Gen V is an American superhero television series, developed by Craig Rosenberg, Evan Goldberg, and Eric Kripke, serving as a spin-off of The Boys by Kripke, and based on The Boys comic book story arc "We Gotta Go Now" by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The series serves as the third entry in The Boys franchise.

The series, set concurrently with the fourth season of The Boys, premiered on Amazon Prime Video on September 29, 2023. In October 2023, less than a month after its premiere, the series was renewed for a second season.

Young adult superheroes, or "supes", are tested in battle royal challenges at the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting founded by Patrick Godolkin run by Vought International.

The writing style lacks all pretentiousness, by drawing you immediately into the story. You keep guessing, and your attention is held. The characters have their own distinct personalities and motivations. Isn't it amazing how many novels in the past few years can't accomplish these simple things? If a time-travel junkie like me, or even if only slightly interested in the subject, definitely add this one to your reading list.

Another thing that's uncommon, is doing romance right in novels; avoiding that tired old instalove trope. And this novel nails it.

There's one part near the end that's just... Multi-dimensionaly beautiful. I won't spoil you any more than that.

I enjoyed this charming middle-grade / all ages fantasy adventure which is filled with strange and interesting creatures, and has just enough whimsy. The weird characters in this new world were inventive mixes of real animals. The technology is cool too.

This book is good enough that if there's a sequel, I'll read it even if I don't get an ARC.

Seven Sisters of Avalon has been a favoured series of mine since it begun. Though it's always best to start with book one of a series, as nuance will be lost, I feel these can also be enjoyed as stand-alone novels.

This series, while not gratuitous, is for adults only.

★★★★★ Jasmine of Avalon & the finale, Violet of Avalon, by Katrina Rasbold.

Their epic love story sets the stage for the adventures of their seven daughters, presented over the course of the next seven books.

It's difficult to put into words how enthralling this series was. I was hooked from book one, and deeply invested. I've read many series' incorporating Avalon, yet this is my favourite. Yes, it's better than Marion Zimmer Bradleys Avalon series, (and not just because of the controversy surrounding her.) This series kept me guessing, and like a heroin addict, wishing that other pagan novels I tried to read or re-read, could be as great. Here's an author to keep an eye out for.

This book is great as a stand-alone, or after having read the first.

As with book 1, these retellings of "Pride and Prejudice", and "Emma" with dragons are actually improvements on the classics. It's better than the other regency or victorian romances which incorporate dragons or other fantasy elements. A few surprisingly nice moments were Elizabeth and Darcy handfasting; loving the pagan vibe, plus the hint of romance developing between two who you wouldn't expect. Filled with thrills, mystery, whimsy and, of course, romance, it makes me highly anticipate the next in the series.

★★★★★ The Between State, by Joseph A White Jr

When Jeff, a computer software professional, repeatedly awakes inside realistic dreams in which he's inside the mind of a young woman, he struggles to find a rational explanation. The woman, he discovers, is real, and he becomes an unwilling time traveler periodically thrust two years into his past, where he experiences her life through her senses. An expert logician, he battles with the limitations of logic in his efforts to uncover the explanation for why he has become immersed in this new, supranatural world. Does he have a role to play in helping this woman escape her troubled past and move towards a future of serenity and hope?

I couldn't put this book down. It ends with one question still unanswered, yet ends satisfyingly. Maybe there will be a sequel, but even if there isn't, I would consider buying other subsequent books by this author.

★★★★★ Wilde Grove: Golden Heart, by Katherine Genet

A new wind is blowing. Selena makes the decision to take Rue to Wilde Grove, to get to the heart of her dreaming, for it is certain that Rue has lived before as a priestess of Wilde Grove. But what is the lesson Rue needs to learn? With Morghan giving Rue a crash course in walking between the worlds, the story behind Rue's dreaming cannot remain a mystery for long. She will walk the same paths she did long ago, in another skin, and find out exactly what Bryn, one of the first priestesses of the Forest Grove wants from her. Back in New Zealand, a loss is suffered, and a shock, one that brings Selena straight back home, for someone is screaming out to Clover from the spirit world for help that the child is too young and frightened to give.

Here's another Pagan novel series to really get into, which can be enjoyed as a standalone novel, yet is better when reading the series in order. Here's where it begins, and here's where it continues, leading to Golden Heart.

This series starts during the first year of covid (I know, I know, annoying, yet bear with me), and is a modern tale of an English village, and the relationships between the Christians and the Pagans. The characters are realisticly multi-faceted, and the stories of spirituality, mystery, healing and love are enthralling. There is none of that nonsense in many books where all of one side, or all of the other, are unrealistically painted as evil.

Then there's a prequel series, where we can see characters who were only mentioned, some of the original characters at younger ages, and new young people are added to the mix. There are several mature themes related to various forms abuse, and though not gratuitous, I recommend this series for teens and above.

★★★★★ The Other AJ Hartford, by Addison Michael

The Other AJ Hartford is an action-packed multidimensional science fiction thriller. If you like good-hearted heroines, ghostly phenomena, and nail-biting high stakes, then you’ll love Addison Michael’s mind-blowing adventure.

An entertaining time travel novel that held my attention. I liked how the romance actually adds to the story. Many novels these days, including both those for teens and those for adults, are falsely advertised as being thrillers or sci-fi, when really they are only romance novels with a bit more (too little) of real subtance added in.

And if she doesn’t escape quickly, CeeCee learns, she’ll be trapped for good. Searching for a way out, she gets lost among monsters, drug pushers, the homeless, and political upheaval, and soon finds there are those who will stop at nothing to keep her from leaving. But the byways pull people in for a reason. CeeCee must figure out why she got stuck in the first place—before her loved ones are put in danger and she loses them forever. A dark retelling of Alice in Wonderland meets Neverwhere , this contemporary fantasy will enchant Neil Gaiman and Christina Henry fans.

A solid fantasy adventure with a bit of thriller and a bit of whimsy. If there's a sequel, I'll read it.

Jinny Morai, is a foundling, wrenched from her foster parents as a young child to slave in the darkness of the Library caves of the Holtanbore, the black labyrinth under the Royal Great Tree. Every night she has a strange mental visitor who begs incessantly. One day Jinny discovers two stones, catalysts which change her life completely. One, a broken amulet hidden in a nest of leaves is much too pretty to throw away, the other, a mailed egg, is much too strange. Incredibly, a baby dragon is hatched from the strange egg. Because of this, Jinny sees daylight for the first time accompanied by Quaryk, a young Mage, who takes her up to the Bole to meet the Triad of Mages there. While her dragon, Sprout, is growing up, they live with Quaryk’s family. A year later, summoned by the Three, she returns to the bole and is raised to Magehood. There she is visited by the Woodspirit who identifies her as the one who may find the missing half of the amulet. But Jinny is anxious - as just a foundling and ex-slave, how can she find the lost half of the stone?And how can she rid Leaf of threat of the Necromancer, Dark Mage, and monster who wiped out the race of dragons long ago? Finally meeting her long-lost foster family, she finds the courage to make a decision. But is she up to the task of finding the only hope, the missing half of the stone, which will restore the Talisman, the most powerful amulet known on Leaf? And, more importantly, who is Jinny Morai, exactly?

I really enjoyed this whimsical middle-grade / teen novel. The relationship between Jinny and Sprout is really cute, and I'm curious to see what happens next in this adventure story.

When Marise Leeson gets her hands on a crystal ball, she believes her knowledge of Wicca is about to expand. The magic, however, goes horribly wrong. In short order, she’s thrown into an alternate world, attacked by a dragon, and rescued by Javeer, a young male dragon in search of a friend. Marise is desperate to get home alive. Instead of dabbling in scrying and spells, she must now use her Wicca skills to survive in Moerden―navigating rival dragon factions, riding Javeer without falling, and dodging unknown perils of an alien landscape. Through a series of adventures and mishaps, she learns that the dragons face slow extinction from a mysterious disease. Some see Marise as part of the cause. Some hope she’s a key to a cure. Marise grows up fast as her focus switches from escape from Moerden to saving the dragons. She draws upon her powers, intuition, and some help from home as she and Javeer begin a quest to solve the puzzle of the stagger. If they survive, and if their trust and courage are strong, they may succeed. If they do not, the dragons of Moerden will cease to exist.

At first, the protagonist bothered me as some of her behaviour, as a teen, seemed immature. Yet there is character growth.

The dragons seem to have more distinct characterization than Marise, yet that didn't bother me much.

One of the things I really enjoyed were the funny, endearing parts between Marise and Javeer, including after they find out...well, you'll see ;). What she does for him is great. I also enjoyed how this is a story about a human helping sick dragons, and that the way the dragons and humans communicate is unusual.

Overall, this fantasy adventure novel held my attention, so whether or not I'm able to get an ARC, I'll read the sequel.

Sausage adjusted his cloak after hopping down from the carriage, bidding Sir Carlos a good evening as the knight-turned-chauffer drove off toward the stables where the rest of the empires’ assorted conveyances would wait until the masquerade was over. It looked like he had been the last to arrive, but he didn’t mind being fashionably late. The theme of this year’s ball called for an even more creative twist to their outfits than usual, and Mythland’s royal tailor had stepped up to the challenge like never before.

Every piece of damask fabric had an intricate pattern to it, from the red-violet split sleeves of his shirt to the golden trim on his black cloak and coattails. The only matte finish was on the skeletal rib design and bottom edges of his gray corset vest. A white crystal Nether star pendant neatly fell in the center, attached to the cords that held his cloak across his shoulders. It was a genuine Mythland artifact and added the perfect touch to the costume. His partial face mask was black with pale blue filigree. The intent was to evoke an image of the Wither of Mythland, and he was extremely pleased with the result.

He kept the hood of his cloak up as he scaled the wide steps of the venue, nodding politely to the host’s guards and following an attendant through the building to the ballroom. Another attendant at the door announced his arrival to the large gathering of rulers and civilians scattered below, but Sausage was already off down the stairs heading straight for where the other members of the Wither Rose Alliance were clustered together chatting.

With the legends of the Grimlands and the Crystal Cliffs being related cautionary tales, fWhip and Gem had, for all intents and purposes, come up with costumes that reflected each other in way; fWhip’s consisted of a set of green leather armor decorated with painted glittery scale patterns, a collection of small amethysts strung around his upper arms and waist, and a violet mask covering half of his face. Gem wore a silver and gray suit that had sparkling streamers that imitated redstone wire wound over one shoulder then around that arm, and also around the opposite leg. Her mask resembled a pair of red goggles without the lenses in.

Then there was Pearl, clad in a dress of Mythland make as well – otherwise she would have simply worn her favorite battle armor. The skirt was shaped by overlapping strips of brocade with large embossed sunflowers, allowing her plenty of freedom of movement, with a practical bodice and thin straps that had smaller flowers embroidered onto them; her mask was a cluster of laurel leaves, gilded around all of the edges like their namesake empire. Pearl was her own legend, and looked as intimidating as any Amazon Queen regardless of fancy clothes.

She greeted Sausage first, then the four of them caught up on the goings-on of their respective realms. They moved to the buffet tables after a while, continuing to chat over food and drink. As much as the event was meant to be a meeting of all empires, there was still something of a divide in the room. Even when the dance floor opened, they kept to their group; Sausage automatically took the first dance with Pearl, then traded partners to fWhip and then to Gem, all of them laughing and either complimenting or ribbing on each other’s skill in turn, though remaining good-natured.

The Nether star pendant glinted in the candlelight, and for a second Sausage caught another gleam from the corner of his eye. He paused with hand outstretched toward fWhip and looked again for a possible source. His gaze skimmed past the towering Ocean Queen and her husband, past the red wings of the ruler of The Lost Empire, and landed on another figure who didn’t have wings so much as a cloak made of white feathers. On their arm hung loose gossamer sleeves and a silver vambrace with gold accents all over. Their costume resembled an orange robe under a white tabard, laced on the side with braided yellow cord, part of an orange fabric belt visible from that angle.

Sausage could see their mask was also orange, with gilded patterns over it and an arrangement of red to yellow feathers like small wings to the side, just barely concealing pointed ears. A thin filigree circlet held a small, open oval of gold at the back of their head, and he wasn’t sure if that had been what caught the light but he felt an inexplicable urge to find out.

Without a word he pulled back his hand and set off through the crowd of other dancers.

fWhip, hand still raised, stared after him. “That…was weird.” He lowered his hand and looked at Gem and Pearl. “Did anyone else find that weird, or is it just me?”

Gem stood on her tiptoes to try to follow Sausage’s movement through the crowd. “No, even for him that was kind of weird. Wait, is he going over to Scott??”

fWhip immediately looked over as well. “Oh, that could be trouble. We haven’t hit the time of night for thinly veiled pleasantries with old enemies. What is he thinking?”

They watched Sausage abruptly stop a good meter shy of the elven king, but he did seem to still be staring at him, and Pearl murmured, “I’m not sure he’s thinking at all…”

The ruler of Rivendell had mastered the art of casual talk with the overabundance of humans who attended royal functions, humoring their haste to accomplish things in a shorter time frame. In more ways than one he was grateful to have Jimmy, Lizzie, and Joel in his circle, beings with a greater life expectancy and a little more patience for the flow of time.

It was, however, something immediate that made him feel someone’s eyes on his back and he glanced over his feathered shoulder to see the King of Mythland staring at him from the edge of the dance floor. Scott tried to return to his conversation with the handful of local nobles but the feeling continued. “Excuse me,” he said, and pushed his drink into the hands of the person next to him. The nobles exchanged glances and began gossiping about a potential confrontation.

As Scott approached, Sausage could now see that incongruous amidst all the precious metals was a thin steel necklace with a flat medallion hanging from it. Affixed to the center was a piece of amber, within which appeared to be a small singed feather. Sausage stared at it, then raised his eyes to Scott’s face as the elf halted in front of him, looking slightly annoyed. Sausage sketched a low bow then held out his hand, upright with palm facing outward. “May I have this dance?”

The Nether star glinted, drawing Scott’s attention. His demeanor suddenly mellowed and he raised his hand to hold his palm against Sausage’s, folding his other arm behind his back. Sausage did the same, and they joined the rest of the dancers, falling into the slow rhythm of the waltz being played.

Meanwhile, from her vantage point as the tallest person in the room, Lizzie had noticed the turn of events and was making a sour face. “Little brother,” she called to Jimmy, who was laughing with Pixandria’s ruler about something, “Are you aware that the King of Mythland just stole your husband-to-be?”

Jimmy turned, still chuckling. “What? Scott would never! He’s only ever danced with me at…these…balls.” He now stared in shock, seeing what Lizzie was pointing at, and Joel squawked out a laugh at his dumbfounded expression.

Oblivious, Sausage and Scott only had eyes for each other, or rather each other’s adornments. “I know you, Angel,” Sausage said succinctly, executing a quick turn that Scott followed, their hands staying even.

A few moves later Scott said, “You’re not as dark as you seem, Wither.”

The tempos changed on the next waltz but they remained in perfect step.

Sausage’s gaze traced the shapes in the circlet across Scott’s brow. “You wear the gold that was once of your eyes.”

A turn, a bow, then three steps later Scott said, “You have your soul exposed, plain on your face.”

“And what of your soul?”

Expressions unchanging despite the comments, they then danced in silence until the set ended. They stared at each other as the next set began, then this time Scott bowed and offered his hand to initiate another round.

Lizzie pulled both Joel and Jimmy to the floor with her, Pix following just to balance out their numbers – only to end up partnered with Joel as Lizzie practically dragged her brother in the general direction of the two oddly matched rulers. “You need to cut in!” she insisted. “Use your spine! Be bold! Sausage can’t just do that!”

“Well, I don’t want to be rude.” Jimmy avoided looking toward them. “Maybe Scott has a reason. Maybe there’s finally peace between them? I can’t just interrupt that!”

She smiled despite his reluctance, fondly brushing her hand over the fins at the side of his face. “Just go rescue him again, little brother. Treaties can come later. Every dance is your privilege as a betrothed.”

“Okay. Okay, fine, you’re right. Umm…” Jimmy turned to skim the crowd. “Wait, where did they go?”

Lizzie looked around as well but even she saw no trace of them. “I don’t… know.”

“Well, it’s official, they have business to discuss and I’m not going to bother them!” Jimmy pivoted and zipped back toward Joel and Pix.

Lizzie frowned and cupped her hands to her mouth to call after him, “Okay! But let’s just hope neither of them turns up dead!”

Scott didn’t entirely understand why he was still holding onto Sausage’s hand or why he was following him out of the ballroom into a curtained seating alcove off the main hallway. He felt the medallion burning warm against his chest in spite of two layers of costume and an undershirt. But when the King of Mythland turned toward him again and his eyes fell from Sausage’s face to the Nether star, still shining despite the muted light, the strange feeling of familiarity clouded his mind once more – the same as when Sausage’s gaze landed on the medallion.

“Just when I thought I would never see you again, Angel,” Sausage said and gently pulled on the elf’s hand to bring him closer. He let go and slipped his arms around Scott, who closed his eyes, and then he kissed him.

There was a split second of confusion, then a fluttering of his heart drowned it out. Scott returned the kiss then leaned into his embrace, getting lost in whatever this feeling was. He had never expected the brash king to have such a tender touch, hand threading over his cyan hair to rest under the decorative halo.

Scott placed his hand against Sausage’s chest, fingers brushing the beveled center point of the white jewel. He drew back to catch his breath. “Is this why the stories were removed from history?” he wondered out loud. “An angel, involved in a forbidden romance with a demonic soul-stealer from the Nether?”

“A demon from one perspective, maybe. A ferryman from another. And maybe just simply cursed, not given a choice but to steal. Don’t you remember?” Sausage murmured. He brought his own hand between them to touch the medallion.

Scott felt it grow warm again. “A curse of shadows and hunger.”

“Yes.”

“Broken by sacrifice of a life, not just a soul.”

“Yes.”

“A sacrifice brought about by compassion.” Scott studied Sausage’s mask, then felt a pang of unknown guilt. He leaned down to kiss him again, light and lingering.

Sausage smiled up at him afterward, eyes soft. “I loved you with all my withered heart.”

“I know.”

Scott then returned the look sadly. This wasn’t him, this wasn’t Sausage. He pressed his hand against the Nether star and then pulled away from the embrace, although it made him feel an ache inside to do so.  He removed his mask and circlet. “I can’t be your angel anymore, Wither.” He set them down on the cushioned bench, then lifted the medallion from around his neck and held the chain out toward Sausage. “But let them be together.”

Sausage’s lips parted to speak, but instead he accepted the necklace and placed it over his own head, tucking the medallion under the top of his corset. The light inside the Nether star dimmed back to the same as any normal jewel, and something changed in his eyes. He looked Scott up and down, then graciously bowed and left the alcove.

Scott put his mask back on and fixed his halo into place, then went off to search for the Codfather and come up with an apology – if not an explanation – for why he had disappeared.

The Wither Rose Alliance had given up theorizing about their missing member’s absence and merely hoped he returned unscathed. They were back at the buffet tables when Sausage abruptly reached between fWhip and Gem to grab a pastry puff and loudly proclaim that he was starving. Pearl made a teasing comment and they laughed, but the other two traded a glance and wondered what could possibly have happened that he now had Scott’s necklace.

Ari watched in fear as the Three Caballeros were blown away by Felldrake's ominous shockwave.

Although the Aracuan Bird had been a distance away from the battlefield, he could already feel just how powerful the attack was. He couldn't bring himself to imagine how painful it must have been to be hit head-on.

The Three Caballeros lay on the floating rock, exhausted and disheartened. Slowly and sorely, Panchito lifted his head, Donald and José following. If it wasn't for their magical armours, the three warriors doubted they could still have the strength to keep conscious. When they did open their eyes, however, they found that Felldrake was nowhere in sight, much to everyone's shock and confusion.

Ari anxiously scanned through the distorted space, hoping to catch sight of their enemy, so that he could warn his friends of the incoming attack. In such injured states, they could not possibly take another impact.

But before Ari could open his beak and tell his friends to run, violet magic concentrated rapidly in the void just behind the three warriors, manifesting into the enormous form of the dark wizard. The Three Caballeros gasped in shock, as they simultaneously looked behind them, just to see their enemy raising a sharply-clawed hand, about to slam down on them.

"Die, Caballeros!"

In those few seconds, shorter than anyone but Ari could remember, it was as if time had paused, and space had turned monochrome.

His eyes widened in despair, tears long accumulated streamed down his pink, feathered cheeks.

Ari felt as though his heart dropped down to the deepest, darkest abyss.

"I...I can't do anything..."

Ari remembered saying the exact same thing just a few weeks ago, when Xandra came back alone from Mexico, bringing the grim tidings that the Three Caballeros had been banished to the underworld. Of course he didn't show anyone his tears. He never showed anyone his feelings easily.

But he did hold them in until he was alone, and then tried his best to hide his swollen eyes and tear-stained face afterwards.

Somehow, Ari still managed to put up a forced smile - and got away with it - when the nieces asked him to participate in an amateur séance to bring Panchito back. They didn't know how much it had hurt him, by asking him to take part in an obviously futile attempt to "save" his dead friends, and then having said attempt fail in his face.

Actually, that wasn't the only time Ari had said those words to himself, nor experienced that dreadful, helpless sentiment. That wasn't even the first time that had happened.

It had happened once, twice...and it's going to happen again. Right in front of him. And again, he couldn't do a single thing.

The ones he loved would be taken away from him, and Ari could only watch the tragedy unfold in his teary eyes.

"They were right. My luck with friendship is pathetic."

"My friendships never end well."

Ari remembered the sneering of the Amazon birds, mocking him for always being the lonely clown of the jungle.

The lonely Aracuan Bird, crying alone on the jungle floor, where no one could hear his weeping.

But hidden within the forest of memories, Ari also saw smiles. Bright, friendly smiles...of an old Aracuan Bird...an elderly duck...a rooster, a parrot and a young duck.

They were all smiling, calling Ari's name, giving him a warm, big hug...They accompanied him when he was the most vulnerable. They held his hand when he was lost in the sea of fate. They gave colours and meanings to his life. They were his family, his friends.

The ones he wanted to protect.

"And I'll change that!"

"What?!" Felldrake yelled in shock. Just when he thought he had finally got his mortal enemies, something intercepted his razor-sharp claws. "This barrier! This golden barrier...!"

Donald opened his eyes when he heard a loud clash but felt no pain. What was playing in front of him left his eyes even more widened.

"The magical barrier...It's the one that protected us back at the cabana!" Donald shouted, pointing his sword in front of him. Felldrake was straining to get through the obstacle with his claws, but the barrier kept repelling his attack, the two types of magic clashing together. "And the power must be stronger than before! Even Felldrake can't pierce through the barrier in his awakened form!"

"But...but we aren't at the cabana!" Panchito held his bronze spear in his trembling hands. "How did it get here?! José?"

Panchito turned to his parrot friend for answers, only to find him staring into the distance in astonishment. Upon looking at that direction, Panchito and Donald too stared in awe.

Clad in a golden armour not unlike those of the Caballeros, Ari stood on a floating boulder, his eyes showing his unyielding resolve. His attire resembled a mix of a warrior's armour and a sorcerer's robe, in a colour scheme that was magenta and gold intertwined: A pair of deep purple leather boots with tips of gold; A magenta velvet robe reinforced with golden metal plates; Topped off with a purple leather wizard's hat, decorated with a wide, gold-plated brim.

And in his feathered hand was a magic staff of pure gold, standing even taller than the Aracuan Bird. Its tip was radiating a magenta-coloured aura, as was its user, his scarlet crest flowing in the gale generated from the impact.

"Ari...my friend..." José whispered at the unbelievable scene in front of him. Ari held firmly onto his weapon, channeling his magic to the protective barrier standing between his friends and their opponent.

"The magic protecting the cabana...The barrier shielding the Caballeros...It was all the work of this little bird!" Felldrake growled in shock and frustration, the golden barrier showing no signs of even cracking slightly. "To think the old Coot had such a partner...!"

Ari bit his beak at the mention of his old friend, tears flowing out of his determined eyes.

"At that time, I left him...I let go of his hand, because of my cowardice...I wasn't there with him to the end, because I was scared..."

"But this time...This time...!"

"I will not run away...! I will not fear anymore...!"

"Donald! José! Panchito!" Ari shouted out amidst the commotion. "I won't let him break through the barrier! I won't let him hurt you anymore!"

The Caballeros were surprised, that the presumedly unintelligible Aracuan Bird could speak, and even more so that he spoke with such resolve and determination.

"Go! Friends!"

Then, they saw the magenta aura surrounding Ari spreading to each of them, changing to match the colour of their respective magic upon contact. It was a gentle glow, covering their holy armours and divine weapons, making them shine bright in vibrant colours.

José felt his fatigue and fear fade away in an instant, replaced with vigour and valour. The pain he had experienced melted away into the colourful magic, his injuries fully healed in no time.

José's gazes shifted between his two friends, their surprised expressions telling him they were also experiencing the same enhancing effect.

"This...is Ari's power...?" José turned to the Aracuan Bird, their eyes meeting each other. Ari gave him a nod and an encouraging smile.

"Thank you, Ari..." José tipped his silver helmet as a wordless gratitude, before grasping his scimitar tightly in his gauntlets. He looked at Donald and Panchito, both holding their weapons in ready.

With a powerful leap, the three warriors charged into action, the sorcerer supporting them from the side.

Ari held onto his metal staff, watching his friends return to the battlefield with a bittersweet smile.

"Gramps...Clinton...and the Caballeros..."

"You have showed me the light of hope...You have saved me from loneliness and despair..."

"And now, I'll be the one to protect...!"

Though his tears kept falling down, the firm resolution in his eyes was unswerving. He raised his golden staff, its magical gleam shining in the boundless void, bright as a supernova.

"I won't let anyone die in front of me anymore! This time, I'll save you all!"

"This time, I'll change that fate!"

Circe is the daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Perseis. Circe is a powerful witch and former princess of Colchis. As such, she married the god Hades, but their marriage did not last and Hecate was demoted as handmaiden to her former husband's new wife. Because of this, she left the realm of the gods and agreed to render her soul to her most devoted servant Circe. This caused Circe to attain her current goddess-level of power and immortality.[10]

When Hecate transferred her soul to Circe, she said the words: Upon the death of witch and the birth of witch, Hecate, by name and choice, shall repossess her soul. In addition to being goddess of witchcraft, Hecate is also a goddess of the moon. When Circe learned that Wonder Woman shared her name with moon goddess Diana, she decided that Hecate's cryptic warning must refer to her. Fearing that Diana would steal Hecate's soul and power, Circe decided to destroy her.

Once Diana learned of Hecate's pronouncement, she too felt it pertained to her, but of course Diana has no desire to have the soul of Hecate possessing her body. This issue is central to the conflict between the two women.

War of the GodsEdit

Circe's most ambitious gambit was inciting war between the various pantheons of gods throughout the DC Multiverse, becoming known as the War of the Gods. Circe's overall ploy was to gain the power of all the warring pantheons after they had defeated or destroyed one another. Another plot of the war was to disgrace Diana and the Amazons in the eyes of the world by portraying them as terrorists, allying herself with the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall to this effect. True to her nature, Circe eventually betrayed them as well. Over the course of the war, Circe succeeded in killing Hermes, who had since been in a severely weakened state from being away from Olympus for so long and temporarily devolving Diana herself out of existence by reverting her back into the clay from which she had been formed. Finally realizing the truth of Circe's deceptions, Earth's heroes launched an assault on New Olympus, which Circe had conquered and pitted the gods of the Olympian and Roman pantheons against them. Elsewhere, with the aid of the Spectre, Deadman, and the Phantom Stranger, Diana was restored to life and in a concerted effort with Donna Troy, used the amulet of Harmonia to open a portal into an alternate universe where the Titans of Myth resided. This caused the soul of Hecate herself to withdraw from Circe's body, which rapidly aged and crumbled to dust. Hecate then attempted to take possession of Diana, but was destroyed by the Lasso of Truth.[11]

Since then practically all of his baby fat had melted away, he’d grown half a foot, and had leaped over the finish line of puberty coming out the other side lean and lithe. All of the height and dominance of his father with the beauty and charm of his mother. 

“Well, I suppose mother did plan ahead with my looks while I was incubating. Probably did have a professional design my bone structure.” He wouldn’t put it past her at least.

Edna released his face and climbed off the table she had jumped up on to get to him. Back when he was ten or thirteen, he didn’t remember her being so staggeringly short, but now the height difference was alarming. 

“Truly a work of art, I must give credit where credit is do.” She walked past him towards his father, who was smiling with his hands in his pockets. “You will do nicely.”

“So glad my son will work for you Edna.” 

“Credit does not go to you,” She said, walking out the door, the two men following her. “From the story I heard, you quite literally had nothing to do with his creation.” Damian watched the woman walk and couldn’t help but compare it to the trot of a proud dog, which reminded him of Titus who was sitting back at the hotel all by himself. “Now Damian, my assistant will take your measurements so we can make sure all of the outfits fit perfectly for the photoshoots. We’ll be having it in the next couple of months.”

“Alfred could have done that back in Gotham.” He mused, following his father’s lead by resting his hands in the pockets of his jacket. “I didn’t have to miss school to come with you Father.”

He could hear the taller man laugh. “Just last year you nearly took my head off when I wanted to send you to the academy.” He was catching up to Edna now. “You should have seen him, we had to bribe him just to get him to go quietly.”

“Well, at least he’s enjoying it now.” She said.

Yes, he was very much enjoying school. Which he father appreciated, but Damian doubted he’d appreciate it quite as much if he knew his class was full of metahumans, demi-gods and demonically influenced children. Gotham Academy had not been what he expected but he did enjoy it. The pure chaos and calculatingly cruel aura of his class was something to behold. They may only be Sophomores but they were feared throughout the entire Gotham and Metropolis Educational System.

“I like to learn.” He said simply, walking closely behind the two. “What’s your collection about Enda?” He asked, ignoring the look his father shot him when he left off the family classifier. 

“I was visiting Greece last summer and was struck with inspiration upon hearing about the twins.” She pushed up her glasses as they walked into a studio space, a professionally dressed eighteen-year-old waiting for them. “This is Violet Parr, my assistant.” Edna introduced quickly. “Violet, be a dear and take Damian’s measurements.” She was y’all and very thin, with a round face and inky black hair hanging around her shoulders. Her eyes were large and a soft shade of lavender-blue. They reminded him of his cousin.

Damian followed the girl’s lead as she led him to a slightly raised platform and began pushing his arms straight out, a position that’d make her job easier. He’d had his measurements taken several times in his life, the most recent was when he was getting fitted for a new Robin Uniform, now that it was assumed he was finished growing.

“I can think of a few myths with Greek Twins.” Bruce said, sitting down in a white egg shaped chair. “Which ones inspired you?”

“Apollo and Artemis!” Edna chimed. “The Sun and Moon.” She twirled around, suddenly two sets of chains, golden and silver, in her hands. “The color scheme alone has been clogging my head for months!”

“Chains?” He heard his father ask.

“You think of me as an  Apollo?” Damian asked, ego flaring slightly.

“Oh no.” She set the chains down on the coffee table. “You will be my male Artimes. I have another model in mind for Apollo, I’m in talks with his father currently.”

“Artemis?” He and his father echoed. 

The Greek Goddess? Artemis? Damnian had met Artemis on a handful of occasions thanks to Diana, and he could attest he looked nothing like the amazon, even if she were male he still wouldn’t look like her. He didn’t even act like her. And he also felt like portraying her as a man was insulting her legacy quite a lot.

“Yes! One of them, I am planning to have a female set of my twins as well.” She smiled to herself, turning towards the desk in the room. She traced a picture frame with her finger. “And I have the perfect model to be Damian’s counterpart.”

The hair on the back of Damian’s neck stood, he could practically see the same reaction course through his father. They both knew immediately who Edna was referring to, because Damian only had one counterpart. One person who, when with, he felt an equalness or sense of yin and yang from. His blue eyed half.

His father would gush about his niece, really his cousin, whenever he got an opportunity to. Sometimes she would send him things, or make him a nice suit jacket or tie. So when he wore something the girl had made for him, he never missed a chance to network for her. He would never give out her name, just talk about how brilliant and kind and professional she was. Whenever she was ready to go public with her talent and family connections, Wayne Enterprises support would be evident. 

She was of course, all the things his father described her as, and so much more. But to their small inner family, she was also notorious for her relationship with Damian. Dick often cooed about how she helped him to act his age, and embrace being a young and childlike, which was just a nice way to excuse their pranks. Most of his family often failed to notice the utter awfulness of the girl’s mind and just what Damian did to it.

She was terribly clever, had been her whole life, or at least as long as Damian had known her. She was also hilariously sassy, never before had he come across someone who could rival Alfred’s one liners. His cousin was one of the few who would actually make him laugh. She was downright evil when his influence was added. And while she did helped him act his age, she also brought out a lot of his more devilish qualities. They were a lethal combination and everyone who had ever seen them interact knew it.

“Isn't she a tad preoccupied?” Bruce asked. “What with all of Hawkmoth’s rampages? I highly doubt Marinette could, or would even be comfortable with leaving Paris.” Damian glanced warily at Violet for a moment as she started the measurements of his legs. When the girl caught his gaze she gave him a strong reassuring smile and a small nodded. A super then, he quickly concluded. He knew Edna employed a handful of the ones she trusted.

“Oh, I’m sure I can convince her.” Edna’s smirk was deadly. “And if not, I’ll just have to have a chat with an old friend of mine.” She snatched another picture frame from off the desk. Damian could barely see the photo from his current angle, he was only able to make out the pattern of a Hawaiian shirt.

unfinished brooke x katya hatefuck fic

hi yall :^) so ive had this sitting in my drafts for a WHILE and ive barely dented the actual planned plot but still i felt like it was kind of a waste of what i did write to not ?? idk do something with it? this was originally written for AQ’s rarepair event but irl stuff got in the way so it never got finished, and i kinda lost the inspo to finish it (for now? idk) so here it is, posted unedited in however it was when i last touched it

brooke x katya hatefuck, (well, planned, i obv hadnt written that far) inspired by pics of trixie and brooke together that one time they were weirdly hanging out a lot irl and that one outfit brooke has that looks like that one outfit katya has the polkadot one u know it

“Ugh, I swear, Vi! She really has something against me! I think she hates me!”

Katya punctuates her sentence with a flail of her arms for emphasis before flopping back onto her bed. Violet just rolls her eyes at her roommate’s dramatics, as per usual. This is the third time they’ve had this conversation this week.

“So she’s a little icy, what of it? It’s not like you’re not used to having a mega bitch around, you live with me,” Violet responds plainly, not even bothering to look up from her laptop, “and I don’t think anybody could hate you, Kat.”

Katya huffs at that. “No, I swear, she hates me.”

Katya Zamolodchikova is absolutely sure of three things in her university life: One, Trixie Mattel is her best friend. Two, nothing gets in between her and Trixie. Three, Brooke Lynn Hytes is absolutely making her best fucking attempt.

Katya and Trixie had met last year, Katya being a sophomore in visual arts and Trixie a freshman in musical theater, when Katya had accidentally crashed Ginger’s (kind of pathetic) attempt at being a tour guide for the freshmen of her course. They’ve only known each other for a year, but ever since then the two quickly became inseparable and a year had felt like a lifetime. All of their friends knew, and Katya held it close to her heart, that nothing could possibly stand in their way. That is, until the beginning of this semester.

Trixie had been elected as class representative at the start of their sophomore year, which did not surprise Katya one bit. But that meant that when Canadian exchange student Brooke Lynn Hytes had arrived for the semester, it was Trixie’s job to show her around and make her feel welcomed. And being that Brooke’s degree in classical dance meant her and Trixie had quite a few overlapping classes, the two hit it off and had gotten closer and closer since. It’s only half way through the semester, yet Katya feels as though she’s slowly becoming more and more of a background character in Trixie’s life. They still text each other when they can, but hangout times have slowly grown increasingly thin and so has Katya’s sanity. Not that it’s Trixie’s fault, of course…

“I can’t explain it. But I promise, it’s almost like she’s purposefully occupying Trixie from me! Every time it looks like we might get a chance to even just talk, she’s there coming round the corner asking Trixie for help in one of their classes or for show recs or whatever. And she always looks me dead in the eye, with her stupid fucking smirk, like she knows what she just did! I can’t explain the feeling I get when I see her!”

Katya’s hit full ranting steam now, half hanging off her bed still flailing as animated as ever.

Violet shuts her laptop and turns to face her. “Mama, sounds like you hate her. Sure it’s not just in your head because you’re jealous the amazon’s occupying your barbie?”

There’s a beat of silence. “Jealous? I guess?” Katya scrunches up her face and sits up. “I mean, how could I not be? With her stupid long legs and her flowing blonde hair, like god, Vi, she’s practically perfect! And have you seen her dance?”

Katya turns to pose her question, but Violet is just staring, giving her a look she can’t decipher. She continues,

“So then, fine, of course I’m jealous, but that’s because Trix is my best friend. I barely see her anymore, and when I do she’s always there and I just get so riled up! And I’m sure Trix has started to notice because god I just can’t stand it when she’s near, it just sets me alight in an awful way. I’ve never felt this way about anybody before!” And it’s true, Katya really does not think of herself as someone capable of fully hating someone else. But by god, is Brooke really testing that.

Violet scoffs, turning away to open her laptop once more. “Look Mary, all I gotta say is that that’s an awful lot of emotion for some best friend jealousy. Also, you have a lecture starting in ten minutes.”

Fuck! Katya checks her watch and immediately jumps up to scramble for her belongings, deeply thankful for her roommate’s type A tendencies yet internally chastising herself for allowing her ranting to consume her time like that. She quickly kisses Violet on the cheek and bids her farewell before putting on her boots and heading out of their dorm room to make her best effort to speed walk to class.

But as luck would have it, not that Katya has a lot of it, she quite literally walks right into the subject of their prior conversation. Well, speak of the devils…

“Oh! Trixie, hi!” Katya laughs, immediately reacting to steady Trixie from where Katya had almost knocked her over with the door. From the way she was standing, she figured she had opened the door just as Trixie was about knock.

“Katya! Thank god, I was worried you wouldn’t be in,” Trixie smiles back brightly, smoothing her fluffy golden hair back into place. (Not that it’s ever really out of place, Katya thinks to herself.) 

Katya smiles at her, a sight for sore eyes she thinks, but when she realizes Brooke is standing at the end of the hall waiting for Trixie, her smile doesn’t quite reach her eyes. Whether Trixie noticed Katya’s tension or not, she didn’t let on. At least Brooke had the decency to wait at a reasonable distance.

“Uh, yeah, I was just heading out though,” Katya replies, trying her best to look sympathetic. She doesn’t mind that she’s running late anymore, just feels bad she even has to go. “But did you need something?”

Trixie looks equally as sympathetic. “Yeah, uh, listen, I’m really sorry. I know we haven’t been able to hang recently and I’m really sorry for that, midterms and all…”

“Hey, it’s alright, I knew you were busy. It’s no problem, really.” That’s a lie.

“But now that it’s over, let’s celebrate! Let me make it up to you? Be my date to the Edwards party tonight?”

Katya’s smile softens. As much as she was planning to trade in the party for a well-deserved movie night in with Violet and Pearl, she finds she really can’t say no to Trixie, especially not when she’s looking at her like an apologetic puppy. Whipped.

“Down for anything with you, Barbie. Meet you at the dorm hall at 8?”

Trixie squeals and picks Katya up by the middle, “AAAAAAAH yes!! See you bitch!!”

Katya squirms violently to be put down but laughs it off anyway. She really can’t be too mad at her best friend.

“Anyway, I gotta run, see you later Trix!” She rushes to hug Trixie quickly once more before escaping as briskly yet casually as she can out the door. This fails her when all semblance of casualty is lost as she passes the point where Brooke is, all tall and blonde and beautiful even just standing around. As she passes, her gaze quite obviously steels ahead to avoid looking Brooke in the eye, but she can’t fail to catch the quite obvious smug smirk the Canadian has posed on her painted lips.

Katya managed to make it to class with only 5 minutes late, thankfully just as her professor was entering the other door. She plops down into her usual seat with an audible groan and immediately drops her head in her hands.

Brooke. Stupid fucking Brooke Lynn Hytes. Lately, Katya’s wandering thoughts always go back to her. There hasn’t been a time where her idle time hasn’t been haunted by a certain ballerina chipping away at her precious concentration. She sees perfect long blonde hair, icy blue eyes, and tone legs that go all the way up. 

If she’s being completely honest with herself, she is just a bit jealous of Brooke but not for the reasons Violet insinuates. I mean, sure, she misses Trixie to bits. But that’s only one of the many straws on the camel that is Katya’s completely rational anger. 

It’s not that she’s perfect, either, but that sure adds another straw. Seemingly introverted, but able to capture the hearts of anyone in her path through quick and honest charm. Graceful and poised, where Katya is not, and tall and curvy, where Katya is not. Katya really doesn’t understand how someone can attend 7am dance classes with a flawless mug and still leave rehearsals with not an eyelash out of place, it’s inhuman.

No, it’s that no matter how much others testify on her behalf, Katya does not understand it. She doesn’t know what she did, but she has somehow done something to aggravate Brooke against her, and it bothers her endlessly that she doesn’t even know what she did to incur such spite. Katya doesn’t see any of the charm or kindness that others profess, only smug smirks and cocky passive-aggressive jabs and a seemingly passionate desire to find any way she can to poke Katya’s buttons and prompt some kind of response. She’s lucky Katya has a lot more self control than most, and she’s restrained herself from biting back thus far.

She thinks back to the first time she spotted Brooke, on the first day of the semester when Katya had gotten bored and decided to drop in on Trixie’s representative duties despite explicit instructions not to intrude. She had found her in one of the gardens of the student commons, and instinctively made her way to run up and tackle her before realizing Trixie wasn’t alone and stopping dead in her tracks.

Trixie was sitting next to someone Katya didn’t recognize, which was a surprise in itself because Katya knew next to everybody personally in their modestly sized arts college.  The girl was sitting next to Trixie on a bench, both hands holding one of Trixie’s own as Trixie appeared to animatedly be telling some story. Trixie then finally noticed Katya frozen standing awkwardly at some distance and paused in the middle of her speech to yell at Katya and becon her over. 

“Katya! This is Brooke Lynn, a Canadian exchange student for the semester. Brooke, this is Katya, my best friend!”

Brooke lazily shifted her gaze from Trixie to give Katya the once over, glancing her up and down. Whatever she saw, she suddenly stood up and crowded into Katya’s space, gazing down at her intensely directly from the advantage their clear height difference gave her.

“Well, it’s certainly nice to meet you… Katya.” 

And on her lips, the same painted red smirk. The same stupid smirk that would continuously haunt her until…

“Kat, you with us girl?” Hissed Pearl in her ear, jabbing her hard in the side.
