As mentioned in a previous post I found out about Vivian Maier, an amateur photographer that walked around New York, Chicago etc and took photos from a book I read. This exhibition of some of her work is truly amazing and well worth the detour. Finding Vivian Maier

My love for photography and being a photographer isn’t just about taking pretty pictures. I also have a love for the history of photography. I love to read articles about past photographers and current photographers. I love going to museums and buying books of artists work that I admire. Reading about other photographers inspires me to create great pieces of work every time I shoot.

This past weekend I came across a story I have heard about for awhile now, but never did the research over it. It is about Vivian Maier. In previous classes we had talked a little about her, but it wasn’t until a close friend of mine told me to watch the documentary they made over Ms. Maier. I watched the documentary over a few days and each time I had to stop watching to go to work or go to school, Vivian and her mysterious ways would be stuck in my head till I could continue watching.

The story started when John Maloof was writing a history book and was needing images of Chicago for it. He came across an auction and bought the negatives that belonged to a woman named Vivian Maier. The images weren’t quite what he was  looking for, but the negatives he found were outstanding and left him intrigued. He began scanning the box of negatives he found and was amazed on how talented the photographer was. He tried finding information about Maier online and found no trace of who this woman was, except for an obituary. This led him on a wild goose chase to find who Vivian Maier was.

He wanted to know how a woman of such talent could go undiscovered. During his search he found other boxes of negatives and compiled a collection of around 100,000 negatives, 700 rolls of undeveloped color film, 2,000 rolls of undeveloped black and white film, and 150 8 mm and 16 mm movies. While searching through her belongings he also found various letters that led him to different individuals who knew Vivian Maier. He found out another interesting fact about Maier, she was a nanny. He found various families who she had worked for and they had various stories to tell about Vivian.

Vivian Maier was explained to be a bold, mysterious, eccentric, and private woman. She worked for various families over the years, but she never shared with any of them where she came from, who her family was, or any kind of personal information. She was also a hoarder. She used different names when dealing with families she worked with and for her personal business. She even talked with a fake accent. For being so private, she traveled the streets in good or bad neighborhoods and even traveled the world to capture her beautiful images.

Maier’s strange and riveting life and art are revealed through never before seen photographs, films, and interviews with dozens who thought they knew her. Vivian Maier lived her life in mystery and in private. Her photographs are the only thing that tells the story of her and who she was as a person.

I have personally became very interested in Vivian Maier, as John Maloof did. Her work shows tenderness, an instant alertness to tragedy, and moments of generosity and sweetness. She was a very observant and caring person, in which may be why she was a nanny. She never seemed to defend herself as an artist, she just did the work, which I feel I relate to. There is still no reason to her madness, but her work will forever show the kind of person she was. Her work inspires me to be bold and sort of reclusive. She inspires me to be myself and to never quite shooting.

Sometimes the weirdest things happen. Today I read about the photographer Vivian Maier in the book ‘The Mystery of Henri Pick’. I wasn’t sure if she was real so I had to look her up online. It turns out that she was a nanny but also a photographer, unfortunately she didn’t always afford to develop her films. After her death they were discovered and put on display. Imagine my surprise when I later on today read about an exhibition of her photos at an art gallery. Such a weird coincidence.
