Trivandrum, Kerala – National UN Volunteers-India is proud to announce the successful organization of a Vishu New Year celebration awareness program held at the Yuvajana Samajam Grandhashaala Library in Poojappura, Trivandrum. The event was spearheaded by our dedicated UN Volunteer, Mr. Deepu R S, who took the initiative to enlighten the local children about the cultural significance of Vishu.

Vishu, marking the astronomical new year day, is a festival that heralds the beginning of the spring season. It is a day filled with joy, hope, and prosperity, symbolized by the 'Vishukkani' – the first sight upon waking up on the Vishu morning. The children were given a comprehensive introduction to the historical and mythological aspects of the celebration, emphasizing the importance of cultural heritage and traditions.

The event also included interactive sessions where children engaged in traditional activities and learned about the customs associated with Vishu, such as the preparation of the auspicious 'Vishukkani', the wearing of new clothes ('Puthukodi'), and the exchange of 'Vishu Kaineettam' – tokens of good luck and blessings.

Mr. Deepu R S expressed his gratitude towards the library secretary for providing the opportunity to interact with the school children and for supporting the initiative to keep our traditions alive among the younger generation.

National UN Volunteers-India remains committed to cultural education and awareness, and we look forward to organizing more such events that celebrate our rich heritage.

Today is Vishu. Contrary to the notion Vishu is not Malayali New Year . Malayali New year is in the month of Chingam which happens in August - September where Onam steals the thunder. Vishu is the astrological new year for Hindus in Kerala. True to the tradition , today started with mom waking me up and closing my eyes with her hands and leading me up to the Pooja room to make me view the Vishukkani which we believe will bring you happiness and prosperity for the rest of the year . Vishukkani typically includes the Kani konna flower ( amaltaus ), seasonal produce , gold , clothes and ofcourse Lord Krishna .The only wish I had this year though was to make Corona go away & din some sense into covidiots! This is one festival ,kids get excited about because you get money from the elders. No wonder, it had been my favourite festival. Well the tables have turned for some years now in my case. This year though I won't be meeting my nephews & nieces, instead my kaineetam is for a bunch of students & families in Tughlaqabad, Delhi who are struggling to meet ends. Coming to food, our family tradition is that we make this delicious vegan breakfast of idlis, rasa vada and Bonda Koottu curry. Rasa vada is dal vada soaked in rasam. Bonda Koottu curry is urad dal fried dumplings and potatoes in a delicately spiced coconut milk curry . Now one of those rare instances where potatoes are used in a dish of ours. Unlike the rest of India, potatoes are used very sparingly in Kerala cuisine. There are families who make a Sadya too but that is something we do only for onam or birthday.
