Yoongi’s hands were trembling on his lap. The longer he waited, the more sweaty his warm palms got.

He would’ve enjoyed the atmosphere he was wrapped up in at that very moment, really. If it weren't for his irritated nervous system completely isolating him from the world outside of his mind, his being.

Outdoors, under the sparkling night sky, Yoongi laid on the grass with his lover by his side, stargazing. A blazed fire pit closely by their feet, paired with the splendid view of the mountains and the lake surrounding them, that was the kind of atmosphere he'd been preparing for his girlfriend for the past two months.

The rythmic, pulsating sound of night crickets chirping somewhere in the distance added a nice shade of color to their painting.

Perhaps, renting that vacation house for a few days was the one of the best decisions he'd made for his lover, but his plan was hanging off his entire body like some heavy metal armor, and it almost felt as though the small ring box hiding in his pocket was close to exploding at any moment.

Turning his head to the side, the sight of his girl smiling so brightly as she gazed up to the sky soared his heart up. Yoongi loved people watching. It’s almost in his nature, being a quiet, introverted person in his very core. He loved admiring people the most when they were busy with the things they loved the most, the things they found mesmerizing and beautiful the most. He loved watching people being people.

He loved it more when people were his person, his girl. And when she told him a few weeks ago about her love for stars, the idea popped in his head, and he couldn't help but make a secret promise in his heart. A promise that he'd make her spend one of her best nights under the shining bright sky, with him by her side.

So, when her eyes met his staring ones questioningly, he realized he'd bsent-mindedly uttered her name out loud.

That's when he took a deep breath in, felt the chill night air filling his chest up, and knew it was the right moment.

He dipped his hand into his pocket, feeling the hard box with his sweaty fingers. “I've been planning this for a really long time.”

Her questioning gaze turned confused when he sat up, attentively curious, but she let him speak. It only made him blush, though. And he tried to brush it off by looking down at the fist only he knew what's hidden inside of it.

Between his shyness and her amused chuckle, he pressed on his brain to function properly and carry his mission out.

“I had everything figured out. From renting this place, to setting this fire up. Yet, as I sit down here under the stars, with you right in front of me…this is all I can manage to do.”

With trembling, long fingers, Yoongi carefully and slowly opened the small box, presented it to the girl.

He watched her eyes leaving his to land on his hands, on the ring sitting prettily right in the middle of the box. In a matter of seconds, she stood up and gasped. The way her resting face snapped into a shocked one and her hand flew to cover her ajar mouth almost had him barking a short laugh out, but Yoongi smiled nervously nonetheless.

“Oh my god…!” She started screaming, jumping around in her place with so much excitement and glee. Yoongi couldn't decide whether to be grateful that her reaction helped quietening a lot of his nerves down, or burst out in laughter. Either way, his cheeks ached as he grinned so widely, too relieved and happy to even pop the question to his lady.

“Damn, you really were waiting for it!”

He waited patiently, letting her have her moment. His heart never slowed down, however. It beat so fast that he could swear he was getting slightly dizzy.

It didn't take too long for her to—momentarily—calm down, allowing the man who's been staring every so lovingly at her to finish what he started.

“Hold on, im supposed to be on one knee.” he said, but she stopped him right away.

“Youre doing just fine. Go for it, I don't care.” She took his free hand in hers and beamed at him. Yoongi was long since gone, by that point.

“I don't know what to say anymore. I'm usually a very careful guy.” He gulped timidly, “I'm too wary to take huge steps like this one. But somehow, whenever I'm with you, I always know that I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I'm just… too sure to be reluctant about it.

“So, __, will you marry me?–” before he could even finish the last syllable of his little speech, she yelled out a series of ‘yes, yes, yes, yes!’ and jumped right into his arms.

Yoongi thought that all puffs of air left his lungs and that he stopped breathing as soon as the first ‘yes’ eagerly escaped her lips.

His arms wrapped up around her so tight, his eyes closed shut as he buried his face in her shoulder, and the stars shone bright above their heads. A silent key witness of yet another new stage of their love.

Summary: Tech surprises you one morning with uncombed hair. You can't help yourself.

A/N: Another ficlet from my notes app. Maybe 'Ficlet Friday' will start becoming a thing. I'll write part two if there's enough interest. You can read my other ficlet here.

You hear Tech enter the cockpit before you see him, his gait a familiar rhythm to your ears.

It’s second nature to swivel your chair around to greet him, a smile already curling at the corners of your mouth, but then you're met with a visual that gives you pause.

Tech's hair is... slightly askew. 

As he draws nearer, you detect loose, wispy spirals sticking up around the band of his goggles. He seems unperturbed, the rest of his appearance neat and orderly as usual. It’s… unlike him, to say the least, and your fingers twitch in your lap as he settles into the piloting seat next to you.

“You had a question about the databoard?”

He begins his routine survey of the the center console, beginning with the navigation computer, his fingers tapping on the screen to view the remaining distance between now and the next mission destination. He pauses when the fuel gauge shifts onto the screen, no doubt taking in the current state of the Marauder’s oil and fuel levels.

It takes more self-control than you realize to gaze back at his face, his stare currently focused on surveying the control console glowing in front of him.

Do you tell him?

Maybe he’s experimenting, trying out a new style. But that seems outlandish, considering he doesn’t seem to put much stock into personal style in general. He’s more pragmatic about his appearance. As purposeful as he is, a large part of you thinks that this has to be a mistake. 

Tech says your name, his tone mingled with confusion.

Kriff.

You were staring.

He’s frowning at you, his eyes doing a clean sweep of your features as you try to summon an explanation of sorts.

You display your mastery of eloquence when you gesture ambiguously towards him.

“Uh.. your hair looks… different.” 

Heat rushes to your cheeks when he falters, his brows furrowing for a moment before he sweeps a hand over his head.

“Ah,” he says, and you swear you see a tinge of red across his cheekbones, “another consequence of sleeping in late.”

He makes an effort to smooth it down, but you spy a stray curl that’s adamant on falling across the top of his forehead. He continues to miss it and you eye the strand, feeling called to assist him, as if it’s beckoning you to run your hand through it. 

“Tech,” you say.

He looks up with a hum. Through his goggles, you spy a curious set of brown eyes and something else inscrutable in his gaze. It’s enough to spur you forward, bringing a hand up before you register the action and you attempt to brush the curl back with his other locks. 

You’ve noticed that he's usually routine with his trimming habits, but the last few missions have been consequent, failing to provide much free-time within the last two months.

And to your secret delight, you find that you like this specific trait about him.

It's adorable, you think.

The curl fails to stay in place despite your efforts but then against your better judgment, you continue to caress Tech's hair, enjoying the thick texture contrasting against the softness of the pads of your fingers. 

He surprises you then by sighing, the sound almost inaudible as he leans into your touch.

For a moment, you forget to breathe, too busy relishing in the way he closes his eyes, his expression softening. It isn’t lost on you how intimate this gesture is, and you wonder what’s going on in that head of his; how does he interpret this, the way you’re combing him with your fingers? Is he... as nervous as you are in this very moment?

Content, even?

It’s silent, save for the lull of hyperspace in the background and the occasional mechanical whirr from the control console. You’re certain he can see the redness blooming across your cheeks, but perhaps the dim lighting and the cast of hyperspace is masking your expression.

A wave of sheepishness overtakes you and so you lean back into the co-pilot chair, bringing your hand to your chest, cradling it close.

When his eyes flutter open, he looks down as if to consider something before pinning his stare back to you. 

An intensity settles in that gaze.

You worry that you've upset him.

A rock sits at the pit of your stomach as you wait for him to scold you, or even reprimand you for the obtrusion into his personal space.

Instead, his tongue darts across his lips, wetting them before he asks, “Was that pleasant for you?”

"...pleasant?" you echo, uncertainty creeping into your voice. It's suddenly harder to think straight, your pulse quickening and thundering, which provokes a flush to spread across your chest. Words evade you as you try to conjure an answer for him.

He tilts his head down once, his eyes never leaving your's.

You could make up an excuse and say you don’t know what came over you. That it was merely an intrusive thought, but…

He’s far too astute for that.  You've never been good at lying anyway.

Maybe it’s time to come clean. 

Your fingers clench against the fabric of your trousers. 

“It was,” you say. You try to swallow, your mouth dry and your tongue sticking when you force out the next question.

“Is that… fine?”

You glanced behind him at the crowd that was forming behind the police barricade and hated that he was right. Even still, you had to bite down on the retort that was dying to surface, knowing that if you let it, it would be accompanied by several four-letter words that your superior was not likely to appreciate.

“Come here,” JJ said, wrapping an arm around you, and walking you out of earshot of your teammates.

“Why would she do that?” you asked, fighting back tears. “Why would she go in alone?”

JJ’s expression softened. “You know why. She’d never leave a child in danger if she could help it.”

At that moment, you hated your girlfriend’s compassionate heart. 

JJ reached a hand up to her earpiece, listening for something that you couldn’t hear, and smiled. “Emily has the girl. There’s no sign of the unsub, and she’s on her way back out.”

You breathed a heavy sigh of relief. You’d see her soon, and then your heart would be whole again.

You turned toward the building, your eyes jumping between each set of doors, wondering where Emily would emerge from.

It gave you the perfect view as the building went up in flames.

“No!” you screamed, breaking into a run before you could think about it. 

JJ’s arms were around you in an instant, holding you back. Morgan rushed over to assist her as you tried to fight out of their grasp.

“Let me go!” you sobbed. “Let me go! Emily! Emily!”

“Y/N,” another voice whispered. “Y/N, wake up. It’s okay.”

Your eyes flew open, and you pressed a hand against your racing heart. The bedroom around you was dark, but you’d know the soft scent of the woman next to you anywhere. 

“You were having a nightmare,” Emily murmured, stroking your hair. “You were screaming my name.”

Heat rushed to your cheeks, and you were grateful to the darkness for concealing it. “I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to wake you.”

You rolled on your side to face your girlfriend, who was propped up on an elbow, looking at you with a mix of love and concern. 

“It’s not your fault,” she said. “I get them, too. Do you want to talk about it?”

You nodded, and Emily took your hand. 

“It was last week’s case,” you whispered.

“The bomber?” she asked, and you nodded.

“You didn’t make it out in time. The building went up with you in it.”

“I’m sorry,” Emily said. “I’m so sorry for scaring you. I wasn’t thinking, and I know now if the roles had been reversed—” she stopped herself. “I wouldn’t be able to bear it, either.”

“Promise me,” you replied. “Promise me that you’ll wait for backup in the future. I know there’s always danger, but the thought of you facing a situation like that alone again paralyzes me.” 

“I promise,” Emily said, squeezing your hand. “And I’ll make it up to you.”
