Corpus Speaker Sound
This recording features all of the 24 unique voices that eminated individually from one of 24 downward facing speakers. The voices created a chorus of recordings, reading texts composed from the intersections of found fragments, phrases underlined, and slips of words, creating a layered, complex and open context through which the blankness of the paper moved.

Individual Research
Performance, sound & film
Performance
Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali creates many movies that overlaps with performance and sound. In particular, I want to elaborate on the song Lahu Munh Lag Gaya from his film Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (2013). It is a take on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (1595). Although this film has many aspects I do not agree with, its set, music and wardrobe design really fascinates me.
One of the first posters of Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (2013) taken from Wikipedia
If one looks at the song from the film Lahu Munh Lag Gaya (this is where the two characters Ram and Leela first meet), the dancing is extremely performative even though it is based within a film. This is a common trait in many Bollywood films. The choreography is matched with the sound/ music and it is extensively rehearsed. What interests me the most is how the costumes contribute and emphasize the movements in cohesion with the music and performative nature of the dance. I love the embroidery, colours and style of the outfits they are wearing as it fuels the performative experience. It is a very playful and sexually tense atmosphere signifying the start of Ram and Leela's attraction towards eachother.

Furthermore, the dance is repetitive and ritualistic. This connects to my practice in terms of the ritualistic/repetitive nature of making garlands and looking at textures or colour to create a certain language. This song is a performance within a narrative. It really excites me, particularly the narrative of wild, crazy love that is represented as eternal or everlasting. The entire song speaks towards their forbidden love within the film. This is emphasised through the red colours in the song. Essentially, it represents bloodshed or chaos their relationship holds. Within this song, there are numerous performative elements that contributes to the film's storyline.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films have had many controversies regarding the representation of religions, genders or traditions. However, I admire the set design, wardrobes and mainly the songs within the films as I find them to be the most performative and intriguing.

Sound
Anne Hamilton’s Table (2013-14) really interests me in terms of sound and the documentation of its process. I enjoy the relationship between movement, actions and the close up shots of the hands in relation to the sounds created. The bouncing, chiming nature of Table calms and comforts me.
Table (video still)
2013-14
Dimensions vary
Table was inspired by “Table of Contents”, a piece composed by David Lang. Hamilton wanted to highlight the effect of subtle movements in creating sound and synchronisation. Many of the shots within Table are a result of Hamilton’s vision to follow the movements with low-resolution surveillance cameras. Lang’s piece is performed by percussionists Susan Powell and Joseph Kryger. The relationship between hearing, sensing and space is of key importance within this piece.

2013-14
Dimensions vary
The intense and accelerating pace of the sound pairs well with the rapid manner in which it is documented. I feel that as the video progresses, the sound becomes more constant, faster and overpowering. The movement of the camera stresses them as the camera reacts off of them. I enjoy the aspect of potentially expanding this work where mundane objects are used to create noise. Furthermore, how sound can be arranged or placed within a sequence to create patterns or repetition.

In terms of my practice or interests, I enjoy the aspect of using objects to make sound (even though the items used in Table are instruments). I also enjoy the tactility Table in relation to the hands and the objects which creates the sound. I admire the close up of the hands and the way it is documented from beneath the table. I think the process in which the sound is created is extremely captivating. I admire the intimacy and sensitivity of this piece.

Film
Christian Marclay's Telephones (1995) depicts a new way of constructing scenes within the medium of film. I am mainly fascinated by the appropriation within Telephones to create something new.
Telephones (film still)
1995
Video (black &a white, colour and sound)
Duration: 7:30 mins
Telephones is a film where various footage of people using and interacting with telephones are strung together in a sequence. The individual footage is miraculously placed together where they BLEND with each other. It comments on how we constantly interact, communicate and "process information and entertainment". I also think that it indicates towards how as people, we endlessly search and are in need of human interaction in order to survive.
Telephones is an approach to film that really excites me in terms of appropriating other footage. I admire the seamless and effortless nature of how the scenes are edited and placed together. Marclay makes the process of making of Telephones entirely uncomplicated.
In terms of it's appropriation, I enjoy the possibility of how commercialized films can be reused and redefined within a contemporary art context. Telephones emphasizes the versatility of film as a medium.

Telephones further signifies how film can be used to document mundane practice and interactions society experiences. I enjoy the highlighting of a simple act of dialing a telephone.
I chose Telephones because I'm interested in using other footage to create a film or video work. I feel that living in a postmodern society, everything is constantly being recycled.

Telephones in some aspects is a film that I feel is constantly relevant. Mass media has a overwhelming presence in everyday experiences, and I would like to explore this in terms of film. I think it would be exciting to create a new narrative by appropriation. Telephones has really changed my perception of how film can be constructed.
