Telefónica will sell or recycle 100% of its equipment and will recondition 500,000 mobile phones per year

The Spanish telecom operator Telefónica announced recently the launch of its Circular Economy Plan, which will move on three levels: internal eco-efficiency, suppliers and customers. With the announcement, the telecom company reiterates its commitment to be a Zero Waste company in 2030.

The operator explains that the program will move under the axes of repair, reuse and recycling of 100% of network equipment in 2025, guaranteeing that its waste is not incinerated nor ends up in a landfill, but is transformed into raw materials that are reintroduced into the value chain.

Among other objectives, Telefónica[1] plans to recondition and reuse 90% of the fixed equipment (routers and decoders) collected from customers, in 2024; implement circularity criteria in all purchases of electronic customer equipment in 2025; and introduce eco-design criteria in all new customer equipment under the Telefónica brand, also in 2025.

In addition, Telefónica plans to recondition 500,000 mobile phones per year in 2030 thanks to different programs.

Telefónica explains that, in network matters, it has aligned itself with the GSMA[2], that has reflected in its Strategy Paper for Circular Economy Network Equipment[3] on the challenges of the sector to promote circularity. According to the World Resources Institute[4], more than 100,000 million tons of mineral, biological, metal or fuel resources are consumed each year. This volume exceeds more than the planet can regenerate in a year and only 8.6% is recycled or has a second life.

The operator affirms that the circular economy was born as part of the solution to this problem and is proposed as a different way of understanding the economy, which allows economic growth while respecting the limits of the planet. “Logically, this reality applies to all sectors and, therefore, also to the telecommunications sector and its network equipment, fundamentally due to rapid technological changes and customer behaviour, giving rise to shorter periods of use of the devices, which generates an increase in waste”, says the telecom company.
