There was a Greek guy in the military that went to USA for work and some guys were making fun of him because apparently to them, Greeks don't use cars. The Greek obviously decided to play along like yeah unbelievable right? Until some finally realised that he was being sarcastic.

Like Usians go to Greece for vacation obviously to the islands and they think the rest of Greece doesn't have cars?? Don't they visit Athens?? How do these come up with these conclusions even though they are the first country with the largest tourist numbers in Greece.

I doubt these particular Americans have been in many places outside their own country, let alone Greece. It’s a classic case of US centrism, according to such people only USA and 3-4 other countries have cars.

Besides, of course there are cars in the islands too - only a couple Saronic ones which have banned them to not allow a degradation of the natural and architectural environment - so these people have certainly not been in Greece, be it in the islands or elsewhere.

Also actually Americans are not amongst the largest numbers of tourists Greece gets, in fact Greece is now becoming a rising destination for Americans.

Hydra might not be the largest island out there, but it certainly packs a punch when it comes to charm and beauty.

To reach Hydra, hop on one of the high-speed ferries or flying dolphins from Piraeus, the port of Athens. In just about 1.5-2 hours, you'll find yourself in a world that seems to be frozen in time.

Hydra is famous for its distinctive architecture, unspoiled natural beauty, and the fact that no cars and motorbikes are allowed on the island.

That's right – it's a haven for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Instead, donkeys, bicycles, and your own two feet are the main modes of transport here.

The phrasing is a little vague so I have to give you a fair warning that you can only combine a certain mainland region with a few islands nearby. And a plan like that needs 2 weeks minimum unless of course you adjust it to going to one island or visiting only one prefecture from a mainland region which still needs a week.

I can think of these feasible combos:

Peloponnese + Cruise in the Saronic islands

Sterea Hellas + Cruise in the Saronic islands

Sterea Hellas + one MAX two from the Cyclades islands

Thessaly + one of the Sporades islands

Epirus + one of the Heptanese islands

Epirus + a Paxi - Antipaxi islands day cruise

You can find numerous historical locations everywhere around Greece but in order to make your life easier, choose the first one or a BONUS plan I will mention last.

Peloponnese is the southernmost region of the Greek mainland. It is probably the region most packed with history. It probably has the most archaeological sites (although these are everywhere), it has the most important Byzantine monuments of the south and, on the top, it is the most important region of Modern Greek history (in short, it has Mycenaean Greek settlements, the ancient grounds of the Olympic Games, the best preserved ancient Theatre, the ruins of Sparta, three Byzantine Cities, Venetian castles and fortresses, countless war museums and houses / museums of the Heroes of the Independence War, the first capital of Greece and more). This is combined with great natural beauty. The coastline of the Peloponnese has many great beaches and the heart of the region is mountainous and full of old traditional villages which retain their historical character. From Nafplion (the aforementioned first capital) you can take a cruise or stay in the Saronic Islands that are very close (i.e Hydra, Poros, Spetses, Aegina etc). A tight trip can be done in 10 days, full immersion and chilling needs more.

I am gonna recommend an alternative "clever" plan. You want history and mainland / islands. So why don't you just go to Crete?

Crete is a massive island, one of the biggest islands in the Mediterranean. It is home of the Minoan Civilization which precedes the Mycenaean and it has remarkably reserved archaeological sites. It also has a few of the best Archaeological Museums of Greece, numerous Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman monuments. It has some of the prettiest towns and the third largest city of Greece, Heraklion (BTW Greeks, I heard Patras downsized?!?!?!?!). Crete is one of the most traditional regions in Greece, especially men frequently dress in traditional costumes. They have their own dialect of Greek and the Cretan diet is often voted the healthiest cuisine in the world. Their food and alcoholic beverages are to die for.

Crete is so big that you think you are in the mainland. You need your own car to explore. It has some of the best beaches of the country. The landscape diversity is the best part though. Crete has the only natural palm forest of Europe, it has endemic wildlife, many attractions of natural beauty like the Samaria gorge and a super rugged terrain (roads are a toughie, ye be warned). In fact, Crete has two amongst the 10 highest mountain ranges in Greece which help create this dramatic landscape (it has ski resorts for the winter).

And if you think you are missing out on the "Island hopping" there are many small islands around Crete that you can visit daily (like Chrissi and Elafonissi with their world-class beaches, Spinalonga for history because it was a leper colony and the very special beautiful Gavdos which is the southernmost region of Europe).

Okay this is obviously a winter photo but I am putting it here to give you an idea of the mainland-like landscape diversity.

All of Crete needs a minimum of two weeks but you can just explore half the island in a week minimum. I don't have a specific route for this, just google the attractions of the main four regions (Chania - Rethymnon - Heraklion - Lasithi) and choose your base(s) according to your taste, how much time you have and how much you want to explore.

I believe both plans are very good for what you ask because a combo of more mainland or more and bigger islands is definitely not doable during the normal length of a summer vacation. Remember, I have more details about the Peloponnese route in the link above.
