It’s a gal’s name. It’s a state. And… it’s a diner! This pair hails not from the heart of the South but the heart of New York City - Queens to be exact, in the year 1978 when Georgia Diner first opened. ☕️ A mainstay in the Queens community for over 40 years, it’s exciting to know that this city restaurant is still going strong, still serving classic Greek and American diner fare, and still pouring endless cups of coffee. ☕️ Read more about them in the shop. A photo of the diner follows the cups. . . . . . #vintagerestaurantware #diner #queensny #georgiadiner #restaurantware #coffeelovers #cupofjoe #1970s #georgia https://www.instagram.com/p/CqRVhSCueh9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Peacocks and peonies and a possible hotel storyline! That’s the excitement of these five vintage restaurant ware dinner plates. Made in the 1930s by Mayer China possibly for a fancy midwestern hotel located in Kansas, this rare set features a colorful pattern of florals, birds and decorative designs. We found record of this pattern in the hotel’s inventory list in the 1950s just two decades after they remodeled some public and private spaces to include a Mandarin Room and a Persian Room. That must have been such an exotic change of scenery for a state affected by drought and dust bowls and the Great Depression. I bet a far-away aesthetic and a hotel dinner served here on these pretty plates was just the thing needed to restore a creative spirit or two. Read more about them (and see a photo of the hotel) in the shop! . . . . . #vintagerestaurantware #dinnerplates #1930s #hotelware #dinnerware #restaurantware #kansas #midwest #persian #peacocks https://www.instagram.com/p/CqEGSvduB28/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sometimes all you need in order to add a little instant Holiday spirit is a cup of Christmas cheer! Calling out for endless amounts of spiced cider, hot chocolate, wassail or mulled wine, this pair of pretty vintage restaurant ware cups set just the right, festive mood for holiday fun. With their red stripes and scallops, swags and flowers, they add instant style and cozy warmth to the season, along with a bit of history. Manufactured by one of the hotel industry's leading dishware makers, this pair of Sterling China cups were made in the 1980s in East Liverpool, Ohio. The pottery company had been in business since 1917, and through the next several decades steadily built up a reputation for craftsmanship and design that appealed particularly to restaurants and hotels all around the country. By the time the 1950s rolled around, Sterling was at the top of its game, expanding the pottery into newly acquired plants, including one in Puerto Rico. Especially known for their glazing techniques and lasting design durability, the pottery continued to grow and thrive throughout the 20th century. But, unfortunately, by the early 2000s, Sterling China Company closed, just shy of their 100th birthday, as they were unable to compete with foreign markets. Heavy and durable, weighing in at just over half a pound each, these two matching cups feature ear-shaped handles, an embossed scalloped edge just under the rim, and a rare hard-to-find cranberry transferware design with a handpainted stripe. Both cups were made by Sterling, but each bears a different style of the company's logo and each was made in a different year (one in 1981, the other in 1984). A lovely choice for setting the holiday mood they fit a variety of occasions whether you are warming up after a day of play in the snow, waking up to a fresh pot of french press coffee or winding down with a cup of Christmas tea, this festive duo adds non-cliche holiday charm and appeal all season long. Find them in the shop! . . . . . #christmascheer #vintagerestaurantware #restaurantware #holidaycups #spicedcider #merryandbright #redandwhite #minimalchristmas #atouchofchristmas #holidaydrinks https://www.instagram.com/p/CIdsJx7gSFX/?igshid=3mwozgx35d6m

The vintage restaurant ware article has been posted on Artisans List! You can find it one of two ways... by visiting their Instagram account @artisanslist or by visiting their site directly at artisanslist.com 🍴Either way, you’ll see the vintage suitcase photo from last week and that will lead your way. It’s so fun to travel not only the country but also time via an unsuspecting dish. In the article, I highlighted several examples of specific vintage and antique restaurant ware/hotelware pieces and traced their origin stories. Not all of them were easy discoveries but they were most fun to research. Only two of the items photographed here in this pink and red restaurant ware collection are featured in the article but all are available in the shop , plus several more pieces that didn’t get a mention or a photo op (poor things!). I wish I could have included them all since they each have quite unique personalities! Thank you so much to everyone who expressed interest in this article. It has been a joy to chat about history AND dishes with fellow fans:) Hope you enjoy the article! . . . . . . #restaurantware #hotelware #dishcollector #vintagerestaurantware #collecting #pinkandred #shelfie #pinkkitchen #writinginspiration #freelancewriter https://www.instagram.com/p/CC3zHwVJVnQ/?igshid=10ajqu55pty6e

If ever there was a more inspiring platter from the past it would be this one! I’m so excited to introduce you to a true gem from history... This vintage piece of restaurantware was made during the 1920s/1930s for the Union League Club, a philanthropic organization first formed in New York City In 1862. The initial members of the Union League were just a handful of prominent and successful businessmen who were upset by the pro-slavery sentiments that were dividing the country during the Civil War. They believed the United States was a country where everyone should have the right to prosper and to enjoy peace and fellowship. They called themselves the Union League because they supported the Union Army's fight to end slavery and Abraham Lincoln's mission to create a just and equal union for all. Using their own pool of resources and fundraising skills, the Union League Club focused on projects that defined a better country for everyone. Their initial endeavors included funding the first African American regiment of the Union Army during the Civil War, offering executive support in the founding of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, raising funds for the erection and permanent display of the Statue of Liberty and establishing the U.S. Sanitary Commission (the precursor to the American Red Cross). Made by Lamberton Works, one of the most distinguished makers of restaurantware and hotelware in the country and distributed by Albert Pick and Company (another marvel of a business story!) means that this rare platter represents not only the finest quality in restaurant dishware but also represents a club that was keen on bringing out the finest attributes in American citizens. Such a well-intentioned piece of history! Read so much more about the history of this piece in the shop listing. - #unionleagueclub #restaurantware #hotelware #philanthropic #historicclubsofamerica #forthebetter #nychistory #chicagohistory #vintagerestaurantware #vintagemonorgram https://www.instagram.com/p/B63YreQAa73/?igshid=jslfuoa3hc6v

In the 1920s, this is how you ate dinner aboard the New York Central Rail Lines. As your train raced towards glamorous cities like Chicago, Boston or New York, you enjoyed a leisurely dinner served on custom NYCL restaurantware that was praised for its elegant, understated design. Named after New York governor DeWitt Clinton, this plate pattern features New York State’s first steam locomotive which was built in 1831. It’s a true railroad artifact, combining over 200 years of history and all the romance of the Roaring 20’s.
