Derek Boshier (British, 1937-2024)
'There’s a funny sort of feeling you get, as if change is a sin. But now I see that’s what I’m about, I’m an artist that does change.’
Born in Portsmouth in 1937 Derek Boshier first came to prominence with his paintings as a student at the Royal College of Art in London where he studied alongside David Hockney, Allen Jones, R.B. Kitaj, and others. Embracing the iconography of British and American mass culture, his paintings earned him recognition as one of the pioneers of British Pop Art. In 1962, he was featured with Peter Blake, Pauline Boty and Peter Phillips in Ken Russell's BBC documentary 'Pop Goes The Easel'. Subsequently he has used other media:drawing, printmaking, film, books, three dimensional objects, installations and photography among them. His graphic work with popular music groups such as The Clash and with David Bowie have brought his work to a wider audience.
Works by Derek Boshier can be found in major museum collections including Tate, The British Museum and the V&A. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
'Derek Boshier brought to British Pop a strong satirical edge which distinguished his work from that of his fellow students at the Royal College of Art. His paintings of 1961-62 made frequent reference to current events, especially those with a political dimension such as the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Consumer products such as Pepsi-Cola appeared not in celebration of modern popular culture but as evidence of the insidious inroads of international businesses and Americanisation. SA group of paintings in 1962 prompted by the campaign for a new striped toothpaste examined manipulative forces of advertising and the loss of individual identity that this brought in it’s wake. Boshier’s caustic views about the mass media, and his characteristic ‘custom-built men’ – figures that appear to be cut out, pieced together as in jig-saw puzzle or in the process of disintegration – arose directly from his reading of commentators such as Marshall McLuhan, Vance Packard and John Kenneth Galbraith. Boshier’s Pop phase was short lived. The paintings that he produced in India during 1962-63, virtually all of which were accidentally destroyed near the end of his stay there, adapted similar narrative devices to Hindu symbolism. On his return to England he painted briefly in a formal abstract idiom before turning to Minimalist sculpture and later photography, film and collage. Always curious to experiment different media, he nevertheless maintained a strong involvement through the seventies with political and social themes. In 1979 he returned to painting as his prime activity, at first basing the pictures on images from advertising and the mass media, as he had done in his early Pop pictures and in his more recent collages. In 1980 he moved to Huston, Texas, where he at once found a rich fund of new imagery in his immediate environment. A series of paintings depicting naked cowboys were amongst his most amusing and memorable responses to his new home. During the whole of that decade, prior to his return to England, he elaborated his new iconography with humour and affection but also with the distance and wry observations of a foreigner. The American themes of Boshier’s first phase as a Pop artist thus reappeared 2 decades later in a new guise, coloured by personal experience. In the late nineties Boshier again resettled in the US, this time in Los Angeles, where he made paintings that took up themes and images from his formative Pop works.'

How Museum Design Firms Enhance Visitor Interaction Experience
Museum design firms play a crucial role in enhancing the visitor interaction experience, breathing new life into the way people engage with art, history, and cultural exhibits. Armed with visionary ideas and cutting-edge technologies, these companies are transforming traditional museum experiences into awe-inspiring journeys of discovery.
Harnessing the power of interactive displays and installations, museum exhibit design companies have shattered the barriers of passive observation. Through touchscreens, gesture recognition, and augmented reality (AR), visitors now actively engage with exhibits, unraveling hidden layers and unlocking a world of knowledge at their fingertips.
No longer confined to static artifacts, they can delve deeper, zooming in on intricate details, accessing additional information, and even stimulating virtual objects, making personal connections with the subject matter like never before.
Implementing Advanced Techniques to Enhance Visitor Experience
Furthermore, the best museum design companies, such as Tagbin, focus on creating dynamic and multisensory environments. They employ techniques such as lighting, sound design, and spatial arrangements to evoke emotional responses and heighten the overall visitor experience. From carefully designed lighting that accentuates artworks to immersive audiovisual installations that transport visitors to different eras, these elements contribute to a more engaging and memorable visit.
In their quest for inclusivity, museum design firms leverage technology to break down barriers. They integrate features such as audio guides, sign language interpretation, and tactile exhibits to cater to diverse audiences, including those with visual or hearing impairments. By providing multiple entry points and accommodating different learning styles, these companies ensure that all visitors can actively participate and connect with the exhibits.
How is Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya a Perfect Example of a Visitor-centric Museum?
The Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, designed and executed by Tagbin, one of the best museum design companies in Delhi, stands as a shining example of a visitor-centric museum, redefining the way visitors engage with exhibits and creating a truly immersive experience. This museum has employed a range of techniques and technologies that place visitors at the heart of the museum, allowing them to actively participate, play, and learn.
Tumblr media
By integrating cutting-edge technologies like Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Robotics, the museum's ‘Anubhuti Engagement Zone’ has revolutionized visitor interaction.

Emphasizing the AT Psychological Theory - A Powerful Framework to Design AI-based Smart Museum
The AT (Affective-Transactional) Psychological Theory holds quite a lot of relevance in the context of creating meaningful and impactful museum experiences. By understanding the intricate interplay between emotions, cognition, and behavior, museum design firms can harness the power of this theory to craft exhibits and environments that elicit strong emotional responses, engage visitors on a deeper level, and leave a lasting impression.
Applying the AT Psychological Theory in museum design involves considering the emotional impact of exhibits and the overall museum environment. By strategically incorporating elements that evoke specific emotions, designers can create immersive and memorable experiences. Whether it's the use of lighting, sound, visual displays, or interactive elements, the goal is to elicit emotional responses that resonate with visitors, triggering curiosity, awe, empathy, or joy.
Final Words
Well, there is certainly no denying that museum exhibit design companies are the catalysts behind a revolution in visitor interaction. With their unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and their relentless pursuit of innovation, they have paved the way for unforgettable museum experiences that inspire, educate, and leave an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who enter their transformative realms.

Braille puzzles to tactile paintings: this Chennai art exhibition has an inclusive display - The Hindu
Tumblr media
Tactile tigers, sculptures that sign, and a Braille puzzle on a canvas.
At Apparao Gallery today, accessibility leads the conversation, for artworks - some interactive - by 10 artists with disabilities that occupy the otherwise conventional gallery space that Chennai’s collectors frequent. An abstract, panelled work and realistic portraits of the national animal of India, complemented by an experimental series of acrylic flora that spills over canvas frames, kickstart the display that do not follow a narrative per se. Mediums are aplenty - from acrylics and clay to paper and cloth make an appearance through canvases that hope to catch the collector’s eye. Dubbed a sensory art exhibit, the display hopes to cater to senses other than just sight and in essence advocates inclusivity even from a viewer’s perspective.
The artists who mostly hail from Chennai and Tamil Nadu are part of Kai Rassi, a not-for-profit organisation that leads vocational art programmes and creates inclusive spaces for artists with disabilities. And this marks their fourth formal exhibition. As the display opens, each of them stands guard next to their respective artworks, eager to fill the audience in on their idea behind each concept, while busy interacting with fellow artists who they share space with. For founders Divya Rao, Kadambari Narendran and Indira Reddy, the display is meant to be more than just ‘disability-driven’. Divya says, “Then, the buyer who comes in is not looking for anything more than just donating money. We wanted to change that. We wanted to make them aware that they are also getting something beautiful in return.” The idea is to make galleries want to collaborate with each of the artists in an individual capacity.
Midway, a series of 11 clay sculptures fashioned by students from the Mary Clubwala Jadhav School for the hearing impaired, makes for an interesting break in the narrative. They make one pause, and pay attention. Each sculpture is a hand mould with the imprint of each students’ hand. They depict letters from the American and Indian sign language, paired with pictures of students signing them, and read “We are Hear”: a witty take on the very disability that ostracises them. Visual artist Shreya Chajjed who led this particular project says, “They were really excited about the medium, and went about it very smartly. We rehearsed with them before making the final models.”
The showstopper perhaps is the work by UK-based, partially-blind artist Clarke Reynold, accompanied by leaflets with patterns that denote each alphabet. The viewer can use this leaflet as reference to interpret the words on the canvas. The takeaway is the message. The collaborative work is put together through a virtual workshop with students from Lady Andal IB, Yein Udaan and girls from Prem Vihar.
One of the works on display | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement
Aishwarya is elated. The hearing and speech-impaired artist, who specialises in many mediums of painting, has worked with fine paper-cutting this time. The delicate, concentric circles which are sometimes embellished with gilded paper, takes her nothing less than a week of work. As for Lokesh whose penchant for animal forms has been established through his acrylic works, made signs to the interpreter who translates, “The national animal of India has always fascinated me. Sometimes, I see photographs of these big cats and try to trace them onto canvas.” He points to a black-and-white series of canvases with bulls in motion and says, “But when I think of Tamil Nadu, bulls come to mind.” He is hearing-impaired.
For Anthony, who has been a carpentry and art teacher for the past 34 years with a special school in the city, art equals functionality. The unusual canvas frames on which acrylic paintings of flora spill out, came out of the need to be unique. “I wanted to do something that is a little different, which will look good in a home,” he says.  He had polio as a three-month old baby. An independent artist, he strives to remove the stigma around people with physical and intellectual disabilities.
Betsy’s acrylic works speak of minute skill. Serpentine shadows fall on a path laden with trees. A tactile version of the work, by Access for All, accompanies the frame. Pavithra’s abstract series is a study on gradation of colours, blue being her muse. Siva’s line drawings on the other hand have already gained him a good following and recognition, says Divya.
The display will be on till April 2 at Apparao Gallery, Nungambakkam

CALIGRAPHIC POETICS OF ASÉMIC WRITING
                                                         por Tchello d’Barros*
“Asemic writing seems to be a gigantic, unexplored territory.”
                                                                                                                                                    Tim Gaze
The exhibition “ESCRIBAS – 1st International Exhibition of Asémic Writing” presents a collection of works in images with abstract spellings, in the language that is becoming known as Asémic Writing. The set, made up of creations from different parts of the planet, also reveals the plurality of techniques and resources for the realization of these works, transiting between calligraphy, abstraction, engraving and even Visual Poetry.
This show promoted by Instituto Imersão Latina in partnership with The Virtual Museum of Visual Poetry, features 26 works by artists from 18 countries in the V Beagá Psiu Poético program, setting up the first international collective exhibition of this modality held in Brazil.
Spontaneously arising in different cultures throughout history, consolidated as an artistic language at the end of the 20th century, the Asémic Writing still very rare, has been gaining visibility, whether with exhibitions, publications, epistemological studies or placement on the Internet. This hybrid art, which transits between word and image, survived the typographic tsunami of the digital age, privileging handwriting (mainly), albeit abstract, as an expressive manifestation.
The works are made up of often invented letters, words that keep calligraphic remnants, sentence fragments that form thought-provoking abstract figures, configuring every movement that has thickened its network of supporters on all continents. It is an art free of academic labels, institutional immobilization and shallow public cultural policies for the promotion, collection and dissemination of experimental languages. Drawing, painting, infogravure, collages, digital art, interventions and photographs are just some of the resources present in this type of creations, presented here from a perspective of diversity of styles.
It is said of the works of Asémic Writing, which are purposely emptied of meaning – because they are absent of enunciation or message – which does not prevent them from making sense, from the perception of those who observe, since there is a silent dialogue between such contents and the entire lexical and imagery framework of those who immerse themselves in viewing these images.
Theorists of Art in Expanded Field or Expanded Poetry, usually place Asémic Writing in the broad scope of Experimental Poetry. So, provoking reflections on the poetic phenomenon in aspects that strain the limits of language, questioning aesthetic aspects of the hybridity characteristic of contemporary art and provoke the debate about where the compass of poetic making points in our time, are some of the premises that guided the curatorial process for this show.
*Tchello d’Barros is writer, visual artist and curador.

The Role of Digital Media in India's Travel Exhibitions
In recent years, digital media has revolutionized how businesses, consumers, and travelers interact, and this transformation has been particularly evident in the realm of travel exhibitions. In India, events like the India International Travel Mart Ahmedabad (IITM) have been at the forefront of integrating digital media into their platforms, redefining how these exhibitions operate and how they engage with audiences.
The Rise of Digital Media in Travel Exhibitions
Digital media encompasses a wide range of tools, including social media, online advertising, websites, mobile applications, and virtual reality experiences. For travel exhibitions in India, these tools have opened up new avenues for marketing, networking, and enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Historically, travel exhibitions relied heavily on physical brochures, face-to-face interactions, and traditional advertising methods. While these elements still play a role, the integration of digital media has expanded the reach and impact of these events. With India being one of the largest and fastest-growing markets for travel, the role of digital media in exhibitions like IITM has become more crucial than ever.
Enhancing Visibility and Engagement
One of the most significant contributions of digital media to travel exhibitions is the enhancement of visibility and engagement. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter allow event organizers to reach a broader audience by creating and sharing content that resonates with potential visitors. In the case of IITM, digital campaigns can promote the event months in advance, generating excitement and anticipation among travelers, industry professionals, and tourism boards.
Social media platforms also facilitate real-time engagement during the exhibitions. Live streaming of events, behind-the-scenes content, and interactive polls can keep the audience engaged, even if they are not physically present. This engagement not only boosts the event’s popularity but also creates a sense of community among attendees.
Moreover, the use of digital media extends beyond the event itself. Post-event content, such as highlights, interviews, and testimonials, can be shared online to maintain the momentum and keep the audience engaged until the next exhibition. This continuous engagement is essential for building a loyal following and establishing the exhibition as a must-attend event in the industry.
Personalization and Targeted Marketing
Another critical advantage of digital media is the ability to personalize and target marketing efforts. With tools like Google Analytics and social media insights, travel exhibitions can gather data on user behavior, preferences, and demographics. This data allows event organizers to create targeted campaigns that speak directly to the needs and interests of different audience segments.
For instance, IITM can tailor its digital marketing strategies to attract specific groups, such as adventure travelers, luxury tourists, or cultural enthusiasts. By delivering personalized content, the exhibition can increase its relevance to potential visitors, ultimately driving higher attendance and participation.
Targeted marketing also helps exhibitors connect with the right audience. Travel companies, hotels, and tourism boards participating in IITM can leverage digital media to promote their offerings to specific market segments, increasing the chances of meaningful connections and business opportunities.
Virtual Reality and Immersive Experiences
One of the most exciting developments in the intersection of digital media and travel expo's is the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). These technologies offer immersive experiences that can transport visitors to different destinations without leaving the exhibition hall.
At IITM, for example, exhibitors can use VR to give potential travelers a virtual tour of their destinations. Whether it’s a walk through the bustling streets of Tokyo or a serene beach in the Maldives, these immersive experiences can inspire visitors and give them a taste of what they can expect.
Additionally, VR and AR can be used to create interactive exhibits that engage visitors in new and innovative ways. These technologies not only enhance the visitor experience but also provide a unique selling point for exhibitors, making their booths stand out in a crowded exhibition space.
Facilitating Networking and Business Opportunities
Digital media has also transformed how networking and business opportunities are facilitated at travel exhibitions. Platforms like LinkedIn and event-specific apps enable exhibitors and attendees to connect before, during, and after the event. These platforms provide opportunities for networking, setting up meetings, and sharing contact information, making it easier for industry professionals to establish and maintain relationships.
In the context of IITM, digital tools can help streamline the matchmaking process between buyers and sellers. Exhibitors can use these platforms to showcase their products and services, while buyers can browse offerings and set up appointments with exhibitors who meet their needs. This level of connectivity enhances the efficiency of the exhibition and increases the chances of successful business deals.
Challenges and Future Directions
While digital media offers numerous benefits to travel exhibitions, it also presents challenges. The rapid pace of technological change means that event organizers must continually adapt to new tools and platforms. Additionally, the reliance on digital media requires a robust infrastructure, including reliable internet connectivity and digital literacy among participants.
Looking ahead, the role of digital media in travel exhibitions is likely to grow even further. The continued evolution of VR and AR, the increasing importance of data analytics, and the rise of new social media platforms will all shape the future of events like IITM. As these technologies develop, they will provide even more opportunities for engagement, personalization, and innovation in the travel exhibition space.
Conclusion
In conclusion, digital media has become an integral part of India’s travel exhibition's, particularly at events like IITM. By enhancing visibility, engagement, personalization, and networking opportunities, digital media has transformed how these exhibitions operate and interact with their audiences. As technology continues to evolve, the role of digital media in travel exhibitions will only become more significant, offering exciting possibilities for the future of the industry.

The Evolution of Travel Exhibitions in India
Travel exhibitions in India have undergone significant transformation over the past few decades, evolving from simple trade shows into dynamic platforms that bring together industry professionals, government agencies, and travelers. These exhibitions have become essential for promoting tourism, fostering cultural exchange, and driving economic growth. Among the most prominent of these events is the India International Travel Mart Ahmedabad (IITM), which has played a crucial role in shaping the travel exhibition landscape in the country.
The Early Days: Modest Beginnings
The concept of travel exhibitions in India began with small-scale events organized by tourism boards and trade associations. These early exhibitions were primarily focused on providing a space for travel agents, tour operators, and hoteliers to network and exchange ideas. The goal was to promote domestic tourism and create awareness about lesser-known destinations within India.
In the early stages, these exhibitions were limited in scope and reach. They were often held in major metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, attracting a niche audience of industry professionals. The exhibitions were mostly confined to traditional booths and stalls where participants displayed brochures, pamphlets, and maps. The primary focus was on promoting tour packages and hotel stays.
The Rise of Globalization and Technological Advancements
The 1990s marked a turning point for travel exhibitions in India as globalization began to take hold. With the liberalization of the Indian economy, the travel and tourism industry experienced a surge in growth. This period saw the entry of international players into the Indian market, leading to an increase in outbound tourism and the need for more sophisticated marketing strategies.
Technological advancements, particularly the advent of the internet, also played a significant role in the evolution of travel exhibitions. Online booking platforms, digital marketing, and social media transformed the way people researched and planned their travels. Exhibitions began to incorporate technology into their offerings, providing interactive displays, virtual tours, and online booking options. This shift not only enhanced the visitor experience but also broadened the reach of these events, attracting a more diverse audience.
The Emergence of IITM: A Game Changer
The India International Travel Mart (IITM) was established during this transformative period, quickly becoming one of the most influential travel exhibitions in the country. IITM distinguished itself by offering a comprehensive platform that catered to both domestic and international tourism. The exhibition featured a wide range of participants, including tourism boards, airlines, hotels, travel agents, and technology providers.
One of the key factors behind IITM's success has been its ability to adapt to changing market dynamics. Unlike traditional exhibitions, IITM embraced a more experiential approach, offering visitors immersive experiences that went beyond the conventional booth setup. From live cultural performances to interactive workshops and seminars, IITM created an environment where participants could engage with potential customers in meaningful ways.
IITM also recognized the importance of promoting lesser-known destinations in India. By providing a platform for smaller states and regions to showcase their unique offerings, IITM played a crucial role in diversifying India's tourism landscape. This focus on regional diversity helped to boost tourism in areas that had previously been overlooked, contributing to the overall growth of the industry.
Sustainability and Ethical Tourism: The New Frontier
As the travel industry continues to evolve, so too do the themes and focus areas of travel exhibitions. In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on sustainability and ethical tourism, driven by increasing awareness of the environmental and social impacts of travel. Exhibitions like IITM have been at the forefront of promoting responsible travel practices, encouraging exhibitors to showcase eco-friendly initiatives and sustainable tourism products.
This shift towards sustainability has also influenced the design and execution of travel exhibitions themselves. IITM, for example, has implemented green initiatives such as reducing waste, using eco-friendly materials, and promoting carbon offset programs. These efforts reflect a broader industry trend towards creating more sustainable and responsible tourism experiences.
The Role of Technology in the Future of Travel Exhibitions
Looking ahead, technology is set to play an even more significant role in the evolution of travel exhibitions in India. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital tools, leading to the rise of virtual and hybrid events. While physical exhibitions like IITM remain popular, there is a growing interest in leveraging technology to reach a global audience and provide more personalized experiences.
Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are poised to revolutionize the way exhibitions are conducted. These technologies allow visitors to explore destinations, experience local culture, and interact with exhibitors from the comfort of their homes. IITM has already begun to experiment with these innovations, offering virtual tours and interactive experiences that complement the physical exhibition.
Conclusion: A Dynamic and Evolving Industry
The evolution of travel exhibitions in India reflects the dynamic nature of the country's tourism industry. From humble beginnings as trade shows, these exhibitions have grown into influential platforms that drive economic growth, promote cultural exchange, and shape the future of travel. IITM, in particular, has played a pivotal role in this evolution, setting new standards for what travel exhibitions can achieve.
As the industry continues to evolve, travel exhibitions like IITM will need to remain adaptable, embracing new technologies and sustainable practices to stay relevant. The future of travel exhibitions in India is bright, with endless possibilities for innovation and growth.

It not only helps deploy business quickly but also considerably reduces operational costs. Since data security and recovery are critical concerns for small organizations, they prefer to deploy data on private clouds.
Furthermore, companies are utilizing big data analytics to provide the best services to their customers. Cloud services assist in optimizing business processes for small enterprises. These factors would further supplement the demand for servers in small enterprises during the forecast period.
Server platforms have evolved to incorporate features and capabilities once considered add-ons and were integrated only for advanced deployments. The architecture, product capability, and management and development tools account for a substantial share of the total ownership costs of owning the servers. The total ownership costs include the initial design, deployment, and recurring costs. The initial design and deployment costs cover the costs incurred on hardware, software, installation & setup, integration & testing, and initial deployment.
