There was a Greek guy in the military that went to USA for work and some guys were making fun of him because apparently to them, Greeks don't use cars. The Greek obviously decided to play along like yeah unbelievable right? Until some finally realised that he was being sarcastic.

Like Usians go to Greece for vacation obviously to the islands and they think the rest of Greece doesn't have cars?? Don't they visit Athens?? How do these come up with these conclusions even though they are the first country with the largest tourist numbers in Greece.

I doubt these particular Americans have been in many places outside their own country, let alone Greece. It’s a classic case of US centrism, according to such people only USA and 3-4 other countries have cars.

Besides, of course there are cars in the islands too - only a couple Saronic ones which have banned them to not allow a degradation of the natural and architectural environment - so these people have certainly not been in Greece, be it in the islands or elsewhere.

Also actually Americans are not amongst the largest numbers of tourists Greece gets, in fact Greece is now becoming a rising destination for Americans.

Hydra, Saronic Islands, Greece.

For the WIP, I'd love to know about 'The Bargain of Liberty' as that's a great title and the classicist in me is curious about the Pausanias' one, and curious about the cricket ones.

The cricket ones are connected; one is the text and the other is a supporting doc to help me keep track of things.  It’s a long short story, set in the Guau-guau ‘verse, in which Cassian and Jyn and Bodhi play cricket for fun in the park, and end up getting challenged to a real match one weekend by the overweening captain of a local team, Empire Gyms.  Of course they manage to put together a team and battle their way to an unexpected victory.  I’m quite near the end and hoping to be able to post it fairly soon.  I suspect it won’t appeal to all my readers though, because you need to know some cricket terminology and the rules of the game to understand what’s going on!

“Running away with Pausanias” was the tilte of a daily blog I wrote over the course of a month in 2015.  I’d had a fantasy for years of travellling around Greece, retracing the journeys of Pausanias and writing about and drawing the places he visited as they are now.  When I was made redundant from my last office job that year, I decided to treat myself to a month’s travelling, and do at least a little bit of this.  I was able to cover parts of Athens and the easier-to-reach sites of the Saronic Islands and the Argolid (& would love to be able to do more!).  At the time I meant to convert the blog into a travel book, but I’ve never got very far with the project as writing about my own experiences as a narrative felt very strange after years of writing fiction.  I even tried converting the whole thing into 3rd person, to see if I could make it work as a lightly-fictionalised novel instead.  So far it’s dead in the water; but it’s still in the WiP folder.  The blog is still available, if you want to look it up.  And I highly recommend the theme as a way to add a lot of extra interest to a Greek visit.

“The Bargain of Liberty” is an original novel idea, set in Tudor times; one of those “what if magic were real?” historical fantasies.  The basis of the story is imagining that Queen Elizabeth the first of England and Mary, Queen of Scots, met in 1568 when Mary fled from Scotland.  They fell in love, and appealed to the great astrologer and magician Dr John Dee to find a way for them to be able to marry.  Dr Dee consulted his books of magic and found a way to strike a great bargain with an otherworldly spirit; provided the same freedoms were to be granted to all the people of the island of Albion (mainland Britain), then the spirit would make it so. 

The main story is set 20 years later.  The Two Queens have ruled in peace and propserity, over a very different Tudor Britain than the one in our history; a land where gender roles are barely relevant and are considered an embarrassing memory, and where freedom of sexuality, gender identity and religion are the norm.  Also, the existance of magic, and the periodic interventions of spirits like the one Dr Dee worked with, have led to a very different balance of power across the whole world.  To many people, Albion’s freedoms, and the Great Bargain of Liberty that created them, are admirable.  But other, more reactionary, forces look on Albion as a land of corruption and sin, and long to see the Two Queens overthrown and “normal” behaviour enforced.

So I have a very over-the-top fantasy scenario, full of important nuances that need to be explored with care and tact, and a world-wide scale involving multiple different countries and cultures, which also requires a careful approach; and a story about spies and wars and heroics and the Tudor theatre, and Chrisopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway in a polyamourous relationship, and assorted OCs, all having adventures, and the future King James the 6th-and-1st as a rowdy young man who wants to be an actor, and diplomacy involving alliances and power struggles with west African and central American kingdoms and their respective tutelary spirits and types of magic, and of course the Spanish Armada, and the Inquisition (who are the Bad Guys).  It’s all a bit of a handful and I’m not sure I can pull it off to be honest!  But I still love the basic idea, and from time to time I have a little nibble at it.

Hi! My partner and I want to plan a trip to Greece and see as much culture and historical locations as possible! Could you suggest a route/order to visit the islands and the mainland please?

Okay, so bullet points are:

priority to culture and historical locations

a combo of mainland & islands

The phrasing is a little vague so I have to give you a fair warning that you can only combine a certain mainland region with a few islands nearby. And a plan like that needs 2 weeks minimum unless of course you adjust it to going to one island or visiting only one prefecture from a mainland region which still needs a week.

I can think of these feasible combos:

Peloponnese + Cruise in the Saronic islands

Sterea Hellas + Cruise in the Saronic islands

Sterea Hellas + one MAX two from the Cyclades islands

Thessaly + one of the Sporades islands

Epirus + one of the Heptanese islands

Epirus + a Paxi - Antipaxi islands day cruise

You can find numerous historical locations everywhere around Greece but in order to make your life easier, choose the first one or a BONUS plan I will mention last.

Peloponnese is the southernmost region of the Greek mainland. It is probably the region most packed with history. It probably has the most archaeological sites (although these are everywhere), it has the most important Byzantine monuments of the south and, on the top, it is the most important region of Modern Greek history (in short, it has Mycenaean Greek settlements, the ancient grounds of the Olympic Games, the best preserved ancient Theatre, the ruins of Sparta, three Byzantine Cities, Venetian castles and fortresses, countless war museums and houses / museums of the Heroes of the Independence War, the first capital of Greece and more). This is combined with great natural beauty. The coastline of the Peloponnese has many great beaches and the heart of the region is mountainous and full of old traditional villages which retain their historical character. From Nafplion (the aforementioned first capital) you can take a cruise or stay in the Saronic Islands that are very close (i.e Hydra, Poros, Spetses, Aegina etc). A tight trip can be done in 10 days, full immersion and chilling needs more.

I am gonna recommend an alternative "clever" plan. You want history and mainland / islands. So why don't you just go to Crete?

Crete is a massive island, one of the biggest islands in the Mediterranean. It is home of the Minoan Civilization which precedes the Mycenaean and it has remarkably reserved archaeological sites. It also has a few of the best Archaeological Museums of Greece, numerous Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman monuments. It has some of the prettiest towns and the third largest city of Greece, Heraklion (BTW Greeks, I heard Patras downsized?!?!?!?!). Crete is one of the most traditional regions in Greece, especially men frequently dress in traditional costumes. They have their own dialect of Greek and the Cretan diet is often voted the healthiest cuisine in the world. Their food and alcoholic beverages are to die for.

Crete is so big that you think you are in the mainland. You need your own car to explore. It has some of the best beaches of the country. The landscape diversity is the best part though. Crete has the only natural palm forest of Europe, it has endemic wildlife, many attractions of natural beauty like the Samaria gorge and a super rugged terrain (roads are a toughie, ye be warned). In fact, Crete has two amongst the 10 highest mountain ranges in Greece which help create this dramatic landscape (it has ski resorts for the winter).

And if you think you are missing out on the "Island hopping" there are many small islands around Crete that you can visit daily (like Chrissi and Elafonissi with their world-class beaches, Spinalonga for history because it was a leper colony and the very special beautiful Gavdos which is the southernmost region of Europe).

Okay this is obviously a winter photo but I am putting it here to give you an idea of the mainland-like landscape diversity.

All of Crete needs a minimum of two weeks but you can just explore half the island in a week minimum. I don't have a specific route for this, just google the attractions of the main four regions (Chania - Rethymnon - Heraklion - Lasithi) and choose your base(s) according to your taste, how much time you have and how much you want to explore.

I believe both plans are very good for what you ask because a combo of more mainland or more and bigger islands is definitely not doable during the normal length of a summer vacation. Remember, I have more details about the Peloponnese route in the link above.

An Opportunity to Visit Greece for Upper Iowa Students

Have you ever dreamed of going to Greece? If so, you are in luck! Here is your chance to embark on a journey to Greece through Upper Iowa Universities' study abroad program. 

The trip will take place in May of 2023, starting May 15th to the 23rd. NiCole Dennler, the professor behind the expedition, says, "This is the trip of a lifetime." 

Dennler organized this trip in the best interest of the Upper Iowa University students. Though this trip is catered to UIU students, anyone can attend. 

Family and friends of the student can sign up to come along and explore Greece. 

Travel expenses, hotel stays, and a few meals are all covered in a one-time initial payment. Additional expenses during the trip will be the traveler's responsibility. 

Those who attend this trip will visit 19 different areas of Greece. The areas to be explored include Athens, Plaka District, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Olympic Stadium, Syntagma Square, Acropolis, Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike, Acropolis Museum, Saronic Islands, Aegina, Columned Ruins of the Temple of Aphaia, Poros and Clocktower, Hydra, Argolida region, Epidaurus, Mycenae, Olympia, and Delphi.

"This trip is a great opportunity for students who enjoy Greek mythology," Dennler said. 

Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Greek culture while learning about the country's history. 

"The great thing about the trip is we will be accompanied by a faculty member who is a native of Greece," said Dennler. 

Throughout the nine-day trip, attendees will follow a list of scheduled events. One opportunity will be to take a boat ride from island to island while enjoying breathtaking views.

Education will be accompanied by Greek cuisine and thought-provoking conversations about the culture. 

Dr. Panagiotis Markopoulos, a Greece native and member of the Upper Iowa University staff, says, "The hospitality and cuisine alone is enough to visit Greece." 

The country has a comfortable environment fit for anyone. There is also plenty of historical facts that students may want to study. 

"Greece is also the founding country of Democracy, the cradle of civilization, science, and medicine," Markopoulos said.

Students will have the chance to learn more about the trip with information sessions in September. Those dates include September 20th at 6:30 p.m., September 28th at 2 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. More details on the informational sessions, including location, will be announced later.
