WISDOM SAVE, DC 13: 4 ( CRITICAL FAILURE ) ( 1 + 3 )
-> They've been avoiding the dance floor all night, because they don't know how to dance and they don't want to. They have closed their ears off to the music, their eyes on the floor away from the lights, and if they had stood there on the corner of some random stone building for however long this charade seemed to go on for until everything returned to normal in the city, it would have been stubbornly fine by them. But there is the sharp sting of a violin that draws them---not because it is particularly melodic or ominous, but simply because it is a high pitched sound that towers over everything else, and they are only human. They are only Orpheus at the mouth of the underworld, standing in the light, turning his head a little too soon for Eurydice's escape: there is only one version of this story.
-> They catch just a glimpse of it---of him. Older than he was, gangly teenage limbs slightly out of place under an embellished and patterned coat decorated with silver, his hair grown out in curls that stop near his shoulders, shorter than their own. But they still look the same as they ever did: twins, different but alike, the shape of his nose and his green eyes a little too yellow to feel like anything but a freshly sprouted leaf. And they move towards the ballroom without thinking about it; they rush, almost, if they hadn't to be so mindful of walking in these shoes. But they are in the crowd of the dance, eyes frantic, breath still in their throat because he can't be here, he can't. They suck in a sharp breath that barely makes it all the way to their lungs and the music is starting again, the next dance ( and they have to dance. they have to, to see if it's really him, if they can find him. if everything has been a terrible dream this whole time and they've left home for nothing, lost in a dragon's curse. )
-> When they turn, hands groping blindly for any available dance partner, someone has already reached for their trembling hands. Their head is the last thing to go, and their weary eyes are filled with as much trepidation as if they were walking head first to their own death. But the face there is one they recognize; it makes their cracked voice stable enough to speak.
"Vlos---"
-> Their friend. A demon, yes, but their dearest friend.
"I saw him---he's there, my brother, he can't be---"

Here is a 2022 redraw of the popular Sailor Moon redraw challenge
I forgot how much I loved the redesign of the Sailor Scouts I did. Sometimes I don't see how much I've grown as an artist when I don't look back at my art. Seeing the drawings next to each other really put that in perspective.

Vodafone Report on Cellular Connected Drones
Vodafone UK has published the findings of a study they commissioned regarding the potential benefits to the UK of safe and secure drone use. Working with WPI Economics, the report uses five case studies as its basis and draws some interesting conclusions regarding its potential in the UK. Whilst acknowledging the potential of drones to improve productivity, aid the emergency services, and reduce workplace dangers, much emphasis is placed on the public perception of the threat that they pose. Recent polling suggests that 80% of the public would support wider drone use if increased security measures were in place. They cite the fact that the greatest benefits that drones have to offer come from flights Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) – a fact widely acknowledged in commercial circles. Cellular connected drones that can be tracked and controlled beyond the VLOS restrictions and posited as one of the potential solutions. Cellular connectivity allows for Unmanned Traffic Management Systems to be introduced as well as allowing locations tracked and the establishment of No-Fly Zones that cold force drones to hover or land in cases of an incursion. Public opinion on the positive potential of drones was reported to below. A fact which the report claims stems from a lack of understanding. It is felt that ‘increased familiarity with drone usage can drive more positive perceptions’. The poll that Vodafone carried out on more than 2000 adults suggested that public support was far higher than average when drone usage was linked to the emergency services, agriculture and construction. So this led them to base the report on five case studies - Drones delivering medical goods - Monitoring and responding to emergency situations - Reporting to fires - Surveying and monitoring construction - Improving agriculture productivity Each of these case studies aims to identify and quantify the benefits of drone use in these sectors, showing substantial advantages over traditional methods. They make three recommendations to the UK government to ensure the establishment of safe and secure drone practices. Establishment of a blue light fund to allow emergency services and the NHS to trial drone use to see where benefits could be found - Establish testing facilities for UTM and BVLOS operations - Explore the value of cellular connectivity for establishing UTM systems and electronic conspicuity. #cellularconnecteddrones #ukdronefuture #ukdronelaws #ukdronepilots #ukdrones #ukelectronicconspicuity #vodafonedronereport

-> There is the fleeting feeling that Vlos is always protecting them; they feel the faints traces of a magic they can't clearly identify and feel others not give them a second look on their way to other sections of the party, or the dance floor, or chasing ghosts of their own. When things from a life they have never lived scrape them raw he bandages the wound and reminds them that persisting is not the only quality to being alive---even now, there is nothing in their vision but his gentle expression, pushing out the phantoms that try to draw them into their own hall of infinite mirrors and ends they couldn't reach. ( perhaps grief was also a delight, to some. that moment of thinking someone is alive before remembering they're dead again. ) One of their hands comes to lay over his own on their cheek. They take a wobbly inhale of breath until they can feel it in the bottom of their diaphragm. Hold it and try to relax.
"... a balcony, maybe..."
-> They're safe. It's okay. Vlos is here, they're safe. He squeezes their hands and they try to chip away at their tension; they know they need not hide how they feel when Vlos was privy to the surface of their thoughts, but they felt they should keep up some kind of face anyways. They squeeze his hands back, maybe tighter than needed. Don't look at the dance floor. There is nothing there for them.
"I'm here, too. Don't go too far."
Gentle hands reach up to touch Lyric's face, wiping away tears and making sure that make up never gets smudged. His warm orange eyes adjust as he makes sure to fill Lyric's gaze. "It's lying because this is how the fae have fun, not always. But many are cruel." His tone is gentle and low, using his words to create a small bubble so people stop staring and just move past them.
"It's rough... isn't it? Seeing how you think things might have turned out if you hadn't have done something?" Vlos sighs a little as he speaks from experience. "I know how you feel, that raw feeling. We can find somewhere quiet to go, a balcony perhaps? I'm here Lyric, you're safe." The last words are said to comfort himself and Lyric. He does not want to Lyric to be alone in this moment, but he also doesn't want to be alone either.
As his tail sways behind him slowly, he moves his hands back to Lyric's to squeeze them gently. He is doing everything he can to ignore the taunting coming from behind him that dares to invade his mind. He doesn't want to draw the ire of the archfey, so he will not disturb the event, but he is struggling with his willpower.

Flight Planning: Hazard Vulnerability Assessments https://www.dronepilottrainingcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Hazard-Vulnerability-Analysis-Graph-for-Drones.jpg
New Post has been published on DronePilotTrainingCenter.comDrone Pilot Training Center:
By Brandon Guillot, RPC, MAS
Completing a risk assessment prior to a flight is a critical Flight Planning step for remote pilots. Risk assessment involves identifying potential hazards, assessing the risk of that hazard, and creating a strategy to reduce the risk. Remote Pilots in Command (RPICs) need a systematic process to gather all data together and make the final “Go” or “No Go” decision before the flight mission. A Hazard Vulnerability Analysis (HVA) in the aviation safety world is a process to identify hazards the pilot may encounter during the mission based on likelihood and severity.
This graphical display of an HVA (shown below) is an example of how the tool is used to take identified hazards and rank them according to how likely the hazard would occur and how severe it would be if it did occur. It is critical to examine all factors that could affect your flight as part of your Flight Planning process, because those factors will help determine which areas require mitigation. Based on the information gathered, the RPIC can determine methods used to mitigate each risk.
Hazard Vulnerability Analysis Graph
Identify Potential Hazards
Imagine the following scenario: You have been hired by an engineering firm to fly a photo map of an Interstate bridge. You have followed the Flight Planning items that we have discussed in previous articles — the Airspace is Class G, so no issues there. Weather will be sunny, so your Control Station visibility will be at least 3 miles and no clouds. But the winds are at 13 miles per hour and could increase.
Furthermore, when you assess the Environment, you have a series of concerns. You will be launching immediately next to the Interstate in the wake turbulence zone of vehicles, and then you will be flying over trees on each side of the bridge to avoid flying over people in their vehicles.
You run the risk of going Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) because of the trees, and even worse, you may have video signal breakup or even loss as a result. Also, it is a hot, sunny day which may have additional impacts on your fatigue levels leading to issues with decision making and mission effectiveness through hazardous attitudes.
For the purposes of this discussion, we will focus on four potential hazards identified in our scenario: 1) High winds on the leeward side of the tree line; 2) Wake turbulence from passing vehicles; 3) Tree line causing a BVLOS situation and video degradation; and 4) Heat effects on flight crew members.
Assess the Potential Hazards using the HVA Graph
Next, we will examine each potential hazard identified in terms of how likely and severe it could be. The most severe types of sUAS accidents result in injury to people or property damage, so we can use that as our “Very High” or Category 5 Hazard Severity limit on the HVA scale. We might assess each potential hazard as follows:
1) High winds in the leeward side of the tree line are Likely (Category D). The severity of a loss of control at altitude is probably High (Category 4). This combination would place this threat at a High level (D4), and it would require mitigating actions.
2) Wake turbulence from passing vehicles are Very Likely (Category E). Because of the proximity to those vehicles, the severity would be a Very High level (Category 5). This combination makes this a High level (E5) threat, and it would be our most serious issue to consider for mitigation.
3) A BVLOS situation above the tree line is both legally and technically dangerous, and it may be quite Likely (Category D). However, the severity would be lower since it probably would not result in a loss of control making it Moderate (Category 3). This combination is a threat of a Moderate level (3D), and it would still need to be mitigated.
4) Heat issues affecting crew members is Very Likely (Category E) if the mission will go over a series of hours. It could result in High severity levels (Category 4) due to heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke. This combination is a High level threat (E4), so it will need to be mitigated as well.
Determine How to Reduce the Risk of Potential Hazards
Now that each potential hazard has been assessed using our HVA graph, it is crucial for the RPIC to determine the appropriate methods to mitigate the hazards. For mitigation, our efforts will focus on either reducing the Likelihood that an incident will occur or diminishing the Severity in the event the hazard occurs. We might mitigate each potential hazard as follows:
1) For the issue of high winds, we can probably reduce both Likelihood and Severity as the result of our actions. For instance, I would recommend taking off away from traffic and slowly climbing in order to “feel out” the wind currents as they pass the tree line. It is important to climb over a safe area that would limit the potential of striking a vehicle in the event of a sudden loss of control. By slowly climbing and accounting for the wind, and by staying away from the vehicular traffic over a safe area, we can reduce the hazard to a Possible yet Slight risk (or a 2C).
2) For the issue of wake turbulence from vehicles, we could use Visual Observers to help call out gaps in traffic for our departure or arrival and reduce the Likelihood of getting into that wake turbulence. Having the option of launching from a safe point off the side of the road, away from traffic, would put our operations outside the envelope of that turbulence entirely. These elements could also reduce our hazard to safe levels (such as a 2C or below).
3) For our BVLOS situation, we really cannot mitigate the Severity—a BVLOS is illegal and dangerous, no matter where it occurs. However, we can reduce the Likelihood by choosing an appropriate Takeoff and Landing area that will allow us to maintain VLOS throughout the flight. We may even use multiple Takeoff and Landing sites throughout the project to avoid a BVLOS. While we cannot reduce the Severity, we can reduce the hazard Likelihood to a Low level (or a B3).
4) We know that heat will cause numerous problems for our crew, and it will be extremely Likely, simply because we will be outside on a hot day. However, we can diminish Severity by providing cover, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and plenty of hydration. We can mitigate the severe portions of the hazard by reducing the impact upon our crewmembers, reducing the hazard down to a Low level (or an E1).
Determine if the Mission can Safely Continue
In some situations, you may not be able to sufficiently reduce Likelihood or diminish Severity to acceptable levels. If Likelihood or Severity levels are not acceptable, the responsibility is on the RPIC to determine that the mission cannot safely continue in its current form. The RPIC should communicate results of the HVA with your client while also making suggestions about how to proceed with changes to the flight plan.
It is vital for remote pilots to gather the appropriate level of information for their flight operations before considering the feasibility of the mission. The RPIC who does not gather the necessary information will go into the final Hazard Vulnerability Analysis without specific information and will draw conclusions that could be in error. A series of poor decisions based on faulty information will increase the possibility of an accident or incident that could have been avoidable.
By gathering the critical information and honestly examining each potential hazard before we even unpack the batteries to fly, we all help ensure the safety and progress of sUAS in the professional setting.

The F-35 is a single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multi-role fighter. The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is the most lethal, survivable and connected fighter aircraft ever built. The F-35’s ability to collect, analyse and share data is a dominant force multiplier enhancing all airborne, surface and ground-based assets in the battlespace and enabling pilots in uniform to execute their mission and come home safe.
The F-35 is the result of the Defense Department’s Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program, which sought to build a multirole fighter optimized for the air-to-ground role with secondary air-to-air capability. The JSF requirement was to meet the needs of the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and allies, with improved survivability, precision engagement capability, and reduced life-cycle costs. By using many of the same technologies developed for the F-22, the F-35 has the opportunity to capitalise on commonality and modularity to maximise affordability.
It was designed to be America’s “premier surface-to-air missile killer and is uniquely equipped for this mission with cutting-edge processing power, synthetic aperture radar integration techniques and advanced target recognition,” according to Mark Shackelford, acquisition deputy to the assistant secretary of the US Air Force.
Lockheed Martin delivered nearly 300 F-35 aircraft operating from 15 bases globally, and the programme has achieved more than 140,000 flight hours.
F-35’s Mission Capability
Electronic Attack
Advanced electronic warfare capabilities enable the F-35 to locate and track enemy forces, jam radio frequencies and disrupt attacks with unparalleled precision. All three variants of the F-35 carry active, electronically scanned array (AESA) radars with sophisticated electronic attack capabilities, including false targets, network attack, advanced jamming and algorithm-packed data streams. This system allows the F-35 to reach well-defended targets and suppress enemy radars that threaten the F-35. Also, the ASQ-239 system provides fully integrated radar warning, targeting support, and self-protection, to detect and defeat surface and airborne threats.
While F-35 is capable of stand-off jamming for other aircraft — providing 10 times the effective radiated power of any legacy fighter — F-35s can also operate near the threat (‘stand-in’) to provide jamming power many multiples that of any legacy fighter.
Air-to-surface
The F-35’s very low-observable (VLO) stealth allows it to safely enter defended airspace areas without being seen by radars that 4th Generation and earlier legacy fighters cannot evade. The combination of the stealth features, active electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar technology, and the aircraft’s ability to carry its full component of weapons stores and fuel internally allows F-35 pilots to engage ground targets at longer ranges without being detected and tracked, using precision-guided munitions and air-to-air radar-guided missiles to complete air-to-ground missions. In this “clean” configuration, the F-35 will enter the air battlespace first, clearing the way with air dominance for follow-on legacy coalition forces to operate with relative impunity.
Air-to-air
The F-35’s integrated sensors, information and weapons systems give pilots an advantage over potential threat front-line fighter aircraft. Compared to 5th Generation fighters like the F-35 and F-22, legacy aircraft have a larger radar cross-section (RCS), which means enemy radar can more easily detect them. In aerial combat, legacy aircraft have relatively equal opportunities to detect and engage one another, while a 5th Generation fighter pilot can see enemy aircraft first and take decisive, lethal action from a stand-off distance. The ability to see and not be seen is redefining the previous generation air-to-air tactics.
Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR)
Drawing on the advantage of stealth, advanced sensors, and data fusion providing enhanced pilot situational awareness, F-35 pilots can fly critical ISR missions with more sophisticated data capture than any previous fighter aircraft. The F-35 has the most powerful and comprehensive integrated sensor package of any fighter aircraft in history, giving pilots 360-degree access to “real-time” battlefield information. The information gathered by F-35 sensors can be securely shared with commanders at sea, in the air or on the ground, providing a comprehensive view of ongoing operations.
Much of the F-35’s electronic warfare and ISR capabilities are made possible by a core processor that can perform more than 400 billion operations per second. This core processor collects data from the classified, electronic warfare suite, developed by BAE Systems, to identify enemy radar and electronic warfare emissions and, as happens with the eight sensor Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) providing the pilot 360-degree coverage, recommending which target to attack and whether he or she should use either kinetic or electronic means to counter or negate the threat.
Interoperability
When it comes to having a ‘quarterback’ for the coalition joint strike force, the inter-operable F-35 is the aircraft for the leadership role. The F-35 is designed to share everything it can see with other aircraft and operation centers to expand situational awareness across the entire network of aircraft. F-35s can support legacy aircraft, as well as other F-35s, to achieve mission success and survivability using a combination of stealth, electronic attack, information sharing, and other measures.
Full Mission Systems Coverage
The term “mission systems” refers to the avionics, integrated electronic sensors, displays and communications systems that collect and share data with the pilot and other friendly aircraft, at sea and on the ground. The F-35 has the most robust communications suite of any fighter aircraft built, to date. Components include the AESA radar, EOTS targeting system, Distributed Aperture System (DAS), Helmet Mounted Display (HMD), and the Communications, Navigation and Identification (CNI) Avionics.
Stealth
The stealth capabilities in the F-35 are unprecedented in military aviation. An integrated airframe design, advanced materials and other features maximise the F-35’s stealth features. Extensive analysis and flight test of the survivability of the F-35 with its combination of stealth, advanced sensors, data fusion, sophisticated countermeasures, and electronic attack demonstrate its superior advantages conclusively over legacy aircraft.
The F-35’s stealth capabilities are unprecedented in tactical fighter aviation. An integrated airframe design, advanced materials and other features make the F-35 virtually undetectable to enemy radar. Extensive analysis and flight test of the survivability of the F-35 with its combination of stealth, advanced sensors, data fusion, sophisticated countermeasures, and electronic attack demonstrate its superior advantages conclusively over legacy aircraft.

F-35 Variants
US Air Force – F-35A
This is the technologically simplest version of the JSF, in that it does not require hover or aircraft carrier capability. Therefore it does not require the vertical thrust or the handling qualities for catapult launches, augmented control authority at landing approach speeds and strengthened structure to handle arrested landings.
Marine Corp – F-35B
The distinguishing feature of the USMC version of the JSF is its short takeoff/vertical landing capability (STOVL). There will not be an internally mounted machine gun, but an external gun can be fitted. This version requires controllability on all axes while hovering. Another critical design feature is its impact on the ground surface beneath it during hover.
US Navy – F-35C
The requirement for carrier operations creates the most significant differences between the Air Force and Navy version. The naval version has larger wing and tail control surfaces to enable low-speed approaches to aircraft carriers. Leading-edge flaps and foldable wing tip sections account for this increased wing area. The larger wing area also provides the Navy version with an increased payload capability. To support the stresses of carrier landings and catapult launches, the internal structure of this version is strengthened. Also, the landing gear has a longer stroke and higher load capacity, and of course, an arresting hook is added.

Stolen Sun
How could something so fair Be so cruel When this black sun revolved Around you
Death Cab For Cutie - "Black Sun"
Speedpaint that took longer than it should have. The song played again on my shuffle and I simply love it. The lyrics of it is dark, but leaves room for multiple interpretations.
A couple of days ago, I wrote a short story with this song in mind. Listening again to the song, I wanted to draw a part out of it. The shorty is basically about how someone is hurt after a painful goodbye and grows to be bitter, taking away the most precious of the other person.
In this case, the person is hurt bij Apollo, God of the Sun. She steals the gold in his sun and leaves a black sun behind.
You could argue the deeper meaning behind it, is that this is what it feels like when you give your best to someone and they take it, but leave you with nothing but hurt feelings behind.
Please click here for the full version: https://orig00.deviantart.net/a31f/f/2017/316/f/2/stolen_sun_by_boutzzz-dbtjw7s.png
“Je hebt Zon van Apollo gestolen. Het goud in je haren gedrapeerd en het louter zwart teruggegeven. Hoe kan iets zo honingzoet zo wreed zijn? Je geeft Chaos, hult de Wereld in duister en kijkt toe hoe zij zichzelf kapot maakt.
Geef de Wereld haar licht terug. Je hebt er nooit aan mogen zitten. Dit goud behoort niet aan jou toe. Blijf eraf.

Why the Indian Air Force Should Not Rush Into Stealth
India must buy greater numbers of cheaper, non-stealthy planes until such time Indian industry is able to master stealth technology.
If there’s one area in which China has acquired a massive lead over India it is in the development of stealth fighters. While India’s Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) venture with Russia is far from being combat ready, China claimed in March that its Chengdu J-20 had entered service with the Peoples Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). It tallies with an assessment by the US Defence Department that the J-20 could be inducted in 2018. The Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington DC-based security think tank, concurs the J-20 could enter service in a similar time frame.
China’s stealth programme is unique because it is the only country that has two concurrent programmes. Alongside the J-20, a stripped-down export version, the Shengyang J-31, is also in the final stage of development. Its first customer could well be Pakistan, which is Beijing’s test market.
A scenario in which the Chinese are armed with stealth fighters may look alarming in the backdrop of worsening India-China relations. However, the thing to note is that the initial batches of the J-20 and J-31 are still experimental and years away from being fully battle ready. At best they are at the initial operational capability (IOC) phase. (IOC is the state achieved when a capability is available in its minimum usefully available form.)
A peculiar aspect of the Chinese defence industry is its achievements tend to multiply in March because it coincides with the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress in Beijing. The meeting is often used by the Chinese defence industry as a platform for advertising its military and technological achievements before party bosses.
The available information on the two programmes is both the Chinese stealth fighter concepts remain works in progress. The reality is that only small numbers of the aircraft have been produced to date. These aircraft are therefore technology demonstrators and it could take years before the Chinese military leadership has the confidence to use them against rival air forces.
In this backdrop, there is no need for India to press the panic button although it is imperative that work on the indigenous stealth programme is speeded up. The country should not end up in a wasteful arms race but instead learn from the experiences of the US, Russia, China, Japan and South Korea in developing stealth aircraft as well as anti-stealth missiles and radars.
A short history of stealth
A quick recap of aerial stealth warfare will help illustrate the problems and pitfalls that await countries that deploy stealth technology.
In the 1980s the US built the F-117 Nighthawk that was supposed to be invisible to radar. It was such a closely guarded secret that the F-117 was only flown at night. First used in the 1991 Iraq War, it was an extremely trouble prone aircraft that also lacked the capability to dominate the air. It was quietly retired after a Serbian air defence team used brilliant tactics to identify, isolate and shoot down an F-117 raider over the former Yugoslavia. The weapon used was a Russian made S-125 missile manufactured in the 1960s. The US Air Force (USAF) has kept the first stealth jet’s combat abilities and records classified.
It was the Russians who first conceived the concept of stealth aircraft, but despite their huge achievements in weapons during the Cold War, they never ventured into stealth aircraft. Perhaps they knew stealth wasn’t an invisibility cloak – which the US military has led the world to believe.
In recent years, several American aerospace engineers such as Pierre Sprey have exposed stealth technology as a lie. They say no aircraft can ever be 100 percent stealthy because there is no such thing as one radar in war. “There are lots of radars,” Sprey said in an interview to Dutch television. “And you can’t be nose-on or dead-level to every radar in the theatre. There are always going to be radars that are going to be shining up (from below) or looking from above – they can all see you.”
The Russians went ahead and quietly built a range of VHF radars and surface to air missiles that can detect and bring down stealth fighters.
The Russian strategy of counter stealth measures seems to be winding up the US defence establishment. According to a former US Air Force pilot who flew the latest F-35 stealth jet, just because Russian VHF radars can detect the F-35 doesn't mean they can also target and bring it down. Anti-aircraft defences comprise several links – command, control, communication, ground radar, missiles and airborne radar – in a long “kill chain”. The F-35 will seek to snap one of these links, and thereby disrupt the detection ability.
Meanwhile, Russia and China are upping the ante and building a new generation of anti-aircraft missiles that can be fired from an extremely long range. These new radars can detect stealth aircraft in much better resolution as well. This will seek to nullify the biggest advantage of the American stealth fighters – the ability to detect enemy aircraft from extremely long ranges.
Limitations of stealth aircraft
That the situation in the stealth world wasn’t on cruise control was evident when it was revealed in 2014 that the US Navy planned to buy 22 additional EA-18G Growler electronic warfare (EW) aircraft for $2.14 billion.
The US Navy uses the Growler EW aircraft kitted out with advanced radar jamming equipment to protect its fleet of F/A-18 aircraft during missions. Now, the F-35 is fitted with its own EW capabilities and its supporters say a separate jamming aircraft is not needed because of this technology. But according to others in the US Navy and industry, the F-35's stealth and EW capabilities are simply not enough.
It is a tacit admission that the US Navy is not entirely comfortable with the F-35's capabilities in anti-access/area denial environments.
The purchase of more Growlers is seen as the US Navy's "escape hatch" from the unpopular F-35 programme, which has historically received a lukewarm reception from some sections of the service.
The Russian experience has been similar. After promising to buy hundreds of Sukhoi stealth fighters, recently named as the Su-57, and accepting hundreds of millions of developmental dollars from India, Russia has decided to scale back its plans. Instead of a largely stealthy fleet, the Russian Air Force will rely more on 4+ generation aircraft such as the Su-35 Super Flanker – also known as the stealth killer. Russia will build only a handful of Su-57s while continuing work on the aircraft.
Meanwhile, in China despite the manufacturers’ claims, the PLAAF last year acquired 24 advanced Super Flankers from Russia. This is a tacit admission that the Chinese military is not confident about the capabilities of its stealth jets. Despite the Chinese showing off their stealth jets, the doggedness with which they have pursued the Su-35 and begged and cajoled the Russians to sell them the Super Flanker points to serious shortcomings in their twin programmes. Since both the J-20 and J-31 are based on designs stolen from the US, the flaws in the Americans designs (such as lack of aerodynamic shape, poor manoeuvrability, short range and oxygen supply failures) may have penetrated into the Chinese jets as well.
Lessons for India
With the Su-57 experiencing developmental bottlenecks, there isn’t much India can do other than to push the Russians harder. If the project goes ahead, the IAF should insist on getting stealth aircraft that have protection from new generation anti-stealth missiles. If the Russians don't provide what the IAF wants, India should go in for a limited number of Su-57s and acquire the technology for use in its own fifth generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.
With the benefit of hindsight, India should ensure the AMCA does not travel the same trajectory as current stealth programmes. Instead of packing everything into one aircraft (as the Americans did in the F-35), India should go for 'honest' aircraft with robust offensive and defensive capabilities, without too many bells and whistles.
While the AMCA’s stealth aspects will allow it to plunge straight into battle without worrying about enemy air defences, the Aeronautical Design Agency’s decision to pick a design layout similar to the F-22 severely underestimates the amount of equipment required to carry out true 5th-generation warfare, say Abhijit Iyer-Mitra and Pushan Das in a report prepared for the Observer Research Foundation.
According to the report, while stealth is just one aspect of a 5th-generation fighter, “the most critical aspects are in fact sensor fusion, man-machine interface and the integration of the aircraft with other land, sea and air forces, and as part of a broader fleet of aircraft comprising a totality of air power. An elaboration of these aspects has been notably absent from the design phases”.
If the AMCA becomes mired in the quicksand of compromise, it could turn out to be India’s F-35. The American jet’s stealth has been significantly compromised, prompting several commentators to reclassify the fighter from very low observable (VLO) to merely the low observable (LO) category.
Failure is not an option for India. With 3300 combat jets in various branches of its military, the US can fall back on older fourth generation aircraft to finish the job. Deep pockets (a defence budget of over $500 billion) and a large industrial base allow America to go back to the drawing board and undo its mistakes or produce a new fighter. Even when it flies inferior fighters, no country in the world will dare attack the US.
India with a $57 billion defence budget and less than 800 combat jets can’t afford to produce a dud FGFA. A wise general once said: “A mistake in strategy cannot be undone in the same war.” With the Chinese and Pakistanis increasingly envious of rising India, a war could be thrust upon us in the near future. India simply cannot let its guard down.
Options for the IAF
The IAF must continue to invest in 4+ generation aircraft such as the Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Rafale as these will be the air dominance fighters that will kick in the door and allow secondary fighters such as the Mirage-2000, MiG-29s, MiG-21 and even the rookie Tejas to enter the battlefield. The US, Russia and China are all buying 4+ generation aircraft or upgrading existing ones to the 4++ generation standard. The American F-15 and the Russian MiG-31 are likely to keep flying well into the 2040s and beyond.
Stealth fighters are not only hard to build but it is a fact that air forces have oversold them to the public. In view of the growing pains being experienced by the industry, the fail safe option or Plan B is to buy greater numbers of cheaper, non-stealthy planes. As the Russians used to say in World War II, quantity is quality.
The huge expense of developing, buying and maintaining stealth jets means they will – at least in the next couple of decades – be used sparingly, perhaps at night and escorted by plenty of non-stealth aircraft. This scenario has completely upended predictions that stealth fighters would play a dominant role in air combat by the early part of the 21st century.
There is no need for India to rush into buying stealth aircraft when the world’s leading powers have chosen the sensible way of falling back on 4th generation jets.

-> There is some small comfort of familiarity in this wildly unfamiliar place: even if it was not how he appeared to others in the party, seeing Vlos' tall demonic shape reminds them that they have not wandered in here alone, and more importantly that they have not been lost. It can feel that way in the swarm of the crowd--- the overstimulating dissonance of the strings playing their nerves with a horsehair bow, the sweat-salt anxiety of if they are being looked at too much and it is all too much, even a single pair of eyes. Their fingers ( calloused from years fighting to survive alone, from digging rocks out of the cold earth and breaking ground ) curl tighter around his hands and their teeth sink into the corner of their bottom lip as they squeeze their eyes shut tight. ( an illusion. yes, it's an illusion, it has to be. the dead are not waltzing for a party---but for a moment they wish so so sincerely that they were. )
"---Why is it lying to me?"
-> They open their eyes just enough to see him leaned closer, the slight sway in his tail that doesn't draw anyone else's stares, how he tenses ever so slightly when he looks out at the crowd and then relaxes when he looks back to them. The wet tears rimming their eyes threaten to fall and smudge the makeup that was applied for them by the magic of this place, and they know they'd feel an awful shame and headache for crying on the dancefloor, but his gentle body language soothes some of their anxieties: this is a mutual comfort. They are not alone in wanting to turn their eyes away, and it is why he stands between them and the fake boy. They cannot be fooled if they do not look and become pulled into it. ( but they feel their lip wobble. there is a fresh, raw grief in them---this is an illusion, and so nothing can be happy. they have still ruined everything. they have still destroyed their own life with one mistake. )
"It... it was only a moment but it really looked like him... like there wasn't any difference between us at all again... like he'd aged."
The incubi only enjoys fae parties for the more lighthearted pranks, but the moment the dance floor started tempting him with the warped faces he had stolen over the years he lost most of his interest in actually dancing. However, a familiar aura is clocked on the demons radar and he wanders towards them.
His gaze rests upon Lyric, orange eyes softening in gaze as he reaches out to take their hands. Familiar to the fear he senses off of them, he crouches down a little and does his best to step in front of Lyric's gaze.
Their question makes him sigh, eyes flicking to the ground, then back up to Lyric's face. "You'd be right Lyric, he's not there. It's an illusion that preys upon your mind." the demon's tail slows to a stop behind him, only visible to Lyric. While dressing up as a fae-esque character, Lyric is always gifted the ability to see through his disguises just for their comfort.
"Focus on me Lyric, it's okay. I'm here. The illusion is lying to you." He leans in closer, voice so gentle and soft. It's not as if he isn't bothered by what he sees, it's more that Lyric is comforting to him. Seeing someone he trusts enough to be Vlos, to be himself, is the relief he needed.

Here are the drafts of the main characters in Painted Lady. I wasn't happy with any of Marinette's designs. Chat and Beetle I didn't mind but wanted to do more with.
Before I get into more detail about each design, I'm currently writing the Painted Lady. I'm working on Episode 1 Chapter 1.
More info about the designs under the cut.
Painted Lady-
I didn't hate PL design but I thought it could be better. I wanted PL to look formal and showy but I don't think I really stuck the landing on the second try.
Because I threw out the bodysuit-required logic of the show I really had fun.
I kept the colors from the original and changed them around. PL mask is a butterfly folded in half. When she's using the akuma or in her case Tennin. (Angel) From what I learned akuma is devil or demon.
Because PL isn't evil, her lunar moths power up people into heroes with miraculous-like powers. And permanently powers up actual miraculous users.
When PL uses her powers she stays near the battle but never enters the battle as PL she'll enter as CloverBee or Espirt Vixen instead.
Crimson Beetle-
I really did like Crimson's design but once again no more bodysuit really helped. They'll get the jacket back after they lose the mask.
I wanted Crimson to look as far as Ladybug as I could while keeping the Ladybug theme. I also needed them to look vaguely evil, so that Chat's and Plagg dislike towards them makes more sense.
Crimson can see with the mask on, because of miraculous magic. But once they lose the mask they'll have dark red spots spread from their eyes to give the feel of a mask but not have one.
Chat Noir-
Chat Noir my son. I'm not giving my opinion on the show but geez. It is going far too hard on him and Marinette.
Chat has 2 versions of his outfit.
The first outfit has chains wrapping around Chat. Because the outfit is based on what the users wants. I imagine that Chat wanted to express that he feels trapped because the chains have no start or stop point feel like he has no way out.
If this suit was in the show, a lot of akumas would use the chains to cause harm to Chat.
However, after a plot point, Chat will be freed from his abuse. He'll break the chains and the gold will turn into Kintsugi. I didn't want to change his whole look for his second outfit, because being Chat has become a source of comfort. All he wanted was for the chains to be gone.
The green does glow in the dark.
CloverBee-
CloverBee is used after Marinette uses Vixen to pretend to be Ladybug to announce her retirement.
Marinette really wanted to make Clover look as far from both Ladybug and Marinette as possible.
However each of Marinette's forms has the same basic shape.
Which is shorts and long sleeves.
Clover is a mix of athletic and cute-ish styles. Clover's mask is supposed to look like a pair of goggles or sunglasses depending on how you look at it.
Clover does have real wings. She does fly with those wings.
The puffs of fluff? Still hold pollen that can heal or harm depending on what Clover wants done.
Clover is Marinette's 2'nd most used miraculous only behind Painted Lady.
Espirt Vixen-
The only thing I really didn't on Vixen was the pants and shoes but change is change.
Vixen is supposed to be fashionable. Marinette didn't try to change her appearance much for Vixen, because Vixen is mostly stealth.
Vixen didn't have good color distribution being a mostly black color scheme. I gave Vixen 3 major points of black her hair, skirt, and shoes. The rest is a mix of orange and yellowish-orange.
I'm working on the story. When each of these characters is introduced to the story I'll make a high res version of the clothing.

Here are the PL Miraculous redesign. Some info under the cut. I'll go into more detail about the miraculous in a difference post.
Nino / ConShire
Horse Miraculous, I chose to give Nino the horse because in PL Nino feels like he failed Marinette as a friend and Ladybug for failing to protect the miraculous that Ayla and Chloe "lost" during the battle against The Beholder. He wishes he could just be there for his friends.
Color pallets, The Canon horse Miraculous design is... Something. People had explained why it's bad. I won't explain it but to avoid something similar I shake up the color design. Pegasus's design is a lot of dark browns stacked on top of each other. I make ConShire's pallet of richer browns and gave him a silver accent color. His design is a mix of horse jockey and music conducted.
His name is a mix between Conductor and the shire horse.
Kagami/ Ouro-Hydra
Snake/ Dragon miraculous, Kagami is a good fit for the dragon. I can't deny that. As for the snake, Kagami is a perfectionist so she would be good at resetting to find the perfect outcome.
Color Pallet, This was the worst. The design was easy coloring was hard. Trying to mix red and green was a bitch, even now I'm not too happy but can't find a better alternative. Her design is a mix of just armor and her original design. Her horn changed shape and places and gone with the mask and in with the scales.
Ouro-Hydra name is a mix between Ouroboros and Hydra. Both unending mystical creatures.
Marc/ PoetiKit
First things first his first design was ass.
Fox Miraculous, Marc is artistic. His imagination would be perfect to craft illusions. We don't know much about Marc in Canon, but I do imagine that's he's pretty shy and insecure. In the Painted Lady the reason he was akunatized was because Lila trick Nathaniel into believing that Marc plagiarized her and Nathaniel torn his writing. Liliavalso outed Marc as having a crush on Nathaniel, because of this Marc was homeschooled. This was a rare case where Lila did get in trouble. Marinette reached out to Marc and the bonded over being bullied over Lila (Marinette didn't share everything) and bring LGBTQ+.
Color Pallet, His first design was ASS! Once again not much is known about Marc, I had too much freedom. His outfit is a mix of his normal ware and clothes that I think of when I hear rave, but PG. I wanted him to have a cool but simple design.
His name is a mix between Poetic and Kit fix.
Luka/ Turtle
Turtle Miraculous, LUKA IS A PROTECTOR! This dude has taken akumas for people! He is the best!!!!! Luka is a natural fit for the turtle. Protective, a natural leader, and strategic the perfect combo! In the Painted Lady Luka is everyone's big brother/ Nino boyfriend. He lets Adrien live with him after he runs away. (He moves out of the house bout after Kitty Selection kicks Marinette out and hires Lila with out telling him.)
Color Pallet, pirate mixed with Rockstar. I love his design whole heart. I really tried to make it look nothing like either Turtle design as well as Luka's normal design. I also threw the fuck it bucket out and said anything can be a design. I was bored of body suits. My only thing is I hate the color green so. I tried to keep the color simple, I think I didva good job.
His name is a mix of Turtle Shell and Rockstar.

Back story for Tikki and Plagg in the Painted Lady AU. Please note that in this AU the order and Master Fu are not painted in positive lights. Tikki and Plagg are not human, they have never been human so their forms are not going to be perfectly human as I drew them before.
Tikki and Plagg are the only Kwami that can create a physical "human" form. The Inner Kwami (Nooroo, Pollen, Wayzz, Trixx, and Duusu) can only create a form if they share a mindscape with Tikki or Plagg.
Tikki and Plagg can possess their users whenever they please, they try not to as they both have lost users before because of this but will use it if deemed necessary. The inner Kwami can only possess in life or death cases to save the user. The outer Kwami (the zodiac Kwami.) can not possess the user at all and can only slightly influence the user.
Old designs on the bottom, no longer canon.
Story below.
T.W for ‘Body Horror, Abusive-ish language’
Tikki and Plagg. Life and death. Creation and Destruction. Pure and Corrupt. Good and Evil. This was the Order's main way of thinking.
Tikki is the firstborn of the Kwami, the “Mother” if you will. Plagg the second born, only by mere seconds. Tho Tikki is the mother, Plagg was not considered the father. The Order saw him as the embodiment of evil, and for the first dozen decades of the order treated him a such.
The order locked him away, hundreds of yards below the surface. The only ones allowed to visit the “evil” Kwami were Tikki or the Turtle user. Plagg was eons of years old and never thought that he would be fazed by this. But being trapped unable to leave, to move, to speak, to be alive. He started to grow mad. In the mindscape that he was trapped in, he screams and curses those who trapped him. Vowing that humans would suffer.
Tikki on the other hand was revered as a God. No as THE God. She was put on a pedestal, never to be let down. Tikki was not allowed to be used, not even in the worse case. She was never to be alone, never to visit Plagg without the Turtle user. Never allowed to feel sad, angry, negative. In fear that the order would fall. Tikki began to believe that they were right, why would she, god of creation benefit from being upset. Her time on this earth is long and she shouldn’t waste it on such negative emotions.
Tikki learned during this time that she could create a “human” form. So she does… But it isn’t was the order expected. Tikki was tall, taller than any known human in history, she had no hair, a dozen eyes covering her head, rows of sharp teeth. She had a chest of a male, a lower body of a deer, and the back legs of a tiger, she had 4 arms each with talons. Her body was red in color and had dark red almost black spots covering it, a white hole was in her throat and went down into the start of her chest.
To Tikki this was perfection. Each aspect was perfect for survival, to Tikki this was beauty. The order thought otherwise. They forced her down and removed what they thought was “unpure”. Tikki lost her arms, her talon, teeth, back legs, many of her eyes. Tikki's form was so damaged she retreated back into the miraculous unable to heal. Tikki sat feeling pain for the first time since… Tikki doesn’t even know how long.
During Tikki's retreat, the order decided that since Tikki was “tainted” that they would humor the forgotten Kwami. For the first time in 120 years, Plagg was allowed freedom. As soon as Plagg reach the surface he started to destroy everything in his path. People, buildings, even his fellow Kwami were torn down in his wrath. He didn’t stop until he reaches the camber that Tikki was put in.
Plagg was disgusted by the camber. The room rank of decay, pain, grief, loss. Plagg never felt such disgust with anything before. If even he was repelled by such a room, how could those creatures stand it?
In the center of the room stood a pedestal, on top of the pillar, laid a miraculous box. The odor originated from that kwami. Plagg approached the box with full intention to destroy the source.
Right before his paw touched the box a small voice called out to him. One that he barely recognized. Slowly he opened the box, only to see a pair of earrings cracked beyond recognition. To everyone but himself.
Before Plagg could even begin comprehending what was happening the current leader of the Order, turtle user appeared. That creature also smelt like decay. Plagg knew that monster had hurt Tikki. Plagg body started to grow and change.
Before the Order leader. Plagg grew even taller than Tikki, his hand lacked a finger but made up for it, he had dagger-like fingers, his face had 2 glowing eyes, each eye had multiple cat-like pupils. His face had multiply mouths, each with rows of sharp teeth jutting out of them. Plaggs look as close to a human as he could, he wanted the order to see that the evilest, vile, cruel creature was just like them.
What happened that day was never passed down in the Order's history. It was a dark day, many lives were lost. With the joint powers of the inner Kwami, Tikki was healed. Tikki swore to never present in that form again. Plagg used that form as a constant reminder that the Order is no purer than he.
Over time the physical pain faded, but the mental scars never did. The “teaching” that the Order forced into Tikki stayed with her. Sadly Tikki also inadvertently forced these views onto each of her bugs.
Marinette received the worse of this. Tikki never understood depression, Tikki didn’t notice that Marinette was not as emotionally, or mentally as strong as she thought.
Marinette was bullied from the young age of 8 up till her akumatization on her 16th birthday. Marinette was insecure with everything she did. The stress Marinette was under never left even for a moment. With Tikki constantly reinforcing that Marinette had to be perfect to be Ladybug, to even be Marinette, she shattered.
By throwing Tikki away and allowing herself to be akumatized Tikki finally saw that Marinette was grieving the same way Tikki did centuries ago in the order.
Tikki made a new vowed that she would find the new Ladybug and never let them hurt the way that she let Marinette hurt.
Plagg had cooled off over the decades. When he was given Adrien he saw another captured soul. He felt a kinship with Adrien. Though he would never tell.
He let the boy get away with a lot, even encouraged the behavior. He could never have known that while he almost forced the boy to have freedom, that Tikki was forcing Marinette to have none. He doesn’t blame Tikki, he doesn’t even blame Marinette.
The blame went to Adrien, but more importantly himself. When he saw Marinette akuma he didn’t know if Tikki was a part of it or not. He pulled Adrien into the mindscape he had created many years ago. He let Adrien see his “monstrous” form, he let Adrien see the horrors that he committed. When Adrien seemly snapped Plagg had taken control.
He hated so many people again, and his rage would not be quenched until blood ran through the street.
