Ciliegiolo is a black grape variety originating in the central area of Tuscany, but now also cultivated in other regions of Italy (Liguria, Marche, Abruzzo, Lazio, Puglia). It owes its name to the color of the berry and to one of its primary aromas, which recalls cherry. Currently there are about 5000 hectares of vineyards cultivated with Ciliegiolo in Italy. The wine produced from the Ciliegiolo grape was often used in the past for cuts with other wines, including the Sangiovese, to which it gave a greater alcohol content, softness and freshness of fruity aromas. It can also be vinified in white or rosé to produce very fresh and fragrant wines, or it can give excellent sweet wines. I enjoyed this great Ciliegiolo by Gagliardi Vini from Matelica (Le Marche Region), vintage 2015. 14 alcohol degrees for this fragrant, full-bodied and persistent wonderful red wine.
