Vogue 100: A Century of Style
This week I visited the Vogue 100 exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery and I was blown away by what I saw.
When you first enter you are immediately faced with Kate Moss flashing her underwear. The picture of Moss, shot in 2008 by Mario Testino, is simultaneously beautiful and grotesque. The delicate colors of a classic painting marred by the dingy atmosphere of a room long since shown any care, the soft femininity of Kate’s dress tainted by work boots and a military jacket. Not merely meant to shock, this is an image which exemplifies the 1990′s grunge culture at its height. More than just a fashion exhibition to show the beautiful clothes and people of days gone by, this is a historical record of societal changes over the last 100 years, and a reflection of how fashion and culture are intertwined. Vogue mirrors its times and put fashion in the context of the wider world.
From its glamorous beginnings in 1916 is as much a tale of changing fashions as it is of changing values. The exhibition is laid out in decades beginning with the most recent and traveling back in time. Social change is viewed through the glossy filter of fashion, fame and wealth.
Ironically, as you travel back the past feels more real, the fashion magazine moves glamour and beauty to center stage, the poses and clothes become more rigid, however, there is an honesty, less superficiality. For me this lies in the fact it becomes more about the fashion and less about the famous faces wearing them. It becomes something more tangible, more about the craft and less about a ‘concept’.
1941 picture by Beaton entitled Fashion Is Indestructible shows the back of an exquisite figure in gloves and hat, silhouetted between two pillars on a bombsite
Twiggy, shot in 1967 by Ronald Traeger, captures all the exuberance of the era. The hope and freedoms which felt possible.
Many see fashion now as an alien concept, something strange and difficult to understand. Like modern art it is seen as too complicated to comprehend or silly to even take seriously. Looking back through the decades of Vogue gives us a glimpse into a world of fashion that at its core is about style and the beauty that can be found in the most basic of acts, dressing oneself.
This exhibition absolutely celebrates style over fashion.
