This was entirely too much fun! To answer the question for Day 5 of @tobias-carrick-appreciation-week - WWTD? He's accidentally opened a package that belongs to someone else, and the contents are very embarrassing... what does he do?

Book: Open Heart (Post Series Timeline) Pairing: Tobias x Casey Carrick (F!MC) Rating: Teen Words: 1,800 Summary: Tobias is the first one home, and when the lights go out, he accidentally opens the wrong package, and he's in for quite a surprise. Can Casey help him through it? Or is the man scarred for life?

A/N: Participating in @julychallenge Vulnerable, Emotional, Intimidation, Drama, and maybe even Grief. lol

Tobias pulled into the driveway behind his townhome under darkened skies. His hopes of getting home before the skies opened were dashed, and the flimsy newspaper he held above his head did nothing to prevent the soaking he had hoped to avoid. He sighed with relief when he stepped under the front door awning.

A two-car garage, he thought to himself. Another reason to convince Casey that they should sell the townhome and buy a house in the suburbs. It was a hard sell... he loved Boston, and so did she, but with a baby on the way, there was a good argument to be made. The biggest argument of all was his mother buying a condo just two blocks away. His beloved South-End neighborhood was about to change drastically, and he wasn’t sure he could cope.

His shoulders slouched as he reached down and picked up several packages on his front step before going inside. It was hopeless. Casey would never agree to it. He'd already tried before.

“Tobias, she's not going to be here all the time. She just wants a place nearby when she comes to Boston. With the baby on the way, she wants to be around more, and she'll be a big help to us. Besides, would you rather she just stay here with us when she visits?”

“NO!” He hollered out loud, suddenly relieved that he was the only one home.

He loved his mother, he truly did, and he even agreed having her around more once the baby arrived would be good for everyone involved. But Vivian Carrick had taken up residence with them three weeks before to oversee the work being done at her new place, and he was being reminded of why he and his mother did best when they didn't spend too much time together.

He placed the packages on the kitchen table and found a note on the fridge.

Darlings, Don’t wait for me to have dinner. I expect to be home late tonight. Love, Mom

“Yes!” He grinned, pumping a victorious fist in the air.

Casey would be home in a couple of hours, and they could have the place to themselves for a bit. He could spoil his beautiful wife as he saw fit without any competition from Mom. They could cuddle on the couch—clothing optional—and if things moved according to plan, well, they wouldn’t have to keep the volume down. A definite win!

A loud thunderclap rattled the windows, and the room lit up with the lightning strike that followed; then, everything went dark.

“Damn it!” he cursed, grateful for the bit of light that remained in the sky; he grabbed the package addressed to him and headed upstairs.

After changing out of his wet clothes, he returned to bed and opened the box. After breaking the tape and removing the packaging, he was in for a pleasant surprise.

“Oh.... nice,” he hummed with a salacious grin. His fingers traced the red lace on the teddy he already pictured on his gorgeous wife. The effects were almost instant. “Simmer down, big boy,” he said to his favorite appendage. "It's been a long day, and you need to take a nap before she gets home.”

There was another bit of lingerie as well, bit being the operative word, and then behind that...

“Well, well, well,” he beamed with approval. “Looks like we’re in for a very good time!”

He had to be the luckiest man alive. With morning sickness now in the past, their sex life had bounced right back to where it was... but that got him thinking... he Googled what sex toys were safe to use during pregnancy – after all, he was a horny bastard, but he was a protective husband and dad-to-be before all. With a bit of reassurance from the internet, he put the items back in the box, and then it hit him... what if she had wanted this to be a surprise? Feeling guilty, he repackaged the box and left a little note on top.

Hey Baby, I accidentally opened this, but don't worry! I didn’t see a thing... but I’m dying to know what you bought. xo

He hopped under the covers with a smile, knowing his wife would be home when he woke, and several hours later, that came to be. Casey leaned over to wake him with a gentle kiss on his forehead, and he awoke with a smile.

“How was your day, baby?” He asked groggily.

“I can’t complain. But I’m happy to be home with you."

“And I'm glad you're here,” he simpered, tugging her down to join him. “Good news! Ma is going to be out tonight... so we’ve got the place to ourselves.”

“Oooh,” Casey groaned, her husband already nibbling at her ear. “What are you doing?”

“Mmmhh... it’s either this or we go downstairs and eat,” he replied. “Ma’s been here too long, and I have to do something to alleviate the stress.”

“Tobias!” She playfully admonished. “Be nice to your Mom!”

“I am nice! I’m also serious. The woman can drive me insane!”

“My poor baby,” Casey purred. “What can I do to take away some of that stress?”

“Well,” he wiggled his brows. “You did get a package in the mail today.”

“I did?”

“Yep, it’s on your dresser.”

Casey flipped the light switch. Fortunately, the power had come back on, and she retrieved the brown cardboard box from her dresser. Returning to the bed, she removed its contents, a bewildered look on her face.

“Uh, hon... this isn’t my package.”

“What do you mean?” he asked, adjusting his eyes to the light.

“I was waiting on a coffee grinder... and while the things in this box can certainly be used for grinding, well... there wouldn’t be any coffee involved.”

“What?” He asked. “The lingerie... the toys... you didn’t order them?”

“Nope,” she said, flipping the box over to look at the address label – her eyes popping as her lips morphed into an amused grin. “Oh... my... God!”

“What?!” Tobias demanded, taking the box from her hand. His eyes bulged open, and he followed with what could only be described as a primal scream.

“Tobias,” Casey chuckled. “Keep it down! The neighbors will think you’re being murdered!”

“Oh my God,” he groaned, “Right about now, I wish I was!”

There it was. In bold letters. MRS. VIVIAN CARRICK.

“Oh, no! No, no, no, no, no!” Tobias wailed. “I need to shower! I need to get out of this house! I need to go to confession!”

“You’re not Catholic,” Casey laughed.

“Well, I’m willing to be tonight!”

“Hon, take it easy,” she assured. “It’s embarrassing, but it’s not the end of the world. Just tell her you accidentally opened the box, and....”

“WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I can’t let my mother know I saw this! And... who the hell is she using this with?”

“I think we have to file that second question under none of your business.”

“It is too my business!” He insisted.

Casey placed the box on her nightstand and rolled her eyes.

“T., your Mom is of age. She has a right to do whatever she wants to do and to do it in privacy. Does she know everything you’ve done?”

“That’s different!”

“Why?”

“Because she’s my MOTHER!”

“Oh,” Casey declared. “And mothers just stop being sexual human beings. You better hope that’s not true, dear, because in another six months, I’m going to be a mom, and I hope you don’t think our sex life is coming to a dramatic halt."

Tobias looked insulted. “Of course, it won’t, but she...she’s my MOTHER! I can't let her know I saw this. Can you tell her you opened it by mistake?”

“Me?!” Casey startled. “NO! I’m not doing that!”

“Why not? Baby, please? Do it for me?”

“Not even for you!” She insisted.

“I’d do It for you!”

“Oh," she chortled. "You’d tell my Mom that you accidentally opened her box of sex toys? OK."

Tobias flipped his head back and threw a pillow over his face before letting out another scream as Casey's side split with laughter.

"For what it’s worth, hon, if it were my mom, I’d just confess. You need to be honest with your mom."

“He needs to be honest with me about what?” The woman herself asked.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN OUR BEDROOM!” Tobias howled.

“The door was wide open!” Vivian pointed out. “Now, what the heck is going on in here?”

Casey handed the box to Vivian matter of factly, a shit-eating grin on her lips. “This arrived for you today. Tobias accidentally opened it, and he’s been trying to contact his therapist ever since.”

Vivian shook her head. “For the love of... I can’t be in the room with you for more than 10 minutes without the two of you engaging in some form of sexual innuendo... but I’m supposed to be a nun."

Casey turned to her husband with a shrug. “She makes a point...”

“God,” Tobias shrieked, pulling the blanket over his head. “Just take me now.”

“Vivian!” Casey said enthusiastically. “You never told me you were seeing someone!”

“Well, I didn’t want to tell anyone in the family unless I determined that he was worthy of introduction.”

“Makes sense...” Casey started as Tobias sat up, pushing the blankets away with a flourish.

“What! That’s the kind of man you’re seeing! Someone unfit of introduction!”

“Son,” she replied with an icy tone. “Do we really want to discuss how many ‘unworthy of meeting the family’ types you had in your life prior to finally settling down with this beautiful woman?"

“MA!” he yelled.

“Oh, babe,” Casey chuckled. “Like I don’t already know that....”

“That’s not the point,” Tobias groaned. He rolled onto his side, assuming the fetal position; Casey rubbed his back as she watched him coming apart.

“I’m sorry, Vivian," she smiled. "My husband is having an existential crisis. Why don’t you let me get him settled, then I’ll be downstairs... I want all the details.”

“I’d love that, darling. Normally, I’d say I’ll pour the wine, but...” she pointed to Casey’s barely there baby bump. “To be honest, I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about that anymore.”

“Oh, God...” Tobias winced.

“Viv... downstairs!” Casey ordered. “Make us a pot of herbal tea!”

Once they were alone in the room, Casey snuggled next to her traumatized husband. “Honey, why don’t you take a shower, have a nice stiff drink...”

“I can’t... I’m done for. You're going to have to raise our child on your own."

“Really? Well, that’s a shame... because you may have accidentally opened your Mom’s package, but you didn’t see the one I've had hidden in the back of my closet.”

“Wait,” Tobias's mood turned in an instant. “You... you have a package? What’s in it?”

“You’ll have to wait and see,” she winked.

“Come on, babe! Just give me a hint... is it something... you wear?”

“You’ll have to wait,” she teased, heading toward the door.

“Does it need batteries? Because... if it needs batteries... I could run out to the store.”

Casey blew him a kiss and smiled. “You’ll just have to be patient, Dr. Carrick!" Then she shut the door behind her.

Tobias jumped up from bed the second she left the room. After a quick shower, he lit candles and waited for her... rather impatiently... in bed. Casey knew the man all too well; after that exit, he didn't give his mother a second thought for the rest of the night.... and he learned an important lesson ... always check the label on a box before opening.

September MC & OCs of the Month - Special Edition: Vivian Carrick

Help us in welcoming September's MCs and OCs of the month! That's right, plural! Most months, CFWC highlights one randomly selected MC or OC from our Meet My MC / OC List. (More info here.) But this month, we're doing something different.

In August, @lilyoffandoms hosted a Writers Appreciation Month, and we announced the September Writer of the Month would be selected from its participants. But all participants agreed - Lily deserved the honor! Still, we wanted to do something nice for the eleven writers who elected to participate to help uplift other writers in the fandom. So, this month, each of the eleven participants will have one of their MCs or OCs highlighted.

We will introduce each MC / OC individually, and once all eleven have been highlighted, a masterlist for the month will be created. We hope you enjoy getting to know all about them!

The fifth OC of the Month is @jerzwriter 's Vivian Carrick!

In your own words, tell us what you like most about your OC.

It's hard to narrow it down because I just adore Vivian. She was the first original character that I created in the Choices World, and I felt like she almost created herself. It was within my Delaying the Inevitable Universe, and we met her when she walked in on Casey in her son's apartment wearing his bathrobe. After Vivian realized Casey was being truthful, there was nothing going on between her and Tobias, she made it her mission in life to change that.

At that point, I didn't know I'd have a full T/C headcanon, much less have Vivian a part of it, but I couldn't let go of her. She's a strong, smart, powerful, intuitive woman. She's witty, quick thinking, and can verbally disarm anyone in a nanosecond. Sophisticated and worldly, but she has quite a backstory, that wasn't always her life.

Despite a sometimes intimidating exterior, she has the biggest heart. She will defend those she loves to death. The way she and Tobias banter gives me life! lol

Do you feel your OC is like you at all? How are you alike or different?

We have some similarities, but I wouldn't say a lot. We both think quick on our feet and enjoy bantering/teasing. We also love putting a bully or bigot in their place. We're both extremely loyal to those we love and understand they're the most important thing in life.

While we both grew up, not poor, but not well off by any stretch, I never had to endure the overt and systemic racism that Vivian did.

We both put ourselves through school and are quite proud of it, but she followed her dreams, and I allowed myself to be talked out of too many of mine. She's definitely got more confidence than I do. I also never married into extreme wealth lol, nor did I marry - and lose - the love of my life.

But we both adore our children and would do anything for them.

What is most important to your OC? What is their motivation in life?

Her family. There are other things - justice, equity, an intense desire to prove her naysayers wrong... but nothing comes close to her family.

What are their biggest pet peeves/dislikes?

Ignorance. Especially wilful ignorance.

Racism and sexism.

Dishonesty.

Her sons making her wait decades before they get their shit together and settle down. lol

If your OC could change one thing - anything - what would it be?

The one thing she'd like to change more than anything is her late husband, Charles's death. He was the love of her life, and while she's managed to go on and live a full life without him, no one knows just how difficult that's been. Even more so, she knows the toll his death has taken on her boys, especially Tobias, who was not on the best of terms with him when he passed. While this is her greatest wish, she knows it can't happen, and she doesn't even know if it should. She doesn't like the ending but has a strong faith and believes this happened by God's design, so she doesn't feel right questioning it.

For something she feels she has a bit more of an ability to impact, she'd want to make the world a better place for her granddaughters and children like them. She knows things like systemic racism and misogyny are so ingrained in our society that they'll be almost impossible to fully overcome, but she sure as hell won't let that stop her from trying.

Also, I see Vivian as a strong ally for LGBTQIA equality. She will admit this isn't something she understood well in her younger years, but she now has a bisexual daughter-in-law, and eventually, her son, Jordan, comes out, and later, her granddaughter, Kayla. Inequity and discrimination are things that she abhors, and when she begins to what the community faces, she is a vocal ally who puts her time, money, and energy where her mouth is.

What is your OC’s favorite quote or song?

Her favorite songs are:

Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World - that was her and Charles's song.

Diana Ross's Ain't No Mountian High Enough - Because she used to sing it with Tobias and Jordan when they were children.

John Legend's All of Me - Tobias & Casey's wedding song - and Vivian was certain her son getting married was a miracle.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your OC?

Vivian is not perfect. Sometimes, her sarcasm and humor can be viewed as acerbic. She is a loving and doting mother, and as a grandmother, triple that, but she acknowledges mistakes she made when her boys were small. She and Charles had a love so strong that sometimes, it may have made the boys feel secondary, even though they never were. Also, she was determined to prove she belonged in her husband's world, not so much for herself but for those who would follow - most importantly, her children. But she acknowledges that sometimes she was so busy pursuing that agenda that she lost sight of little things that were, in the end, far more important.

She has so many accomplishments in her life that the list could go on for days. But the one thing she is most proud of is the relationship she has with her adult children, their partners, and her grandchildren. When she closes her eyes for the last time, she knows she leaves behind a legacy of love, and that's all she ever wanted.

All was organized chaos in the Carrick household, work, various Halloween parties, trick or treating keeping everyone on their toes. Everyone though was excited for a few days when Ethan and Eva were to come for a visit.

It had been a rough time, Tobias nearly losing Casey had made everyone come to grips to a degree with their own mortality. Eva by no means was a practicing Catholic, despite being brought up with many of the traditions but she felt it prudent that this year they commemorate El Dia de Los Muertos. They all had people that had passed that they would love to commemorate. So Eva and Casey organized it all. The men were not aware of what was to happen. Casey already had the Ofrendas organized and Eva had organized the flowers to be delivered on the day. Casey also invited Vivian so that she could participate also.

The day came and Casey was excited. Eva and Ethan arrived in the morning. Ethan went to the clinic to meet with Tobias while Eva stayed at the house with Casey and Kayla. Casey and Eva set up the Ofrendas. There were photos of Charles Carrick, Casey’s grandma Nonna Katerina, Mrs Martinez as well as some of Eva’s grandparents. They got to cooking. It was going to be a celebratory feast.

Ethan and Tobias came home with Sammy and Brooke. Both were a little perplexed at what was happening.

“Myself and Casey have planned a little El Dia de Los Muertos celebration.” Said Eva. After the last year me and Casey felt that it would be nice to celebrate the day of the dead.”

Both men nodded in agreement. Casey added “yes Tobias, Vivian is coming over too.”

Right on cue there was a knock on the door. It was Vivian.

Tobias was not surprised to see his mother but Vivian was surprised to see Ethan and Eva.

“Hello Vivian” said Ethan.

“Ethan, darling, Eva, how lovely to see you…” Vivian spies the Ofrendas. “What is that?”

“It is an Ofrendas. Me and Casey thought it would be nice to have an El Dia de Los Muertos celebration.” Said Eva.

“But you are Cuban, not Mexican.” Says Vivian.

“I may not be Mexican but many of the Spanish speaking Catholics have some type of celebration for it. I may not be practicing anymore but I do like the sentiments behind it.” Said Eva.

“So do I, dear, so do I.” Said Vivian, clearly emotional.

Everyone partook in the feast. After dinner Vivian and Casey put Kayla to bed whilst Eva, Tobias Ethan as well as Brooke and Sammy shared memories and stories about the people on the Ofrendas. The girls also learnt more about the cultural significance of the Day of the dead as well as All Hallows Eve and All Souls’ Day. It was time for Brooke and Sammy to go to bed. After they went the celebration turned emotional with much more stories shared about Charles, especially by Vivian and also Tobias.

“Thankfully I am not up there after the birth of Kayla” said Casey.

Tobias nodded in agreement, clearly emotional. “That is an emotional hell that I do not care to live through, ever again.” Said Tobias.

“At least if I did go you would have known how proud I was of you and how much I loved you.” Said Casey.

“That is true.” Said Tobias.

“I take comfort in that at least I know he would be proud.” Said Tobias.

Vivian nodded in agreement. “He was upset and I am sure that he wished he had longer…”

“Please do not be in a hurry to join him, please. Vivian.” Said Casey.

“I will be sticking around for awhile, I enjoy my grandchildren and my daughter in law far too much.” Said Vivian with a chuckle. “Charles would have loved to have been a grandfather, that much I do know.”

The night continued, and it was truly a celebration of those who had gone before and more importantly everyone was able to appreciate what they had currently , especially Tobias and Casey.

The night came to an end. Vivian went back to her townhouse while Ethan and Eva stayed with Tobias and Casey.

“That was a lovely thought you and Eva had.” Said Tobias.

“It was a joyous evening, I think Vivian also enjoyed being involved too.”

“Not that my mother ever needs another reason to come over but yeah, it was lovely to invite her.”

Casey and Tobias decide to put the Ofrendas up next year also.

Authors note:

I know it was for Halloween but there was an evolution of an idea. Initially it was a Halloween party with Eva convincing Ethan to go dressed up as if they were doing a full El Dia de Los Muertos celebration but then it evolved to a more intimate gathering as was in the fic, actually I wanted an excuse to add Vivian really.

Those who read my Tobias x Casey fics are already familiar with the formidable Vivian Carrick, and I've already posted character information here and here. There will not be much (if any) character deviation from her in this series, though there will be subtle differences. Here is an overview of my beloved Vivian.

Name: Vivian Jonson Carrick

Hometown: Born and raised in Washington, DC, where she still resides today.

Age: Vivian is in her mid 60's in this series

Sexual Orientation: Straight

Relationship Status: Widowed, although she's had a few relationships since her husband's death.

Occupation: Vivian is an artist and a curator. She is also a philanthropist and runs a non-profit that she started with her late husband.

Faceclaim: Alfre Woodard

Personality traits: Strong, outspoken, creative, not easily intimidated, smart, clever, fiercely loyal to those she loves, humorous, intimidating, loves her children, can be meddlesome, altruistic, larger than life, witty, charming (when she wants to be), never to be underestimated.

Vivian is largely the same charater she is in my headcanon and in other Tobias x Casey AUs. This one may focus a little more on her career as an artist, and she might be a little more ferocious here (just a little!) She makes her series debut in Chapter 3 and will make recurring appearances throughout the series.

Tobias & Casey: While this gives us a peek at a lovely Easter in their future (A Carrick Family Easter). This year is a little different.

Casey is on maternity leave with her first baby due in May (but she's coming early shhh). She had to go out earlier than expected due to minor complications, and she's not happy. Tobias was scheduled to work, but Ethan stepped in and told him to go home and take care of his godbaby's momma.

Both Casey's parents and Vivian offered to come up to Boston to spend Easter there, but they advised them to save that time for when the baby comes. So, Tobias made Casey her favorite meal (steak burritos), and they invited a couple friends who were off over for an early supper.

He gave her an Easter basket filled with her favorite easter candies (Reeses eggs and Lindt truffles), and he's giving her a backrub since she is as uncomfortable AF.

Casey went way untraditional on the Easter gift front, and handed Tobias this as he was cooking.

For the 'not so nice asks'. Betrayal, mask, mistake and secret. I wanna ask this for Tobias, but he's not an OC. Vivian would be my OC choice, I will leave it up to you. :)

Hey there! Let's be clear on one thing... I am ALWAYS willing to talk to about the Carricks. I will talk about them all day, every day! lol So thank you, and I'll answer for both! From this list

betrayal: Has your OC ever been betrayed by someone they thought they could trust? Has your OC ever betrayed someone who trusted them?

Tobias: In many ways, he was betrayed by people he should have been able to trust from the very start. Tobias grew up straddling two contrasting worlds in the same city. On one hand, there were the mansions, prep schools, and perfect landscapes (at least to the public eye) of his white father's family's rich and powerful family. On the other, there were the modest homes, Sunday church services, regular struggles, and warm love where his black mother was raised. Save for a couple of relatives, his father's family never fully accepted Vivian or her two sons. He was too young to understand all the dynamics at play, but Tobias knew he wasn't wanted by many and was despised by others who were supposed to be his home base, the place where he found sanctuary.

On the other hand, he lived with unconditional love and acceptance with the Johnsons. He was happy there, despite their world not having the comforts and privileges of his father's. His fondest memories of childhood were summers spent at his grandparents; most of his cousins were there as well. They'd play ball outside until the streetlights came on, then sit in the yard with the old folks until it was time for bed. Sunday meant attending the church where his great-grandfather had been the pastor and prominent community leader (also where Tobias sang in the children's choir.) With rare exceptions, his father's family betrayed all family was supposed to be from the start - his mother's family was where he found his home. Until...

When the cousins approached their teens, it was harder to mesh his worlds together. Tobias had wealth and privilege his other cousins couldn't imagine; he was attending school with the children of world leaders, he wanted for nothing - whereas many of his maternal cousins - his best friends - attended inner-city public schools dealing with the myriad of problems that came with them. As the close-knit group approached adolescence, there was resentment and division. Eventually, many of his closest cousins essentially ghosted Tobias. It hurt like hell and left him feeling he had no home base.

When it came time to attend college, Tobias decided to attend Howard University, an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges & Universities). His father was not happy with his choice, mostly because he wanted his son to attend an Ivy League university because he knew the value of having an Ivy degree. But Mr. Carrick didn't approach it the best way, and Tobias felt it was just his father pushing him into the "white" world and denying him the opportunity to connect with his own identity. Tobias saw this as a major betrayal, and he and his father were estranged for years, only making tentative peace when his father was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. In denial, Tobias did not make as much of an effort as he should have; when he died sooner than expected, it impacted Tobias deeply.

(I told you it was long - but this is my baby! lol)

As to Tobias betraying someone - in canon - he betrayed Ethan during med school by attempting to sabotage his placement at Edenbrook. Tobias felt terrible about it - but their competition had turned toxic (on both men's parts), and he was reading from his father's death. But he held on to that for over a decade, partly due to shame.

Vivian: (I'll try to be shorter! lol) Vivian met her future husband Charles while the two were attending George Washington University - it was true love, and they knew it from the start. They knew they'd face resistance to their relationship, but she never expected to receive it from her parents, and it hurt her terribly. She understood their reasoning; they were afraid for their daughter, but young and in love, Vivian didn't want to hear it. She and Charles split up for some time, but in the end, they knew their love was true, and they eloped. The only person she had told was her best friend since childhood. Worried about Vivian, she told her parents after she and Charles had left, and Vivian was crushed by her betrayal. She forgave, but it took a long time.

Vivian is a woman of her word, so betrayal isn't something she does. However, sometimes we do things and don't realize we are. The thing she feels the most guilt over is not being there for her children as much as she feels she should have been when they were little. Part of that was because she and Charles were so determined to be successful and thrive in the DC social scene, especially since his family disowned him, and Vivian felt she needed to use her position to help elevate others. While that was noble, it did take time away from Tobias & Jordan, the two people who mattered most to her in the world. In later years, she understood how that hurt them, and she's done all she can to make it up to them.

mask: Does your OC wear a mask, literally or figuratively? What goes on beneath it? Is there anyone in their life who gets to see who they are under the mask?

Tobias: Not now, but he did. The sarcastic, charming playboy life he led was authentic to a degree. He was handsome, grew up with wealth most of us would never know, and he had a bit of a God complex, no doubt. But a lot of the bravado was an act. His father's death impacted him in the worst way, and he ended up cutting himself off from all but a few of the people who were closest to him in the world. On one hand, he thought he was God's gift; on the other, he felt unworthy. It was better to lead a hedonistic life without depth to protect himself and, to a degree, others.

Age and maturity play a part in his changing; part of it is falling in love for the first time (and not knowing what the f*ck to do with that!), part was Casey's near death, which took place after she dumped him and was not speaking to him. All of this made him realize, he wanted more and he needed to get his life together.

Vivian: With her family and friends? No. Never. She is as authentic as they come - sometimes to a fault. The only time she wears a mask (so to speak) is when she's rubbing elbows with the power brokers of the world. Vivian is quite skilled at making power brokers part with their cash to help her passion projects - mostly educational programs for underprivileged youth. She has worked hard to improve arts and science education and create programs that expose children to careers they wouldn't have known otherwise.

mistake: What's the worst mistake your OC ever made? What led to them making it? Have they been able to fix it? How have they moved on?

Tobias: His biggest was not reconciling fully with his father before he passed away (more on that above). His second biggest mistake was stealing Stefanie (Casey's patient) from Edenbrook - this cost him his relationship with Casey and the fallout that took place after led to the chemical attack in Book 2. Logically, he knew that wasn't his fault, but deep down, he felt he started that chain reaction.

The worst part of the mistake with his father - there is nothing that he could do to fix it, Charles is gone. It also led to a huge rift between Tobias and his brother, Jordan, that took years to repair. He started going to therapy after the chemical attack, and that helped him begin to make peace. However, having a child of his own both hurt and healed Tobias in many ways. He never fully moves on, he will die that regret, but he does find some peace.

As to the issue with Stephanie, his healing was becoming a better person, living to his full potential, and, later, receiving forgiveness from Casey and building a life together.

Vivian: It was not spending enough time with her children when they were younger (see the first question above). She does make peace with it and reconciles by being the best mom and grandmom she can possibly be. She has a wonderful relationship with both of her sons as adults.

secret: What's one secret your OC never wants anyone to know about them?

Tobias and Vivian: Lumping this because it's kind of the same for both of them. The answer is nothing. While both of them have had things they're not proud of in their lives (who doesn't?), they're very forthcoming and "real." They'll admit their mistakes and learn from them. They're happy to share their experiences if they think it will help others. So no skeletons they're terrified of unearthing.

Noting her daughter-in-law’s distress, Vivian swiftly crossed the crowded floor, pulling Casey into a secluded alcove.

“I knew it!” She insisted, her voice marked with indignance. “I knew you were not all right with this!”

“Vivian, I never said that, I...”

“You don’t have to say anything! It’s written all over your face.”

Casey rested her furrowed brow on her hand. She didn’t need a mirror to confirm her mother-in-law’s accusations; she had no doubt that her face conveyed every ounce of discomfort and pain coursing through her, and that only made everything worse. She wanted to cry, scream, to run out of the opulent venue filled with happy, sparkling people, and retreat to the darkness of her room where she could let her emotions out without the benefit of the condemning eyes of others. But even now, her loyalty to her husband was paramount. Doing her best to attain an appearance of neutrality, she met Vivian’s with defiance.

“I’m fine with this, Vivian. I told you I am, and you’ll have to take me at my word.”

The older woman’s shoulders slumped in the most unsophisticated manner as a sigh, more sorrowful than judgemental, escaped her. Casey felt her hand on her shoulder; the small act of understanding and solidarity meant more to her than Vivian could ever know.

“I could kill him!” she hissed through clenched teeth. “Casey, darling, you must know that it is all right for you to not be OK with this. I know the contemporary milieu demands that you’re some sort of ‘phobic’ if you dare to disagree with anything, but that’s not true. This is your marriage, and you’re entitled to live it your way. It doesn’t make you hateful if you tell Tobias this does not work for you!”

“No,” Casey sighed, swallowing the lump in her throat before she turned to face the woman she loved as a mother. “It wouldn’t make me hateful in the least, but it would make me a liar.”
