SPRING IN BERKSHIRE

April 23
Tumblr media
It is Spring in Berkshire and we’re high up above the main Bath road on a ridge that overlooks the railway and everything else.  Up here they breed race horses that go to Newbury and race for the world.  My Dad loved the horses and so I did too, it was the kind of enthusiasm that was catching.  I never rode but I loved the horses, the race and everything to do with it. Today I see that there is Point to Point announced for April 26 Sunday across fields high above the sea.  We used to go too, but the first love is the race with the jockeys’ colours the wonderful names of the horses and the specialty of the breeder.  There was a book on the form and the wonderful horses for the year.  It was all completely infectious.  We would go and sit outside the racing area with a picnic and the sound of the horses racing was in background, and the crowds cheering.
Tumblr media
But today it was quieter, it was Spring coming so slowly to Berkshire and the country after a cold long time.  So when you see a spangle of hawthorn blossom on a dark hedge you are excited because that means hope, hope springing up again, that this cold can change, in fact everything can change, so let’s keep going, you never know what might be around the corner.  In fact, the Hawthorne is the first.  I remember the image from Cicely Barker’s flower fairies of the trees, the image for Spring, Hawthorne announcing it.
Tumblr media
This is a Spring walk in Berks and even in the woods there are no bluebells yet.  I know exactly where the bluebells should come in the woods, I have seen them year after year.  They aren’t there yet, just this misty hawthorne blossom.  There are bridle ways here, daffodils beside them and that’s testament to how many horses are up here on the ridge.  They don’t have footpaths, they have bridle paths, so you do listen out for the jingle of the bridle and that sound like no other, of hooves on a muddy path, a thud that comes out of the past, our past from before we thought of cars.  But the horses are still here so there are paths  for them.
Tumblr media
The trees here look bigger than anywhere else. Is the weather kinder, better, is the soil richer, or is it that there is a different species up here.  The branches reach to the sky and obscure the skyline with their blooming upwards.
Tumblr media
The rhododendron is beginning here too. They’re splendid on Exmoor, a statement of glory, waiting and never, not ever giving up because the best is yet to come. Here’s a hidden bush beside an old school that is long quiet, it had been a hospital long ago up here where the air is good.
Tumblr media
I find violets, tiny under the pine tree that houses the rooks by the main drive.  They are just tiny dots, and then a find a cultivated rhododendron bus like handkerchiefs, unlike anything else in nature.  There are trees here whose blossoms spray upwards like the sea foam, and there are fruiting trees that need the bees to come.
Tumblr media
There is also an Old Man Willow here that is just beginning, as if he heard the notes of Spring and decided to put a push on but then hesitated and is now waiting for a better moment.  So the leaves are very gently there, of the palest green. Underneath is the perfect bench for looking at the tiny fronds that are the beginning, just like us.

The Journey of a Lifetime .:Intro:.
~ Bilbo Baggins x OC ~
Tumblr media
Since Violet was seven years old, she has lived in Rivendell amongst the elves, and she never imagined herself ever leaving. Never. Rivendell was a paradise. There was always plenty of food, and it was always so clean and fresh, the springs were perfect for taking relaxing baths in after a long day, and for a little hobbit, she still got to sleep in a bed made for a full sized elf in silken robes, tailored exactly to fit her size. On top of all that, Violet had a wonderful mentor, Gandalf, and while he was away, which he normally was, Elrond, and if he was gone as well...then Lady Galadriel might teach her a fun spell or two. It truly was an honor to learn the power of healing from such incredible people, and she has grown quite attached to them, and to everyone she has spent the last twenty-five years with.
This is why it was so hard for the young hobbit to pack her bags right now. Tears welled up in her eyes as she grabbed a couple of extra tunics and leggings, folding them neatly and placing them in her bag before grabbing her brush, bandages, her book of herbs, and some rations she had made herself along with an extra loaf of bread that Lindir had made for her after Elrond told him that she would be leaving for the Shire to help Gandalf with an adventure of some sort. All Lindir knew is that it was something about a mountain, and that’s about all Violet knew as well. Gandalf wouldn’t go into much detail, but he told her where she needed to meet him at and when.
Violet paused in the middle of packing and she sighed. She had to go to the Shire, of all places. She gulped nervously and placed a bottle full of dried chamomile in her bag and thought back to when she used to live with her adopted family back in Bree. For the first seven years of her life, Violet has lived so close to the Shire and not once has she ever been. From what she was told, she was born in the Shire, but she obviously has no memory of it since her birth mother had given her up at only a few days old. From what Gandalf has told her, the Shire is a beautiful, peaceful place with rolling green hills, crystal clear water, and it was full of happy hobbits. Violet dreaded meeting this hobbit of Bag End though, but only because she’s been so far removed from Hobbit culture that she knew for sure that she would make a huge fool out of herself. This Baggins guy seemed like he was very uptight, and she doubted he would be very fun to bring on a long journey.
With a sigh, Violet finished packing her bag, trying to keep her load as light as possible so she wouldn't struggle later on. Elrond was already waiting by the entrance to Rivendell with her pony all saddled up and ready to go. Violet’s heart sank a little at seeing the horse ready to go and Elrond glanced down at her with a gentle smile. He knew that she didn’t want to leave, but this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for her, and if Gandalf said that it would be good for her, then it was something that the dark haired hobbit had to do. Gandalf had already made the decision for Violet that she would be going. So that was that.
“Try not to be so down, Ms. Violet. This will be-” Elrond started but was cut off by Violet as she climbed on top of her brown and white spotted pony.
“A learning experience, I know.” Violet huffed and Elrond rolled his eyes.
“You will also be visiting the very place you were born. Aren’t you excited?” the elf asked and Violet just bit her lip nervously. Her expression said it all to Elrond and he sighed softly. Violet never really got exposed to hobbit culture, and while hobbits were quite nice, they tended to stay away from individuals they didn’t know too well, or ones that seemed ‘strange’. She was sure that the hobbits of the Shire would find her very strange indeed, with her elven clothes and carrying products they have probably never seen nor heard of before.
Violet hesitated before answering Elrond, turning her pony in the direction of the path in front of her, one that would lead her to The Shire. “I...suppose,” she said softly then turned back to Elrond and told him goodbye. Elrond waved her a farewell as she rode off. It was a three-week ride, and Violet has never travelled on her own before, so she was nervous. Elrond felt a bit nervous about it as well, but if Gandalf and Galadriel insisted that she would be okay and that she was ready, then he would try to push his worries to the side.
So, for about three weeks, Violet rode by herself from Rivendell all the way to the rolling, green hills of the Shire. It was just after sunset when she arrived, and she could tell her pony was begging for a rest and a snack, and so was she. Violet got off of her pony, who she had named Lily, and tugged her along by the reigns towards Hobbiton.
As she walked down the dirt road, the occasional hobbit or two that would pass her would give her a strange look, knowing for a fact that they have never seen her in their village before. Violet did her best to ignore the passerby hobbits and looked for Bag End. “Gandalf said that Bag End is...at the top of the hill..with a large tree on top?” Violet mumbled to herself, looking up and instantly finding a lit up burrow with a large tree at the very top. There was also the glowing blue symbol Gandalf had scratched onto the green door with his staff just earlier that day. She made her way up the hill and tied her pony to the wooden post of the hobbit gentleman’s fencing and fed Lily a red apple before opening the gate and walking up the stone steps and to the large, circular, green door.
Violet gulped, a good bit of anxiety taking over as she raised her fist to knock on the door three times. She heard voices inside and figured some of the company had already arrived before her. Then, she heard another voice. It sounded flustered and irritated and it was followed by the heavy sound of footsteps getting closer and closer to the door until it finally opened, revealing the master of Bag End himself, Bilbo Baggins.
“If I see one more dwarf I’m-!!” Bilbo’s voice was rather loud and angry now as he swung the door open and Violet flinched and blinked a couple of times, her eyes wide as they were locked on Bilbo’s. He instantly froze. “Oh! I, uhm,” he stuttered and ran a hand through his messy, light red curls and glanced back at the ruckus going on in his pantry before turning back to the dark haired, female hobbit...dressed in elven clothing? “I-I apologize, are you-are you lost, madam?” Bilbo stuttered slightly, the tips of his ears turning red from embarrassment, making sure to address her more formally since he started off their meeting with his frustrated tone.
“O-oh! Um, no, I’m actually not lost. Um-” Violet gulped and she remembered what Elrond had taught her the day before she left Rivendell. “Violet Newbury,” she began and bowed slightly before Bilbo and his eyes widened. This is exactly what the dwarves did. “At you service!” she proclaimed with a bit more confidence. “I am a healer, trained by Elrond, Lord of Rivendell.” she  explained. This certainly peaked Bilbo’s interest. A hobbit from Rivendell? The bachelor hobbit couldn’t believe his pointed ears and he remained silent for only a moment before coming back to his senses and stepping aside.
“Well, come in then, Violet.” Bilbo said, motioning for her to come in. She glanced at Bilbo for a moment before taking a couple of steps inside and he closed the door behind her with a soft sigh. Violet looked around the hobbit hole and took it all in, only ever hearing of these from Gandalf when she would ask about the place she was born. It was just as warm and cozy as he said they were. She could hear the booming, joyous voices of all of the dwarves and she saw them bustling back and forth from Bilbo’s pantry to the dining room to set up dinner
“Where is Gandalf?” she asked rather quickly, turning to Bilbo. This caught him off guard a bit and he pointed towards the dining room where the wizard was counting all of the dwarves, making sure everyone was here. From the face he made, it looked like there was still one dwarf still missing. “Gandalf!” Violet called out, a smile growing on her face for the first time in weeks. The tall wizard turned and instantly smiled as he saw the dark haired hobbit walk up to him, clearly very happy to see a familiar face.
“Ah, Ms. Violet! I am very glad to see that you have made it safe. Grab a plate and eat something. You look famished.” Gandalf said, noticing that she was a bit thinner than the last time saw her. She must not have eaten very much during her journey here and that made Gandalf sigh. If she was going to be joining the company on the trip to Erebor, she needed to make sure to eat and keep her energy up. She was a very important asset to the company, after all. Having a reliable healer come along seemed to put the dwarves at ease, although they didn’t seem to like the fact of who she learned her skills from.
The company wasn't exactly sure what to make of Violet yet, but they still welcomed her into their group with open arms. Fili, Kili, and Bofur decided to immediately become her best friends and had her sit with them at the table. ‘Maybe these dwarves weren’t so bad after all?’ Violet thought as she bit down on a chicken leg. She glanced towards Bilbo as he turned towards his pantry and froze, now finding it completely emptied out. She swallowed her bite of chicken and felt a bit bad for him, but...wow was this food good! Violet rarely ate meat in Rivendell, so this was quite a treat for her. Master Baggins was quite the cook! She would definitely have to compliment him on his skills later.
Well, that is if he decided to come with them.

Inside the Writing Process - Part 4b
Bilingual Writing (Part 2):  Composition in German Zweisprächiges Schrieben (Teil 2): deustche Komposition
Violinen und Vwohltätigkeitsvereinläden - Kapitel Eins
Yes, yes, this is the worst and stupidest title I could possibly give to any book ever, and, no, no, that is not how you spell “Wohltätigkeitsvereinsladen”, but I’m determined to title all these books in the same way, so that’s the monstrosity attached to this one. Let me explain. I swear there’s a semi-decent reason.
It means “Violins and Charity Shops” (or “Vcharity Shops”, which is also not how you spell “charity shops”). Such fun. Why?
I’ve been working on the first ideas I’ve got for the dark academia novel based on the Violins and Violets series, inspired by the story of a Reading charity shop where 18th century manuscripts of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s compositions were found: read about it here, here and here!
The reports are quite contradictory, jumping between “a charity shop in Reading” and “a charity shop in Newbury”... they’re often referred to as “the same place”, but... they’re really not. Here’s a map.
Warum?
Tumblr media
Reading’s closer to Sandhurst (where I grew up) than it is to Newbury, and I wouldn’t at any point say “I grew up in Reading”. It’s where we went to buy fabric, and to do our Christmas shopping, because the shopping centre there was our nearest large one. I don’t know if I’d call Newbury part of Reading. The train ride between them is something like half an hour, so... while that’s not a really long way, it isn’t really close, either. Who knows?
Anyway, it’s not the only time Mozart’s been found in a charity shop, and as I love both Mozart and charity shops (all two things, I know, I know, such variety (sarc.)), I quite want to explore this idea in my stories. Obviously it’s not Mozart, here, it’s Hans Schmidt, but... ooh, I’m excited about it!
To quote this lovely blog (which has some very beautiful photos):
It’s slightly tatty, torn in places, held together with old peeling tape. It’s yellowed with age and there are pen marks in the margins. But it’s oh so beautiful and full of history, its obviously been well loved and well used before it was abandoned in the 50p box at the back of the charity shop. I wish it could tell it’s story….
Isn’t that just so intriguing? What am I meant to do with that? Not turn it into a book? Come on. I’m a musician and a sociolinguist. Old letters, old music manuscripts, these things are all rich in information about times long past. I want to write this book so much it hurts, so, without further ado, let’s introduce:
Inside the Writing Process - Part 4b
Bilingual Writing (Part 2):  Composition in German
Was sollte ich damit tun? Darüber keine Roman schreiben? Wirklich.
Inside the Writing Process - Part 4b
It was dreadfully hot in the charity shop on the High Street, the air all damp and heavy. It smelled like dust and sweat, and, although I was glad that summer had arrived at long last, I might have been just as happy to wait twenty-four hours for the thermometer to start exploding.
Then the sun would have come out on Sunday, and then I wouldn’t have had to go to work. The shop was closed on Sundays. I was there all day on a Saturday. Normally I would’ve been happy to spend my day there, to wash all the clothes people brought in, so that they’d look airy and new and fresh, but, on this sunny day, the washing machine’s thumping was the last sound I wanted to hear.
I’m writing the first version of this novel in German, to be translated into English afterwards, almost exactly as I wrote “Violins and Violets” (discussed here), because I’m studying German, and like composing in German! I’m currently reading (outside my studies) “The Secret History” by Donna Tartt, in German translation, and it’s wonderful and funny.
I think, I thiiiiiiink, I’ll write this novel as taking place in Southampton, because I know the city very well, and because it has so many charity shops, but I don’t know. Maybe I’ll repeat what I did with “She Has No Name”, and invent a new city, so that I can do whatever I want, without worrying about how the city’s laid out. I still don’t know.
But! German! Into English! Maybe into German again, when I’ve finished writing a good version. We’ll see. It’s so much fun, writing in German.

Tales “Cast List”
There’s been some requests for full OC face-claim/casting lists. Here’s the lists for the original Tales and Next Gen. Legacy will have its own post because I wanted to add pictures since those stories probably won’t have banners for a while. (And we’re super proud of a couple of those choices.) Please note a couple people have changed since the last time I put up a list or answered asks.
I have only included characters who have not appeared in movies and do not have a canon actor, so the original team, and Peter and MJ are not here.
Tower Series:
Amanda Newbury - Emily Blunt Cal Bennett - Heath Ledger Violet Marsh - Reese Witherspoon Zev Taschengregger - Andy Sandburg Ora Martinez - America Ferarra Lani Yee - Jamie Chung
Next Gen:
Eli Bradley: Trevante Rhodes Tess Sullivan: Anna Kendrick Kate Bishop: Constance Wu Wyatt Okpik: Martin Sensmeier Kamala Kahn: Afshan Azad Raf Ingesson: Lucas Till Nate Richards: Tyler Hoechlin Cassie Lang: Jenna Coleman Ada Banner (adult): Kate McKinnon

I went to Newbury Comics and they did not have violet night in stock, but they did have lie locks
Rather than the aurora borealis I shall look like a piece of oldtimey violet-flavored candy and that's also fantastic
(violets are actually really yummy, you can literally pluck them and eat the flower part fresh)
I always feel better when I have vibrant hair tbh
I'm gonna dye my hair, but I'm undecided on what color
I'm thinking some type of color that one might associate with the aurora borealis 🤔
I wish to look like a fancy bird, basically

WAITING FOR SPRING; ON THE RUN FROM WINTER…
Tumblr media
Blog October 22
By Lynne Pearl
Although it is October, and we have to look forward to winter there are still sweet memories of the Spring that has just passed.  We can look forward to it when this coming winter is over. As ever the summer flew by, there were the swims in the sea that are precious. Especially when we remember them in mid winter when it seems that the sea will never be green again and that it has always been grey and sometimes brown or black if there is a storm brewing.  The sea is no place to hide when winter comes.
Tumblr media
Going to an old building or one that is fine and elegant uplifts the spirit and if there is beautiful music that works even better.  At this place that I visit when you come in Spring there are daffodils to greet you as the car approaches the drive, they nod in the wind at the cars that pass on their way to the big city of London or on their way home to be with their Newbury horses, bred to race and be the darling of the race track.
There are narcissi by the main gate under the ancient trees.  They are the first to greet you when you arrive here at the end of winter and they are the first to greet Spring as well.  You have left behind everything.
Tumblr media
So, you get out of the car and breathe in deeply, you have come for the weekend to get away from the constant drift and chatter and mindless attention to many small details that befuddle the brain.  As you breathe in you think, well this is maybe the place to settle and put all that behind.  And there is glorious music for all, day in and day out.
Tumblr media
Sometimes in the early evening an organist comes and practises in the perfect acoustics.  I expect the organ is lovely too but I only listen as an amateur who likes to be soothed.
At least they don’t come here, to this place, the violets are there delicate under the fir trees by the front gate, tiny, but brave ever so delicate.  They are like the promises to come the other side of winter.

Violet Crawley youre a sunflower shirt
Tumblr media
From all the t-shirt brand Violet Crawley youre a sunflower shirt . owners that I have been writing about in the past years, Johnny Cupcakes has come out as one of the most consistent in delivering quality content, creative promotion methods and building a strong community around a fun concept.Referencing pop culture in a t-shirt design isn’t as easy as it seems. Many do it and the majority delivers a mash-up of iconic characters. But most of the time the overall design doesn’t make sense. People buy them because they love some tv show or video game., not because the references are that cleverly combined. That’s not the case for Johnny Cupcakes t-shirts. The unique design style, as well as the concept of garments presented as baked goods, never jump the shark. The prints could easily sell, even if you didn’t care or know much about pop culture. You wear them because they look cool and are carefully designed on quality textiles. Violet Crawley youre a sunflower shirt, hoodie, sweater, longsleeve and ladies t-shirt

Unisex The newest official collaboration is dedicated to the 90’s kids that grew up with the awesome Power Rangers Violet Crawley youre a sunflower shirt . The pick is not random, because there is a 2017 reboot of the show. When I looked at the designs I truly felt old and nostalgic. See? That’s why I love this brand – the designs will always tap into a genuine experience. The collection was launched on February 25th. If you had been among the lucky first 50 in-store customers at 279 Newbury Street Boston, MA, you would have received free gift bags. Apart from t-shirts there are also posters, pins and stickers available. This is the kind of news I want to bring you every day, such as the one I’m going to write about. We love deals and promotions and Threadless has been treating its customers with pretty good offers lately. My favorite one is when I get a FREE SHIPPING code.I would rather choose my favorite t-shirts and not pay for the delivery than having to decide from a smaller selection of products that would be included in a sale. It is restrictive and then I also have to pay for delivery. I find that to be an annoying extra charge. Fair indeed, but annoying. So, the current Threadless sale is one that I would suggest you check out!Because there’s this condition to spend a minimum of $50 for domestic purchases and $90 for international ones in order to enjoy free shipping, I recommend you browse through the Marvel collection, which has 3 brand new design added. Notice that they are also at 20% off so this is an offer you shouldn’t pass! You Can See More Product: https://newshirtonline.com/product-category/trending/ Read the full article

Fabulous women of the Restoration era
Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland, Countess of Castlemaine (1640-1709)
Barbara is one of the most controversial women of her era and one of King Charles II’s most contentious mistresses. She was not affable and down-to-earth like Nell Gwyn, or baby-faced and weepy like Louise de Kerouaille, or daring and brave like Hortense Mancini. At best, history has characterised her as a haughty beauty. At worst, she is the classic evil, power-hungry whore, wheedling more and more out of her royal lover as if she were holding a knife to his throat. In fact, Barbara was none of these things. She was fiery, outspoken and loud, knowing full well how to hold her own and command attention in a world made for men, and was subsequently desired and loathed in equal measure.
Barbara was born into a fairly-impoverished, but illustrious, family at the tipping point of the start of the English Civil War. When her father, the Viscount Grandison, died fighting for the Royalists at the Battle of Newbury in 1643, Barbara and her mother were left impoverished and supporters of the losing side of the war. To save them, Barbara’s mother married a cousin of her late husband and for a time, the family hid their Royalist sympathies in a now republican England. Young Barbara was still being schooled to revere the new, exiled king, Charles II, however: she remembered stealing down to the cellar of their house every 29th May (Charles II’s birthday), in pitch black, and toasting to his health. Moreover, Barbara was growing into almost overwhelming beauty. She was unusually tall and incredibly voluptuous, with masses of thick black hair, heavy-lidded violet eyes, ivory skin and “a sensuous, sulky mouth.” She had many admirers and lovers in her early years. One of the first was the 2nd Earl of Chesterfield, but although he conceded Barbara’s beauty and intelligence, he could not marry such an impoverished lady. In 1659, she eventually married Roger Palmer, although Roger’s father told him that Barbara would make him the most unhappy man in England. And sure enough, very soon after the couple travelled to the Hague where the exiled Charles II was living with his closest supporters, and Barbara finally met the hero of her childhood dreams, Roger was very quickly pushed aside, and Barbara became Charles official mistress a few months before his restoration as King of England in 1660. For a woman who had essentially met Charles when she was something of a “fangirl,” Barbara exercised considerable power over him from the off. She wasn’t Charles’ first lover by a long way but Barbara was clearly determined to be his last.
Barbara rode in Charles’ entourage on his progress through London upon the restoration of the monarchy and the people flocked to catch a glimpse of this divinely beautiful lady who eyed them imperiously from one of the balconies of Whitehall Palace. She bore the king several children in quick succession and by all accounts, ruled him completely. She would often threaten to dash the brains out of her children should Charles fail to acknowledge them as his own. She had a foul temper and was not afraid to lash out violently at anyone who overstepped the mark. The diarist, Samuel Pepys, was fiercely attracted to her, frequently admitting to imagining her naked every time he saw her (she features in his diaries no less than 152 times), but hardly spoke two words in her presence for fear of her infamous moods. When King Charles married the Portuguese princess, Catherine of Braganza in 1662, he still would not give up his temperamental mistress. Indeed, Barbara accompanied the royal couple on their honeymoon to Hampton Court, and planned, with almost pin-point accuracy, to give birth during this time. She and the Queen cultivated a great rivalry which eventually came to a head during the Bedchamber Crisis. Essentially, Charles had acquiesced to Barbara’s request to become one of Queen Catherine’s ladies-of-the-bedchamber, after she wept that she had no position at court “save for on my back,” and the Queen was understandably furious. In the end, Catherine was forced to accept and Barbara smugly assumed her position. Barbara and King Charles continued to have a healthy sex life (she bore him three more children following his marriage to Catherine) and Barbara proudly declared that he was an excellent and extremely well-endowed lover. So scandalous she was that another diarist, John Evelyn, called her “the curse of the nation.”
But Barbara was not all mad, bad and dangerous. Indeed, she could be extravagant, helping herself to the Privy purse and dabbling heavily in politics. She had a lot of lovers, including Charles’ eldest illegitimate son from a previous relationship, the Duke of Monmouth (it was probably from Barbara’s late night whisperings that Monmouth was utterly convinced that he should succeed his father). But she was also great fun. Those who were in her inner circle were struck by how enjoyable she was as a companion. One particularly (rather unsavoury) tale tells of how Barbara attempted to give fellatio to a recently exhumed 15th century bishop to impress her friends, after discovering he was still very much intact. Instead, his penis came off in her mouth and she spat it across the room. And despite being quite the wild-card, she was also known for her charitable nature and her fierce devotion to children. On one of her many trips to the theatre, a scaffold collapsed into the crowd and Barbara rushed to help an injured child from the rubble: she was the only member of the court to do so. And she was surprisingly a great supporter of Nell Gwyn’s, before Nell eventually usurped Barbara in the King’s affections. This was what mainly precipitated Barbara’s eventual downfall. Both she and the king were taking new lovers and Charles had finally grown bored of her changeable moods and questionable choices. She lost her position at court and Charles officially broke off their long-term relationship in 1673. Still, a week before the king’s death in 1685, he was seen enjoying Barbara’s company, in much the same way as he had done so in the early 1660s. They both remained in each other’s hearts. The end of Barbara’s own life was a rather sad one. In 1704, at the age of 64, she married the infamous rake, Robert “Beau” Fielding, who was about 10 years her junior. He was a bigamist and fleeced Barbara out of most of her remaining money. It broke her heart and she died very soon afterwards, in 1708, at the age of 68. It was a painful death, caused by dropsy and congestive heart failure.
Nowadays, we can only catch a glimpse of this once great, polarising lady, in portraits. We see a beautiful, confident woman who stares at us from the canvas, a slight cocksure smirk on her face, as if to remind us that she is our superior in every single capacity. In Sir. Peter Lely’s portrait of Barbara as Minerva (pictured), painted as part of a collection of court beauties, she assumes her role as the goddess of war perfectly. And yet, when we know her story, we find a woman who was supremely complicated and much less a villain. A woman who knew that in the world she lived in, sex appeal was its own currency and that beauty and wit, when used right, could be exchanged for power and status in a man’s world. Besides this, it is almost certain that she and Charles II were in mutual love for over 10 years and that keeping her royal lover was one of Barbara’s primary goals.

The Women of Greenham
The idea of nuclear war being a fantastical hypothetical for fiction to explore is a privilege.
This is a story I’ve wanted to tell for a while. It is my mother’s.
Jinny Gray was only eighteen when she made the decision to pack up and join the Greenham Common Protest. We sat down in her home in Nottingham to discuss those months.
“I was involved with a CMD – Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament – group in Nottingham, and we used to have women’s peace meetings once a week, and a group of us would meet in a church hall. We knew about Greenham from the start, that there was a new peace camp being set up.”
Greenham was famously women only.
“The fact that it was women only felt like it would be a different kind of protest. I think it was women only because we considered the future and had this connection to any future children we could have. We had this responsibility as guardians of the planet for future generations.”
“I really wanted to be a part of it. Our CMD group hired a minibus and we went down at first for one of the big weekends, we packed ourselves up with tents and sleeping bags and sandwiches, but I stayed. I came home or visited London occasionally, but I just really loved it. That first weekend was one of the big mass demonstrations, with women holding hands along the nine-mile perimeter fence. We’d hold hands and sing or shout at the soldiers,” she says, laughing at the memory.
Considering it was a nuclear base, it doesn’t sound very secure.
“The fence was made of that green wire netting, and on the top there’d be one or two little lines of barbed wire, but a pair of bolt cutters could cut a person sized hole in minutes. There weren’t enough soldiers to patrol the entire fence, so after one walked past you could cut a hole and loads of women could rush onto the base. There was always somebody doing something. Sometimes it was a large, prepared protest, other times individuals or a small group sneaking in.”
She happily remembers their exploits when inside the base.
“We’d cause mayhem. During the time I was there, it was a complete air force base, with shops and a bowling alley and a cinema. We’d break into the shops and steal Oreo cookies, because we couldn’t get them anywhere else. It was American soil, which we were also protesting.”
The politics surrounding the base was important to Jinny and the other protestors.
“We knew it was an American base, and that the Americans could base their missiles on our land. Our government effectively had no say how or when they were used, and that was part of the politics of the time that motivated me. Thatcher was Prime Minister, and we hated her. There was a real belief that when we got a female Prime Minister, when it eventually happened, things would be different. She would do things differently. And then the she we got didn’t.”
A proud and vocal feminist, Jinny stills feels strongly about the then-current Prime Minister.
“Completely. She would say that she was a total feminist, able to do anything a man could, but she didn’t promote the rights of women to be self-governing. She had the same male oriented policies as her predecessors and successors.”
But, of course, there were no men at Greenham – it was began with women, and stayed women only.
“Men could come as invited guests, on the big weekends, unless it was explicitly stated to be women only. They were invited as supporters and could bring food, which we weren’t about to turn down. Arthur Scargill coming down to blue gate with a bottle of brandy, and his wife made us a cake, which we thought was quite ironic. He was the strong spirits drinker and she the cake baker, even if they were genuinely supportive. It did make us giggle. We did actually have a lot of fun.”
Jinny paints a picture of a cheery, youthful camp. Somewhat surprisingly, she says, “I don’t recall really much hardship, honestly. It could be cold and rainy, but we got very good at living outside. We had tents and benders, made from pulling young saplings down.”
Jinny is now a loving mother and hardworking therapist, but during her Greenham days she was a lot more carefree. She never really considered what she was doing dangerous, even though that green wire fence was separating her from armed military personnel.
“We had the invincibility of youth. And we’d do sensible things like invisibility spells beforehand, in the hopes that we’d be invisible to the soldiers. We were all a little mad. I think that, because it was all women, we had a belief that we wouldn’t be treated as badly as male or mixed protestors would have been. In retrospect, I think we were treated differently; sometimes worse, sometimes better. “
She stayed at the camp for eighteen months, at the same gate. The base had several gates around it.
“The main gate, where the protest originated, was known as yellow gate. As other gates sprang up, it was decided that we didn’t want a hierarchy of gates, with greater and lesser gates, so colours were used. It was the most public one because it was the biggest and the press tended to there. I was at blue gate, which was mostly younger women my age, a bit wilder and not so serious. It was closest to the bus depot, and for the younger women it was easiest to get to because they took buses or hitched along the A4. Green gate was very spiritual, and violet gate was older women, in their 60’s. Green gate managed to buy a little area of land, so they couldn’t be evicted, unlike everyone else.
Eviction, she tells me, was a common problem. “The local authority would come around with a dustbin lorry, which we called the Muncher Wagon, throwing our stuff into it whilst we ran into the woods and hid stuff, because they couldn’t follow us in. They had nothing on us legally, because it was a common, so it belonged to the people. It was just their frustration that we caused.”
Jinny is happy to talk about her time at Greenham, but recalling one memory causes her to grow nervous and slightly sheepish.
“A group of us decided to do an action, which is what we called breaking in, one night, to see what we could find. We happened to have with us pots of paint, and we’d go in and paint stuff like ‘STOP’ on the runway. Useful really. There was a plane on the runway and ran away before being arrested. Usually we’d be taken to Newbury police station and charged with criminal damage under British law, but on this occasion we were taken inside the base and were charged with criminal damage to the tune of $6M. It became apparent that we’d thrown paint on a secret plane painted to not be detected by radar. We’d thrown white emulsion all over it. They first terrified us by saying they were going to fly us to America and try us there, and we really believed it would happen. Eventually they relented and took us about five or six miles out of the base in the night, and dumped us on the road. We walked back.”
Jinny was not worried about her future, despite the multiple arrests. “I never gave my real name. Many of us used fake names, like Frida People. It wasn’t illegal to give a fake name if you intended to go to court under that name. “
But real life and responsibilities eventually took priority over. Jinny went to a polytechnic in London to study American Studies, but she says that she never really left Greenham. “I lived in a flat in Islington and that became a sort of second base for women to come to and stay in, and I’d often speak to the press from there in my first year. And after that I’d fundraise and do things for the miners, because coal was preferable to nuclear power and nuclear weapons production. Male miners would come stay with us, and we probably freaked them out because they didn’t know women like us. But, we won, and the common is a common again. I took my son there for a picnic there. It’s just a beautiful, ordinary piece of land.
The last women left Greenham in 2000, nine years after the last missiles had left the base, and having won the right to erect a memorial on the site. Jinny is proud of her time, and of all the women who protested.
The idea of nuclear war being a fantastical hypothetical for fiction to explore is a privilege. It is a privilege earned by others, for us.
