It's not fair that I can't use a cool train to get to another city. Sometimes I don't want to drive, or I want to read on the way, or I want to get hammered on the snack lady's cart full of overpriced novelty alcohol. Or, in most cases, it's that my car simply is unlikely to make it without exploding into some sort of Slinky-like arrangement of twisted metal and flaming fluids.
In this particular case, I wanted to buy another hooptie from the adjacent city. It is almost always the case that the desirable shitboxes crop up in the next town over, possibly because I've factory-farmed to extinction all the ones here. It would be silly to drive a car there, only to leave it behind so I could drive the new car back. And all of my friends are tired of my shit, as "give me a ride" often turns into "slowly pace me on the secondary highway for a couple hours while I stop every fifteen minutes to fix something that fell off."
Self-driving cars can't do that, either, because the United Nations decided that it was tantamount to torture to make them watch me do this to their fellow mechanical citizens. Yeah, tell that shit to my dentist, you Volkswagen-loving apparatchiks. Again, a train would be the perfect option, but it doesn't exist, so I have to use the inter-city bus line. That's great: nice and cheap, and it eventually departs and eventually arrives if you're not too worried about when "eventually" is. There's just one big problem.
You see, a bus uses an internal-combustion engine. Don't worry, I'm not going to get all "spinning magnets are the best" on you, I've blown up enough starters and alternators to make a mechanical engineer shit his pants and emotionally regress to preschool. This means that I feel compelled to operate the vehicle. Bus drivers do not like it when you do their job for them, so I spend the entire time biting my hands, trying not to floor the throttle and steer wildly into the left lane. While this is not atypical for bus passengers, it is considered incredibly rude.
As a result, I pretty much just end up playing car-racing videogames on my phone. This doesn't relax me in the least, mostly because Asphalt: Urban GT 2 for the Nokia N-Gage doesn't let you repair rust. How can you trust a car if you can't try to jack it up through the floorboard?

So, my dad does a bridge school at the university he teaches at (his is held in January and is a 4 day refresher course for professionals) but honestly, any one young who is interested in civil engineering…making popsicle stick bridges is where it starts.
The number one question is always “how much stupidity/natural disaster can you build against with the budget you’ve been given” and then the construction workers get to the design and go “oh fuck this engineer, he’s never spent a single day on the job site”
One, female engineers are always eager and encouraged early on, but then they run into the Good Old Boys Club. My dad is in the Club, kind of, but he literally married a female engineer back in the 80’s and is pretty upset when women drop out of the major or (like my mom) constantly run into issues where misogyny is a major factor (screaming tantrums out of a 50+ man) in upper management.
Two, construction workers who are handed the materials list and the blueprint are 90% of the time complaining about the fact that while they’re given the most “efficient” design for structural integrity and materials, they’re going to be labor intensive to either maintain, install, or repair.
Take the 2002 Volkswagen Beetle. What fucking engineer decided to put the steering fluid pump line OVER the timing belt? It DOES make the engine more compact. It does. It also requires, as part of regular maintenance, that you UNPLUG a line that is an absolute bitch to reconnect, and should only require maintenance or repair once every two years, to be disconnected JUST so that you can replace a belt that needs to be replaced “as needed” which really just means once a year if you buy the cheapest replacement.
And engineers DO THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS. Their job is to weigh costs of maintenance, repair, sustainability.
But the reality is that if they get paid big bucks to come up with “the most efficient design” they’ll also, as part of their licensing, be required to report the drawbacks of said design.
To be fair, some inefficient aspects only pop up after manufacturing the product. But the fact remains that corporations deliberately ignore stated engineering concerns or warnings based on aesthetic, planned obsolescence, etc. That, or manufacturing costs cause corporations to deliberately ignore engineering manufacturing requirements for a design from the very start.
Or! Plus, there really is a more efficient design and the market hasn’t caught on yet! This happens with aftermarket car parts a lot.
I guess long story short, I’m very happy that these girls are getting to test out legit bridge designs and that they have the same experiences my dad gave me and my sisters (every single science experiment issued by a teacher was met with “do you wanna build bridges or test concrete? A shrug is not a choice, here’s a quarter, heads for concrete tails for bridges.”) and while I have absolutely zero interest in building bridges or testing the strength of concrete as a living, I’m really glad that someone is making it an interesting group project for young people. I’m also glad that I was raised by engineers and am capable of thinking logically about structural integrity and cost management.

Name: Adrien “Axel” Leclerc
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Age: 26
Occupation: Mechanic, Tattoo Artist (Side Job)
Nationality: French
Vehicle: Old Beetle
Background:
Adrien Leclerc, known by his friends and clients as “Axel,” was born in the industrious outskirts of Marseille, France. His early years were spent immersed in the world of machinery, courtesy of his father, who was an amateur mechanic. From a young age, Axel was fascinated by engines and the intricate workings of machines. His father’s garage became his playground, where he learned to disassemble and reassemble everything from lawnmowers to old cars.
Axel’s passion for cars became evident when he inherited his father’s aging Volkswagen Beetle. Determined to restore it, he poured his heart and soul into the project, turning the dilapidated vehicle into a gleaming classic. This Beetle, now a symbol of his craftsmanship and dedication, remains Axel’s prized possession.
Relationship with Little Moon:
Axel’s relationship with Little Moon is marked by a blend of tough love and genuine care. When Little Moon attempted to steal from him, Axel saw beyond the youngen's actions and recognised the potential for growth. Rather than resorting to punishment, he offered him a job at his tattoo studio, giving him a chance to redeem himself. Their interactions often involve playful ribbing and mutual respect, with Axel acting as a mentor and a protective figure.
Career:
Axel’s primary role as a mechanic reflects his lifelong love for cars. His workshop, nestled in Marseille, is a sanctuary where the scent of motor oil mingles with the loud strains of rock and metal music. It’s a place where Axel’s skills are on full display, whether he’s repairing a classic car or customising a high-performance engine. His side job as a tattoo artist allows him to channel his creative energy into intricate designs, making his studio a popular destination for those seeking both artistry and personal connection.

Classic Cars: Axel’s restored Beetle is just one of many classic cars he adores. He frequently attends car shows and auctions, always on the lookout for rare and unique finds.
Rock/Metal Music: Axel’s love for rock and metal music is unwavering.

Tobacco: Smoking is a longstanding habit for Axel. He often takes breaks with a cigarette in hand, a habit that contributes to his distinctive scent.
Cooking: Axel is a talented cook, specialising in French cuisine. His ratatouille and coq au vin are well-loved by his friends and family.
Biking (not motorcycles): Although he dislikes motorcycles, Axel enjoys leisurely rides on his bicycle, particularly on scenic routes or along coastal paths.
Vintage Music Equipment: Axel has a collection of rare vinyl records and vintage music equipment, which he treasures for their history and sound quality.
Dislikes:
Motorcycles: Axel harbours a strong aversion to motorcycles, stemming from a traumatic accident involving a close friend.
Dishonesty: He values honesty and integrity deeply, finding deceit and dishonesty unacceptable.
Noise Complaints: While he enjoys loud music, Axel has little patience for neighbours who complain about the noise.
Fast Food: Axel prefers home-cooked meals over fast food, finding the latter lacking in quality and taste.
Overly Modern Technology: While he embraces useful technology, Axel is skeptical of overly complex gadgets that complicate rather than simplify life.
Crowded Places: Axel finds crowded environments stressful and overwhelming, preferring quieter, more serene settings.
Unnecessary Small Talk: He values meaningful conversations and finds superficial small talk tiresome and unproductive.
Personality Traits:
Loyal and Protective: Axel is fiercely loyal to those he cares about, often going to great lengths to support and protect them.
Hardworking: His dedication to his work, whether as a mechanic or a tattoo artist, is evident in everything he does.
Creative: Axel’s creativity is evident in both his mechanical work and his tattoo designs, blending technical skill with artistic expression.
Grumpy but Soft-Hearted: Though he may come across as gruff, those close to him know that Axel has a deeply compassionate and caring nature.
Secrets:
Past Love: Axel once had a deeply significant romantic relationship that ended in heartbreak, which has shaped his cautious approach to love and relationships.
Hidden Talent: Axel is a skilled guitarist, a talent he keeps private and uses as a personal escape when he’s alone in his garage.
Fun Facts:
Signature Smell: Axel is known for his distinctive scent of motor oil and tobacco, which has become a part of his identity.
Unique Tattoos: His body is covered in tattoos, each with its own story or significance, including a few secret designs known only to him.
Secret Recipe: Axel’s homemade ratatouille is a closely guarded family recipe, often a hit at gatherings with friends and family.
Collector: He has an eclectic collection of vintage car parts and rock band memorabilia, each piece holding sentimental value and telling a story.
Cooking Skills: Axel’s cooking skills extend beyond French cuisine; he is also adept at making traditional dishes from other cultures.
Music Enthusiast: Axel owns a collection of rare vinyl records and vintage music equipment, a hobby he indulges in during his downtime.
Community Involvement: Despite his gruff exterior, Axel is actively involved in local community events, often volunteering his mechanical skills or organizing charity car shows.

When to Call a Professional for VW Push Button Start Problems?
Tumblr media
Technology has made many things easier :) :) :)
Take push-button start for example... this technology has made cranking a car a whole lot easier. Unlike the traditional engine cranking method, the push-button start mechanism does not require the ignition key to be slid into the keyhole to start the engine. Simply, having the ignition key with you will do the trick. All you have to do is to keep the key in your pocket or laptop bag.
As you read this blog post, you will come to know;
  How does push-button start work?
What would cause a push button start to malfunction? &
What can you do to get the issue resolved?
Plus, we'll also discuss some of the early symptoms that could indicate a push-button start problem in a car. So, what are we waiting for… let’s get started.
Brief Discussion on the Working of Push Button Start System
For a push-button start system to work, the following three conditions must be met;
The vehicle must be in PARK
The brake pedal must be pressed
You must have a properly functioning key fob
The key fob essentially sends a unique signal. Upon detection of this signal, your vehicle's onboard computer will allow you to start the engine. This so-called keyless ignition system not only makes it convenient to start the car but also deters theft. But, just like any other system in your Volkswagen, the push button start system can malfunction. Want to know what can cause a vehicle's push button start system to malfunction? Well, read on to find out…
Things That Can Cause the Push Button Start System in Your VW to Malfunction
The push button start system of your Volkswagen can malfunction due to several different reasons. Some of them are listed below…
#1- Key fob battery is dead
If your key fob's battery has reached the end of its usable life, it will no longer be able to transmit the unique signal your vehicle's onboard computer relies on to activate the push-button start system. So, if your VW's keyless ignition is not working like it used to, have its key fob battery checked immediately. If it is dying, get it replaced.
#2- Key fob is damaged
Your VW's push-button start system will not work if the key fob is physically or water damaged. At the most basic a key fob is made of a short-range radio transmitter, a radio frequency identification chip, and an antenna. If any of these components malfunction, the push button start of your vehicle won't work. If the damage is beyond repair, you may need a new key fob.
#3- Fault in the vehicle
If nothing is wrong with the key fob, yet you are still having trouble starting your VW, the problem may be with the push button start system itself. The push-button start system has many different components including a computer. If there is something wrong with any of these parts, you will not be able to start your car.
#4- Electrical issue/ dead car battery
Your VW's push-button start system requires electricity to function. If there is something wrong with the battery or other components of your vehicle's electrical system, the push button start system will stop working. Check the condition of your vehicle's battery periodically and if you suspect a problem, replace it right away.
VW’s Push Button Start Not Working: Things That You Can Do
If you suspect a push button start problem in your VW, don’t take it for granted. Before you visit the nearest car service center to get the problem fixed, do the following checks;
Test the key fob battery to see if it is in good condition
Check if there is anything wrong with your vehicle’s battery
Check for signs of physical damage on the key fob
If the key fob has been damaged by water, you may need to replace it.
In Summary;
The push-button start system was intended to make our daily commute a whole lot easier. But, guess what? It can malfunction just like any other system. Therefore, if you suspect a problem with the push button start of your VW, reach out to a trusted car service center to get the problem resolved as soon as possible.

Kouros & Body Kouros (Yves Saint Laurent)
What I'm about to say might cause a platoon of fragrance chauvinists to swallow their tongues. For them, YSL Kouros is the genius loci of an inviolably male precinct, a sacred scent with whom no mere woman may traffic. The idea of me rocking their filthy-dirty stonking wunderfume would be purest anathema-- and yet I'm doing it as we speak, and the words that come most readily to mind are "big ol' cuddlebear".
Cue the falling-upon of swords!
All right, look. I won't emasculate Kouros entirely. This 1981 monolith deserves all the he-manly epithets with which the decades have graced it. It IS raunchy. It IS racy. It's hung like Liam Neeson and has a half-life that rivals vanadium. But everything about it that could be overwhelming (the brisk face-slap of aromatic wormwood, the whiplash sting of civet-soaked leather) is tempered by something remarkably benign (rosy florals, ozonic amber, the scent of Chinese five-spice). Mad, bad, and dangerous to know? Like fun. This is no angry deity, but a gentle, downy-cheeked, smiling youth of the sort immortalized in a thousand Tom of Finland illustrations. He knows how much further a soft word will get him than a growl; that macho pose is just the icing on some very, very sweet cake.
So here's to the boy who cleans up nice and plays well with girls. He'll never need to twist my arm. (Hear that, Hugo Boss?)
**********
Now let's talk about who such boys grow up to be... and what they wear. As the child is the father to the man, Kouros set the stage for Body Kouros. An improvement? Let's see.
**********
My first car was a 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle, light blue with one orange door. I named him Henry and loved him like a brother. Who cares if he came without a sun roof? I covered his inside domed ceiling with glow-in-the-dark stars and planets. Forget the sun; I had an entire galaxy overhead.
How on earth, you rightly ask, will this tie in with YSL Body Kouros? Buckle up and sit tight, passenger. We'll get there when we get there.
From learning to drive stickshift to knowing exactly how high to turn up the heat before one's shins begin to roast, the sense of intimacy one develops with a VW Beetle offers a satisfaction unlike any other in the realm of car ownership. Both my father and my grandfather were "Bug" loyalists; when the latter deeded me his frayed copy of John Muir's 1969 classic How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot, I felt as though I had been handed my birthright. From its stained pages, I culled the rudiments of DIY repair-- no despised task, since the boy in me loved to get engine grease all over his hands. I learned how to check my own oil and fluids, strip and reconnect wires, and reset by hand that tiny timing gear that used to cause me to stall coming out of first.
For engine problems I couldn't solve myself, I took Henry to the local VW garage, a dilapidated old structure on a winding back country road. There, the aging hippie mechanics unfailingly called me ma'am even though I was clearly a 22-year-old punk chick in Docs and ripped cargo shorts. Vintage VW mechanics are a unique lot, because they love their subject just as much as their clients do. Where other mechanics might speak condescendingly to a female car owner or even try to bilk her, VW mechanics recognized the engine grease under my fingernails as a sort of fraternity signal. And when they saw my copy of Muir in the back seat, the floodgates opened. They'd stand with me for an hour, speaking honestly and passionately about that quirky little automobile we all adored.
Something about leaving Henry at the garage amidst a yard of other Beetles (red with one blue door, yellow with one purple door, silver with both doors in apple green) made me happy-- as though I was dropping him off for a playdate with his friends. I think it made him happy too, because when I returned to pick him up, he purred. The mechanics would stand outside and wave goodbye as I puttered down the street. In the rearview mirror of hindsight, I still see them clearly: men like my father, like my grandfather; the salt-of-the-earth kind on whom you can "absotively posilutely" rely.
And today -- a bright, cloudless day blessed with cool weather, perfect for a drive -- I'm wearing Body Kouros in their honor.
If you've ever personally been acquainted with an auto mechanic, you know that even when they're off duty and in civilian wear, the faint, discreet odor of engine grease and motor oil hovers over their skin. If you're like me, you find this aroma extremely pleasant-- evoking, as it does, the satisfaction derived from worthwhile labor. To me, Body Kouros says one thing, simply and cleanly: job well done.
It starts off simultaneously tart and soapy, shimmering with a bright overlay of something close to gasoline fumes. (If this doesn't appeal to you, don't worry-- it evaporates quick enough, though not so quickly that it evades the notice of female gearheads.) The clean soapy quality is soon joined by a pleasantly dirty licorice-cedar accord, as if our dream mechanic came home reeking of an honest day's work and is now towelling off after a quick shower. Hints of Lava Pumice Soap and shaving cream still cling to his skin, mingling with his own natural musk and creating the air of a healthy masculine specimen.
As the drydown approaches, a note of mace finally begins to assert itself. Mace and its sibling spice nutmeg share many olfactory traits, but temperature is not one of them. Where nutmeg lends a certain coolness to a fragrance, mace offers a sense of low, steady heat like a lit charcoal pastille-- at first glimmering like an ember in the background, then catching on and increasing by degrees to a fiery red glow. (Perhaps our mechanic is a little sweaty, even after his shower; he's heading out to the shady backyard to relax in the hammock with an ice-cold bottle of beer.)
This mace note is one that I admire immensely. It's everything I love about nutmeg, only more so-- amped up and ramped up, holding firm with no shimmy at fourth gear. It radiates animal contentment and self-confidence, and at the same time, harmonizes with that motor-oil note to keep it nicely in check.
Body Kouros brings new meaning to the word "serviceable". Free of pretensions and frills, it conceals no secret layers. Yet it projects a dependability and steadiness of character that are far more valuable than so-called elegance. Above all, Body Kouros is classless in the best sense of the word-- egalitarian, unconstrained by matters of status or appearance. Wear it as a second skin to feel supremely at home in your own.
Scent Elements: Aldehydes, artemisia, coriander, clary sage, cinnamon, bergamot, carnation, iris, jasmine, geranium, patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver, honey, leather, tonka, labdanum, ambergris, musk, civet, vanilla (Kouros); incense, eucalyptus, cedarwood, mace, camphorwood, benzoin (Body Kouros)

Top row: Magazine article and poster from the Splash Grand Prix Middle row: Magazine cover and poster from the California Amphibious Racing Circuit Bottom row: Posters for the Japan Amphibious Endurance Tournament
With the rising popularity in amphibious cars, it only made natural sense to try and push them to their limits, to see just how fast they could go over both land and sea. As a result, several amphibious racing circuits arose all around the world. We've got some advertising material here, as well as some details and descriptions about some vehicles from three of those circuits.
The Splash Grand Prix was started in 1947 by a group of New England amphibious automobile enthusiasts who wanted to see just how fast their boat-cars could go. The result was the Splash Grand Prix, a 5-lap race around a course that takes place on equal amounts land and sea. While not as fast as some of the other circuits, it's been described as more high intensity, shorter-range event, with the winding spaghetti-like roads of the New England area being the perfect challenge for drivers to navigate. The event is a very friendly and humble affair, with people bringing their tents, grills, and coolers in a huge picnic/cookoff style event that culminates into watching the big race. Cars are usually modified or custom-built roadsters, though there have been a few modern-style entries (but nothing too flashy, as there are strict component and weight requirements). The red car in the article to the left is the Hammnicar III, built by John M. Hammond the Fourth in 1982, as a tribute to the then-lost Hammnicar I, and the seldom-seen Hammnicar II. It was used in the Splash Grand Prix in the 1982, 1983, and 1984 seasons, winning the first two, but by 1984, it was out of date. The Hammnicar II was based off of a VW Superbeetle, not unlike the Catfish, but was designed as a tandem-control vehicle, powered by a Chevrolet Corvair Turbo 180 hp turbo motor, rather than the original Volkswagen flat 4. It competed in the super-modified 200 hp class, and was able to achieve speeds on the water of up to 40 knots, while able to do 120 mph on land.
On the other side of the country, we'll find the California Amphibious Racing Circuit. Founded in 1954, you'll find that this event is the polar opposite of the Splash Grand Prix. Loud, bombastic cars with sleek designs and souped-up engines are the stars of the show, and sponsorships litter the sides of the cars like a NASCAR vehicle. Everyone and their grandmother is trying to sell you something at the CARC, and the atmosphere is intoxicatingly overwhelming. The race is televised across the country, with millions tuning in to see these amphibious beasts rip across the sand and surf at speeds that can reach over 130 mph! In 2003, Thompson Hydrosports, a well-known homologation manufacturer, finally decided to dip it's toes into building it's own entry into the 2004 California Circuit season, building the Thompson Tornado (the vehicle on the magazine to the left), powered by the homologation 350 Chevrolet, machined to produce 500 horsepower. The vehicle itself was built from fiberglass and aluminum, and had a top speed on the water of 90 knots, while on land it could achieve 160 mph. The Tornado would become infamous once it entered production in the next year, for being super fast, agile, but most importantly, dangerous. of the 52 built, including the 2 prototypes, 31 of them were damaged beyond repair, or lost in accidents, with a total of 8 fatal accidents killing one or both of the crew. The most notable of the accidents being of the 41st production vehicle, driven by Robert Hall, and James Williams as Navigator, was lost in an 87 knot roll, the vehicle disintegrating around the crew, with nothing of the wreck being recovered, other than two of the wheels.
Crossing the pond, you'll find the Japan Amphibious Endurance Tournament, an affair squarely in the middle of the SGP and the CARC in terms of flashiness. While a little late to the party in 1970, it is nonetheless a beloved event enjoyed by racing enthusiasts across the globe, with events being televised across the world. While CARC vehicles are built for speed, JAET vehicles are built for endurance, boasting innovative designs meant to be efficient and comfortable while still being powerful. Being an endurance tournament, the track usually spans the entire length of Japan in both land and sea, meaning the races can sometimes take over 2 days to fully complete. Pit stops are placed at key points in the race (usually in the transitions between ground and water), but some legs of the race can result in the drivers going for over 8 hours straight! The car featured in the leftmost advertisement is the 1999 ALIAH, developed by the Japanese Hydronautics Committee in 1998. A non-government entity, like the FIA, the JHC built the ALIAH as a successor to Project Kikka, an unbuilt prototype for a 200 mph on road racer, and a 100 knot superboat. ALIAH was built to succeed in nearly as many areas, using a folding wheel mechanism, to allow all 6 wheels to be hidden away to allow for higher speeds on the water. The actual ALIAH travelled up to 185 mph on land, and 83 knots on the water. During testing, however, the vehicle had an engine fire, from it's twin Toyota 1GZ-FE V12 engines, that produced 800 hp each, to the rear 4 wheels, or the hydrojets at the back. Posthumously, the gearbox was found to be at fault, though the EFS (Engine Fire Suppressants) were used, and saved the boat. This Magazine cover shows the post-fire repairs, missing aerodynamic panels, and allowing the internals to be seen. The ALIAH was used to demonstrate the CLASS VI racing series, and CLASS VI is still ongoing, though the current dominant force as of the 2023 season are turbine-electric hybrids, allowing for intense acceleration on land, and intense acceleration on ground. The ALIAH is on display in Karuizawa, at the JHC's headquarters/museum for hydro-racing. It is on display in situ post testing, with the fire damage still visible in places, though repairs had been made after the fire, which are also visible.

How Long Does a Volkswagen Service Take?
When it comes to maintaining your Volkswagen, timely servicing is crucial for ensuring its performance, safety, and longevity. However, one question that often arises is: How long does a Volkswagen service take? The answer depends on the type of service your car needs. Whether it’s a routine check-up or a more comprehensive service, visiting a reliable Volkswagen car service center is the key to quick and efficient maintenance.
Factors Influencing Service Time
The duration of a Volkswagen service can vary based on several factors:
