Creating Compelling Visual Novel Characters
When we first came up with the concept for our upcoming visual novel, Breathless Winds, a big fear I had was developing characters who were uninteresting or who overlap too much with one another. It’s natural that some characters won’t click with some players, but I think most visual novel fans can think of a VN they’ve played where one character rarely clicks with anyone.
Writing advice is a dime a dozen, and different things work for different people, but here’s what works for me: When I’m making characters for a work of fiction, I ask two questions: why are they here and what do they want?
1. Why are they here?
This is a question most of us writers find ourselves asking when some weird concept in our brain morphs into a character, usually at 2 AM, and won’t leave us alone. Joking aside, this refers to a character’s purpose in a story. What narrative role do they fulfill?
I think it’s best to develop characters that reflect your visual novel’s theme in different ways. If you’re writing a supernatural story, maybe you have one character who’s a supernatural skeptic and another who’s a believer. Maybe you have one or more characters who are supernatural in some way and characters who were negatively affected by this. Creating characters with very different relationships to the concept of ‘the supernatural’ creates a sense of conflict, which is important to most storytelling.
I wanted four love interests who would be completely distinct and compelling but still reflect the themes of Breathless Winds. The game’s story is about change and nature, so we wanted our characters to have a relationship with each of these concepts.
I wanted to have a way to reflect ‘change’ and ‘nature’ in one - this led to me theming the love interests after the changing seasons. Although “the four seasons” is a very common theme, I thought that specifically the transition of seasons - Spring to Summer, Summer to Fall - would allow for more depth than “This person is serene but also cold, like Winter.”
Lantana represents a strong change - from Winter to Spring. The way I represented this in a character is that, in her youth, Lantana represented Winter - she was cold, cruel, and uncompromising. She bullied our heroine and had a troubled relationship with her family.
When our heroine meets her again as an adult, she’s surprised to see how much Lantana has changed. Lantana is calm, empathetic, and only teases people a little bit - yet an undercurrent of guilt is present through her character. Spring is much more compromising and warm, but some of the chill remains. Doris, our artist, would be able to work these concepts into the characters’ designs.
Basically, I thought “how would the change from Winter to Spring be represented in a person” and made it up from there. Your answer would probably be different than mine, and that’s what’s beautiful about writing.
In coming up with this background for Lantana, we learned about her personality, her history with the protagonist, and a great question which could be a major part of her route (”What caused this change in her personality?”).
A good way to develop an eye for theming is to ask “Why are they here?“ for characters in visual novels you play, yourself. The more you pick apart media that works, the more you understand how to reverse-engineer it and use it to your advantage.
2. What do they want?
So you’ve got some characters - great! But you don’t just want them to sit around with nothing to do, right? I think the greatest cause of boring characters is that they don’t want anything. They feel like they’re just there as accessories to the protagonist.
This is a great way to develop a character-driven plot as well. Like maybe all you know is that you want to write a game about gender you want to have four characters themed around the changing of seasons. What happens in it? What do your characters want, and more importantly, what will they do to get it?
Let’s talk about Prince Valerian, the love interest most driven by his goals in Breathless Winds. His goal is to find a cure for the King’s illness and save his life. Like a toddler, it’s great to start asking “why”-type information gathering as much as possible about your characters. Why is the King ill, and what type of illness is it? Why does Valerian need a special cure to save him? How is our heroine, Poppy, involved? What will happen if Valerian fails?
Stories are often more compelling with high stakes. If the King just had a cold, there would be no urgency to Valerian’s actions - he likely wouldn’t start a quest at all. So let’s say the King’s life is in danger from an incurable curse, and Valerian’s only hope to save him is a mythical plant that can cure all ills known as ‘Panacea’.
Characters are rarely single-minded, though. What else does Valerian want? I think this is a great time to ask why your protagonist would date this love interest and vice versa - have you ever read a story where two characters are in love for no other reason than “they have to be in love”? Writing a character with wants can help you avoid that.
In terms of romance, Valerian is far more focused on his quest and finding a partner. But if he were to desire a partner, he would need someone who’s an equal to him who could get past his cold exterior and allow him to open up. As a Prince, Valerian has never been able to be vulnerable. He has no tolerance for weakness, attributing to his cold demeanor. Poppy, our heroine, doesn’t believe that kindness is equivalent to weakness. That starts the spark of attraction - she’s able to get through to him and challenge him as an equal, and this proves that he can trust her with more of his deeper feelings.
By starting with a single concept (”Valerian should be from far away and only meets the heroine because he’s visiting for some purpose”), we end up with a compelling character motive that would drive his romance route (can Poppy help him find Panacea, save Castle Island, and earn his respect and love in the process?).
Not every character has to be this driven. If everyone were facing life-or-death stakes all the time, they would lose meaning. Gallardia’s want is more simple - to provide for his family and protect those he loves.
By asking information gathering/”why” questions, we can develop this further. Why is Gallardia a major provider to his family? How does he provide? What hardships has he faced in the past?
This is just advice for developing main characters. Side characters are just as important, but rarely need to be fleshed out this much. Their goals can be as simple as “emotionally support the heroine in her quest”.
TL;DR
If you want to write compelling characters, make them relevant to your game’s theme and make them want something. Ask a lot of questions and don’t be afraid to change your answers later.
