo hatch has consistently been the second best-selling passenger car in South Africa with its sibling the Vivo being the local best-seller.

South Africans love the Polo almost as much as they enjoy a good braai; nearly 23 000 Polos were sold in 2017 alone.

In January 2018, Volkswagen launched its sixth-generation Polo locally. One of the benefits of having a group-wide platform (MQB AO) means technology and features will trickle down from more premium offerings, such as the Golf.

Some used VW Polo’s are longer, wider and, given a host of new tech, more premium than their predecessors. The 2018 Polo was the first to be equipped with digital instruments (borrowed from the Golf).

The range comprises five 1.0 TSI derivates (Trendline, Comfortline and Highline) in two engine outputs; 70kW/175Nm and 85kW/200Nm. Both engines can be mated to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG box.

The launch of the 2018 Polo was the culmination of an R 6.1-billion investment at VW’s factory in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape, where the new hatch will be assembled and sold both locally and internationally.

Given its new features, sportier design and legacy, will the new Polo become another best-seller locally?

Driving it

What’s it like behind the wheel? In short, the 2018 model is more premium than the outgoing Polo, handles well on the road, offers a comfortable ride and is surprisingly brisk despite its 1.0-litre engine capacity (the only engine currently available until the 2.0-litre GTI arrives).

The 70kW version offers sufficient power and the 1-0-litre petrol performs adequately when mated to the 5-speed manual. The 7-speed DSG, another benefit from its Golf sibling, is incredibly smooth, swopping cogs accurately and with great rev-matching speed.

The 85kW Highline, mated to a DSG, elevates the Polo to Golf territory offering a comfortable, frugal (4.7-litres/100km) hatchback.

In terms of handling, the Polo offers enough grip for spirited driving with negligible body roll though city driving remains its strong suit.

The engine, especially in 70kW guise, has a laid-back approach and is a perfect match for its comfort-tuned suspension. Steering is precise, light and overall its agile enough to make a breeze of entering and extricating itself from tight parking spots. Overall, the Polo has grown up and has resolved many of the issues affecting the outgoing model.

The Polo has all the ingredients for a best-seller in SA and given its price point and positioning could grab sales from the high-end Golf.

Design

Like the Golf, Touran, Tiguan, Passat and Arteon, the Polo uses the VW group's MQB platform and as a result, gains many of the design and structural elements of its siblings.

It's a lot more assertive in appearance than its predecessor though borrows heavily from the current Golf especially its head- and taillights. The roofline is longer and a fine line runs along its flanks.

Range and dimensions

Based on the VW group's MQB A0 platform, the Polo sports new dimensions; length has been increased 81mm to 4053mm and wheelbase lengthened by 94mm to 2548mm. The hatchback is also 69mm wider to 1751mm though its height has been reduced by 7mm to 1461mm.

In addition to the three standard trim lines, the special edition Polo beats (with features including a 300-watt sound system), R-Line package (with a sporty exterior featuring C-shaped front air curtains, side sills, boot spoiler, rear diffuser and 17" Bonneville alloy wheels) and the performance-focused halo model, the Polo GTI, (available in South Africa in the second quarter), provide added variety.

Inside

A new dashboard and cockpit layout make its way into Volkswagen compact models. New for this generation of Polo are digital dials, a new dashboard, angled centre console as well as revised dials and controls. More than any other feature, the digital dash gives the Polo an upmarket position few of its rivals can match.

It’s a lot more practical too for families – boot space has increased from 280 to 351 litres.

Driver Assistance systems

New features for the Polo include the lane change system, blind spot monitor with rear traffic alert, semi-automated park assist, proactive occupant protection system and a manoeuvre braking function. The hatchback has optional keyless start.

Beats:

The new edition of the successful Polo beats special model has a 300-watt sound system from legendary US audio specialist ‘beats' (by Dr. Dre) and a whole array of customised features on board. The newly-designed amplifier and subwoofer are housed at the bottom of the boot to the left-hand side of the spare wheel well, where a full-size spare wheel is housed.

R-Line:

The ‘R-Line' package makes the Polo even more dynamic with such features as 17-inch alloy wheels ('Bonneville'), a large, sporty front bumper and, at the rear, a diffuser with chrome trims and a roof spoiler. The Polo with R-Line package also has wrap-around black sill trim strips which visually press the car down to the road. The R-Line Package is only available in South Africa in the second quarter.

Convenience

The Polo can be further personalised and upgraded to satisfy individual budgets and tastes. New in the options programme are features such as high-intensity LED head- and tail light clusters and one of the largest panoramic sunroofs in its class (opening is 10mm wider and 20mm longer than before).

First Look: The Volkswagen Touareg R - Plug-in Hybrid

Volkswagen is set to add a range-topping new premium model to its flagship Touareg line – the Touareg R. The versatile model’s 340 kW (462 PS) plug-in hybrid drive offers an innovative blend of superlative performance and electric efficiency. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the new SUV always starts in the all-electric E-MODE for zero emissions. The battery capacity is designed so that the Touareg R can cover the average daily commute under electric power. Like all Touareg models, the new R version comes with permanent all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as standard. 4MOTION and the powerful drive system (700 Nm of torque) means the Touareg R has also been homologated for a maximum trailer weight of 3.5 tonnes. The premium model can cope with this maxi- mum trailer weight even in E-MODE. As the first plug-in hybrid SUV in the world, the Touareg can also be fitted with the trailer maneuvering system Trailer Assist. And yet another first: the Touareg will be available with Travel Assist for the first time. The premium model will be the first Volkswagen to boast assisted driving (automatic longitudinal and lateral guidance) up to a speed of 250 km/h.

First R model with plug-in hybrid. The new flagship model was designed by the Volkswagen R performance brand, which traditionally develops the sportiest models in the Volkswagen range. The Touareg R represents a paradigm shift – it is the first Volkswagen R model to feature a plug-in hybrid drive. It is also the first time a hybrid model has been the most highly-powered Volkswagen. The extremely well appointed Touareg R, which features the Black Style exterior design package along with 20-inch alloy wheels & R-Line interior trim (including Vienna leather), is set to enter the market in the second half of 2020.

Intelligent electric performance. The Touareg R is the third plug-in hybrid model in Volkswagen’s European product line, following in the wheel-tracks of the Golf and Passat. The Touareg R is the first all-wheel drive model in Volkswagen’s PHEV range, and is also another milestone in the realignment of Volkswagen R that started in 2019. Jost Capito, managing director of the Group’s in-house performance brand, explains: “We are currently vigorously expanding the Volkswagen R range. Following the compact CUV models – T-Roc R1and T-Roc Cabriolet R-Line2 – Volkswagen R is introducing another sport utility vehicle within a very short space of time – the Touareg R, which has a quite unique position and unrivaled charisma.” The Touareg R is synonymous with a new and intelligent level of electric performance in segment of large touring SUVs.

Authentic, avant-garde, practical. Volkswagen R is responsible for the visual and technical configuration, and with it the conceptual direction of the new model. The Touareg R is based on the third generation of the product line launched in 2018, which in turn was an evolution of the model first introduced in 2002. All current Touareg models feature a dynamic and elegant design, maximum safety and long-distance comfort, state-of-the-art connectivity and a largely digitized cockpit. The overall concept is also designed with a high level of everyday usability in mind. Some 60% of all Touareg owners in Germany and 40% in Europe also use their SUV as a towing vehicle – remarkably high figures. The Touareg is often driven by sporty, active people who value the utmost safety, outstanding driving comfort, intuitive control and cutting-edge connectivity. The new Touareg R has been designed specifically for this extremely tech-savvy customer group. For the first time, they now have a performance model that can be driven temporarily in all-electric mode with zero local emissions. The new Touareg com- plies with the Euro 6d-TEMP-EVAP-ISC emission standard.

Extended powertrain range. The SUV product line is currently available with one turbocharged petrol engine (TSI) and three turbocharged diesel engines (TDI). The V6 TSI engine delivers a power output of 250 kW (340 PS)3. As a V6 TDI, the Touareg is available with two output levels: 170 kW (231 PS)4 and 210 kW (286 PS)5. The current most powerful Touareg is a V8 TDI with 310 kW (421 PS)6. Volkswagen is adding a range-topping model in the form of the new Touareg R.

Top R dynamic performance. As a typical Volkswagen R model, the Touareg R provides ultra-dynamic performance. Like at the touch of a button, the driver just has to press the accelerator to access the full output of the electric motor (100 kW/136 PS) and the turbocharged V6 petrol engine (250 kW/340 PS) as required. The two drive systems can then be combined in a boost function to use the vehicle’s dynamic reserves – for instance to over- take another vehicle quickly and safely – and to exploit the full system power of 340 kW (462 PS). The maximum system torque is 700 Nm.

All-wheel drive hybrid. The hybrid drive of the Touareg R essentially consists of a 2,995 cm3 V6 turbocharged petrol engine, the electric drive motor and a lithium-ion battery (energy capacity of 14.1 kWh) built into the luggage compartment underbody. The power electronics convert the direct current of the battery into alternating current for the electric drive motor. An 8- speed automatic gearbox (with Tiptronic) and a transfer box transmit power to the front and rear axles (4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive). A center differential lock with asymmetric dynamic torque distribution (Torsen traction) acts as a transfer box for the flow of forces between the front and rear axle. A maximum of 70% of the drive force reaches the front axle and up to 80% reaches the rear axle.

All-electric drive up to 140 km/h. When first started, the Touareg R uses only the electric motor if the battery is sufficiently charged. This ensures that the SUV comes as close to zero emissions as possible, especially on short journeys. This hybrid strategy also provides the greatest savings potential. The Touareg R can be driven in all-electric mode at a speed of up to 140 km/h; above this, the V6 TSI is activated automatically – or at any time using kickdown. The maximum speed of the SUV is electronically regulated at 250 km/h.

Bir tüccar yapsa kara listeye girer, 2018 yılı sonunda belediyenin kasasında 102 milyon lira varken, piyasaya verdiği çeklerin ve ödeme emirlerinin toplamı 508 milyon liraydı.

Dolardan bile zarar

İstanbul, bir şehirden fazla, neredeyse bir ülke. Düşünün İstanbul’un ekonomisi 130 ülkeden büyük. Peki, onu yönetenlerin kafası bu vizyonda mıydı?

2017 yılında, yani sadece 3 yıl önce, dolar bir anda 3 lirayı aşmıştı. Cumhurbaşkanı Erdoğan yine “dolar bozdurma kampanyası” başlatmıştı. İBB de bu kampanyaya katıldı. Kasasındaki 41 milyon doları bozdurdu. Ama şöyle bir sorun vardı. İBB’nin borcunun 6 milyar 400 milyon lirası o an itibarıyla döviz üzerinden dış borçtu. Bu kez yeniden dolar almaya başlayan İBB, aradaki kur farkı nedeniyle 18 milyon lira zarar etti.

Hazal Ocak’ın kitabından öğreniyoruz, 2019 yılına gelindiğinde belediyede çalışan sayısı 13 bin 655 kişi. Kiralanan araba sayısı ise 1717. Yani her 8 çalışana bir araba düşüyor. Belediyede 8 genel sekreter ve yardımcısı, 28 daire başkanı, 100 müdür, 29 müdür yardımcısı ve 478 şef bulunuyor. Toplandığında 643 “yönetici” sıfatlı insan ediyor. Bütün yöneticilere birer kiralık araç dahi verilse geriye binin üzerinde araba kalıyor.

Belediye, hem bol bol araç kiralama ile yandaş sermayeyi zengin etti. Öte yandan fazla arabaları protokol imzaladığı yandaş vakıflara, projelere göndererek milletin malını onlar için kullandı. Seçim sonrasında Yenikapı’da sergilenen araçlarla başlayan tartışma, kamu kaynaklarının nasıl heba edildiğinin resmiydi.

Üstelik...

31 Mart seçimlerinden tekrarının yapıldığı 24 Haziran’a kadar el çabukluğuyla 517 araç iade edilmişti. Sergilenen 730 araç eklendiğinde fazladan yıllık kira gideri 35 milyon 750 bin lira, yakıt gideri ise 13 milyon 750 bin liraydı.

Hazal Ocak, kitabında iki seçim arası apar topar elden çıkarılan araçların peşine de düşmüş:

“Tam 104 tanesi lüks kategorisindeydi. 31 tane Opel Insignia, 15 tane Skoda SüperB, 37 tane Volkswagen Passat ve 18 tane de Caravelle, listede sıralanıyordu. Arabaların modelleri 2015 ile 2018 yılı arasında değişiyordu. Listede lüks araçların dışında 175 tane Renault Clio Sport, 57 tane de Renault Megane vardı.”

Üretmeden yağmalanan ekonomi

Düşünün, belediye kaldırımları parsellemiş, araçları kiralayan İSPARK diye bir şirket kurmuş. Nasıl olmuş ise bu da zarar etmiş. Yani sokaklara araçlar bedavaya park etse kamu bütçesi daha rahatlayacak. Bu kadar akıldışına çıkmış bir sistemden söz ediyoruz. Hazal Ocak’ın İhanet kitabından İSPARK’ın arpalığa dönüşmesinin hikâyelerini okuyoruz. Her gün tıklım tıkış bindiğimiz metrobüslerin alımında bile iflas etmiş bir şirkete milyonlarca Avro kazandırıldığını okuyup öfkeleniyoruz.

Söylemek istediğim açık...

Türk ekonomisi masalları bir yana, 25 yıl aynı zihniyetin yönettiği İstanbul’un ekonomisinin nasıl batırıldığını hiç anlatmıyoruz. Oysa İstanbul’un hikâyesi, Türkiye’nin hikâyesi. Dürüst olsak, devlet mallarını sattık, kamu mülkiyetini yandaşlarımıza yağmalattık, millete ait varlığı kendimiz için kullandık, üretime dayanmayan bir ekonomiyle sürekli tükettik diyeceğiz. Ama “ah şu dış güçler” ya da “bize operasyon yapıyorlar” diye anlatmak işimize geliyor.

Dikkat edin, Külkedisi’ni uçuran sihirli ayakkabıyı çalan dış güçler masalını ya da Pamuk Prenses’i zehirleyen kötü kalpli lobiler masalını dinlerken uyumayın. Çünkü uyursanız, daha da yoksullaşırsınız."

If you are looking for a used car, you probably want to spend the least money to get the best-looking car. As most people would do, you probably would see a few different cars and compare them by the exteriors and interiors before you decide which is your favorite car. If you don’t know much about cars, you would likely end up buying a Volkswagen car. Why? Because there are plenty of Volkswagen cars in the market with perfect shiny paint and good-looking synthetic leather seats. Volkswagen cars tend to be the cheapest cars available out there for the same year, exterior and interior conditions. I made the same mistakes. In 2018, when I started my car rental business, I didn’t have much money in hand. But I want to purchase as many cars as possible. I purchased about 25 cars in 2018. About 7 of them were Volkswagen . I purchased 4 Tiguan and 3 Passat CC. They all looked pretty new inside out. From the renter’s review, we can see that they loved the Volkswagen cars. But these Volkswagen cars started to show problems one after another after about 2 months. First, my 2009 Tiguan engine failed because the timing chain was off. Volkswagen Honolulu quoted about $6000 for the rebuild of the engine. That’s too much for me. Then I tried to watch YouTube videos about how to rebuild the engine. Luckily, the vw TSI engine is simple enough for DIY repair. I purchased parts such as head gaskets, cylinder head bolts, timing chain, timing chain lock tool, lower timing chain cover, and a tube of cylinder cover gasket. They cost me about 500 dollars, and I fished the jobs in a week. I kept telling me, I have saved about 5500 dollars on this car. Once the timing chain was done, the brake kept making squeezing noise. I was so surprised because all the brake pads were almost as thick as new. Then I googled the internet to find a solution. Many said it’s a common Volkswagen problem. One review said my Brand-new Volkswagen started to make squeezing noise after 2 months on the road…oh no... I can live with the squeezing noise as long as it can run and make money for me. But customers mention the squeezing noise and gave me bad reviews from time to time. After I fixed the engine for my 2009 Tiguan. My 2010 Volkswagen Passat CC had a problem with the transmission. Transmission repair is a much more complicated job. I decided to send it to a transmission shop to repair it. I spent about 3000 dollars for rebuilding the transmission…and about 2 months later, The same Tiguan that I rebuilt the engine by myself had a transmission problem. This time I didn’t want to invest more money in it. I finally sold it at 1000 dollars. The other Volkswagen cars were also problematic. I sold most of them and kept the ones with low mileages. Today there still about 3 Volkswagen cars in my fleet. I am planning to sell them all after the mileages getting higher.

Today, more than half of the electricity generated already comes from renewable sources. That is an essential prerequisite for making e-mobility sustainable for passenger cars as well as trucks and buses.” He went on to say: “We have several innovative e-mobility projects in Sweden, for example, Scania will soon begin testing self-driving electric buses for Stockholm’s public transport system.” Sweden is one of Europe’s largest markets for electric vehicles and therefore an important sales market for the Group’s electric models. With reference to Prince Carl Philip’s test drives, the Volkswagen Brand Board Member for Technical Development, Dr. Frank Welsch, commented: “Prince Carl Philip of Sweden is a talented racing driver and an expert on cars. He was a successful participant in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia from 2008 to 2011. And he visited the Rally Sweden and the Volkswagen Motorsport team.
