Threads, Spring 2022
This cover of this issue offers a brilliant fuchsia wrap top (Vogue 1246) in silk organza which accompanies an article by Sandra Betzina on sewing organza and how to best take advantage of its thin stiffness. Other articles continue the theme of dressy clothing. The back cover shows off a pale pink dress from the 1930s with a large, bertha collar made out of lattice work created from the same fabric. Judith Neukam explains how to make this vintage feature from creating the tubes of fabric, laying them out into lattice and then attaching a scalloped edging. At a time when women’s wardrobes were much smaller, every dress had to offer details and features that might it right for the occasion. I imagine this dress at a tea party or worn with a hat at a garden party. For a more modern look, Anna Mazur explains how to alter a basic sleeveless sheath dress into a one-shouldered look. And Laura Nash shows how to take a gored a skirt pattern and redraft it with scallops.
All of these are for more formal occasions and wear, while other articles deal with more basic issues like fit, including one on fitting a man’s shirt, pressing, sewing details on thick denims, and more. And we have the usual columns with sewing tips and new products. There are reviews of the new patterns and a section on spring colors and patterns as well. As I am looking out at a snow-covered yard, the idea of spring is very appealing.
You can find it at your local fabric store, bookstore, newsstand, or online here: https://www.threadsmagazine.com/

whew i just figured out how to ask a question. hi! could you do a post on da looks for suuuper cold weather? i live in canada and a bubble jacket won't even keep me warm.
Darling, I live in Michigan with lake effect snow. I understand your pain.
Outerwear
Step one: Throw away your bubble coat. Not even because I personally find them tacky and an affront to fashion, but because (as you mentioned) they do not keep you warm. My winter coat looks like this, I got it at a thrift store which is where I always suggest going for clothes if you’re strapped for cash or want unique pieces. You can easily fix them up with new buttons like I did to make them fancier as well.
Step Two: Buy a coat. Puffer jackets are in, so classic coats are harder to find at in-person shops. Some keywords for finding coats online: trench coat, maxi coat, princess coat, vintage winter coat, double breasted, WOOL. If you’re going to invest in a good coat, make sure it’s wool. I won’t bog this post down with links, but here are two: x, x, links to Etsy shops that make handmade, vintage, wool winter coats for under $200. You can customize them, and though I’ve never bought from either shop, the reviews and images seem to point towards good quality.
Step Three: Boots. For days trekking through snow, just accept your fate and buy winter snow boots. But if you’re going to class or work somewhere with mostly pavement, you can stick with leather boots. Ankle or calf length to protect against snow getting inside, and lace up as always are what I suggest.
Step Four: Accessories. General Dark Academia accessories still apply in the winter, but cold temperatures give even more opportunities in the form of scarves and gloves. You can use long scarves to wrap around your neck and head, which is what I do to protect my hair while also avoiding hats. As for gloves, just go for vintage inspired, elegant ones.
Middlewear
That’s not a word, but you know what I mean. This is the fun season of Dark Academia: when everyone gets to break out their sweaters. Collared shirts underneath, turtlenecks, cable knits, button up cardigans. So cozy. Tuck whatever your preferred top into something high waisted. You can even still wear skirts and jeans so long as you layer properly. You also can incorporate summer tops into your winter by wearing them over turtlenecks.
Underwear
Layers, layers, layers. This is just general tips for keeping warm but seriously, layer up. You can still wear skirts, trousers, and jeans. You just should put leggings on underneath. Fleece lined leggings are cheap and easy to find! You can wear several layers of leggings and socks on underneath typical Dark Academia clothing. Even silk buttons downs; just wear an undershirt or two underneath.
Conclusion
Dark Academia fashion is still very possible in harsh temperatures! These were general tips, feel free to ask if you have questions about anything specific, and add on any suggestions.

Rustic weddings are genuinely stunning. Warm weather, diminished lights, candles... they all add to the lovely, heartfelt, and unique ambiance. So no big surprise that these sorts of weddings have been among the top choices over the most recent few years. They look exceptional whenever of the year, regardless of whether it's in warm summer or cool, yet enchanted winter. With regards to picking a wedding scene, there are a ton of alternatives - a barn, charming nursery wedding, an old homestead, or even woods.
With rustic weddings, details are significant as they give a unique touch to the entire environment. Materials have a significant impact on this. Flax, cotton, and ribbon make a bubbly and rustic feel. Lace specifically is ideal for flower girl dresses. A heartfelt, rustic, and extraordinary look is ensured. On the off chance that you need tones, don't stress; lace is similarly delightful in each shade. Can't help thinking about how? Look underneath.
Track down the ideal dress for your flower girl and cause her to feel exceptional! Read the article to explore the latest trends of 2021.
Elegant Dress
The elegant dress isn't typically a favored decision for little flower girls, however, this one could be an exemption. These flower girl dresses are ideal for rustic weddings. The ribbon looks stunning, heartfelt, and layers of lace with adorable details give out a more exceptional look, settling on it is an ideal decision for a mid-year rustic wedding.
Lavender Dress
Lavender toddler flower girl dresses are consistently a smart thought! Every single girl will be ecstatic to wear these dresses. Furthermore, on the off chance that you got them in this tone, you'll have a winning blend. Throughout the previous few years, the lavender tone has been an absolute necessity at weddings – regardless of whether as a beautification, bridesmaid dresses, or mother of the bride/groom dresses. The best part is that this shading works in all seasons – spring, summer, fall, and winter.
You can get an ideal lavender dress from Trish Scully today!
White Lace Dress
A dazzling white ribbon dress is ideal for a rustic wedding! You can get beautiful white lace toddler flower girl dresses from trusted online stores that highlight round neck areas and puff sleeves. This dress is not difficult to consolidate with different frills, all you need is a rich floral tiara and glossy silk bow around the midriff, and your flower girl is prepared to sparkle!
Vintage-Inspired
Vintage weddings are consistently a well-known theme decision, particularly among couples who need loose yet heartfelt energy on their big day. So for this sort of wedding, vintage-propelled flower girl dresses are an ideal decision.
How beautiful are these little flower girls? We are enamored with their wedding dresses for kids! The dresses should be bought from trusted vendors. To finish the look all you need is a flower girl crate or a wooden sign ''here comes the bride''.

Tulle Dress
A tulle dress looks sensational! The upper part is produced using wonderful ribbon in an extremely heartfelt and ageless style. The lower part is fit to be any little girl's desire; it's made of tulle. Fun-loving, heartfelt and lovely, don't you concur? This wedding dress for a kid girl is ideal for each season, you simply need to embellish it in a beautiful manner. In winter, with boots and leggings and in summer with shoes and flowers in their hair.
Wedding Dresses For Kids with Little Bit Of Lace
Allover lace isn't your thing? Or on the other hand, perhaps your flower girl discovers it excessively uncomfortable? At that point search for a dress that is fixed or made with silk or cotton, in that way your flower girl will feel great and look beautiful as well.
We love the lace detailing on wedding dresses for kids! They are unpretentious yet they give the dress ladylike and heartfelt touch. You can purchase this dress from Trish Scully. You should look for a dress that highlights ¾ sleeves, a long spotted skirt, and excellent silk bow around the abdomen to make sure she is not cold in fall and winter.
Ruffle Lace Dress
Ruffles are an ideal decision for little girls’ wedding dress. They have a happy, fun-loving, and heartfelt look. These dresses are carefully assembled, perfectly planned, and look exceptionally extraordinary and remarkable. They are truly simple to wear, particularly during the sweltering mid-year days. Dress them in shoes and a flower wreath for a totally rustic look.
Spring Vibe
Bring the Spring into your wedding setting with flower girls in fantasy blue dresses with wings! Indeed, you read that right, WINGS! Envision how glad your flower girl will be the point at which she sees this dress. She can whirl in it, dance, and play around envisioning she is a fantasy princess. A dress that highlights a smocked top with hand-beaded butterflies, a full skirt, and sparkle pixie wings would be ideal.
Blush Pink Dress
Pink is a most loved shade for most little girls. In view of that, we accept that they would cherish this girl’s wedding dress. It is made of ravishing ribbon, and it highlights a round neck area and a wonderful huge tulle bow on the back.
A confirmation of how ravishing and unique this dress look is a reality that you don't actually require a lot of assistants to go with it. Simply a basic floral crown and white shoes.
Lace And Tulle
Is it accurate to say that you are a gigantic fanatic of ribbon and tulle dresses? We get it! These toddler flower girl dresses look enchanting and heartfelt, yet they go with each subject of the wedding. A flawless full-length dress highlights a round neck area, shocking tulle skirt, and lace bodice with long sleeves.
Basic Dress
Effortlessness is quite valued with regards to rustic weddings. Love birds will oftentimes make their own designs, and even enrich the actual setting. They get flowers from family or companions and hold flower bundles all alone. Simple kid’s dresses for weddings consummately depict the entire rustic subject. They are basic, however delightful. They are extremely charming and bright, and girls will appreciate wearing them. Gather together the entire mix with cattle rustler boots to accomplish a lighthearted and rustic look. Simply awesome.

Heim for the Holidays: 1956 Evening Dress by Jacques Heim
This off-the-shoulder dress from the Vintage Pattern Lending Library, which is known as VintagePatternGirl on Etsy, was originally a Vogue Patterns, one of their Paris Originals. It is a reproduction of an original pattern, so it only comes in a 32-inch bust size. But if you are larger than that, and know something about enlarging patterns, the effort might be work your time. Heim is one of those underappreciated Paris designers active from the 1930s through the 1960s.
The silhouette follows the New Look by Christian Dior which became all the fashion in 1947: the tight bodice with soft shoulders, the full, long skirt and no fear of the hips--see the way the pleats are concentrated in the back skirt. As Vintage Pattern Girl cautions, “the pattern is for a truly couture dress and is recommended for an advanced sewer.” You will need to know how to make “a tiered horsehair petticoat” which created the great fullness of the skirt to the hemline. And how to make “a built in corset under-bodice to insure the perfect dress drape while holding the garment secure to the wearer.”
The suggested fabrics included several crispy silks: taffeta, satin, faille, shantung, moire. Also pique which is usually cotton, plus linen, and wool crepe. I think the crispy silks are your best bet. The shimmer as you move and as the skirt flows about you would be wonderful in a silk. Pair it with a matching or harmonizing silk wrap interlined with wool for warmth, and you can still wear this in winter.

OC intro
arielle “ari” renee katz
Arielle Katz was a mild-mannered child.
Never cried much; never made too much noise. The only daughter, learned how to stay away from the boys. Kept to herself a lot. Cherished all the attention she could get, when she could get it. Mother’s dress-up doll: tulle dresses and knitted tights paired with patent-leather Mary Janes; silk hair-bows at the ends of her intricate French braids. A day bed with a pink canopy. A vintage tea party set. Mom decides that all of her children need to have a talent; signs her up for Miss Tanya’s ballet classes at the Rec Center. Spends the next few years in and out of butterfly position, did so many plies she thought her legs would break. Met a best friend there, Nadya — the girl with a storybook full of tales from her homeland. Scraped knees covered by crayon-shaped bandaids. Holding her big brother’s hand as they walk on the metal beams that ran the distance of their walk back home to the big blue house, tucked tightly in the cul-de-sac next to the train tracks. Draws on the cement driveway with cheap box of sidewalk chalk, leaves a trail of powdered footprints all the way down the blue shag carpet. Listens to Mom at bedtime when she sings Arielle sweet lullabies, Ma Petite Lebellule, in her mother tongue. The young girl wanders what it means. “My little dragonfly”; It is the first time she’s thinking about how good it would feel to fly away.
Arielle Katz was a quiet young girl.
Bangs she cut by herself in front of the bathroom mirror with her mother's sewing scissors. Knee-high socks pulled all the way up. Gets made fun of for having too many freckles. Earns her pointe shoes, gets a bouquet of gardenias from her best friend after her first recital. Summer nights spent riding bikes down the tracks with Abraham. The abandoned train car soon became their treehouse. They brought camping chairs and a barbie-pink boombox to drown out the sounds of the outside world. The front pocket of her overalls was filled with candy stolen from the grocery store. Blows bright pink bubbles that her best friend pops with pink glittered fingers. Mom starts trying to speak French around the house again, tells Arielle that she needs to work on her pronunciation. Wonders if dad really means what he says on the phone; that he misses her and would come visit soon. Has an older brother always taking care of her, and two younger brothers to give her hell. Runs all the way home at top speed when August breaks his wrist trying to make the jump off the top of the rocket slide at Picken’s Park. Starts wearing thick, sticky lipgloss that traps the stray ends of her long brown hair. Sees some kids in her grade kissing under the bleachers, wonders when it’s gonna be her time. Passes a note to her best friend’s brother at lunch time telling him to meet her by the flagpole after school; tells him that she’s gonna kiss him, is that okay? He doesn’t know how to, but they do it any ways. She asks Dima if he felt anything and he tells her he doesn't know. The secret is, Arielle doesn’t either.
Arielle Katz was a confused teenager.
Wants to go by “Just Ari” now. Still gets good grades, but her teachers just wish she would participate more. The boys in PE class snap her bra from behind, so she gets in trouble for aiming a little “too low” in dodgeball. Doodles pictures in the margins of her notebooks with purple pen and leaves notes in her best friends’ lockers. Wears too-red lipstick and kisses her Nadya’s cheek every time she sees her, making sure to leave a mark. Steals lacy underwear from expensive stores at the mall. She doesn't wear them, though; just does it to say she has them. Too poor for the rich kids, yet too rich for the poor. Feels her face heat up after getting caught staring at some girl’s chest in the locker room. Gets bored when Nadya talks aimlessly about another one of her boyfriends, asks Ari if she’s ever kissed with tongue before. “It’s called Frenching, isn’t it?” Wears rips in her tights and learns to recite Sylvia Plath poems from memory. Smokes stolen cigarettes and tries her best to look older; lets a sophomore boy put his hands up her skirt and then cries with her head in Nadya’s lap. Tells her that she can feel his hands all over her. The teacher sits Ari behind the pretty red-headed girl in English: the one who’s hair smells like cherry blossoms and always raises her hand the highest. Gives her extra points on her vocabulary tests. Watches the rhythmic motion of her slender arms and the girl wrote in clear cursive letters on the whiteboard and wonders how it would feel to be wrapped up in her. What it would be like to receive hand-written notes in perfume-sealed envelopes filled with her monogrammed stationary. Ari and her friends hang out at the “tracks” now; cleaned out the old train car that was long-abandoned when they were kids. They spend time tagging up the walls, sitting on second-hand furniture they found for dirt cheap over at Southside Thrift. Hung up movie-posters haphazardly on the cracked walls and laid down an ugly, old carpet that their neighbor Mrs. Lai threw away after the divorce. Dima mentions that he threw a brick through the window of the abandoned house down the way; he takes Ari and his sister Nadya and tells them everything he thinks he knows about the place. Mr. Circle pairs Ari up with Iris Tate to be partners for the science fair, and it’s in researching the water cycle that Ari finds herself being asked if she’s ever thought about kissing another girl.
Arielle Katz was stuck somewhere in the middle.
Her and her friends were in between two sides constantly at war. They were the poor Northsiders, Southsiders who didn’t make the cut. Idling between two worlds that didn't particularly care for them. Mom told Ari that she was filling out her leotards a bit too much; she had cigarettes for dinner every day for a week. Always been an ‘A’ student. Gets into heated debates with the Jones boy about that the theme of the novel really was. Smokes weed in the bathroom at school before taking the SATs; still gets a 1400 though. Ari has a habit of leaving sloppy kisses on her best friends cheeks whenever she got tipsy. She learns to relish in her feeling of invisibility; likes the lack of expectations she has to uphold. TA’s her mother’s fourth period French class, always makes sure she’s the one who corrects Cheryl’s papers. Marks the top of each of her tests with a delicate red star. Ari makes friends with one of the nicest boys on the Southside; learns about the time that he died, but also didn’t die, and asks him how that made him feel. Goes thrifting with Nadya to find vintage slip-dresses, spends the rest of the night taking Polaroid pictures for her best friend to give to the boy with the motorcycle. Ari buys a box of tattoo needles online and makes Dima be her guinea pig. Turns out she’s pretty good at it. Hangs dried flowers on her walls. Makes Nadya laugh so hard that her sides hurt.
Spends more time at the tracks than at home. Stops answering her dad’s phone calls. Gives her mother a gold ring she found when treasure-hunting but Dima starts to wonder if the things they found really ever belonged to them. Ari can’t beat Nadya at a drinking contest, but she’s coming pretty close. Knows that her older brother had connections for just about everything, so she takes advantage of that quite often. Puts a white little tab on her tongue and offers her friends “The Body of Christ”; snickers as the two cross themselves. Finds herself spending a lot more time with boys from the wrong side of the tracks; realized they had more in common than they thought. Ari started to wonder if this was what it felt like to belong somewhere, to not just be floating somewhere in the middle. Forges her mother’s handwriting — tells the secretary that all of the Katz siblings have a dentist appointment— takes her not-so-little brothers out for ice cream at Pop’s instead. Splits an 8-ball with Nadya: they’re locked in the master bathroom at Reggie Mantle’s house but neither one of them know why exactly they’re there. Can never seem to grow her bangs out. Asks Nadya to pierce her ear with a safety pin. Gets her short story published in the paper by none other than Jughead Jones himself, they still kept up their friendly rivalry, though. Ari doesn’t expect Cheryl to be one of the many students in Madame’s classroom at lunch, but there she was. Apparently Ari’s mom mentioned her name to Cheryl, told the redhead that Ari would be the perfect French tutor for her. The rest of the hour is spent with the two girls sitting side by side, their arms touching as they hold open the textbook for the chapter about conjugations. Neither Nadya nor Dima think too much of it, and the three of them get high under the bleachers that day at lunch.

The Draped Gown: The Blue Silk Charmeuse
Here is the second of three options for a dress I will make for a fall wedding. I am pondering my choices in between learning to Zoom my classes online and worrying about the virus. Sometimes you just need to think about something more cheerful, so here goes.
This is a 1940s draped style from Decades of Style which re-produces vintage patterns, and they recommend doing a test garment and so do I. It features an asymmetrical neck-line marked with a clip or brooch or perhaps an embroidered feature at the right shoulder. It give the illusion of being a wrapped and tied dress, but those were avoided in mid-century. Designers realized wrapped dresses could be awkward and usually only featured them for beachwear where they were worn OVER shorts or a bathing suit in anticipation of being untied and tossed off. Here the illusion of the wrap is increased by the long slit at the hemline at the left side seam. Such a draped style needs a fabric with a fluid hand and charmeuse in silk is perfect, both fluid and with some weigh to it.
Notice in the line drawing how the tying feature pattern piece is actually laid over the bodice and skirt and then sewn down onto them. This method of connecting fabric pieces with convex or concave curves and angles was favored in the past and I believe it creates a stronger garment. The alternative is to reinforce the seam line (or just inside the seam line) with short machine stitches, then clip into the fabric at the sharp angle or around a curve up to those stitches, then machine stitch the two pieces together carefully. Of course, the clipping of the fabric makes the seam more vulnerable to shredding. Here, instead, you ease in the curved line along the seam allowance, pressing with your iron, and possibly also using a basting line of long stitches you have run near the cut edge in order to achieve the correct shape to lay over the other pattern piece. If you do decide you need to clip your curve a bit to make it fit into position, at least any tension in the seam line is shifted a bit further away from that clip and so shredding is less likely to occur. I hope I explained that well enough--the point is overlaid seams are a good idea when you have serious curves or sharp angles in your pattern pieces.
This dress was clearly designed for the sophisticated woman of 30 years or more. Draped styles were not made for very young women at this point in time as they were considered too energetic to pull off the rather languid carriage such dresses require. Quick movement would make the draped parts bounce around. Which is why I think I will save this project for a dress for the theater or symphony. I can’t imagine kicking up my heels at a wedding in this dress, beautiful as it is.
You can find this and some other lovely vintage sewing pattern reproductions here: https://www.decadesofstyle.com/collections/1940s-sewing-patterns/products/4011-1940s-point-made-gown

VNTY-Presentation process
Laura and Zaina were in charge of putting together the presentation. We split the slides up deciding who was covering what me and Shanice were in charge of the product slide. I wrote up a few notes for the slide chose so images to send to Laura for her to put them together.
Notes:
This is Vanities spring/summer collection providing comfy, elegant two piece sets and dresses. The fabrics used for this collection are waffle Jersey, giving the two piece a soft non restrictive feel, perfect for everyday wear. Bamboo silk a vegan alternative to silk. Giving your clothing a airy lightweight feel. And chunky cotton knit giving you warmth and comfort on those chilly spring days. Why do we use bamboo silk? The process of real silk is produced by silk worms meaning they’re being killed in the process. It’s also a is very time-consuming and intricate process reasons for its high price range. However bamboo silk is made by crushing fibres of bamboo by the help of natural enzymes meaning it’s very sustainable and vegan.
Here are our products… the first two piece is made from waffle Jersey in the colour vintage pink.. It’s a wrap top with tied bow detailing at the side paired with these wide leg trousers.
Next we have this dress made from bamboo silk in the colour palm green. It’s a halter neck slip dress with a slit detailing.
And the last two piece is made from chunky knit cotton in the colour butterscotch. It’s a long line skirt with a ribbed waist band paired with a high neck jumper with rubbing details.
Here are most of the slides which Laura had put together I liked the design of them all they all fitted with our brand logo and colour scheme. The customer, packaging and product slides did have the pie chart survey information on them backing up our reason for our choices and how this will impact on our customer. Each slide is kept simple with minimal writing and visuals so you get more of a feel of our brand.
On the promotion slide we even have a list of influences we will use to increase customer interaction and sales.
On this design slide we have clearly shown our products place next to there technical designs.
On this price slide we show you how we have calculated the price using our luxury materials this would also be good for the customer so see so they can have an insight.
Our brand identity slide clearly shows our logo and font.
Our vision and purpose slide shows you our brand covers issues for example lifestyle from the pandemic making it easier for your everyday life and finding clothes. We stand for sustainability and aim to make our brand as sustainable as possible. And we create clothing to show self love, elegance, comfort and freedom.
For this future plans slide our idea is to build up the brand so we can work with bigger influences having meta verse models for our online store which would also save money in the long run. And introducing a male Collection to our brand.
