Farwell, Stuart

Today we have lost one of the best storytellers of a generation. Of all the people in the world who have passed in the last year, this is the one that hits me the hardest. If you don't already listen, go download an episode of The Vinyl Cafe, and hear one of the most loving, human pieces of radio history. It will touch you, and break your heart, and make you laugh as hard as any comedy special. I only hope that one day I can weave words like the master, Stuart McLean.

"Vinyl Café" storyteller Stuart McLean died on February 15, 2017. Two days later I had a presentation in Ottawa for the Elementary Teachers Federation. I noted his passing during my remarks and many in the audience wanted to talk to me about him afterwards. I think the reason that I and they felt that connection to McLean was that he and I were tapping the same vein for our life's work: the compelling humanity that binds us all together as Canadians that is found in even the smallest stories.⁠ ⁠ A week later I was delivering a keynote for the Tourism Industry Association of BC and again felt compelled to talk about Stuart McLean. Photographer Doug Nicholson was with me and we were doing portraits of attendees after the show. This gentleman stepped up for his portrait and introduced himself as Alistair McLean, Stuart's younger brother.⁠ ⁠ Alistair's was at the event as National Director of Hostelling International Canada but the timeliness of our convergence in the same spot was a story that surely would have intrigued his older brother. I told him I'd love to recognize Stuart somehow in the project and he asked if I knew Jess Milton.⁠ ⁠ Jess was Stuart's producer/roadmanager/confidante/secondbrain/collaborator for more than a decade. I knew her from my time at CBC. In fact she had brought me into Stuart's office when I was showing Voyageur around the building in the days after its debut back in 2006 so Stuart did actually meet Voyageur. One of my favourite Christmas traditions is to listen to Vinyl Cafe Christmas stories. Sadly, this year is the first without Stuart Mclean. I felt I had to make this as a tribute to his memory - he touched the hearts and lives of so many people with his stories and his spirit. He was a kind soul and he will be sorely missed. If anyone is interested in a print, I will be submitting this to Kickstarter's make/100 in January and donating proceeds to cancer research (more info to follow). Thanks again, Stuart.
