An Outline

1) The Known: Introducing the Topic

Opening the essay with baseline/ known perceptions of North Korea. Discussing the nature of the regime, its’ leaders (things media has covered). 

2) A Brief History

Establishing important events in history that made the two Koreas that we know today. 

3) The Unknown: What Media doesn’t cover

Shedding light on the not-so-talked-about notions of North Korea through testimonies/ stories of North Koreans, North Korean refugees/ defector, South Koreans, Korean diaspora.

Making sense of all the information from points 1-3 through my voice/ the voice of my 3rd person character, a Korean American.

Project Proposal

Through my visual essay, I will be creating a narrative exploring both broad and intricate perceptions of North Korea, stemming my writing and imagery from testimonies/ personal anecdotes of those affiliated with North Korea (ex. North Koreans, refugees/ defectors, missionaries, South Koreans, Korean diaspora, etc). This essay seeks to bring a more raw representation of the current crisis in North Korea, bringing awareness and lending a voice to the voiceless who continue to suffer under the regime.
