"Sith" and "Screecher's Reach" both show that it is in fact perfectly possible to do stories from a Sith perspective without bashing the Jedi. It is in fact possible to tell a story about a Sith character without even having to INCLUDE the Jedi in it and simply focus on the Sith characters and their journeys. It's even possible to have a multitude of different stories told about Sith without ever touching on the Jedi AT ALL.

"Sith" tells the story of someone who's left that life behind and the triumph she has when she finally is willing to acknowledge her own darkness and control it. "Screecher's Reach" tells the story of a legacy of pain and abuse passed down from Master to apprentice and how the Sith expertly take advantage of other people's fears to twist them into monsters. One ends hopefully, the other is a pyrrhic victory. They're totally different genres with entirely different endings.

And neither one felt the need to criticize the Jedi "from the Sith's perspective" in order to tell a compelling Sith story. Imagine that.

God Visions is so good. I'm only two episodes into it and it's just... so beautiful.

Because in a lot of ways, it's NOT Star Wars. Like by the most technical metric, it's not Star Wars. It isn't trying to follow the Skywalker Saga, it doesn't have to fit into the lore, it's not adding anything to the worldbuilding or history. It's not Star Wars. It's a bunch of really incredible short stories that are allowed to use Star Wars style trappings and aesthetics.

Which is honestly a really relaxing thing to have. I don't have to think about how this is going to impact stories down the line. I don't have to wonder what this is trying to say about characters I love. I don't have to worry about any kind of retcons or continuity errors. It doesn't matter! I can just sit back and enjoy the pew pew stories with the laser swords in some of the most gorgeous animation on this planet.

And it was released on Star Wars day. It's such a perfect thing to release on Star Wars day. Because I feel like nothing truly encapsulates love for Star Wars like these Visions episodes. These people are allowed to just REVEL in what makes Star Wars FUN without being weighed down by the baggage this franchise tends to bring with it. There's no lore or history holding them back, no fan service obligations forced upon them by the studio. It's just Star Wars distilled into its purest form, allowed to just BE, possibly for the first time since 1977.

The wood of Mike's bed creaks as he sits himself upright.

“I’m not gonna lose you again,” he says, his voice again now just above a whisper .

“You didn’t lose me.”

“I did.” God. Mike really doesn’t want to cry again. Him waking Will in this state had been embarrassing enough. “Not for long, but Will.. I lost you. And I don’t ever, ever again want to feel the way I did when I thought I’d have to live the rest of my life and never see your face again,” he swallows.

Will’s expression softens. He opens and closes his mouth a few times, but nothing comes out.

They sit in silence for a while, both of their gazes fixed on whatever’s in front of them, and nothing but the subtle sound of the clock ticking on the other side of Mike’s room.

Say something, damn it.

Mike finally breaks the silence. “I’m sorry Will, I’m– I didn’t mean to—”

“No, stop.” Will’s eyes don’t meet Mike’s. “I know. It’s not an easy decision. But I- I trust myself. And I trust El. We’re prepared. You don’t need to worry about me, okay?”

Mike digs the heels of his palms into his eyes, breathing deeply as he attempts to calm his mind before he has a literal heart attack. Will shuffles closer, the bed creaking as he does so, and now Will’s warm fingers are wrapping around Mike’s wrists, pulling his hands away from his eyes.

“Look at me,” Will says. His index finger is hooked under Mike’s chin now, carefully tugging his face in his direction so that Mike’s forced to look at him.

Their eyes meet. “Do you trust me?” Will’s voice has dropped to just below a whisper.

Mike swallows, taking in the current effortlessly captivating sight of his best friend, who’s totally not what couldn’t be more than 3 inches from his face right now.

The way the moonlight seeping through the window illuminates his face, highlighting the slope of his nose, the curve of his jaw, the way his long lashes cast a shadow on his cheekbones, the tiny, barely visible blemishes that scatter along his skin, that you would only be able to see if you were this close.

His hair is messy, a bit overgrown and sticking up every which way from the tossing and turning Mike knows he’s been doing all night.

And Jesus, Mike wants to– no, he needs to kiss him. He’s currently doing everything in his power, using the last of the self control he has left in his body right now not to lean in and capture Will’s lips in his own.

“Yes,” Mike responds, but the word barely passes his lips. He might as well have not said it in the first place.

A beat passes, Will’s hand sort of lingering there, and Mike swears he sees Will’s eyes glance somewhere below his nose for a split second, and then—

“You’re so beautiful."

i was Today years old when i discovered that Star Wars Visions has nice little behind-the-scenes/making-of videos for each of its episodes. they're only 5-10 minutes each, but they're so fascinating!!

the Volume 2 ones in particular are really interesting, because they talk a lot about the episode's specific cultural influences.

"The Pit" is arguably the most heavy-handed story in both volumes of Visions (which is saying something given how black and white Star Wars tends to be and how much the studios tend to stick to that), but with the oversaturation of "gray morality" in Star Wars these days, it's actually kind-of nice to have a simple wish fulfillment story where the citizens just shove aside the bad guys without hesitation in order to go help a bunch of innocent people who need help. I'd love MORE stories in Star Wars where regular people are asked to "follow their light" and be their best selves and then they DO.

Finished Visions Volume 2 and I can't believe how good it is, like it's honestly allowing me to feel good about Star Wars again for the first time since probably Andor. The animation is BEAUTIFUL, I love how many different styles we got and how each one really felt like it fit the story they were telling! The stories were so unique and interesting and compelling! I'm SO glad that they came up with this idea and are really allowing these little short stories to shine and to shine a light on animation AROUND THE WORLD and the kinds of stories you get when you broaden your horizons a little.

First part of the comic is finally done! I chose this scene because I know the donghua/manhua will almost certainly censor it and also I feel like there's a lot of beautiful but also inaccurate depictions of this kiss and I just wanna do the full scene justice, including Xie Lian's reaction on the beach. I'm trying to stay as close to the novel as possible but some dialogue will be slightly altered to fit the flow of the comic. I should have planned it to be more vertically oriented to fit tumblr better but hell I don't actually know anything about making comics.

CW for those who don't know where this is going: The next part of this comic includes relatively non-consensual kissing. The purpose is the exchange of air & to keep the smoke spirit from entering, but Xie Lian does struggle against it in the beginning. If this might trigger or upset you, don't read any further.

[2] Xie Lian covered his mouth with his sleeve, coughing nonstop and choked by tears. [3] His mind raced to find another countermeasure. Even after the cloud of black smoke was forcibly vomited out, it still swirled about and relentlessly clung to his body. [4] Xie Lian pushed himself onto the windowsill, raised himself up, and leapt into the lake outside. [5, 6] With a splash, Xie Lian plunged deep into the heart of the lake. [7] He held his breath, crossed his arms and legs, and assumed a meditative position, letting his body slowly sink to the bottom of that freezing lake. Once his heartbeat returned to normal, he looked up and could somewhat make out the black fog swirling above, blocking off the surface of the water. [8] Once he emerged, he'd have to gasp in a deep breath, and in doing so, he would surely suck the child spirit into his stomach. [9] A grown man with a fulsome baby bump wasn't the least bit funny to imagine. [10] However, his leap into the water had only been meant to give himself some time to think. It didn't take long for Xie Lian to come up with a counterattack. [11] So what if I swallow it? I'll just swallow Fangxin right after. [12] He'd learned that trick when performing on the streets. [13] Although it might hurt, whatever -- as long as the child spirit could be captured. [14] With his mind thus made up, Xie Lian released his arms and started swimming upward. [15, 16] A muffled sound of sloshing water came from above, and suddenly a vast expanse of burning, vivid crimson red flooded his vision. [17] A tangle of winding raven-black locks obscured his sight, though nothing could be seen through the splashing water and schools of air bubbles.

It was a bright day , a day of relaxation. Everyone on the Sunny took this opportunity to take a break and enjoy themselves. Rather it be playing tag on the deck , listening to Brook play some beautiful tunes , or even just reading / tending to the garden. Everyone was being themselves and having fun. It was quite the break from the massive battles they've had recently.

You sat next to Nami , who was tending to her tangerines. Behind you , Robin sat reading her book. You and Nami had been chatting happily for what felt like hours. Robin , though she was reading , listened and observed everything to two of you were saying. She was ever observant , even if she was on break.

"Hey , I'll be back. I'm gonna go see if Sanji would mind making me something to drink." You said , excusing yourself from the 2 women. They nodded and waved to you as your form retreated from their vision.

As you jumped down to the kitchen , you noticed the two who normally fight . . . Well , fighting. The blonde haired cook seemed to be enraged about something while the moss headed swordsman just sarcastically commented back and basically brushed off the cook's complaints.

That swordsman. The very one that lacks a sense of direction in a literal and figurative sense. You felt your heart flutter as your eyes trailed to him. You shook your head and brushed pass them to get into the kitchen.

Though you didn't know it , Zoro's eyes followed you as the door shut behind your body. You walked over to the fridge and stared at all of your selections. As you sighed and closed the fridge , the door to the kitchen reopened. You glanced over to see who was coming in and noticed the cook. Sanji had apparently stopped arguing with Zoro and came to attend to your needs.

"What would you like , Reader ?" He asked with a smile on his face. Even if it was near dinner time , it was clear he didn't mind tending to his crewmates' needs. You smiled back at him and leaned against the counter.

"Are you able to make a drink for me ? I'm not sure exactly what I want yet. Or maybe a snack , if that's not too much to ask for." You trailed off as your mind trailed back to its thoughts.

"Of course. How about a vol - au - vent ?" He asked as he he began to take out the pastry from a sealed container. "I made some earlier for Nami and Robin , but they told me they weren't hungry." He shrugged and placed it on the counter for you.

"Thank you , Sanji." You bowed your head lightly and took one of the treats from the tray. You resealed the container and walked out of the kitchen.

Somewhere in the time that you had been inside , your ship had landed on an island. You looked at the gorgeous tree filled island in awe. It was lush with fresh vegetation and had many beautiful flowers. You've seen many different islands in the New World , but this had to be one of the nicer ones.

"Alright. I want Chopper , Usopp , and . . sadly . . . Luffy . . To go into town. Robin , I'd like you to go with them. We need you 4 to pick up some herbs for me and Chopper. Sanji , I want you and Brook to go stock up on food supplies. And Franky , you go get materials to repair the ship and for whatever else." Nami directed , pointing those people in the directions they were supposed to go. As she spoke , the groups filed out so they could get their job done as quickly as possible. It was hard to tell if it was because they wanted to go back to the sea or if they didn't wanna see Nami angry. Most likely the latter , you thought.

"What about me and Zoro ?" You questioned as you took a final bite of the tasty hollow treat Sanji had made. "I want you 2 to watch the ship. I'm going onto the island to chart it." She responded , picking up some paper and pens. Before either of you could say anything , she walked off of the ship.

You stood there , staring at the place the ginger once was. You blinked and turned your attention to Zoro , who seemed to be in the same boat as you. You wouldn't admit it , but you were happy to be alone with him.

You stood there , collecting your thoughts. While you stood like a statue , the Swordsman went off to work out. You shook your head violently and whipped your head around to find him. There he was , in all his muscular glory , at the end of the ship with a comically large weight in his hands. He had his coat discarded and he was thrusting the weight forwards and back onto his shoulder in a slicing like motion.

You couldn't help but stare. Everything about how he just so calmly lifted what you assumed to be over 400ibs surprised you. Instead of staring , you decided to go into the crows nest to keep a lookout for any enemies or your crewmates.

A few hours had passed by without either of you speaking to one another. The ship was in a comfortable silence , engulfing the both of you as you did separate things. You were bored sitting by yourself , if you were being honest. You were often fidgety and lost in thought instead of looking out. Of course , observation haki helped out with sensing living things but you didn't use it often.

Just as you were about to take a nap , you noticed a bag bobbing around the Sunny. You narrowed your eyes to see who it was and didn't see anyone. That was until you saw Luffy and Robin. You assumed it was either Chopper or Usopp. You smiled softly and walked down from your previous place.

You watched as the lump ran up to you. "Reader ! I got you something ! I thought it was your favorite color." The little reindeer doctor said excitedly as he ran up to you. He handed you a bag that was pink. Not your favorite color , but you liked his thought.

"I appreciate your gesture , Chopper. My favorite color isn't pink , though." You responded , putting the bag on your right side. You could definitely put your weapons and stuff in it. "Oh ! What's your favorite color then ?" He tilted his head with an adorable look on his face.

"Green , actually. I'd say a minty - moss green ? It's just really nice , in my opinion." You explained with a smile on your [shape] face. You heard a noise of surprise behind you and you turned. You didn't expect to have your [color] colored eyes meet with one brown one. Your face lit up.

"Greenisaprettycolorididntmeanitlikethat !" You sputtered out , hiding your face from his confusing stare. You couldn't tell if he was mad at you , if you were being honest.

"Green is a nice color , isn't it ?" Zoro mocked , laughing heartily. You were EXTREMELY embarrassed. Though , you didn't notice the red on his cheeks as well.

Chopper and Usopp laughed at your misery. They were even on the floor , about dying at that point. "I just didn't expect you to be into that color of green." He shrugged and smiled smugly at you. He turned and walked away from the 3 of you , cheeks reddening further.

Though you didn't know it , your words stuck in his head. It repeated like a broken record. He didn't understand why , but he liked the thought of it. Maybe his feelings for you grew , but he didn't know that. Maybe he should talk to Robin or Chopper about it. For now , he would sit and think about you. Even at night.

So when Vol 9 was airing, I saved this above gif of Weiss looking at the Rusted Knight. It's short and quick, but I always thought it was an interesting pose they did for her. Like, look at how the rest of her team looks:

Ruby and Yang are surprised with Yang looking a bit more surprised. Blake is beside herself to be meeting another character, which given she's a book lover and had more or less been taking the lead throughout their Ever After journey, it would be more understandable for her to geek out over meeting him. Her stance almost mirrors Weiss' stance but not nearly as much. Her hands are closer to her waist compared to Weiss', which are raised up near her breast.

So what am I implying from this? The Rusted Knight was Weiss' fictional crush growing up.

Think about it. When Weiss was listing off two other characters back in Episode 4 “A Cat Most Curious," she named Lively Carpenter and the Rusted Knight. She described the Carpenter as "sweet" and Rusted Knight as "handsome." Now, one could make the argument that she only referred to each as "one" but I'm going based on the order she had listed them. So let's think about it. She described the Carpenter with a personality trait but described the Knight by a physical attribute. Now, we can assume The Girl Who Fell Through the World is like its real-world counterparts, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and that it has illustrations. Yet I don't think the Jaune was ever illustrated since, while the girls might not have recognized him prior to meeting him, they might have years later since they IMMEDIATELY recognized him upon meeting in the Ever After. Oh the Rusted Knight most certainly would have been drawn, just not Jaune. So Weiss describing him as handsome is something she had to take the word of from the author and believed. I wonder if she ever imagined what he looked like under the armor? Did she have her own vision of him?

You know, we learned back in Volume 2's “Extracurricular” that Weiss has been pursued by suitors because of her last name, similar to her father marrying her mother. I no doubt believe that's why Weiss is picky about dating, and why she was so disinterested in Jaune's attempts. She saw how her father treated her mother, and vehemently does NOT want that for her life. I think, though, she may also be slightly swayed by her crush on the Rusted Knight. He was described as handsome by Lewis and didn't seem to be painted in a bad light. Maybe his depiction of a good, honest man influenced her taste. It's all just head canons, but an interview with Weiss' VA Kara a major White Knight supporter said that Weiss' type is someone who is mature and stepping up for other people. Is it possible some of this came from the Rusted Knight? He was much older than Alyx and Lewis, and since he hailed from Remnant, he wasn't zany like the Ever Afterans, making him mature. Also, he was helpful and was almost like a guide for the group up until Alyx poisoned him. That could be seen as him stepping up, especially since many of the Ever Afterans, while not evil, may not have been as helpful as him or the Cat who was just using the two humans to get out of the Ever After.

I'm going to stop there because I didn't mean for this to get out of hand. I was intending to just post this gif and do a quick little "hehe, look who has a crush" and somehow that spiraled out of control.

Anyway, Vol 9 has been over for a while, Weiss and Jaune have grown emotionally and in their relationship, and I'm curious to see what will come now that RWBY's moving to Viz Media.
