Small trips to Ústí & Praha and my birthday in Plzeň
27.07.2024
Zdravím vás, drazí!
I don't even want to say it, but my last full month in Plzeň is coming to an end - and suddenly I'm 19 years old and 11 months of voluntary service are over. I know I've mentioned it many times, but I have the feeling that the last few weeks in particular have gone by so quickly. This was probably due to the many new experiences I had and the beautiful moments I was able to witness and that's why I would like to tell you more about them (even if it will be difficult to mention everything).
July started with a very exciting event that took place for a whole week. I don't know if any of you have ever heard of “orienteering”. The sport was definitely something completely new for me and that's why I was all the more surprised when I found out that I was allowed to volunteer at the Junior World Orienteering Championships. “Orienteering, usually called OL for short, is a running sport, where several checkpoints are set in the terrain and must be found using a map and compass. The runner chooses the route that is best for him. Orienteering therefore requires not only physical fitness but also a high level of mental performance.” Since I not only helped set up the area but also stood along the runners' routes at drinking stations, I was able to experience this strength just described as well as the runners’ determination, their nervousness, and at the same time the focus they had during the run. And what can I say, I was extremely impressed by their willpower and perseverance and even though the weather wasn't great that week, the organizers and all the helpers and volunteers managed to organize an unforgettable event.
I spent the following long weekend with my sister in Ústí nad Labem which some Czechs also call the “Frankfurt of the Czech Republic” so we didn’t have high expectations, to be honest.^^ But when we arrived on Friday, we were quite surprised by how nice our district was and immediately felt comfortable in our hostel. On that same day, the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship took place, in which Germany played against Spain and unfortunately lost 1-2 after an exciting overtime. However, we didn't let that stop us from being in a good mood and the next day, in sunny weather, we went on a city tour and a short hike to Střekov Castle, where we then relaxed with a delicious lunch and a cool drink. In the evening we headed to the northern district of the city, “Klíše”, where we had an iced coffee in the same called Café Klíše at 10 p.m. After we had checked out the next morning, we made our way to the city museum, where there was an exciting exhibition about the well-known author Ottfried Preußler, whose works we knew from our childhood. There were also many interesting historical exhibits and so we left the museum with many new impressions. Afterward, we enjoyed coffee and cake in the beautiful "coffeeup" and then we both took the train back to Plzeň, where my sister spent a few more days with me. She also joined the following hiking trip -with my coordinator Ivona and her daughter Kiki and some of the Adeto girls- which ended up being a very nice experience.
The following Friday I took the train to Praha, where I spent another wonderful weekend. We had a very nice apartment in the trendy Žižkov district and even though I thought I already knew most of the city, I was surprised at how many new places I visited this time. Among other things, we were in "Grébovka", a park in the Vinohrady district, which was particularly impressive with its beautiful "Grotta". We also visited the “Výšehrad” castle and then strolled along the Vltava in the sunshine. When the weather was bad, we visited the "Národní filmové muzeum", which particularly impressed us with its great effects, interesting information, and interactivity. Of course, we couldn't miss out on visiting the increasingly crowded John Lennon Wall again, and we also happened to come across the smallest alley in Prague nearby, which we could only walk through when the traffic light was green. ;D On the last evening we went to the nearby "Kostnické náměstí", where a dance evening accompanied by very nice DJ music took place. We just watched and admired how well the people could dance while drinking cocktails and enjoying the sunset. Afterward, we went to another bar and finally fell into bed, exhausted but very happy! Before we went home on Sunday, we visited the nearby island “Štvanice” and then went to the art gallery “Veletržní palác” and finally had a refreshing drink at Café Parlor, near the bus station. And although I haven't mentioned all the stops we visited this weekend (because otherwise that would go beyond the scope haha), these mentions alone show how diverse and beautiful Praha is and that you can see something new every time you visit the city.
And guess what, I'm not even done with July yet, because now I'm only going to tell you the most exciting part. Okay, to be fair, it wasn’t as exciting as expected haha but therefore even more beautiful. I’m talking about my, or rather OUR birthday, which took place on the 19th of July. I am very grateful that I was able to spend this special day with my twin sister and a close friend, who arrived in Plzeň a day earlier. We had a birthday brunch in the morning in one of my favourite cafés, before I gave them a little tour around the city, and in the afternoon we met Ivona and Kiki at "Le Frenchie" for coffee and cake. Afterward, we ate some ice cream (I had "pivo" for the first time - tbh it tasted better than expected) and then we drove home again in the late afternoon. In the evening we cooked the best Pad Thai and ended the day with deep and funny conversations. Saturday we enjoyed the sunny weather at the lake, played volleyball and card games, and in the evening we headed to the city centre again because my friend Eva really wanted to try "smažák" - and she was definitely blown away haha. Hereafter we ended the evening in the “Mlýnská stouha” and the next morning I already had to say goodbye” to my sister and friend again. I am very grateful for the wonderful time I had with them both and that they (together with Ivona and Kiki) made my birthday here unforgettable. A little fun fact on the side: my colleague Jakub's birthday is also on July 19th, so it was definitely very funny when we congratulated each other on Friday. ;)
Sooooo, what can I say, July was somehow different than the other months before, everyday life at work was completely new and many small and big moments made the month unforgettable for me. I only saw my seniors once and it will be strange to say goodbye to them in August, but I have already assured them that I will come back to Plzeň and I am definitely going to keep that promise!

I'll check in with you one last time before I go home on the 10th of August. Let's see if I can even find the right words then...
And without further ado, cheers to the last two weeks or how they say it in Czech "Na zdraví!" ;D
See you VERY VERY soon,
Laila :)
