Working on that gAmE fEeL baby.

I’m trying to add some personality even in the mechanics, which is why if the player really screws up on the power meter you get a message that says “GRANNY” and the ball rolls super slowly down the lane.

I still think this interface is a little clunky but it does seem like a big improvement over what I showed last week. Mainly I can’t quite figure out what to do with the arrows above the power bar. I think it’s a pretty clear way of indicating where the ball will end up going, but it can be a little distracting and feels like it’s crammed too close to the power bar. Utilizing the screen space available without creating  visual clutter is proving a bit tough. Maybe i’ll push the arrows under the other layers to really position them as if they’re on the actual lane itself instead of floating in UI imaginary space.

Next up I’m making a pinsetter animation, and then I’m going to work on camera movement and screen shake to really make it feel good to hit those darn pins.

I'm trying to make dialogue feel more naturalistic, so I added some triggers that can add dynamic lines if you walk away (and then return) mid-conversation.

You can also now "overhear" people talking when you walk close enough to them. Their conversation will show up in the dialogue box and automatically scroll through until they finish talking or you walk away. 

This is the kind of stuff I see in triple A games a lot and occasionally in indie games that really draw me into the worlds more. The more the environment and other characters react to your actions, the more I believe that I’m playing in a real, living place. 

Uncharted 4 and Red Dead Redemption 2 make dialogue transitions feel pretty natural and I’m surprised more indie games don’t attempt to do that stuff, especially in games without voice acting.

So. Much. Art. Left. To. Draw.

This week I finally finished some much-needed reprogramming of the way the bowling pins are displayed and positioned, so I was able to add camera shake and set up a different camera “angle” for the closeup shot.

Still gotta iron out the kinks (notice how the pins ~pop~ into place when I set the power of the ball) but it’s already running much more efficiently and will make things much easier for me in the future.

I’m gonna spend some more time finalizing character models soon because I want to be able to draw them from every angle and start animating them so the game world feels more alive. But I think I need to work out a better programming-to-art ratio so I can get at least a bit of both done each week.

The dialogue system also needs to be overhauled to be more versatile and easier to edit, so I want to get that in soon to eventually make the “quest” system. I have it all planned out I just need to actually implement my pseudo-code.

3/100 days of practice || Oftentimes, we see the finished product, but not the process. Learning a piece is like gaining a new friend. You start as strangers, and you get to know each other. Then you go through trials together and finish strong. In the end, you develop a strong and unique bond. At this point, I'm still getting to know this piece and the story it has to tell. As much as I want to put a deadline to it, I think I'll take my time with this one. We don't want anything to steal the fun away, do we? _______________ Although this part has the same melody as the previous one, the shift from eight to sixteenth notes in the left-hand challenges me. I probably need to coordinate the right hand's timing and press the right notes on the left hand.
