“She throws the hard punches. Plays for keeps.” He took his seat on the couch. “Think we can agree on that.”

That’s not all. Laura Roslin, 5′6″ and prone to giggles. Bill’s eyes slid to his friend, but he thought about her and the shape of her smart mouth, the way her legs crossed behind her desk.

He thought about what those legs could wrap around and stopped himself.

“Smart, sure. Effective? Hell, even if you’re dead she’d still find a way to kill you,” Saul quipped. “You can wrap it up and throw on a pretty, pink bow, doesn’t make a lick of difference. I’d hate to get on her bad side.” 

“Could be a problem.”

“What? Her bad side?”

“No. Just sides,” Bill clarified. He brought the whiskey to his mouth. “…She’s got a lot of that.”

For a moment, nothing. Then the realization slowly dawned on him and Tigh split into a wolfish smile.

“Don’t mind me saying this, Bill, but you’ve got it–”

“That bad?”

“You said it, not me.”

The admiral’s laugh rumbled and he felt warm inside, probably from the whiskey. A nuclear apocalypse, running from Cylons, a teacher as their president… “Should’ve been born earlier, Saul,” Bill rasped.

“And miss all this?” The XO raised his glass. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”

Most people didn’t dare step into the gym this late. Ten past closing. He watched her throw a kick and a hook, then another and more, the punching bag swinging. All I’m saying is... when your partner takes one for you--heck, even if it wasn’t for you... Seen a lot of guys go nuts that way. Kara Thrace, her second partner to be hanging by a thread. The gym’s light sucked all the color from her skin until all that was left was a ghost with wild eyes and vendettas.

Castillo loomed behind her, in her head, unblinking and silent. Lizard-like.

"Check our sources, run the plates.” His voice was sudden but not all at once. “Work it with Gina. Trudy.”
