Fest for Beatles Fans 2024 Write-Up
In case anyone wants to know what goes on at these things, I can at least give you a run-down of what I did at this one, though as always there was far more going down than any one person could see. I tend to favor panels and discussions over bands, so I am sure I missed a lot of great music. Because the bands were great.
It was held this year at the TWA Hotel, which is part of JFK International Airport and has retained a lot of the features of when it used to be a terminal. I posted photos of it last year when I was there on a layover, and I still love it to death. They did NOT let me ride on the baggage thingy though. In addition, I was unable to secure a room at the hotel, though if they hold it here again I will be snagging one because, like I said, the place is bonkers.
Friday
I entered my cross-stitch in the art contest, because why not? While there ran into several people whom I had met last August at the Fest in Chicago.
Beatles Biography panel with Vivek Tiwary (The Fifth Beatle graphic novel) and Madeline Bocaro (In Your Mind - The Infinite Universe of Yoko Ono). Vivek comes off very passionate and sweet, very respectful of Brian Epstein and cognizant of the importance of telling his story right. Bocaro is also very passionate, but I'm afraid some of us present her personal Ono pendulum has swung too far to admit any human fault in her subject. I later bought the Brian book, but not the Ono.
First Generation Fan Panel was mostly Leslie Healy recounting her adventures, which are legion: she was at the Ed Sullivan dress rehearsal, and at Shea Stadium, and she's *also* the one who got that audio at Paul's house when she visited all four Beatles in 1967. Also, she had a Bearded Collie, which I also had growing up, so that gave me a thrill.
I entered the 60s dress up contest -- second time as Twiggy was the charm, and I won! And then there was a lot of dancing. Gogo boots, ironically, not so much made for such activities.
Saturday
Chatted with some folks because it was more interesting that listening to the speakers, oops. The guy from the Ranking the Beatles podcast is lovely and we've already been in touch since. Also Terry Crain who wrote a great coffee table book about NEMS Beatles merch, which I bought last year.
Went to the dealer's room and bought silly buttons, like TO HELL WITH THE 'BEATLES' and I ❤️ PAUL. There were butcher covers and all that jazz, and horrid dolls, and all the lovely awful things, none of which I could ever afford. But I can buy buttons!
Lovely friends entered the talent contest and proceeded to the finals, and they kicked so much ass and I am so proud of them.
Academic panel with Ken Womack, Christine Feldmman-Barrett, and Andy Nichols was pretty good, a lot of talk about how subsequent generations get hooked and sort of the state of Beatles fandom/academia today. Which feels fairly positive, in the sense that all present felt there is more respect now than there was--though still room to improve on that score.
As a side note, all of my interactions with Womack convince me he's a great guy, very passionate in his love for the Beatles and very devoted not only to doing this right but in elevating lesser-heard voices. He's a very likable man.
Speaking of, next he interviewed Laurie Kaye, who did the radio interview with John on his last day. Her story was very moving.
Tried to dance again this evening after the talent show but unlike the previous night, everyone thought we were weird and stared forbiddingly at us from their seated positions.
But my PAUL IS DEAD / IF YOU WANT IT / HAPPY CHRISTMAS FROM JOHN & YOKO shirt was a hit. Finally.
Sunday
Saw Jude Southerland-Kessler talk about the "birth of the beatles" but sadly it was NOT about the tv film of the same name. So I went to chat with Adrian Sinclair and Allen Kozinn instead, which they later tweeted about.
Beatlemania in the 21st Century panel was about, well, what it says. Next was Women's History of the Beatles which was also interesting and involved various writers, teachers, fans, podcasters, etc. I got to meet Erika from BC the Beatles which was very cool.
Then came the Laurence Juber and Steve Holley panel which I have mentioned elsewhere.
Jenny Boyd talked about fashion and the Apple Boutique, hosted by a lady who wrote a book about Beatles and fashion I would like to read.
Fantastic band with great additional harmonies, which I knew who they were.
I did not win the art contest. I did get a participation ribbon. I'm not even a millennial.
We then found a quiet place to chat, of which which the hotel had many, and then I needed to go to bed so I could be bad in like five hours for my flight.
I've probably forgotten lots of things but that is the general run down. There was also a video room, two stages for bands, more art, authors and guests at tables all weekend, and Mickey Dolenz, whom I did not meet but it's cool he was there.

Joint Replacement 101: Understanding the Procedure and Recovery Process
Tumblr media
Joint replacement surgery is a common procedure that is performed to alleviate pain and improve mobility in individuals who have severe joint damage. This surgery involves replacing a damaged joint with a prosthetic one, made of metal, plastic, or ceramic materials. It is often recommended for individuals who have tried non-surgical treatments such as medication, physical therapy, and injections, but have not experienced significant relief.
If you or a loved one is considering joint replacement surgery, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of the procedure and recovery process. In this blog post, we will cover the basics of joint replacement surgery and highlight the top joint replacement surgeon in Bhopal, India.
Understanding the Procedure:
Joint replacement surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep during the procedure. The surgery can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours, depending on the joint being replaced and the complexity of the case.
During the surgery, the damaged joint is removed, and the surgeon will replace it with a prosthetic joint. The prosthetic joint is designed to mimic the natural movement of a healthy joint, allowing for improved mobility and reduced pain.
The most common joints that are replaced are the hip and knee joints. However, other joints such as the shoulder, elbow, and ankle can also be replaced.
Recovery Process:
After the surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room where you will be monitored closely. You may experience some pain and discomfort, but your doctor will prescribe pain medication to help manage it.

The Desi Guide to Binge-Watching in the Holiday Season
I remember going to watch the comedy “Luv Shuv Te Chicken Khurana” at AMC Mercado in Santa Clara California a few years back. There were 3 people in the theater that afternoon. My girlfriend and I, both die-hard Bollywood first day first show fanatics. And a white guy. The movie was a slow disappointment, but the white guy loved it. He told us that he came for the color, the song, and the dance and didn't mind if the experience may be marred by badly contexed sub-titles.
Bollywood forgets that the greater audience may be beyond the desi crowd. Some filmmakers need to start thinking about that paradigm. Every time a bhangra song plays in a club, the white people love swinging into action. Holi at Stanford is mostly white and most technology companies are hotbeds of Indian culture, led by Bollywood styling.
As Desis, Bollywood is our expression, whether we were born in the sub-continent or not, whether we moved out of India decades ago or are fresh off the boat; we know the songs, we dance to the tunes, we dress influenced by the stars, we follow their Instagram feeds, our karaoke sessions are Bollywood the theme, our conversations are lined with famous dialogues from Bollywood movies, we line up for miles outside theaters when a Rajni movie releases, we turn up in thousands when the stars visit to perform, we represent our Desiness through a lot of nuances borrowed from Bollywood. Bollywood is a big expression. Almost 2 billion people around the world get it.
Here is our recommendation list for the Christmas holidays. Whether you are a Bollywood fan or not, the quality and expression of this content will warm you this season.
  Number 10   Haq Se
Loosely based on  Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, the depiction of the lives of 4 sisters in Kashmir during the conditions it is in is a beautifully poignant story about the aspirations and ambitions of women and the society. A must watch for beautiful scenery and excellent performances by all actors. Starring Rajiv Khandelwal. Surveen Chawla, Simone Singh, directed by Ken Ghosh, Set in the turbulent terrorist infested Kashmir, the story revolves around the Mirza sisters. In Kashmir, where the society is conditioned to be very misogynistic and patriarchal. Women are suppressed and they can't voice their opinion or create their paths. This is the story of the women who dare to. Warm Kashmir colors are perfect for your holiday binge watching. View Trailer  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orP_-9rWWy8

  Number 7 Sacred Games
The hair-raising plot of India's first Netflix Original is one of the highly-raved shows.    Number 6 Powder
Powder is one of those underrated show which more than nine years old and a bit ahead of its time. The show aired on Sony TV in 2010 and went off the air due to poor ratings. Thankfully, Netflix resurrected it from the dusty corners and now offers it to everyone. The show follows a team of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officers as they team up to arrest a group of drug traffickers, peddlers, and smugglers. Sure, it's nothing like Narcos, but if you like those kinds of drug crime dramas, then it might be the one for you. Interestingly, this show premiered about five years before Narcos went on air.
The show brings together an amazing cast comprising of Pankaj Tripathi, Rasika Dugal, Manish Choudhary, and Geetika Tyagi.

Number 4  Yeh Rishtey hain Pyar Ke
Out of all the sitcoms airing on Indian Television, we love and recommend this show for holiday binge-watching. Its young, uninhibited and has a surprising storyline of a young couple and an evil mom, yet there is no regular drama in dealing with the situation. The actors are well-chosen and a few episodes into the show, you will fall in love with the characters and believe their love story. You will cry with them, you will laugh with them and put on loop their beautiful moments. This is not your traditional desi serial so be prepared for a genuine breath of fresh air.
In short, you will want to fall into the love they share. Directed by Ashish Shrivastava, produced by Rajan Shahi at Directorskutproduction; the almost 200 episodes already streaming on hotstar could be your romantic holiday season binge. The actors Shaheer Sheikh, Rhea Sharma and Ritvick Arora are well cast and carry the show on their able shoulders. A must romantic see.

Breathe has undoubtedly taken the Indian storytelling to another level. The plot revolves around the lives of ordinary men who are faced with unexpected situations.
Kabir Sawant, a talented officer of the criminal division, assembles the missing pieces of unrelated deaths, all of which lead him to a common suspect. It is exciting to watch how the drama unfolds between the suspect who is trying to save his dying son and the officer who is adamant to impart justice. Starring R. Madhavan, Amit Sadh, Sapna Pabbi
Produced by Vikram Malhotra .  Completely Bingable.

It stars Shefali Shah, Adil Hussain, Rasika Dugal, Rajesh Tailang, and many other brilliant actors. The series is based on the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, which is widely known as the Nirbhaya case. A 23-year-old girl and her male friend were beaten up and brutally assaulted in a running bus near Munirka in New Delhi while they were going home after catching a movie.
The girl was gang-raped and assaulted with an iron rod, following which the pair was thrown naked and injured on the road, after which the culprits tried to run them over with the bus. Architects of Rock
The Gay Architects of Rock
That understanding played out in vital Rolling Stone pictures like David Cassidy flaunting his bare middle down to his pubic hair, in a Playboy-style centerfold, and Jim Morrison seething beside the cover line "He's Hot, He's Sexy, He's Dead."
Athlete McLean, who acted as an associate to George Harrison 50 years prior, saw the profundity of the connection between the Beatles and Mr. Epstein one August day not some time before the chief's demise. Mr. McLean's activity was to get the artist musician Harry Nilsson, a promising new craftsman back then, and drive him to a meeting with Mr. Harrison at the house he was leasing on Blue Jay Way in the Hollywood Hills, Calif.
Photograph Mr. Epstein, focus, with the Beatles in a lodging in Paris in January 1964. Credit Harry Benson/Hulton Archive, by means of Getty Images
There was discussion of Mr. Nilsson maybe joining the Beatles' incipient organization. That is when things turned sour, Mr. McLean said.
"George was discussing how brilliant the entire thing would have been, endeavoring to persuade Harry to join the organization," Mr. McLean reviewed. "It was all awesome until the point when Harry stated, 'The main thing is, I don't figure I could be overseen by a gay man.'" (Mr. Epstein's sexuality was known by numerous in the business at the time.)
Angered, Mr. Harrison gave his aide a gesture.
"Instant, Harry was out of the house," Mr. McLean said. "George, similar to all the Beatles, was amazingly strong of Brian. To them, Brian was the man." (After Mr. Epstein kicked the bucket, Mr. Nilsson had a rapprochement with the band and worked intimately with John Lennon.)
Roger Daltrey, the lead vocalist of the Who, had a comparable regard for Mr. Lambert, who had a high society foundation when those of his level once in a while collaborated with common laborers miscreants like Mr. Daltrey.
"Pack was the main 'elegant' fellow I at any point met who wouldn't speak condescendingly to me," Mr. Daltrey said in "Lambert and Stamp." "Pack had this courageous quality."
At the time, men like Mr. Lambert needed to. Up until 1967, being gay was illicit in Britain, and long after that law changed, gay men remained an objective of police entanglement, extortion and beatings. Mr. Epstein was struck and was the objective of extortion before he kicked the bucket in 1967 from a unintentional overdose of dozing pills and liquor.
In the meantime, huge numbers of these men included extraordinary power inside their circle. As administrators of a portion of the time's most strong British musical crews, they remained at the bleeding edge of sounds, sensibilities and styles that would devastate and redo popular culture.
The gay chiefs of that time were blunt about their sexuality, if just among companions and associates. Other than Mr. Epstein and Mr. Lambert, those men included Robert Stigwood (director of Cream and the Bee Gees), Simon Napier-Bell (the Yardbirds, Marc Bolan), Billy Gaff (Rod Stewart), Ken Pitt (David Bowie), Barry Krost (Cat Stevens) and Larry Parnes (who formed pre-Beatles British rockers, including Tommy Steele and Billy Fury).

Their sexual introduction was reflected by Americans including Nat Weiss (who supervised the Beatles' business advantages and later oversaw James Taylor), Danny Fields (who oversaw Iggy Pop and the Stooges and, later, the Ramones), and in addition music tycoons including David Geffen and Clive Davis (who recognizes as cross-sexual).
As indicated by Mr. Napier-Bell, some portion of the reason British gay men of his time inclined toward the music business was on the grounds that it was one of only a handful couple of ranges "where you could be out among yourselves. It resembled a private club," he said. "It was such a decent life. You'd go to Robert Stigwood's home and it resembled a gay bar."
Jim Fouratt, who has worked in the music business since the 1960s, trusts the men in Mr. Napier-Bell's hover conveyed to the rising rock scene an uncommon comprehension of picture. "As gay men, we need to change ourselves keeping in mind the end goal to survive," he said. "That matches impeccably with the disguise of shake 'n' move, with the dream."
Martin Aston, the creator of "Separating the Walls of Heartache: How Music Came Out," said the association between shake's gay directors and picture shaping stems from the way that "gay men at the time would be judged altogether on what they looked like. It wasn't care for there were bunches of pleasant spots to go and have beautiful discussions. It was altogether conveyed through cruising."
Subsequently, Mr. Aston stated, gay men built up a solace with the specialty of being seen, "rather than straight men, who, before the marvel of the 'metrosexual,' were undermined by the idea of being taken a gander at, of turning into a protest."
Vivek Tiwary, the creator of "The Fifth Beatle," contends that Mr. Epstein's sexual introduction affected the Beatles' open picture.
"Brian Epstein's appreciation for the greater part of the Beatles, and specifically to John, enabled him to make a picture for the band that was engaging to young ladies, as well as to young men," Mr. Tiwary said. "Brian recognized what it resembled to be a kid, and also how to draw in them. A straight chief may very well believe, 'Here's a cluster of adorable young men that young ladies will love.' He may make them so young lady inviting that they appear to be excessively powerless for folks, making it impossible to get into them."
One of Mr. Epstein's essential choices was to change the Beatles' outfits, from denim and cowhide to natty suits. Utilizing the best neighborhood tailors, he got the band into single-breasted, three-catch mohair suits, with limit lapels and considerably smaller jeans, as indicated by Mark Lewisohn in his book on the band, "Tune In."
Photograph From left, Pete Townshend, Kit Lambert and Roger Daltrey, recording in I.B.C Studios, amid the Who's sessions for "The Seeker." Credit Chris Morphet/Redferns
By sharpening such looks, the chiefs accomplished more than impact the introduction of artists. They propelled the picture of another sort of man. As the '60s advanced, hermaphrodism wound up noticeably integral to male show, with long hair, splendidly hued attire, and, on account of the mods of the mid-'60s, gaudy custom-made suits.
"The mods adored just to be seen strolling down the road, sharp dressed with sharkskin jeans and cosmetics," said James Cooper, the chief of "Lambert and Stamp." "These extreme folks wore eyeliner."
Mr. Fouratt believes that a significant part of the consent for the sexual orientation obscuring originated from the spreading drug culture. "Medications enabled men and young men to find their magnificence and gentility," he said. "The egotistism of heroes resembles the peacock, where the male is the wonderful one, not the female. That turned into the bleeding edge in shake 'n' roll, energized by the gay chiefs."
It played out most unmistakably in a star like Mick Jagger, who embraced a batty and dressing persona, influences shared by the Rolling Stones' first administrator, Andrew Loog Oldham.
"Mick was alluring for that trimming," Mr. Oldham said. "Numerous men may state to their mates, 'Gracious, he's a poof!' So they wouldn't fret their spouses or lady friends getting a charge out of him."
Straight demigods additionally found that appropriating the arousing consciousness of gay men paid off in sexual open doors. "David Bowie needed to constrain the regular workers folks in his band the Spiders from Mars to wear those glitz garments," Mr. Aston said. "In any case, when they saw the effect it had on ladies, they resembled, 'Pass me the redden!'"
In any case, given the denunciation of homosexuality at the time, one may anticipate that the rockers will have some inconvenience with the gay men who prompted them. On account of the Who, Mr. Cooper trusts the individuals fortified with Mr. Lambert not notwithstanding his sexual personality but rather in some courses as a result of it. The improbability, and common hazard, of the association between Mr. Lambert (a high society, favored gay man) and his accomplice in administration, Chris Stamp (a straight road kid) awed them profoundly.
