“The Sabang I know” ...has this foot bridge. • ...The bridge that crosses a small stream that marks the far boundary of where a row of “sawali” and “nipa” cottages used to stand. The beach cottage that was nearest this stream was the perennial favorite place for relaxation of the late polymath Antonio Socrates, a medical and geology doctor who made Palawan his home during most of his adult life. A separate study conducted by researchers at the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) of the Philippine Department of Science and Technology published in the ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development in August 2020 indicates a US EPA Hazard Index value greater of ">1." In the study headed by environmental chemist Jessie Samaniego, the amount of mercury in the communities impacted by the high concentration of mercury in the environment of the abandoned mine is considered "beyond acceptable limits." In another report published by Samaniego last October, chromium concentration in groundwater from newly drilled boreholes in the area were found to have exceeded WHO and Philippine environmental regulation values. Chromium is naturally occurring in ultramafic rocks where mercury minerals are deposited during geological intrusion. It embodies a vast set of people and the near-shore seas where artisanal fishermen move about on a daily basis. As a conservation communicator, I am interested in the people and the places by the sea because this is where and for whom marine conservation has a direct impact. Understanding and a centering of the people and places of the panagat is key to marine conservation as it not only empowers the subjects themselves but brings marine conservation issue to the general fold by empathy. • The people of panagat are not just one dimensional fisherfolk. On the other hand, the places of panagat are not just places for catching fish.
