In a time of utter helplessness, confusion and despair, Natasha, of all my nurses at Emory Memorial Hospital Midtown, treated me with the greatest kindness and respect. Knowing nothing about me, she made no assumptions. Wanting nothing but my recovery, she shared her smile, her disciplined attention, her caring heart and creativity every time she entered my room. With little authority to wield in a complex and broken treatment system, she always offered me her intelligence and her laughter and she kept her word every time she gave it.

Acts of kindness may be the most fugitive of human gifts, but they are, indeed, the most valuable actions we take for others, especially in times of great stress and distress.

Natasha showed me so much about how to be a loving, competent, disciplined professional and a human being at the same time. No words could ever thank her enough, nor can any image do better. But I will carry her beauty with me to my grave. And the same goes for Trinh and Nelly and Kaylla and Magnelly along with Jarvis and Chaplain Joseph Smith.

Without the commitment of my dear friend, Tommy, and the generosity of my other old friend, Hugh, I would have lost both my mind and my will to recover during the 19 dark days I spent in acute care after I fell and broke my leg the day I arrived in Atlanta. I owe them all a lot now and I intend to pay them back by practicing what they taught me as I help others who cross my path in the months and years to come. I can’t think of a better way to spend the last years of my life.

Whoops! We can relate... it's so slippery out in Montreal! 'Fall of Montmorenci in Winter' was drawn by George Herriot and engraved on copper by F. C. Lewis. It was included in Heriot's "Travels through the Canadas, containing a Description of the Picturesque Scenery on some of the Rivers, and Lakes with and Account of the Production, Commerce, and Inhabitants of those Provinces." It was published by Richard Philips of 6 New Bridge Street, London, in 1807. Looks like a lovely caleche ride gone wrong for one unlucky rider.
