Vista de Alicante. 1811. Estampa calcográfica. François Liger (dib.) y François Nicolas Barthélémy Dequevauviller. Museo Naval. Continue reading…

Runaway Star Alpha Camelopardalis Image Credit: André Vilhena
Explanation: Like a ship plowing through cosmic seas, runaway star Alpha Camelopardalis has produced this graceful arcing bow wave or bow shock. The massive supergiant star moves at over 60 kilometers per second through space, compressing the interstellar material in its path. At the center of this nearly 6 degree wide view, Alpha Cam is about 25-30 times as massive as the Sun, 5 times hotter (30,000 kelvins), and over 500,000 times brighter. About 4,000 light-years away in the long-necked constellation Camelopardalis, the star also produces a strong stellar wind. Alpha Cam's bow shock stands off about 10 light-years from the star itself. What set this star in motion? Astronomers have long thought that Alpha Cam was flung out of a nearby cluster of young hot stars due to gravitational interactions with other cluster members or perhaps by the supernova explosion of a massive companion star.

A Time Machine in our Hands
One of the many advantages of reading is to travel around worlds, civilizations, and historical times through the pages of a book. Thanks to Literature, we can use our empathy to put ourselves in the shoes of characters with struggles we relate to or with a completely different life and social status than ours.
There is a certain period of time that unfortunately still resonates in our daily lives, and that is the slavery time, in this work I will focus on that time in the USA. As English major students, we see the good and bad sides about each of the different cultures we learn on our classes. At some points, it is impossible to dissociate our own feelings from the text we are reading. In this aspect, slave narratives give a hard feeling due to the injustice portrayed in these works.
Some examples we find in Literature are even autobiographical such as Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass an American Slave, and Solomon Northup's Twelve Years a Slave works.
However, even some novels in which the main focus is not slavery we can see how it affects the society and the characters to a point that makes it difficult to just read without any sense of criticism to the book and even extends it to the author, that is the case of the well-known Gone With the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell when the Old South is portrayed in a romantic view.
Recently, I have started to read Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars, a sci-fi/fantasy book whose story is placed initially in Virginia, after the Civil War, however, the period before it is briefly mentioned which gives that uncomfortable feeling to the reader with a minimal knowledge about its context.
In cases where historical fictions are placed in conflictuos times, it is like we can see our History through a mirror or we can be teleported to the place and time of these stories, so we can reflect of the choices of the characters and our own choices.
To wrap up this essay, my advice is take these works not as forbidden reads but as books to be read with a critic view and its historical background in mind; as a lesson about our own society and how to overcome those times to never let them happen again.
