Why DB6 apt for making #forging dies and molds? Why DB Steel is the best choice for metal forging based manufacturing? DIN 1.2714 equivalent grade DB6 / L6 / SKT4

As the designation itself implies, DB 6 is a #DieBlockSteel conforming presumably to AISI L6 (U.S.) and similar to DIN 1.2714 (#Europe). Containing Nickel (1.5 to 1.8%); Chromium (0.8 to 1.2%); Molybdenum (0.35 to 0.55%); and traces of Vanadium; it is a borderline high-Carbon steel since its Carbon content is between 0.65 and 0.75 and being higher than that of steels of the DIN 1.2714 class, it is harder without an increase in brittleness. Its Nickel content gives it great impact resistance, while its Chromium content provides both, toughness and corrosion resistance, so wear is minimal. It is also resistant to thermal shock and thermal fatigue cracking. Molybdenum contributes to high temperature tensile strength. In austenitic Chromium-Nickel steels it inhibits pitting and crevice corrosion, even when Chloride and Sulphur levels are high.

Thus DB6 is a versatile steel that may be used for both hot and cold work, and can be forged into dies of all kinds. Being relatively expensive at around $ 2,000 a tone, in comparison to steels suitable for work at lower temperatures, it is mainly used for “hot work”.

What is steel grade 2344? What is the DIN standard for tool steel? Endurance and High Resistance of DIN 1.2344 (#H13 Steel) from #ViratSpecialSteel

DIN 2344 Steel (H13) is a hot-work tool steel, preferred for its high strength and excellent thermal shock resistance. It is often used in the production of tools, dies and components that are subject to high levels of stress and heat. It is an ideal choice for hot-work applications such as injection molds, die casting molds, die forging and extrusion dies. Steel DIN 1.2344 can also be used for cold-work applications such as broaching, thread rolling and knurling. It is a versatile steel, highly resistant to thermal fatigue and wear, and offers good toughness and resistance to softening at elevated temperatures.

DIN 2344 Steels are low Carbon Steels with Carbon content of between 0.37% and 0.42% and Chromium content between 4.8 to 5.5%, Molybdenum content between 1.2 to 1.5%. They may contain Silicon upto 0.3% and just a trace of Sulphur. But the Vanadium content is quite high at around 1% which gives it great resistance to abrasion regardless of temperature (from low end to high end).

Other such desirable properties include: - Highly tough and ductile (suitable for wires and ropes) - Resistant to thermal fatigue and hot cracking - Retains strength at high temperatures - Allows through-hardening - Resists distortion when hardened - High machinability

These steels can be hardened to what is required by the application. Swaging dies need material of high hardness (53 – 55) and this can be achieved by tempering at a temperature of 500°C.

What is the differences between the H11 and H13 Hot Work Steel? Looking to source Hot Work Tool Steel from India?

If we compare between H11 and H13, H11 tool steel consists of less vanadium than the commonly used H13 hot work tool steel. This gives H11 steels the higher toughness, with some reduction in wear resistance and tamper resistance.

H13 is another popular alloy from the family of Chromium Hot Work Steels corresponding to the ASTM A681 standard. With a Carbon content that can vary from 0.32 to 0.45 percent it is also a low Carbon steel like H11 ( 2343 steel ) and the Chromium content can be in the 4.75 to 5.5 percent range. It differs from H11 principally in its Vanadium content which is at least 0.8 percent and could be as high as 1.2 percent. This, when coupled with its significant Molybdenum content of around 1.5 percent, lends great strength to the alloy while the high Chromium ensures that it does not turn soft even at relatively high temperatures.    

Compared to H11, H13 ( 2344 steel ) has less impact toughness but greater wear resistance as well as temper resistance.

As a general rule more other constituents in an allow cause the thermal conductivity to drop and while the thermal conductivity of H11 tool steel is 42.2 W/mK, the thermal conductivity of H13 tool steel is 28.6 W/mK. For applications such as stamping higher thermal conductivity may be preferred (so that cooling takes place quicker leading to shorter cycle times). For applications where such conductivity is not that important, H13 tool steel may be preferred for its longer life and greater resilience to the development of fractures.
