I bought a chonky little MP3 player and put all the digital music I currently have on there, which is still well under the 32 GB it can store on the device itself without expandable storage and am listening to it on shuffle now. I have a bunch of CDs I want to rip and put on there and I also need to edit the metadata on the files that are already on there, because almost everything is Unknown Artist and Unknown Album right now, but like. This is nice.

Nothing makes me more viscerally sympathetic to the "corporations decide what products people are going to want regardless of what people actually want" argument than the fact that all phones are giant tablets with no buttons. No one is making anything else, so everyone "has" to want one of those.
Except.
I really did care about this issue, so I looked into the details, and that's exactly backwards. When Motorola killed the Droid line of phones with slide-out keyboards, I went and read an interview with the product director. And he was like "yeah, I loved that feature, I really liked those phones, but we just couldn't get people to buy them."
And similarly, I'm always upset that no one is making reasonable-sized (under five inches) phones any more. But the thing is, when they do make those they can't sell them. For a long time Apple hung on with the mini line, which was the only thing that ever tempted me to do business with Apple. But they're discontinuing it because they just can't sell enough of them to justify keeping that line open—even though they have a total monopoly on the market for "small decent-quality smartphones".
These are both cases where the corporations keep trying to create demand for exactly the products I want. And it doesn't take because people authentically, organically, do not want them.

Touching is Good: A Retrospective
My trusty Nintendo 3DS, which has held out since I was gifted it for my 15th birthday, has turned one decade old with my 25th birthday this past November. Given new life with custom firmware and nds-bootstrap via TWiLightMenu, the 3DS is stellar for visiting any past handheld title or console title up to (and somewhat including) the N64. (Quick plug for the CFW/hacking community for the less popular PS Vita, too, which has accomplished some pretty crazy-cool stuff this last year.) I use my 3DS more often than I use my Nintendo Switch most weeks.
The Nintendo DS (minus the three) launched in late 2004. The second display and stylus support were novel tools for developers to experiment with, and the NDS is best remembered for its robust catalogue of RPGs and visual novels. Where it lacked in power, narrative-focused games flourished under its technical limitations.
That being said, while browsing the ROM archives on Vimm's Lair to pick up some titles, I was reminded of what an interesting era the mid-to-late 2000s were for games. While Sony and Microsoft were fighting over the "core gamer" demographic, who had outgrown Nintendo mascots, Nintendo led a series of wildly successful marketing campaigns for its hardware after the light failure of the Gamecube, where the Nintendo DS and then the Wii were targeted at...everyone else.
Tumblr media
[Image source. Image description in alt text.]
If you look at ads for the DS and the Wii, you'll see that adults are featured much more prominently than children, especially women and seniors. (This did not go unnoticed, as I found this ancient relic of misogyny while looking for images for this post.) A Nintendo handheld was already an easy sell to parents with small children (though I think it's also notable that ads which do focus on children often prominently feature girls. Munchlax is pretty hot...), but Nintendo's angle for the DS and Wii was that their hardware wasn't just for children. The Wii was a way to get up off the couch and to play board games with grandma. The DS was a great gadget for a working woman to keep in her pocketbook.
This worked. The Wii and DS were two of the best-selling consoles of all time. In particular, the DS's marketing campaign only worked because it came out in the perfect window of time. PDA-phone hybrids had been around since the 90s, and the Blackberry had been kicking around for a few years, but the iPhone wouldn't be introduced until 2007, and the 4G LTE standard wouldn't be released until 2009. While the Blackberry was popular with businesspeople and the PDA was out of style, smartphones were luxury toys for several years; they wouldn't become near-ubiquious until the mid-2010s. I didn't get my own smartphone until probably around the same time I got my 3DS, a full handheld generation later.
Browsing the software library for the Nintendo DS and DSi with that in mind is really interesting. Many titles released for the platform serve the same purposes that would be fulfilled by simple smartphone apps less than a decade later: planners and diaries, fitness trackers, calculators, language learning and SAT prep software, even a guide to the then-most-recent version of the driver's test in the UK. These proliferated with the release of the DSi's virtual store, but they existed even with the base model. You could go to a brick-and-mortar store and buy them on physical cartridges. (You might be wondering, "Why would you bother carrying those around over just buying a Blackberry?" You can't underestimate how expensive the service bills for a smartphone were before companies realized they were the most powerful spyware tool in history.)
There was never a time where every single businesswoman in New York carried a DS Lite, but adults did buy and use them, and a not insignificant portion of the DS's software library is aimed at a casual adult audience. Another niche covered mostly by smartphone games these days—games designed to be picked up and played in short sessions on-the-go, in places like waiting rooms and subway commutes.
Nintendo made crazy bank in the seventh console generation. Publications of the time talked about a console war between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, but the real battle was between the PS3 and the Xbox 360 over the gamer demographic. Nintendo was producing hardware for a niche who would quietly disappear once smartphone sales began ballooning by hundreds of millions per year over the course of the early 2010s.
After the failure of the Wii U, Nintendo's marketing strategy pivoted again, though I doubt they'll ever completely abandon their family-friendly image. Currently beat out only by the PS2 and the DS, the Nintendo Switch may very well climb to a status as the best-selling console of all time before the end of its lifespan, but the "gamer" demographic is much bigger than it was two decades ago at the dawn of the DS. As more and more devices become consolidated into the Swiss army knife the smartphone has become, consoles can only carve out a role as dedicated gaming machines.
I'm not sure we'll ever see anything like the Nintendo DS or the Wii again. I think they're worth looking back on for their uniqueness in that way as much as they are for the more celebrated parts of their libraries.

fiddling with scrcpy. It's a tool to interact with android devices remotely, the main application is screen-mirroring to PC but it's also kind of a general-purpose toolkit for accessing weird ADB features. You can even set it up to stream over the network, which is actually how I'm typing this right now.
Most of the things I do on my phone I can do from my PC anyway. I can browse the filesystem with KDE connect, I can use Whatsapp with the browser, I can sync tabs from Firefox, but this also allows me to capture the cameras as v4l devices which is compelling. Your phone has a much better camera than pretty much any webcam you'll find on the market, with a basic smartphone holder you can get pretty much the best webcam you own for free.
Tumblr media
The round-trip wireless latency is kind of too high for accurate mousing. Your feedback loop is completely blown out, to say nothing of the frame inconsistency. I'm sure you can tune it, there's probably a pretty generous framebuffer to avoid dropping frames.

Recently, former president and convicted felon Donald Trump posted a series of photos that appeared to show fans of pop star Taylor Swift supporting his bid for the US presidency. The pictures looked AI-generated, and WIRED was able to confirm they probably were by running them through the nonprofit True Media’s detection tool to confirm that they showed “substantial evidence of manipulation.”
Things aren’t always that easy. The use of generative AI, including for political purposes, has become increasingly common, and WIRED has been tracking its use in elections around the world. But in much of the world outside the US and parts of Europe, detecting AI-generated content is difficult because of biases in the training of systems, leaving journalists and researchers with few resources to address the deluge of disinformation headed their way.
Detecting media generated or manipulated using AI is still a burgeoning field, a response to the sudden explosion of generative AI companies. (AI startups pulled in over $21 billion in investment in 2023 alone.) “There's a lot more easily accessible tools and tech available that actually allows someone to create synthetic media than the ones that are available to actually detect it,” says Sabhanaz Rashid Diya, founder of the Tech Global Institute, a think tank focused on tech policy in the Global South.
Most tools currently on the market can only offer between an 85 and 90 percent confidence rate when it comes to determining whether something was made with AI, according to Sam Gregory, program director of the nonprofit Witness, which helps people use technology to support human rights. But when dealing with content from someplace like Bangladesh or Senegal, where subjects aren’t white or they aren’t speaking English, that confidence level plummets. “As tools were developed, they were prioritized for particular markets,” says Gregory. In the data used to train the models, “they prioritized English language—US-accented English—or faces predominant in the Western world.”
This means that AI models were mostly trained on data from and for Western markets, and therefore can’t really recognize anything that falls outside of those parameters. In some cases that’s because companies were training models using the data that was most easily available on the internet, where English is by far the dominant language. “Most of our data, actually, from [Africa] is in hard copy,” says Richard Ngamita, founder of Thraets, a nonprofit civic tech organization focused on digital threats in Africa and other parts of the Global South. This means that unless that data is digitized, AI models can’t be trained on it.
Without the vast amounts of data needed to train AI models well enough to accurately detect AI-generated or AI-manipulated content, models will often return false positives, flagging real content as AI generated, or false negatives, identifying AI-generated content as real. “If you use any of the off the shelf tools that are for detecting AI-generated text, they tend to detect English that's written by non-native English speakers, and assume that non-native English speaker writing is actually AI,” says Diya. “There’s a lot of false positives because they weren’t trained on certain data.”
But it’s not just that models can’t recognize accents, languages, syntax, or faces less common in Western countries. “A lot of the initial deepfake detection tools were trained on high quality media,” says Gregory. But in much of the world, including Africa, cheap Chinese smartphone brands that offer stripped-down features dominate the market. The photos and videos that these phones are able to produce are much lower quality, further confusing detection models, says Ngamita.
Gregory says that some models are so sensitive that even background noise in a piece of audio, or compressing a video for social media, can result in a false positive or negative. “But those are exactly the circumstances you encounter in the real world, rough and tumble detection,” he says. The free, public-facing tools that most journalists, fact checkers, and civil society members are likely to have access to are also “the ones that are extremely inaccurate, in terms of dealing both with the inequity of who is represented in the training data and of the challenges of dealing with this lower quality material.”
Generative AI is not the only way to create manipulated media. So-called cheapfakes, or media manipulated by adding misleading labels or simply slowing down or editing audio and video, are also very common in the Global South, but can be mistakenly flagged as AI-manipulated by faulty models or untrained researchers.
Diya worries that groups using tools that are more likely to flag content from outside the US and Europe as AI generated could have serious repercussions on a policy level, encouraging legislators to crack down on imaginary problems. “There's a huge risk in terms of inflating those kinds of numbers,” she says. And developing new tools is hardly a matter of pressing a button.
Just like every other form of AI, building, testing, and running a detection model requires access to energy and data centers that are simply not available in much of the world. “If you talk about AI and local solutions here, it's almost impossible without the compute side of things for us to even run any of our models that we are thinking about coming up with,” says Ngamita, who is based in Ghana. Without local alternatives, researchers like Ngamita are left with few options: pay for access to an off the shelf tool like the one offered by Reality Defender, the costs of which can be prohibitive; use inaccurate free tools; or try to get access through an academic institution.
For now, Ngamita says that his team has had to partner with a European university where they can send pieces of content for verification. Ngamita’s team has been compiling a dataset of possible deepfake instances from across the continent, which he says is valuable for academics and researchers who are trying to diversify their models’ datasets.
But sending data to someone else also has its drawbacks. “The lag time is quite significant,” says Diya. “It takes at least a few weeks by the time someone can confidently say that this is AI generated, and by that time, that content, the damage has already been done.”
Gregory says that Witness, which runs its own rapid response detection program, receives a “huge number” of cases. “It’s already challenging to handle those in the time frame that frontline journalists need, and at the volume they’re starting to encounter,” he says.
But Diya says that focusing so much on detection might divert funding and support away from organizations and institutions that make for a more resilient information ecosystem overall. Instead, she says, funding needs to go towards news outlets and civil society organizations that can engender a sense of public trust. “I don't think that's where the money is going,” she says. “I think it is going more into detection.”

Constructed for Rapidity and Effectiveness
A powerful octa-core CPU powers the Dimensity 7300. This combo is ideal for gaming and multitasking with four 2.5 GHz Arm Cortex-A78 cores. Four Arm Cortex-A55 cores, which are energy-efficient, complement these and guarantee dependable performance for daily use. In comparison to the Dimensity 7050, this combination represents a major advancement.
The advanced 4nm manufacturing process is a feature of the 7300 series. This corresponds to a 25% decrease in power usage over the 6nm technique utilised in earlier generations. Users will benefit from longer battery life as a result, while manufacturers can create sleeker devices without compromising functionality.
Superpower in Graphics
Immersive mobile experiences require strong visuals. The Dimensity 7300 has an Arm Mali-G615 GPU to fix this. This graphics processor runs even the most demanding games smoothly, and MediaTek’s HyperEngine technology stabilises the network and efficiently manages resources. MediaTek says the 7300 series is appealing to mobile gamers due to its 20% higher frame rates (FPS) and energy economy.
AI Gains Strength
AI is increasingly changing the smartphone experience, enabling intelligent assistants, better photography, and facial recognition. The Dimensity 7300 uses the MediaTek APU 655, following this trend. This AI processing unit doubles the efficiency of the Dimensity 7050, resulting in a notable performance boost. New mixed precision data types, which enable more effective memory bandwidth utilisation and lower memory requirements for larger AI models, are also supported by the 7300 series. Future smartphones will be able to incorporate even more advanced AI features thanks to this.
Gorgeous Images
For a fascinating mobile experience, a stunning display is essential; a strong processor is only half the story. This demand is met by the Dimensity 7300 series, which supports powerful screens. With the ability to support WFHD+ resolutions at frame rates of up to 120 Hz, these chipsets guarantee fluid and visually spectacular images. For an even smoother user experience, the 7300 series also supports Full HD+ screens at an even higher refresh rate of 144Hz.
Concentrate on Take Pictures
Users now place a greater value on mobile photography, and the Dimensity 7300 series delivers. The chip has MediaTek’s Imagiq 950 image signal processor (ISP), which provides sophisticated photographic features. With the 12-bit HDR pipeline supported by this ISP, detailed information and brilliant colours may be captured. Furthermore, the Imagiq 950 enables features like video HDR, face detection, and precise noise reduction, guaranteeing beautiful images and movies in a range of lighting scenarios. The 7300 series stands out for its ability to enable dual simultaneous video capture, which allows for the development of more imaginative content.
A Set of Chips for Foldables
A 7300 variation called the Dimensity 7300X goes one step farther by being designed with foldable cellphones in mind. One essential component of these cutting-edge gadgets is dual display compatibility, which this chipset provides. Manufacturers may design foldable phones with seamless experiences on both the cover and main displays thanks to the 7300X.

The internet is a network of online connected servers, desktop computers, laptops and cell phones and societies have no choice than being a part of this network. We keep chasing success when every step of our journey is a success in itself.
The need of the hour is to guide the kids, students and teens from childhood itself about the disadvantages of the internet. People only post the positive side of their lives including travel, job promotion, lavish dinners with friends, although we are aware that what we see on social media is not completely true. Still it affects us because we end up comparing ourselves with online friends’ standard of living. Either we try to make quick, temporary changes in our lifestyle to feel better or we make an effort to appear better on social media to keep up with our peers. The negative use of the internet in the society is only possible when people don’t know how to use, when to use, what to communicate and what shouldn’t be. People are so deeply involved in the web of the internet that they have no time to spend with their family, friends and relatives which is resulting in losing the social connect leading to them to isolation.
This condition of being alone increases the risk of mental health problems, negatively impacts the development of the brain’s structure, mental health issues such as depression, dementia, social anxiety and low self-esteem. In severe cases, feeling of helplessness, hopelessness and worthlessness are exact rebated by our isolation and suicidal tendencies increases. some of y'all aren't gonna like hearing this but planned obsolescence as you think of it doesn't exist. there aren't any evil businessmen sitting in a boardroom somewhere twiddling their fingers as they calculate the exact date your phone is gonna stop working
there is no magic line of code that makes your current phone slow down when it gets a new update, it's a mix of confirmation bias and the shareholder demand for every new os version to have new features. cpus also just get worse over time as more of the transistors burn out from the obscene amounts of energy poured through them daily
if anything modern hardware and software is designed for a fuckton of graceful degradation - underclocking means your phone's battery and cpu will last longer and a lot of old smartphones (even dating back to the original iphone) still fucking work even if they can't use modern apps
the problem with smartphones isn't some evil conspiracy to force you to upgrade every year, it's a combination of the limitations of electronics, the second law of thermodynamics, and good old market pressures. grow up and let yourself accept that the world is more complex than you think.

Blog Post Due 10/10
What is racialization through interpellation? What is its impact?
Racialization through interpellation shows that race is not something that is biological but something that is constructed through views of society and through culture. It explains how society teaches us to notice features that are racially marked like one's skin or eye color. Also, it's something we unconsciously identify in people. This varies by culture, is constantly shifting and an example we see in "The Social Media Handbook" is when in the 18th century, the English people would describe Irish people as "black" and "tawny" to describe the Hottentots people of Africa. This goes to show race is a concept that is shaped by social norms and is constantly changing
2. How has the rise of internet access and smartphones impacted race and social media?
African American and Latino communities have received greater access to internet and phone access, which has helped close the digital divide. Referring to closing the gap between communities that have access to modern communication technologies and those that do not. In the early days of cyberspace, non-whites had much less access to the internet. Smartphones played a crucial role in closing the gap because of the fact they are much more affordable than computers and they started to become really mainstream/accessible. In 2010, 70 percent of African Americans and Latinos that speak english were on social media apps. Which is higher percentages than white online users, indicating the internet became more racially diverse.
3. What is the recent shift towards multi-culturalism we have seen?
Explained in Race after Technology, mass marketing has moved toward ethnic niches that have a play on diversity. A good example used are the Netflix movie/show recommendations that come up on the screen, and these certain posters like those that include black cast members, can entice and they are meant to target the black audience to get them to click and check out the movie/show. Platforms like Netflix, it is not like they are asking their users about their race, instead they use algorithms like what you watched previously, what you have searched to indicate who is attracted to certain cast movie posters.
4. What does Daniels say about why you should study white supremacy online?
Jessie Daniels says that in her view, the reason you should study white supremacy online is to challenge it. She argues the reason you should care about white supremacy is because "racial vitriol" is easy to find online. There also has been a huge shift, anyone with internet connection: a sixth grader doing a report, a potentially violent skinhead, can easily stumble upon white supremacy online. It is a complicated problem because ascertaining how young people make sense of white supremacy online/how it affects them and distinguishing between those who produce it white supremacy, those who look for it, or who find it by accident is difficult to determine. The idea of white supremacy online better informs our knowledge of social movements, society, race, the internet and how young people are educated in this digital age.
