It’s no secret that I love Studebakers and post them pretty frequently - and later this week I’m hoping to get a tour of a #Studebaker collection (we’ll see), but many Studebaker posts focus on the company’s decline - this one’s from the last era when the company was genuinely healthy. This #1949 Commander Regal Deluxe Convertible - yes, that is the real name - was the flashiest and most expensive car in the lineup when it was new, and South Bend had pipped the entire car industry - worldwide - to produce the first totally new post-WW2 car just two model years earlier. The marketing line was “First by far with a postwar car.” The design had been done by Studebaker engineer with Raymond Loewy & Associates - but the actual styling was mostly done by #VirgilExner, though he got none of the credit and he and #Loewy hated eachother - ultimately leading to his departure to Chrysler. But that was still in the future. The new cars reached showrooms by late June, and at a time when every other manufacturer was churning out basically warmed-up 1942 leftovers, Studebaker dealers were in the position of having a brand new car to sell. They’d be joined by Kaiser/Frazer later that year but for over two years they were way out ahead of GM, Ford, Chrysler, and even the other independents. This turned out to be a mixed blessing - Studebaker could brag but in 1946 the public was hungry for any car, brandy new or not, and the money spent on the redesign might’ve been better spent later - but for the time being, Studebaker sold whatever it could build, and 1949 was the company’s postwar peak - 228,000 sales and 8th in the industry. Under the skin the prewar engines remained - a 169.6 cube L-head for the cheaper, smaller Champion, inherited from it’s predecessor, and a 226-cube L-head six for the Commander, inherited from the pre-war Commander, which had, unlike the old Champion, not returned for 1946. Eventually the #Commander Six was punched up to 246 cubes, which lasted until a V8, reportedly cribbed from Cadillac’s V8, appeared in 1951. By then, work was underway for the dramatic ’53s… #StudebakerCommander #trb_autozone #patina_perfection #ptk_vehicles #1940s #asundaycarpic

The Dodge Firearrow II: A Highly-Influential 1950s Concept Car
The Dodge Firearrow II: A Highly-Influential 1950s Concept Car #DodgeFirearrowII #cardesign #design #industrialdesign #virgilexner #classiccar #vintagecar #car #cars
The Dodge Firearrow II was one of four influential concept cars built by Italian coachbuilders Ghia under the direction of Virgil Exner, one of the most celebrated (and most copied) American car designers of the mid-20th century. Unlike the earlier Dodge Firearrow I which was a static model for display only, the Dodge Firearrow II was a fully functioning and drivable car built as a potential…
