my take on Villain Peri

He’s more tragic than evil, he just wants his brother back, he wants his life to be better and he wants to fix the corrupt fairy world.

he still loves his parents and even still thinks of Irep as a friend but he has a mission and he can’t let it get ruined.

(Basically Peri hates fairy world and wants to destroy the council in order to make it a better place, Jorgen is shaking in his boots rn fr /j)

ngl i 100% thought peri would be an antagonist

he's the first fairy in thousands of years, born directly under the lineage of what has to be the most powerful fairy family line in current existence

(cosmo is a von strangle, and also the very reason fairies stopped having babies in the first place. he's incredibly powerful and nobody talks about it for some reason. it's clear peri inherited that destructive potential)

the second he was born, entire fairy species (including his own kin) were out to get him to use his volatile magic for their own selfish goals. he's nearly kidnapped thrice, and almost ends the universe on the same day

the threats keep coming, and he's being dragged to countless adventures that put him at risk. he literally ceases to exist more than once

anyway, i wouldn't be surprised if some form of expectations were placed upon him growing up. maybe not by his family, but he's famous (a teacher described him as such once); in fairy world, he's automatically adored and celebrated by adults and peers alike, which foop antagonizes (and tries to kill) him for

cosmo and wanda would, realistically, of course try to shield him from all this, but no matter what they do, he's inevitably isolated

people either want to use him, put him on a pedestal, or is a universally infamous human godchild who will forget all about him in a matter of years

(cosmo and wanda becoming godparents and learning (choosing) to eventually let go of their kids is one thing, but it can be assumed poof was still a young, underdeveloped child by the time timmy (+chloe, for what it's worth) got his memories wiped

and he sees that timmy's able to live his own happy life without him in it. he lost his brother just like that, and there's nothing he can do despite all his godly powers)

there's so, so many ways he could've gone wrong

thus, my initial thought was that peri was going to be a somewhat petty, "spoiled brat," and him becoming a godparent would be the result of spite or rebellion, which cosmo and wanda would feel entirely responsible for. I HATE MY PARENTS!! yada yada yada

it was a pleasant surprise to see all those clips of them loving each other. and it's not even because i doubted for a second that cosmo and wanda are bad parents, it's just what you usually expect when seeing shows from the 2000s, even if it doesn't make sense

all things considered, i'm very glad they went for the lighthearted silly family trope. not every show needs such conflicts, and showing healthy dynamics are better for kids overall

still, i find it interesting to think about if they'd gone down another route instead. i love me a pathetic cringy villain who tries (fails) to hate the people they love the most

OK so here's a rant I guess.

Something I keep seeing all over in discussions about Peridots limb enhancers is "I hope she gets them back and then decides she doesn't want them". Like it would be some kind of symbol of self acceptance if she made that choice. Maybe "loving yourself the way you are" could also be be using enhancers again and never going back. If they make her feel more like her authentic self then that IS her authentic self. If not skip them I guess but how the heck would the enhancers mean she would accept or love her true self less.

Then we have the "but she has metal powers now, she doesn't need them". She has the metal powers sure but remember that tractor beam thing she used to have? How she used to be able to levitate not only metal but ANYTHING with the enhancers? and thats only one of the things she could do with them.

If Garnet care about the strength of the team wouldn't she WANT Peridot to have her enhancers back? Would it not be a priority of the entire group after she officially became a crystal gem? Why not at least reveal to her where the enhancers were dumped and give her the chance to look for them? She's Peridot, she could probably build a submarine or drones that scan the ocean floor for metal or whatever.

Them treating her wierd like this makes me wonder if they even trust or respect her. Plus in a way it is potentially dangerous. Because imagine, fucking imagine, if she somehow finds them herself in spite of them revealing nothing. If perhaps Lapis finds them for her. I mean they dumped them by the galaxy warp right after Peridot was poofed and i'm pretty sure she could potentially figure out what area would be a good place to search for them. If she realizes that they have been there all along and the CGs could have told her but chose not to do so, what then?

Why wouldn't she be pissed? and she would have all the right in the world to be.

Peri wishes to see his mom and dad a lot but knows he can’t so he just silently accepts it while hurting inside

Peri mostly spends their time in the human world, looking for ways to “save” fairy world

Jorgen has to stop Peri but doesn’t want to hurt them, it would hurt too much

the Fairly Council sees Peri as a threat to be rid of, others will disagree though

Peri hides away whenever he’s in fairy world, he doesn’t want to be confronted right now

Cosmo and Wanda don’t know that Peri has gone down this path…yet

So the ¨Best of Luck¨ has quite a lot of going on and could have worked better as second part episode but it still shows well the aftermath of the Operation Birthday Takeback with Dev lashing out and blaming Hazel for ¨stealing¨ his father's attention from him.

We see that Dev went back to his own self and he seems to be kinda worse than he was at the start of the season. He demands for Peri to grant wishes that could ruin Hazel's day or make him win the paper-rock tournament. Peri tries explaining to Dev that he can't do that because of the rules. The two get angry with each other, making Peri go away to i assume would be Fairy World.

On a side comment i was surprised to see Peri still with Dev after this episode after the ending from the last one? I guess it is because Peri is still Dev's godparent, making Peri stay with him. However, we still see that there is a lot of tension between them and they have a fight, so their argument in previous episode still carries weight on here.

While Peri is away, Irep (Peri's anti-fairy) takes the opportunity to become Dev's godparent. Irep thinks that Peri quit being the kid's godparent and takes advantage of Dev's desire to break the rules and his hatred for Hazel to bring chaos on the school.

Dev asks Irep to be let him into the rock-paper competition again and bring bad luck to Hazel. The rest of the episode is about Hazel dealing with all this bad luck and finding a way to counterattack it, all the time without knowing it was happening because of Dev.

Dev manages to win the tournament and tries rubbing it on Hazel's face, only to get praised by Hazel. He gets angry at seeing that he couldn't make Hazel miserable as he wanted and ends up revealing that he has been working with Irep to cheat in the competition and give her bad luck.

Dev asks for Irep to grant him more ¨illegal¨ wishes. Cosmo and Wanda have a magic duel against Irep, causing chaos all over the school's entrance. Around a minute later Jorgen shows up with Peri and reveals that Peri didn't quit and he was in fact taking a break from Dev.

Jorgen undos all the wishes that Irep granted and throws Irep back into the anti-fairy world. Everything returns to normal and Peri is still Dev's godparent. Based on a line from Peri, it seems that Peri was aware that Irep could take advantage of him being missing and he decided to keep an eye on Dev because of this. It is strange why he didn't show up sooner if that was the case. Maybe he didn't check on Dev until some time later when the real chaos started? I don't know.

Near the end of the episode Hazel tries talking to Dev to see what his problem is, in response Dev pushes her away and insults her, making Hazel get angry at him in return and probably cutting him off for the moment. You can see that there is a moment that Dev appears to hesitate when Hazel is talking to him only to go back to his cold self. I think he was likely believing that Hazel was ¨faking¨ being nice to him + still feeling upset for Dale paying more attention to Hazel. He still doesn't Dale doesn't care about him and prefers lashing out and blaming Hazel or the fairies for it.

The episode ends with him leaving and asking his machines to search more information about the anti-fairies, setting up for future plot threats of him teaming up with Irep again or other anti-fairies.

In Best of Luck we see Dev falling into a more antagonistic-villain path, with Irep taking advantage of his anger and desire to break the rules. He is really out to make Hazel miserable- both for believing she ¨faked¨ their friendship all this time and Dale not paying him attention. It could be seen as him trying to make Hazel miserable as she ¨made¨ him feel in Operation Birthday Takeback. From Hazel's part, she tried reasoning with Dev like she did back in the museum episode but Dev is too upset to consider talking to her. Hazel is probably going to have a similar feeling of anger against Dev in the upcoming episodes, unless they are somehow able to talk things through.

Peri and Irep are both complete opposites but not really in a good and evil way.

If you delve deeper into the Wiki and the cartoon series, you can see that they BOTH share both good and bad traits. For example, Foop is one of those antagonists who try to seem pure evil, but of course he is not exactly like that. From this, you can conclude that Peri also has bad traits(since they are opposites), which is confirmed in the Wiki.

Poof/Peri likes violence?? So it turns out that Foop/Irep, on the contrary, does NOT like violence???(that means Anti Cosmo doesn't like it either? Like father, like son. Both fails as the pure evil XD) I think that this can be explained from Foop’s point of view. I think that he deep inside possibly does not like violence and tries to hide it by showing the opposite. On the contrary, Peri likes it but tries to prove the opposite and in adulthood tries to adhere to the rules while hiding it. Thus, they both have their own little quirks. In fact, they both thereby adhere to moral gray as a hero(Peri) and as a villain(Irep).Well that’s make scene.

We can also conclude that the kinder fairy is, the more evil their anti-version is, and vice versa, the more evil fairy is, the kinder their anti-versions are (Peri and Irep are something in the middle).

And who do Peri and Irep end up with? Peri- A positive, beloved fairy who has become a hero in the eyes of many, but inside he has something cruel and chaotic (which he tries so hard to hide?). While Irep is an inveterate pessimist, unnoticed by many and unlucky, pretending to be pure evil, but inside he has softer sides that he tries to hide(his’s typically cartoon villain. I love it 👍). And you know what? Now I understand why at the end Dev preferred Irep as his godparent over Peri. After my analysis, they surprisingly had some similarities. Interesting..

🧚🏼‍♂️ He was so caught up in his own grandchild, that he didn't realize that Hazel also had a fairy. He only picked up on it when Hazel started getting better things and sometimes bad stuff would happen to Devin or his wishes wouldn't come true.

🧚🏼‍♂️ He envies you, because you got a good kid, while he got a relatively mean one. While he cares for Devin, he can be such a pain.

🧚🏼‍♂️ He kind of wants to talk to you, to get another fairies insight, but something always blocks him.

🧚🏼‍♂️ You only knew about Peri because of him a special baby. The only baby born in over 20,000+ years. You had heard rumors, but you were surprised when meeting him

🧚🏼‍♂️ You're annoyed by his presence. You have never hated a child like you hate his grandkid

🧚🏼‍♂️ Though, there is a part of you that thinks that Dev might have a crush on Hazel. You don't want to think of the similarities of your relationship with Peri to the one Dev has with Hazel
