Spicy Octopus With Garlic And Pan Roasted Potatoes
Spicy Octopus With Garlic And Pan Roasted Potatoes Deliciousness on a plate! This recipe is inspired by one of my favorite appetizers served at Vintner Grill. Much like calamari, shrimp, and lobster, if octopus is overcooked the texture turns to rubber. And that texture is awful. Once the baby potatoes are boiled, this recipe comes together in about 20 minutes, and most of that time is taken…

#FFXIVwrite2023 - Prompt #3
Decided to use my adventurer's tarot since it was a 'free day' Decided to start with the past card today, and will write the present and future later. Past - The Ooze (Reverse) - If you are too empathetic and nurturing you will become overwhelmed. Do not shoulder everyone else’s problems. Take care of yourself first.
I’m over this. I’m over this. I’m over this. I’m done. I’m not dealing with it. Absolutely not. First pulled here against My will. Having to absorb light just to save others. It doesn’t make me feel good. No Y’shtola to talk to. Urianger is hiding something again. And all in all of course the fucking Ascians show up. Fuck me. Fuck this. Fuck all of this. I just want to go home, ignore the blasted echo and age peacefully until I die. I’m the daughter of merchants. Not some hero. Not a savior. Just me. Just Kerina.
Kerina stomped past the Manager and threw open the door to their suite, swiftly closing and locking the door behind them. Smells assaulted their nostrils and they turned and looked, their table fully stocked with food. Narrowing their eyes, they looked around on the door for any signs of forced entry before they heard a familiar voice speak up from behind them.
“From the Exarch, I think. With that mirror of his, he can watch your every move, you know. He’ll be glad to know you’re at least staying healthy. With me here, he’ll probably think you’re talking to yourself, however,” Ardbert stated, watching Kerina turn around, pointing to a note on the table “Still, he’s keeping you well-fed.”
Oh. Oh hells no. There was no way they were going to let that absolute wannabe hero with no social skills, and a knack for wanting to steal their triumphs & hard work to be seen as a hero themselves watch their every move.
Kerina turned on their heels, fury dripping off them as they made their way back over to the door as Ardbert called out to them “Wait, wait, at least take a rest first, it would be a shame if the food went to waste. I could tell you all about Voeburtite cuisine, if you’d like.”
Stopping in their tracks, their shoulders slumped down, as they physically reminded themselves to unclench their jaw and hands, before facing the table and Ardbert with a look of exhaustion and sighed. “You’re right. I hate it, but you’re right.”
Sitting down and pouring themselves tea, Kerina grabbed what looked like an orange from the basket, beginning to peel it revealed light pink flesh inside. It tasted like an orange but mixed with a grapefruit. Facing him, they sat there eating with a half smile “I’d offer you some but I know it’d be rather useless. I feel like I’m being a bad host.”
“Ah, I know you’d be a good one, after all, you’ve been rather accommodating to me once I figured out there was at least one person on the First that could hear me. Better than that one time we were all invited out to a godsforsaken feast. Sent all over, forced to collect rare ingredients for our own feast. If that sounds ridiculous, it’s because it was.” He said, standing between seats at the table.
Kerina laughed, swallowing the piece of fruit they had in their mouth before pointing the fork at him and nodding, a wide grin on their face “Oh, gods, I’ve done that too. Some banquet of heroes where I had to go fight this giant swamp beast called a Goobbue just to get some moss off its back to bring the seeds to a vintner to make a rare wine. Let me tell you I passed up on that wine at the banquet. I’d rather stick to the meads and ciders. I at least know what that’s made of.”
Ardbert laughed as well “I see we’re not so different after all. What else did you and your friends have to fetch?”
“These Goblins in our world, I suppose the most similar race here would be the Mords? But not quite. They make this super stinky cheese but it’s actually quite delicious when paired with savory things like roasted vegetables or grilled meat. However, they set up camp in the absolute worst place and their production of cheese and other goods just had them beset by all sorts of animals, including dragons. So as you’d imagine I had to clear out their camp and protect them from the threats before we could even get the cheese.” Kerina smiled, picking at the fruit, ignoring the sandwiches. They figured the fruit to be safe but after the bloody banquet, they would not be touching any food offered to them that they didn’t see prepared themselves.
“Really? All that for cheese. I remember having to deal with the Pixies for what felt like hours trying to solve a riddles when Nyelbert just rolls up, answers five of them like it’s not anything but a mere child’s game and wanders off with the gin bottles I was tasked with collecting. Had I been tasked with helping Branden lug the kegs from Wright, it would have gone easier.” His face a melancholy mix as he laughed, clearly remembering the good times before.
They talked until Kerina could hold their eyes open no longer and before Ardbert left, they leveled with him “Listen, I enjoy our talks, but can we make it a thing where instead of me wondering if you’re looking in on me, like I know there’s no ‘night time’ here per say, but between 10 bells in the evening and 6 bells in the morning, just give me privacy, unless otherwise asked?”
“I’d see no problem with that. I’d talk with the exarch however, I mean judging by his people’s faith in him he seems to be a decent sort, the mirror-watching not withstanding.” Ardbert offered.
“Oh trust me, I will be marching down to his little room first thing in the morning to give him a piece of my mind about that,” Kerina shuddered “Boy needs to learn his boundaries before I smack the hair off his ears.”
“It’s Emet-Selch we should be concerned about, though. Him and the Ascian in white have both come to our world now to talk to us. The one in white told us the only way to save our world was to bring about the rejoining. Desperate, we heeded their words, not knowing the flood was of their own making. They cannot be trusted. None of them. But he did have one thing right: one should not fight blindly.” Lamenting, he noticed Kerina’s eyes go wide.
“Ah, so you’ve met Elidibus as well. The one robed in white. Odd duck that one. Can’t decide if he just wants to fight me or kill me. Never met Emet-Selch before, though. Just be glad you didn’t have to deal with the crazy one.” Kerina replied, looking around the room for a bin to put the peels in of the fruit. “Lahabrea was a piece of work, let me tell you. Absolutely unhinged. Didn’t seem to care he was destroying his own plans just so he could set off something he called the Ultima weapon. Nearly succeeded in destroying me. Was left with a nasty ringing in my ears afterwards.”
“Sorry to hear that, I know how injuries that never truly heal can feel. We’ll speak on the morrow, yeah? I’ll keep to those rules as long as I can feel like I’m not alone anymore.” Looking hopeful, Ardbert smiled at Kerina as they nodded before disappearing.
About to shrug off their clothes and sleep, thinking back to his statement about the Exarch, Kerina sighed and only took off that which would make sleeping uncomfortable, like the belts and jewelry, deciding to sleep fully clothed that ‘night’ after they closed the thick curtains which blocked out most of the ever-cursed light.

According to these Gannon’s Maui patrons
“Happy Hour is great!! Food is delicious, had Brussel Sprouts, crab dip and Wagyu burger. Outside atmosphere and view is unbeatable.” Brad H., February 2023 “Gannon’s was recommended to us. And I’d say it was the best dining experience on our trip, hands down. Fantastic food, great drinks, attentive and friendly staff. And of course the beautiful setting. Definitely coming back.” Chris G., February 2023 “We had a large group that took some time to coordinate and Gannons was not only accommodating but flexible with us as the group increased in size. Everyone was kind and helpful from the first phone call to our last sip of wine as we departed, and you toss in great tasting food, generous portion sizes, a beautiful sunset and a place that welcomed kids, and you have achieved five stars! Thanks especially to Sidney and Cara for all of your help!” Bree L., February 2023 “Excellent sunset dinner with beautiful views of the ocean. This restaurant is located within Wailea Golf Club, which is a beautiful property overall. Friendly and attentive service from our server Cody throughout the evening along with the delicious food made for a nice memorable evening. Food quality and taste were good, as expected for a restaurant of this caliber – bbq pork ribs with slaw & pineapple salsa, Korean marinated strip loin with fried rice and cucumber pineapple salad, classic iceberg wedge salad. Nice Asian flavors fused into the steak and ribs. We enjoyed the dinner! Their famous coconut roulade dessert was ok- nice crumb on the cake and cream filling was good, but toasted coconut didn’t come through only plain coconut flavor. Great cocktail menu, very creative selections. Cocktails were excellent, strong, especially Mr.Tuttle and Strawberry Fizz.” Chris D., January 2023 “Gannons is an absolutely beautiful restaurant with incredible views! Perfect place to watch the sunset while you sip on Mai Tais and dine on Ahi Poke. Happy Hour options are awesome and a great price!” Amelia S., January 2023 “The concierge at our villas recommended Gannon’s for a family member’s special birthday dinner. We had delicious appetizers, main dishes, and special drinks to celebrate and enjoyed a fabulous sunset, too. Highly recommend Gannon’s.” Julie C., June 2021 Open daily, Gannon’s Restaurant is the perfect spot in Wailea for those looking for something unique and off-the-beaten-tourist-path. @luck-and-larceny
Why was he nervous? There was nothing to be nervous about. There was no sort of expectation of him. No one was asking anything, least of which not the person this was all for. It was a surprise, which meant that it was the peak of obligation-free interaction. On top of that, she had never expected anything of him. She simply took him as he was. When he had pretended to have forgotten her nameday earlier in the week, she playfully pouted, but forgave him quickly when he offered grilled cheese and cheap wine in bed, followed by the promise of a sumptuous breakfast the next day.
Of course, she still teased him over breakfast about forgetting a nameday that she herself had had to invent. It was worth it, he thought.
Things usually were. With her, anyway.
So, the whole point of that, was this. So why was he nervous? Despite his usual protestations otherwise, Evander was an entirely decent cook. It was something he could lose himself in, where the end result would not only engage all the senses, but would often help forge a connection. Food was made to be eaten, obviously, but more than anything—to him, anyway—it was made to be shared and enjoyed.
She always enjoyed his cooking, what little of it he had felt brave enough to do for her, so he wasn’t worried about that. And even if she didn’t enjoy it, she’d find the most delicate, yet humorous way to needle him about it and would appreciate the effort anyway. The fact that this was something a bit more elaborate than grilled cheese and cheap wine wouldn’t change that.
Then wine. That certainly was not a concern. He knew that she appreciated wine for what it was, rather than whatever promises some sommelier or vintner claimed it to be. Tonight’s selection wasn’t anything fancy, but it was something she had remarked on several times. Plus, while the wine itself wasn’t anything expensive, they’d be drinking it out of two fine crystal glasses that they had stolen from some sneering waiter at a restaurant in the Goblet a couple Moons ago. If there was ever a gesture that spoke to the two of them, it was cheap wine drunk messily from stolen crystal worth more than their rent.
Maybe it was the chocolate fountain? It was a bit much, admittedly. When given a choice in chocolate fondue, he had initially blanked. He wasn’t expecting so many options. Something fancy and dark? Something simple, to let the dippable fruits, sweet and pastries do the heavy lifting? Perhaps something with an exotic infusion of flavors? In the end, he settled for a chocolate-and-rolanberry sauce, which seemed excessive, considering one of the things they had to dip into it was, well... rolanberries. Chocolate-and-rolanberry drizzled rolanberries? Maybe it was a bit much.
On the other hand, she almost never said no to more of anything, certainly not rolanberries and chocolate.
So, what was it then?
Oh.
Yeah, okay. So maybe the moogle did throw things off a little. It was obnoxious. It was loud. It demanded attention. With it in the room, even off to the corner, you couldn’t help but focus on it. He was certain that if he turned the lights in his room off, if he blew out the candles, that this obnoxious moogle, which found a way to feel like it was taking up all the space in the room despite not being nearly as big as it looked, would fill up every single corner, nook and cranny with its song and light.
On the other hand, all things considered, didn’t that make the moogle the perfect nameday gift for Malika?
This was a surprise. The very peak of “no obligation.” She had never expected anything of him. She had always just let him be.
Maybe there was nothing to be nervous about. Maybe that was something to be nervous about? If it was, he’d worry over it later. For now, all he had to do was wait.

THE TIG ARCHIVES│FOOD│SUMMER WINES
“What grows together goes together. Words to live by from Master Sommelier, Laura Maniec, who would pair her basil flecked pizza with a nice Barolo, Frappato, or other glass of Italian red hued goodness. She is one of just 20 female Master Sommeliers in the world (which is so badass it’s crazy). She owns and operates Corkbuzz in Manhattan and Charlotte, North Carolina, where both wine novices and pros can gain vintner knowledge as well as imbibe under one roof. In Vino Veritas at its finest. The Wall Street Journal called Laura “The It Girl” of the NY wine scene, Food & Wine Mag sings her praises as one of the top sommeliers of 2013, and Crains NY and Wine Enthusiast keep her in the company of one of their lauded Top 40 under 40. I mean….it is for very good reason that I am equal parts in awe of and obsessed with this chick. At just 25 years old, she was named both partner and wine and spirits director for BR Guest Restaurant Group, where she waxed poetic on tasting notes for 20+ restaurants. I say again, she was just 25.If she were a wine, Maniec says she would be a “Clouet Cuvée 1911 from the town of Bouzy in Champagne: fun yet serious, bubbly, unique and warm (as in welcoming, although Bouzy does also happen to be one of the warmest villages in Champagne).” But don’t let the vintage or the fancy pants quality of that bubbly bottle fool you. She is young and as down to earth as they come – relishing camping trips with friends, and her cheese smothered in (oh no she didn’t!) butter. Makes me adore her even more. Laura shares with The TIG her choices for what you will enjoy pouring this summer. I, for one, can’t wait to indulge. Cheers!”
- Meghan Markle, August 2014
1. Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine
Loire, France – 2012
Tastes like lemon, lime, refreshing and slightly briny finish. It pairs perfectly with oysters or drink on the beach during the day. ($12.99)
2. Wimmer Czerny Gruner Veltliner Fumberg
Wagram, Austria – 2012
This is one of my favorite medium bodied wines for summer that pairs perfectly with the bounty of produce available from tomatoes, to asparagus, to corn. It has flavors of orange zest, tangerines and white pepper and is one of the best pairings with vegetables. ($13.99)
3. Clos Cibonne Tibouren Rose
Cotes de Provence, France – 2012
Made from the local Tibouren grape, it is pale in color with hints of orange and chocolate. During the summer it is a little more serious than the average bottle of rose. It goes well with grilled burgers or chicken or with fish tacos. ($22.99)
4. Ameztoi Stimatum Txakolina Tinto
Getaría, Spain – 2013
Made from the Hondarribi Beltza grape in Pais Basco region of Spain, this slightly fizzy red wine is one of the few low alcohol reds that is perfect for sipping on during the day. It has fruity notes but finishes completely dry and almost looks like a dark rose in color. ($22.99)

A victim of the Coronavirus, Seattle's Toronado closes their doors forever.
image sourced from Toronado Seattle’s Facebook page
Unless you’re Jared Leto, you are probably familiar with the newest pandemic known as the Coronavirus or COVID-19. No doubt you or someone familiar has been impacted by this virus, either through transmission or through forced quarantine to minimize the spread. Unfortunately, the side effects range from death to unemployment, depending on which state you live in. Owing to the latest proclamation by Washington state governor, Jay Inslee, the Toronado is the latest victim of this virus by announcing the conclusion of business as of March 17th, 2020.
Started in 2014, the Toronado arrived in Seattle with the goal of being an alternative beer destination in Seattle’s north end. Located in the Ravenna neighborhood, the bar and restaurant featured world-class beers, wine, ciders, and a qualified selection of spirits. Owing inspiration to its sister locations in San Diego (now deceased) and San Francisco (aka, the OG), co-owner Matt Bonney sought a food menu featuring a carnivore’s orgy of bacon, dry-aged steaks, cheesesteak sandwiches, and yes even a cookie.
During its tenure from August 2014 to March of this year, the Toronado has hosted countless brewery-sponsored events, including the few locations where they could take part in a meat raffle. For co-owner Matt Bonney, the Toronado was an opportunity for him to return to his previous life as a bartender owing much of his reputation at
Whether in a serious discussion with one of his many regulars, or introducing himself to a first time couple or guest, Matt Bonney made a point of welcoming everyone. Some would say the Toronado in Seattle was the antithesis of its sister location in San Francisco. While others would argue the Toronado was the reflection of Matt Bonney. Unfortunately, in 2019, in the middle of the night, Matt Bonney’s life was cut short.
As of this morning, March 17th, the winged phoenix which adorns the Western window of the Toronado will remain unlit. Gone will be the dim lights, the smell of cooked meat on the grill, and the cacophony of heavy metal that was the soundtrack of the Toronado. Nearly six years young, the Toronado becomes the latest victim and no doubt there will be others.
In the own words, the Toronado said this about their closure.
To Our Valued Patrons and Purveyors,
Like many forms of human expression, a business represents the embodiment of an individual's (or collective) dream shared with a community. A business provides a service, provides an experience, and above all provides memories. As an expression of one or more people, it easy for customers to feel an intimacy not just with the business but those who navigate it along currents of time. It is for this reason that we not only recognize a business’s birth, continued progress but also its regrettable demise.
Today, during a time when community is important, the Toronado, is shutting down. With an uncertain future do to the COVID-19 out brake. As cliche as this will sound, this decision was not an easy one for us to make. As of this post, we have locked our doors forever.
Some of you will feel disappointed by this decision. While it will be a shock to many more. But what we do not want is any of you to feel ashamed or that you let the Toronado or the Bonney’s dream of owning a business down.
To those who visited us during these nearly six years, Lynn and I thank every one of you. You supported Matt and Lynn during the slow parts of each year and the most vigorous ones as well. Whether it was a pint, a plate of bacon, or just for a short conversation, we appreciated you taking the time to stop in and support us.
A special thanks also goes out to those who supplied us with fresh-baked bread, high quality produce and meat. In addition, we want to thank the countless breweries, brewers, distilleries, distillers, wineries, vintners, cideries, and cider makers for sharing their dreams of inspiring guests with every sip.
We would like to also thank each and every industry employee who supported the Tornonado by hosting brewery nights, brewery dinners, or by inviting us to collaborate on something unique. Whether we see you on the street or during the next collaboration at a distant address, know that you are family and will be in our thoughts, hearts and memories.
We are always a positive family and conclusion of Toronado and Matt's dream does not stop with the turn of a key. In the coming months and years, Lynn and I have been collaborating with breweries which Matt Bonney was fond of, creating a series of beers called "The Book of Bonney". Starting with Urban Family, we invite you to lookout for Chapter 1 in this ongoing series of collaborations.
Until then, I ask that you continue Matt, Lynn, and Phil’s dream of supporting the community by visiting your nearest small business and keep us in your thoughts.
From your loving and caring staff,
Toronado Seattle
