Creating the Desert

a quick sped up video on the building of the desert biome for this project. Built in Maya

I will next be texturing this biome and it will then be ready for drawing the 2D animation over the top of it.

Cactus

I tried a few times to create the cacti for this biome although I didnt like the result of any of them. The first attempt can be seen in the sped up video above.

I then attempted again after seeing a tutorial on YouTube by Ed4dProductions which ended up looking like this

It was an improvement but it wasn't the look I was going for so unfortunately I had to outsource the Cactus. I used a model I found on Turbosquid by VisualCentre for the cacti.

It fits in a lot better with the environment I am trying to create and fits the overall aesthetic I am trying to create.

after looking at different sand textures for the desert island I am creating I couldn't find any I liked as they were all too realistic. I found a repeating sand image that I liked which worked great but I had an issue with the fact that there was no bump maps to add depth to the floor of the island so I had to create my own bump map in photoshop.

I did this by going into Filter > 3D > Generate Bump Map and looking in the preview, then saving.

This has worked much better than I expected as well and has left me with a good base to work up from on the desert island.
