Yep, it's the easiest for me to get recordings straight to my laptop. I like using DeSmuME and VisualBoyAdvance (you can get these directly from their websites.) I get my games from Vimm's Lair and just unzip the file and drag it to the emulator to play. Make sure to enable Real Time Clock in the options for time based events to work.

It depends on which platform you're talking about. For GBA I've never had problems with VisualBoyAdvance, although I've seen some talk that it's not as good for serious hacking/coding. It runs Sacred Echoes fine though, so I'm assuming FE romhacks in general work with it.

I didn't realise GBA emulation was around so early on in the 00s, I was reading thru some of the leaked design docs for Rayman 3 GBA and one of the docs was discussing visual effects on the GBA - with a screenshot capture of someone playing F-Zero on VisualBoyAdvance.

While looking around with the palette viewer in VisualBoyAdvance (my emulator of choice) I found something odd in the intro of the game while choosing a pet...

The very top on the sprite side is for the currently selected pet but the 6 below are for the ships that the pets are in. The order goes white with blue accents (Cook), purple (Kokichi), yellow (Piyo), pink (Lollo), blue (Kojiro) and green which cannot be seen in game since a 6th ship is never loaded in the selection. I did find out how to load the palette over an existing ship to show what it may have looked like if used.

It’s a bright green that does not match any of the selectable stacomi in the intro. The only character this could go with is Booltal the alien. Speaking of Booltal...

The palette at the very top of the sprite side is for the stacomi (Kojiro in this case) but the one right below is for Booltal. Notice that they have the same blush color and red coloring as Kojiro but these are never used on Booltal in their current state. All the stacomi have an red antenna orb that uses the red part of their palette but Booltal has a green arrow and would not need this part of the palette. It could be used for their surprised animation with the mouth open though but we still have the pink blush that is not used for Booltal at all (unless there is a event I am missing where Booltal does use this blush color.)

This along with the fact that they are referred to as being a stacomi and have a small slime form designed allows me to theorize that this green ship palette was meant to be used with Booltal at one point or could have been part of an downloadable update that unlocked the ability to raise Booltal like the other characters.

Going with this theory means that Booltal may have been paired up with Kojiro (in canon) and them being removed from the game may be the explanation for Kojiro not having a gender.

This shows Kojiro’s name as being ‘temporary’ meaning that the details of characters might have not been finalized at this stage. Now this was found on December of 2001 but it’s only how far the captures for this page go on the wayback machine so it may have been originally uploaded much earlier. There is no mention of Booltal on this page (so this kinda disproves my theory) but if they were in the process of deciding what to do with Booltal (keeping them or removing them from the game) then that info might not be allowed on the internet until something final is decided. Or maybe Kojiro just has no gender because they are a slime and I am reading way too much into it.
