Lance McClain is a good kid. Really, he is! His mom always told him that he was a good person with a kind heart, and that was the end of the story.

Being expelled from six schools in six years was just… well, a casualty of circumstances. Now, though, he was really going to try with The Galaxy Garrison Private Academy, even if they took boring field trips to look at Greek art from three millennia ago.

The halls of the museum echoed with footsteps and murmuring around Lance, light streaming in and highlighting old marble artworks. He frowned up at a carving of a furry humanoid with big ears. It looked more like a cat person than a monster, but he dutifully marked it down on his scavenger hunt paper.

Suddenly, he felt something hit the back of his head, followed by giggles from somewhere behind him. He turned around to see a little paper airplane, which made him annoyed and thankful all at once. Annoyed, because who the hell was throwing stuff at him, but thankful that it wasn’t a real airplane. Yee-owch. Lance had just heard a news broadcast that day about a freak plane accident somewhere off the coast of New York. He briefly recalled mentions of a thunderstorm.

Anyways, in typical Lance fashion, he found out that the paper plane belonged to Nancy Bobofit and proceeded to flay her (verbally of course. It’s not like he’s some sort of crazy weapon-toting sixth grader).

After five minutes of arguing over whose curls were greasier, Hunk finally found Lance and dragged him away.

“You gotta stop doing that, dude,” Hunk bemoaned. “You’re going to get expelled again. Or get both of us kicked out.” A pang went through Lance at that— he didn’t want to risk hurting his mom, Maria, and getting another expulsion would at least disappoint her. She was an angel on Earth who deserved better than another stressful phone call.

With a reluctant sigh, Lance continued their scavenger hunt with his best buddy Hunk at his side.

The rest of the day? Chaos.

Lance didn’t know what happened. One second, Nancy was picking on Hunk at lunchtime. The next, she was facedown in a water fountain, even though Lance could have sworn he didn’t touch a greasy curl on her stupid head.

His math teacher, Mr. Iverson, brought him aside to the museum rooms for a lecture before promptly turning into a fucking bat lady. He then started attacking Lance, which was irresponsible for an educator in his humble opinion. If it hadn’t been for a beautiful girl with white hair, Lance would probably have died. She appeared out of nowhere and threw him a pen as he scrambled behind columns to avoid Iverson's talons.

Lance snatched the pen out of the air with reflexes that surprised him.

"Are you crazy?" he yelled at the girl, pointing to the pen.

"Open the pen!" she yelled back.

Well, fuck it. He uncapped the pen and watched in shock as it morphed into a sword.

Lance wouldn’t have put slaying a bat lady on his bucket list for a field trip. This time, it isn't his fault when the school calls home and expels him. Guilt claws its way up his throat despite his "innocence." When he and Hunk make their way back into New York City, he loses Hunk somewhere along the route, too ashamed and frustrated with himself to share in it with his best friend.

His mother instantly envelopes Lance in a hug he doesn't deserve. Lance lets all his weight fall into her comforting arms.

"Oh, sweetie," she murmurs. "It's gonna be okay."

Maria packs their things soon after comforting him and wiping his tears. She tells him that they're going to Montauk, sneaking out before Lance's horrible stepfather gets home from work. They take his car, so he makes sure to kick his feet up from the dash and ignore his mother's clucks of disapproval.

When they get to their little beach cottage, instant relief crashes over Lance. He's always loved the ocean: the calm of the surf crashing relentlessly, the smell of salt dancing among swift winds, the feeling of sand beneath his feet. It always melts away his worries and fears, and he knows it does for his mom, too. Her eyes always soften as she stares into the distant horizon.

After they get back to their cottage, Lance finds out why. His mom seats him at the breakfast nook and grabs his hands in hers, her thumb making circles across his knuckles.

"Hijo, I have something to explain. It's important, so listen closely."

So Lance listens. He just hadn’t expected that his mom would reveal the existence of the gods. And that he was a demigod. And that his life was in danger. Oh, did he forget to mention that “best buddy Hunk” was also half-goat?

Yeah, his mom didn't tell him that. Hunk did, appearing in the beach house doorway with wild eyes and urgency and goat legs. His best friend demanded that they leave in a shaky voice, pointing to some unknown force that was after Lance.

Fuck everything, honestly. He might only be 12, but this was a situation that called for some adult language.

The remainder of the night happened so fast, it was almost like some sort of sick nightmare. Lance remembered piling into his stepdad’s car in the pouring rain, running into the fucking Minotaur, and being told by his mom to escape to some camp.

He also remembered… the rain soaking his clothes, dragging him down as his mother stood up to protect him. Lance was forced to watch, a beat too late, as the Minotaur gripped his mother and crushed her in his fist, her silhouette disappearing into a shimmer of golden light. Is she... Anger surged through Lance, propelling him forward to grab the Minotaur’s horn in his hands and stab it in the head.

Everything in his head went silent. The pain dulled, light blacked out, and cold washed away.

And then… he was in bed, blinking awake to see dark eyes hovering over him with a scowl on their owner.

“You drool when you sleep.”

Lance was too delirious to say anything clever.

“You have a mullet.”

The rest was history.

Revisited my old vld au (i blame @jankwritten) and remade my old character sheets about it. tweaked some things, struggled to remember what the hell all my notes were about from like 5 years ago, etc etc. Much happier with the set-up now honestly.

Stars vs circles indicate designated paladin/main pilot of that lion. Or castle in the castle's case.

Probably Take Me to the Poppy Field. It's pre-canon ManaCross, so ofc it's angsty, and I do love myself some good ManaCross angst

Easily One of Heart, One of Mind. It's a Yulma wedding fic and I shoved all the fluff and happy feels into it as possible

Uhhhhh let's see. Encompassing Lust contains sexual content but I wouldn't go as far as to call it smut. I'd like to write a proper smut fic one day but I'd have to be in the proper mood for it, if you get my gist

wild (like young volcanoes) would be considered a crossover by some, but it's really just an au, a Percy Jackson au

That's a very good question that I have no good answer to. I guess I'm pretty good when it comes to descriptions. And metaphors. I love myself a good metaphor, so when I have the opportunity to add one, I will

I'd be here all day if I listed off every one of my writing weaknesses lmao. But if I did have to narrow it down, it'd definitely have to be my perfectionism and chronic revisionism. I can't stand it when a word or sentence structure doesn't sit right with my mind. I'll just stare at it for minutes and if I can't find a solution, I'll just straight up nuke the entire doc because everything else starts to look wrong in my mind. My beta readers can attest to this

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

*traumatic flashbacks of all the VLD fics that had Lance speaking bad Spanish/Spanglish*

I don't think writing dialogue in a different language is bad at all, it's just very obvious when the author is 1) a non-native speaker and 2) uses Google translate. Don't be afraid to reach out to friends who speak the language you're trying to write!

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Officially published? Berserk. But first ever? That would be Percy Jackson. It's a stapled five-page, handwritten reader insert fic and I still have it in my room, under my bed.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

Oh hands down it's One of Heart, One of Mind. Yulma is a ship that means so much to me and it quite literally defined the way that I viewed queer ships in media. It took me forever to write this fic but that was because I wanted to do them justice.

YOU WRITE SO GODLY (no pun intended) WHERE IS PART 2??.

Keith, as a son of Ares, always felt conflicted. When he, Shiro, and Matt first ran through Camp Half-Blood's borders, he was devastated as he watched Shiro turn into a fucking pine tree. Here was his adoptive brother, the only role model he’d ever had, and Shiro's all-powerful father could only "save" his life by turning him into a plant. He deserved better.

It made Keith a spiteful camper for the first few weeks he stayed in the Hermes cabin. So spiteful, in fact, that he took out five Apollo kids in the first half hour of capture the flag. As he stood there in that godsdamned forest and panted over the groaning forms of his fellow campers, a fiery boar appeared above his head.

Matt congratulated him, while Ares cabin immediately staked their claim with aggressive back thumps. Matt had already been claimed the day after they’d entered camp as a son of Athena.

“War bros!” Matt cheered, forcibly fist bumping Keith, who wasn’t nearly as excited about that association.

Despite all the distractions that camp had to offer, Keith could never truly leave behind that orphanage he and Shiro had grown up in. He couldn’t forget the firm, guiding hand on his shoulder or the warm grey eyes that crackled uniquely in certain lights when he did something good. Shiro had made him want to be a better person, even after all the hardships they'd endured.

Keith didn’t care about being good anymore, though. He just wanted his brother back. And to do that, he’d need the attention of Zeus himself.

From what Keith heard, that could only be obtained by true heroes who were worthy of the gods’ blessing. Heroes completed quests.

Keith needed a quest.

Allura, however, had other plans. The graceful centaur explained that the oracle informed her of a special demigod who would be chosen to lead Keith’s quest.

Unfortunately, Keith Kogane was known for being a loner at camp. Even his cabinmates discovered that it was practically impossible to work as a team with Keith, who despite being powerful, often charged recklessly into exercises without much care for those around him (or himself).

To say Keith wasn’t thrilled at his quest being dependent on another person was… well, an understatement. It only got worse when he first laid eyes on the gangly, injured demigod who had allegedly defeated a Minotaur before even setting foot in Camp. Keith stared down at the sleeping boy with an expression of pure disdain, unemotional. The boy stirred and blinked his eyes half open.

“You drool when you sleep,” Keith flatly intoned. The boy just smiled, still barely conscious.

“You have a mullet.”

And with that rousing statement, he passed out again and started to snore. Keith wrinkled his nose. If this guy was actually who his hopes were riding on, he was incredibly fucked.

Appa and Momo Screw the Timeline by @keetajet

This is one of many ATLA fics I read this year because the Capitalism gods blessed me with the show on Netflix and we went down the rabbit hole FAST. Its a bit of a time travel fix it but its handled SO well and Zuko gets his redemption arc early and we just stan all of this. Never thought I would enjoy a story revolving around Appa and Momo being traumatized but it really is just *chefs kiss*

Bury A Friend by @rweoutofthewoods

Along with the ATLA rabbit hole I somehow reverted back to Voltron but in a good way, you know? This, however, made me reconsider how life works. Lance continues to be the self-sacrificing idiot we all love but god if I wasn't on the verge of tears the whole time. If you need a good cry and are feeling nostalgic, this is the fic for you.

Flames Beneath the Earth by @ilya-boltagon

Another ATLA fic and through this I discovered the beauty of Lu Ten. In this story Lu Ten never died and instead becomes some sort of mildly wanted vigilante trying to keep his cousin alive while dealing with his fathers secret group of old men. Would gladly give my life for Lu Ten after this ngl.

Kevlar and Bubblewrap (Series) by @hedgiwithapen

Not going to lie, I definitely didn't start this year planning on reading Big Hero Six fanfiction. This was recommended to me however, and we just kept going uphill from there. Tadashi surviving mixed with heaping angst and Aunt Cass being a badass confirmed for me that I can in fact enjoy fanfiction from almost everywhere given good circumstances (and trust me, everything was just wonderful).

Once Upon a Time AU (Series) by Compass Rose

I would give my soul for this story any day any time. Everything just fit in ways I never thought it could but it was done so well??? Took me by surprise and I will stand by this forever, its just wonderful. I want more OUA crossovers done this well. I can't wait to see where this story goes and I'm thrilled to be along for the ride.

Son of Sea Foam (Series) by @caffeinatedflumadiddlebutpjo

Percy Jackson being a son of Aphrodite was not something I ever though could work but goddamit does it here. Its all a ruse, but MAN is it pulled of spectacularly with even better writing that managed to sell me on ships other than percabeth for Percy. That's a feat right there, it changes so much about Percy but still keeps him Percy, you know? 10/10 recommend, this may have come out of a surge of nostalgia like the Voltron ones but its so worth it.

Spider-Man Klance AU (Series) by @iwriteshipsnotsailthem

Another aid towards by nostalgia induced fervor a few months ago that was just such a fun time. A friend recommended this to me and I'm so glad for them doing that because it just hits all the things you love from Spider-Man with Klance thrown in there and Voltron shenanigans and I want more people to scream about it with, come join me.

Where the Water Meets the Sky by @speakswords

Yes its another Voltron fic and yes its the last one but if this Mermaid AU (yes, bear with me) didn't grab me by the heart and make me feel alive then nothing ever really existed, did it? The shift from childhood innocence to life impacting them in the fullest way possible is just so well done and made me really think about how many fics I've overlooked with similar premises that could have been written by gods on earth as we have here.

Zukos Honor by Cursed Loaf

This may have been the very fic to sell me on Zukka as a ship, I genuinely can't remember, but happy Zukko in Ba Sing Se with Iroh and Sokka just being Sokka was just??? Amazing??? And refreshing, I really did turn into a softie for these two after this. Please read it.

This year was really the year of me reading stories from fandoms I never thought I would. I just casually had this thrown at me by a friend and like? I desperately want more Stranger Things fanficiton now. This is one of my more recent reads, and I'm trying to catch up on updates or I would have found more by now. The angst of the series as well as developing on characters that really only got named in cannon was so refreshing and the writings style just made me happy. Ironic, given the track record for the series as a whole.

Thats it for our list this year folks! If you have any stories to recommend to me I'd love to hear it! This is all my opinion at the end of the day but I hope you're able to find a good story from this regardless.

time passes, keith and lance are both still unclaimed

lance starts hanging out with keith a little more now, they both have each other's backs since they came together and are still unclaimed

however lance hangs out more with hunk and keith with a kid from the demeter cabin, pidge and the one zeus dude, shiro

they are all a lil group tho

other campers dont stop using keith to bring lance down but he's managing, he went through this for months before anyway

there's speculation that keith might be a kid of the big three since he's a badass

as for lance? due to his flirtiness everyone passes him aside as an aphrodite kid, or a minor god/goddess

until around 1.5 month after he first arrived at camp they all go for a swim in the lake

keith and lance are getting into a competitive splashing war, they do shit like that they're very competitive with each other

things get a little heated and at some point a big wave crashes at keith

everyone stops what they're doing and stare at them

people start talking all at once, "poseidon" keeps being repeated amongst them and "who did that thats so cool"

everyone immediately assumes it was keith but keith denies it

lance stands still, he couldnt have done that could he?

until there's light above his head

a hologram of green light in the form of a trident appears

everyone is shocked

then everone starts bowing to him

"all hail lance mcclain, son of poseidon"
