Winter-Proofing Your Deck in Kitchener: Why Vinyl Deck Coverings Are a Must
Winter in Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge can be beautiful and brutal. While snow-laden rooftops and frosty mornings add a magical touch to the season, they also present challenges for homeowners, particularly in outdoor spaces like decks.
Winter can wreak havoc on your deck without proper preparation, leading to costly repairs in the spring. Vinyl deck coverings are a practical and stylish solution for ensuring your deck withstands harsh winters.
AM Group Exteriors is committed to helping you protect your outdoor investments with expert vinyl deck installation services.
Why Winter-Proofing Your Deck Matters
Your deck is more than just an extension of your home; it’s a space for relaxation, entertaining, and creating memories. But winter’s freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and ice can cause significant damage, including:
Cracks and Splinters: Cold weather can cause wood to expand and contract, leading to cracks and splinters.
Rot and Mold Growth: Moisture from snow and ice can seep into the deck’s surface, encouraging rot and mold.
Structural Weakness: Prolonged exposure to harsh conditions can weaken your deck’s structure, compromising its safety.
Investing in winter-proofing measures, like vinyl deck installation, can save you from these headaches while enhancing your deck’s durability and aesthetic appeal.
The Benefits of Vinyl Deck Coverings
Vinyl deck coverings are not just a trend but a game-changer for homeowners in Waterloo. Here’s why they’re a must-have for winter:
Waterproof Protection: Vinyl deck coverings provide a seamless, waterproof barrier that prevents moisture from seeping into the deck. This is crucial in winter when snow and ice are unavoidable.
Durability: Unlike traditional wood or composite materials, vinyl is resistant to cracking, peeling, and warping, even in extreme temperatures.
Low Maintenance: Say goodbye to sanding, staining, and sealing. Vinyl deck coverings are easy to clean and require minimal upkeep.
Enhanced Safety: Vinyl surfaces are slip-resistant, reducing the risk of accidents during icy conditions.
Aesthetic Appeal: Available in various colors and patterns, vinyl deck coverings can complement your home’s style while adding a modern touch to your outdoor space.

Exciting updates in my life: my week of vacation has so far involved working physically in the house and or yard so hard that I’m in agony by bedtime. I have two modes, On and Off, and it’s been an On week, in large part because I’ve realized my thinning hair may well be due to my Wellbutrin so I’ve dropped the dosage and every time I change a psych med my anxiety goes bananas for weeks to months at a time. So instead of “relaxing” or “finishing one goddamn fic, what the fuck, me” I’ve (properly) removed the spare room’s asbestos popcorn ceiling and been forced to learn FAR more than I want to about ceilings and drywall given the state of what was covered up by the popcorn. Yesterday afternoon for a break from the Ceiling of Doom I cleaned the back deck that I couldn’t clean for a YEAR while we waited for the contractor to actually fix the dangerous structural instability. It took me four hours of continuous physical labor. There’s a lot wrong with me, but I AM getting biceps, which is delightful since I don’t like exercise per se and usually have the muscle tone of cooked linguine.
However! Tomorrow I’m going to sand down the joint compound I had to redo in a few places today after sanding the first time badly, and then! Then I shall prime it. Whenever that dries, time to attempt skim coating. Then realize I’ve failed and have to try that again one or two times before eventually sanding it again, priming it again, and finally, please God, painting it. Then painting the walls. Then painting, cutting mitered corners in, and gluing up the high density foam crown molding. Then yanking the carpets and learning how to lay vinyl flooring planks that will be impervious to the slings and arrows of senior dogs. It’s going to be a while. But one day, I will have that room in a condition where I can paint, miter cut, and install the baseboards. And after that? Build the FUCKING GUEST BED that has been IN BOXES IN THE GARAGE for TWO YEARS. over two years now! Jesus Christ.
I also finally managed to get rid of the plastic blinds I hated in the bedroom and put up curtain rods and curtains. And put up two bird feeders outside, including installing the hooks under the eves. I have been busy. Just not with writing. Also I’ve been deliberately avoiding tumblr bc it tends to make my mood worse rather than better; tragic. But sometimes I open the app and instead of checking notifications I just scroll and reblog and I can pretend that no one is being an asshole on the Internet.

DID YOU KNOW THAT? Muhammad Ali had a record player that played 45 rpm records built into his automobile. In the 60s, Norelco "Auto Mignon" only held one 45 rpm record at a time, for 4½ minutes of play, potentially distracting the driver with the need for multiple record changes.
Norelco players were able to keep the needle on the record while driving. The needle performance was unaffected by rough roads, car sway, and sharp braking. However, there was nowhere to put the vinyl since the Norelco didn't store any records, as the RCA model did.
Car record players soon made way for the eight-track tape deck. In September 1965, the Ford Motor Company introduced factory-installed and dealer-installed eight-track tape players as an option on three of its 1966 models (the sporty Mustang, luxurious Thunderbird, and high-end Lincoln), and RCA Victor introduced 175 Stereo-8 Cartridges from its RCA Victor and RCA Camden labels of recording artists catalogs.

New installment of my PJO Trade AU in the works:
So, apparently demigods didn’t get sick very often.
But when they did?
Hoooo boy did they pull out all the stops.
Thalia readjusted the thick cloth tied around her face and tucked into her shirt collar, before hefting up her latest pair of buckets filled with ice water. Almost made her wistful for the invisible spirit servants on Ogygia, honestly.
As best they’d been able to figure, it started in the Hermes cabin. Three separate new arrivals had come in the week before and been shuffled into the catch-all cabin, though only one stayed there as an unclaimed demigod, the other two heading off to Apollo and Demeter’s cabins, respectively. But regardless, at least one of them came in with some kind of nasty bug without showing any symptoms, and the Hermes kids were the first to get taken out.
Luke wasn’t the senior half blood by any means, but when the Head of the cabin went down puking her guts out, he took charge pretty quick. As soon as he realized more kids than not were dealing with the dizzy spells that preceded the sniffling and then vomit, Thalia’s best friend closed up shop, turning the whole cabin into a quarantine zone. Unfortunately, that practically guaranteed any camper inside who hadn’t caught the bug yet was screwed, but they all obeyed Luke’s orders, reluctantly agreeing to it for the greater good.
Then a daughter of Dionysus collapsed in the dining pavilion, and everything went downhill from there.
Twelve cabins housed all of Camp Half Blood’s demigod population. Three stood empty most if not all of the time (Artemis, Zeus, and Hera); that left nine full of teenagers ripe for infection. Five filled up with feverish groans fairly quickly. The Athena kids tried to close up shop before any of their members could get sick, but missed the mark, and within two days more than half of them were bedridden, including Annabeth. Thalia didn’t dare set foot inside, but she’d at least spoken to the younger girl a little through a closed window, and promised something special once Annabeth felt better.
“But if you die, I get to keep it,” she warned, only to laugh when the eleven year old petulantly stuck out her tongue.
The Apollo campers, gods love ‘em, emptied out the Big House infirmary and went mobile. Those who fell ill were banished back to their cabin, but the rest maintained the closest they could get to hospital protective gear and delivered soup, drinks, and other necessities to everyone else. Kids caught in the spiked fever phase were wiped down repeatedly with cold wet washcloths, while those wracked by dry heaving got the same pressed firmly against the backs of their necks.
But that meant a lot of cold wet cloth constantly warming up and drying out, which meant a fresh supply of ice water was badly needed.
Hence Thalia, decked out like a background extra in a post apocalypse film, lugging heavy buckets up to the cabins again and again and again. She wasn’t the only one by any means; the magical beings employed by Chiron as security and cleaning crew and whatnot were all pitching in too, since they couldn’t get sick like demigods. But that meant Thalia needed to dodge around other folks and their buckets on her back-and-forth trips, which felt progressively trickier as the fourth day of Camp versus Plague dragged on and warmed up.
At some point in the early afternoon, as she set down her empty buckets for another refill, an Apollo kid decked out in yellow vinyl gloves and an actual medical facemask came scurrying up to try and shove two wrapped sandwiches into her hands. “I just need one, thanks,” Thalia told him. Her stomach twisted; maybe make that only half of one.
But the kid shook their head. “The other’s for Percy.”
“Yeah, no, that’s gotta wait, I don’t set foot in our cabin until the end of the day, after I’ve scrubbed my skin down to the cellular level.” Like Tartarus was Thalia tracking germs home to infect her little cousin.
Above the line of their mask, the Apollo kid’s eyes scrunched. “But he’s not at the Poseidon cabin?”
“...what.”
“I saw him helping with laundry, just a little while ago. Looked like he was past ready for a break, too. Like you,” the kid added pointedly, before they successfully maneuvered the sandwiches into Thalia’s unresistant grasp. She only blinked as the twerp took off again, before tipping her head back with a groan.
Percy, helping out with laundry. When Thalia specifically ordered him to stay put in their cabin, away from fevers and vomit and all the camp-wide nastiness. For a moment she idly wondered if losing Poseidon’s favor would be worth strangling the self-sacrificing idiot.
...nah. Probably not.
Sighing, Thalia abandoned her buckets and went to find Percy.
If only so she could throw him headfirst into the lake.

"Hi, Harlan."
Rabbit peeked up from his lunch and offered a flash of a smile. He'd been up all morning installing a fence for his neighbor's goats. Six hours later, he was finally done and taking a well-deserved break at the local diner. The plate in front of him was stacked high with French toast and bacon; a cup of black coffee sitting at the side. He was dirty and sweaty and smelled like barnyard critters, but it seemed that wasn't enough to ward off his visitor. "How's it going?" He asked through a mouthful of food, "The fence break already?"
It was neighbor's daughter. She was a pretty thing, maybe in her early twenties. Rabbit wasn't interested in her, but he could take a step back to understand why someone would be. With her brown skin and long curls, she gave off a sort of warm kindness that was hard to miss.
"Nope, but you forgot your money." She said and slid into the other side of the booth. Placing an envelope on the table, she watched Rabbit lick the syrup from his fingers before picking it up. She smiled. "You know, if you stuck around, I would've fed you. I can make bacon and French toast as good as anyone else."
Rabbit hummed, shoving the envelope in the front of his overalls. "I'm sure you can, Danny. I like it here-- And I'm sure you're tired of seeing my face." He said and shoveled another forkful of food in his mouth, returning her smile. "I feel like I'm at your house once a week to fix things. At least. Anytime my phone rings, I know it's your father."
Not a chance. Watching Harlan work around their farm was the best thing to happen to her in years. The man was a literal giant and built like a fridge. -- Not to mention he was stupid handsome. Danielle waved him off and propped her elbows on the table, her smile spreading. "Have I ever thanked you for that?" She asked, her brown eyes soft. "You're good to him and I... really appreciate it. He's still a homebody, but now that you're around, he at least has someone he talks to."
Rabbit shrugged and sipped his coffee. "He's good to me too. You both are."
Danielle pressed her lips together and hesitated. In the four years he'd been around, she'd never seen him with a lady. And, if she was being honest, she was starting to hope maybe he was waiting for her to approach him. Harlan was so sweet to her and her father; it only seemed right to try and get closer to him. "Maybe... I can cook for you, huh?" She offered, "What about dinner? This Sunday?"
Rabbit started to nod and set his mug down, his brows knitting. "I was gonna come over this weekend anyway. Your dad asked me to help fix the deck and gotta do some measurements-"
"No! I mean- Yes, but I was thinking..." Face warming, she tucked a dark curl behind her ear and smiled. "Like you and I? A date."
Rabbit's eyes widened. For a moment, he just stared at her. "Oh... Danny." He stuttered a little and reddened, his ears pink under the cap on his head. "Fuck. Uh-... N-No." He managed and frowned, "Sorry. I-I can't."
The smile on the young woman's face dropped for a second, but she did her best to put it back on to hide her disappointment. "I knew it. You already have someone, right?" She asked, "Sorry, Harlan."
Chewing the inside of his cheek, Rabbit leaned back in his seat and sighed. "Sort of." He said, "I'm uh... I'm widowed. I-I don't-"
"Oh! Oh, Harlan! Why didn't you say so? I'm so sorry!"
Rabbit lifted his hands and waved them, his face deep red. "Don't worry about it. I'm just... not ready to move on." He told her and offered a bittersweet smile.
Danielle still frowned, but nodded in understanding. "You should come for dinner anyway. With dad too." She said, "I feel so awful. How... How long?"
Glancing away, he picked a little at a piece of chipped vinyl on the table. "...Almost five years. Moved up here right after."
Danny let out a breath and leaned back, "Damn. And here I thought I'd get some free labor out of you." She said, trying to lighten the mood. "If I tied you down, we wouldn't have to pay you anymore."
Rabbit's eyes darted back to her before an amused grin pulled across his cheeks. "Don't feel too bad. It wouldn't have worked out anyway." He said, watching cock a brow. "Too old for you."
