Comic book creator Todd McFarlane talks Spawn reboot, working with Ozzy and competing with the giants

Todd McFarlane has not forgotten the vow he made to Calgary back in 2017.
At the time, the comic book artist, producer and toy entrepreneur was a guest at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo and was asked about the long-gestating reboot of Spawn, which had spent years in developmental purgatory. He told the audience at the Stampede Corral that the film would hold its premiere in Calgary if he gets it “off the ground.
Fast-forward six years later McFarlane says the film is back on track. A-list writers Scott Silver, who co-wrote the 2019 hit Joker, and Malcolm Spellman, who created the Disney+ superhero series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, are currently working on the screenplay. Jamie Foxx has long been attached to play the lead role, a superhero/antihero that McFarlane first created at the age of 16 in his parents’ basement near Crowchild and 24th Avenue N.W.
The 1992 comic book debut, which came out on McFarlane’s Image Comics, sold more than 1.7 million copies and the Spawn series holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running, creator-owned, superhero comic book title. There was a 1997 live-action film with Michael Jae White, which grossed more than $100 million, and an Emmy-winning animated series that ran on HBO from 1997 to 1999. The reboot has been in the works in one form or another for years.
“On the movie front, hopefully – fingers crossed – by the middle of this year we should be making a big announcement that we found our studio, we made our deal and potentially, as part of that deal, they’ve given us our production start date,” says McFarlane. “Really, all fans care about is ‘When can I go see it?’ But at least I’ve got to be able to say ‘This year. We’ve got the money, we’ve got the backing and we’ve even got a start date.'
When it does come out, McFarlane still wants to hold one of the premieres in his hometown.
“Let me tell you right now, if I possibly can, I’m putting it into the contract,” McFarlane says. “It might be the dealbreaker. And I get two premiere spots. I live in Phoenix, I think the Phoenix people will come out in droves because they did the first time we did Spawn. I think they will come out in droves and have a good time in Calgary. That’s it. There it is: If you don’t give me that, then I pull this entire deal. I’m going to see if I can negotiate that.”
McFarlane was back in Calgary this week visiting family. On Sunday, hundreds of fans showed up at Video Game Trader in Lake Bonavista for an autograph session. In 1981, the William Aberhart High School grad left Calgary at the age of 18 on a baseball scholarship to Eastern Washington University, where he studied art and design. Within a few weeks of graduation, he got his first comic book job for Marvel. He would go on to illustrate for both Marvel and DC, drawing for Batman: Year 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk and co-creating the Spider-Man villain/anti-hero Venom.
But he is arguably still best known for creating Spawn and for co-founding Image Comics in 1992, which also became home to Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore’s Walking Dead comic-book series. In 1994, he revolutionized the toy industry with the realistic action figures he created for McFarlane Toys. In 1999, he won an Emmy for the animated Spawn series and earned a Grammy nod for directing Pearl Jam’s animated video for Do The Evolution. The following year, he won a Grammy for directing the video for Korn’s Freak on a Leash.
Late last year, he returned to the medium to direct the video for Ozzy Osbourne’s Patient Number Nine, which resulted in a lengthy feature in Rolling Stone magazine about McFarlane’s work in music videos.
“The request came from (Ozzy’s wife) Sharon Osbourne,” McFarlane says. “I knew her from the past. We had done some stuff with toys and comic books with her and had always done well. In the pre-preparation for shooting, I was dealing mostly with the record label and Sharon. I’m sure she showed everything to Ozzy to get the sign-off. The day of the shoot, that dude was a pro. It’s one thing I’ve always been super impressed with for all the music videos I’ve been involved with. When you say ‘Action,’ all of them are performers. They know what to do when they are on stage. This switch goes on and they just do it. At that point when we shot it, I think it was about a week before his back surgery. He just had pretty extensive back surgery and was living in severe pain. You could see he was in pain and his mobility was limited and all that. So he paced himself, which is what a smart person would do. But when I said ‘Action,’ he turned into the 25, 30-year-old Ozzy.”
On top of the promising developments in the Spawn reboot, McFarlane has continued to find success in both the comic book and toy worlds. He credits the relatively small group of people he works with for the company’s David-versus-Goliath success.
“I’ve got a good core of people,” he says. “We’re scrappy. We’re the Bad News Bears of our industry.”
In 2021, Spawn beat out behemoths DC Comics and Marvel to become the No. 1 selling comic book. That same year, his Spawn spinoff titles – Scorched, Gunslinger Spawn and King Spawn – broke sales records. Last year, the crossover Batman Spawn title became a bestseller.
McFarlane Toys’ beat out Fortune 500 companies such as Hasbro and Mattel with the bestselling action-figure line of 2021. The company is currently licensed to create figures for Black Adam, Shazam, The Flash and Batman movies for the DC Multiverse, James Cameron’s Avatar, Dune and even Ted Lasso.
“Their size is their blessing and their curse,” says McFarlane about the giant corporations he competes with. “I could say the same thing about my smallness: it’s my blessing and my curse. Here’s the blessing: I can move quick, I can move fast. Here’s their curse: They are so big and bloated, they can’t move fast. If I see an opening, I can see that opening way faster than they can get into it. I’m not trying to compete, let’s say on the toy front, directly with what the giants are doing. I’m not trying to slay the giants, that’s not the victory. The victory is saying: Where have they left the gap?”

Season 3 (2011)
I'm not as big on Season 3 as other fans seem to be. The challenges and the runways have improved from the previous year, and Michelle Visage is a welcomed addition to judging panel, even if I don't agree with her critiques a lot of the time. Merle Ginsberg (who judged the first two seasons) kind of faded into the background for me. Michelle's debut puts us one step closer to the modern era. But we're not quite there yet. The finale is still filmed in the studio. The Werk Room still has a closed door (which makes an annoying squeaking sound every. single. time. someone opens it). The first acting challenge still involves like 2 lines of dialogue for each queen (and it wasn't even that funny). And the Snatch Game is still underwhelming. But my main issues with Season 3 is the lack of big personalities (except for Shangela) and the pacing. The drama was driven by the "Heathers" clique vs the "Boogers" divide. But I found the whole clique war annoying, and it's been confirmed that it was mostly fabricated for TV anyway. Although on the plus side, it's a diverse group that makes it far. Untucked, meanwhile, had the iconic Mimi vs Shangela fight and Tulle-gate. Still, Season 3 REALLY drags from the final 6 onward. It takes 4 episodes to fully eliminate two people. There's the first ever Double Shantay in the show's history. Carmen was brought back for no reason. And there was TWO Balls in the span of three episodes, with a Makeover in between. No wonder Alexis and Yara were burnt out at the Final 4, I was too from watching it. The final stretch of Season 3 just feels never-ending. And the finale music video was kinda boring compared to other seasons. It's also the worst season for lip syncs. There's only a handful of "good" ones - the rest are either trainwrecks or bland. There's Venus shoving Shangela around, Mimi picking up India, Carmen kissing a judge, Carmen and Raja doing soft core porn, and Yara breaking down on stage. You don't see stuff like this anymore.
Queens Ranking: 13. Delta Work Ughhhhhhh. Well, she did give Shangela the phone call. But otherwise, Delta was such a mopey, projecting "Debbie Downer" who never believed in anything she was trying to sell us. She was tentative in every acting/comedy challenge, including the stand-up routine that finally sent her packing. Her Cher in Snatch Game was terrible. Her runways didn't impress me. And she overstayed in the competition - top 7?!?! She just marginally escaped being in my bottom 3 in some weeks. Moreover, she was so sour about the people outside her clique. 12. Venus D-Lite She shoved Shangela around in the first lip sync while also throwing her ponytail into the audience. She had plastic surgery to look more like Madonna. Her Christmas outfit looked like arts and crafts. And she seemed to have a bitter attitude? 11. Carmen Carrera The annual RPDR cockroach who makes it inexpiably far in the competition for no reason. Carmen was so "one note". I got so tired of the same bathing suits on the runway. She was pretty lifeless in the acting/comedy challenges, but she somehow scraped by. Her J Lo in Snatch Game had zero laughs and should've been in the bottom. The fat suit in the stand-up routine didn't work for me. Her personality reminded me of the Plastics in Mean Girls. And then the producers brought her back at the final 5 just to be eliminated again in the same episode! Yeah that Makeover was trash. 10. India Ferrah Despite being picked up by Mimi, she is actually the most invisible queen of season 3. She showed off her boobs in most of her runways... and that's about all I remember. 9. Phoenix Also forgettable. Her whole storyline was about how she copied other people. She had the same entrance look as India (which had to be set up by production right?) She was accused of stealing Venus's idea to smash ornaments. And then she copied Gaga's moves in the lip sync. I didn't like either of Phoenix's outfits - the skirt was off in the Christmas one and her headpiece looked tacky in the Sci-Fi one. She was lifeless in the acting challenge too. 8. Mimi Imfurst What an utter trainwreck, but still an enjoyable experience to watch. She was a ball of nerves the entire time. She brought cookies in her entrance. She had a breakdown in the first episode. She overacted to the extreme in the episode 2 and 3 challenges - her acting was ridiculously over-the-top. You can see her face drop on stage when she didn't win the Sci-Fi skit. Her Holiday outfit surprised me, but then her next runway didn't work. And then there's the lip sync! Where Mimi stood in front of India and lifted her up like it's WWE. Oh yeah, and Mimi accused Shangela of having a sugar daddy on Untucked. 7. Alexis Mateo "BAM!" Alexis had some strong moments, but there's something holding me back from placing her higher. I didn't think her Fitness instruction was the best and I didn't get her stand-up routine either. But I liked her Alicia Keys in Snatch Game and she had the tone right for the PSA when no one else really did (well I liked Shangela's as well). But also, Alexis's runways were very hit or miss. She really just wrapped a blanket around herself for Cake Couture and called it a day. The military uniform one was on point though. Otherwise, Alexis was catty at times, but I didn't mind it much. Her walking out of the Werk Room at the Final 4 is understandable with how overworked the queens were. 6. Raja I have mixed feelings on Raja. She had this stuck-up/entitled attitude. She talked a lot of s**t about Shangela in particular; mostly resenting the fact that Shangela was doing so well despite being inexperienced and needing help with her runways. And there's also that Untucked episode where Raja mocks Shangela's way of talking which is... problematic. Like, yes Raja's runway looks are impressive (Christmas Couture, Marie Antoinette, Chocolate Cake), and I'm glad she made an effort in the acting/comedy challenges too. Her Tyra Banks in Snatch Game was weird, but her delivery made it work. Her stand-up routine was decent. And she was shockingly the best in a singing challenge. The PSA fell flat though. But geez I find it difficult to root for Raja as a winner. Not every look was a win for me either - I didn't like the "tulle" one, the birthday party one, or the leopard Makeover. There's also the Native American cultural appropriation look, but I think her intentions were in the right place since it was a statement about patriotism. 5. Mariah "I saw the fishnets and they were ripped". Mariah has this underrated personality in her confessionals, but that personality never really materialized in the challenges, which was her undoing. Mariah lacked energy whenever it came to the acting ones. And then she bombed the Snatch Game and fumbled the words to her lip sync. Oh, and she wrote "Congratulations Raja" in her lipstick message which was suspiciously erased. 4. Manila Luzon Hot take, but I think Manila's runways were better than Raja's. The pineapple! The bee! The money outfit! She should've won the Hair Ball too - all 3 looks were solid. She may have stumbled at the mid-point, but she gave us the best lip sync of the season, and then she was the strongest in the final episodes; even outperforming Raja in design challenges. Manila was my favourite of the final 3. But having said that, her comedy came off forced. I didn't really understand her winning the news reporter one over Shangela. She bombed the stand-up routine by talking about Sesame Street... yeah. And her PSA was crude, but it at least had a concept. Her Imelda Marcos in Snatch Game was my 4th favourite though. Otherwise, Manila was called "two-faced", but I actually thought she was the most likeable Heather *shrugs* 3. Stacy Layne Matthews "I DON'T WANT TO SEE NO MORE MOTHERF*****G CAKE". Stacy is just so genuine and endearing. She was picked on for no good reason. One of my favourite moments of season 3 is when Stacy surprised everyone by winning the Snatch Game. Her Mo'Nique was hilarious and she smartly followed Ru's (and Shangela's) advice on not doing Anna Nicole Smith. But my heart wept every time Stacy fumbled a challenge. Her cake outfit was really basic and she totally deserved to be bottom 2 for that. And then she started pulling out her hair onto the floor during the lip sync... 2. Shangela Shangela is the star of season 3 from the moment she popped out of that box. Everything seems to revolve around her. It's like watching a Drag Race fan stumble onto the show and making the most out of every moment. She was there to have fun and intentionally start drama whenever she could, but she wanted to do well too. She played strategically, even if tricking Carmen into giving her country didn't exactly work out. She never hesitated to call someone out. She had the Heathers FUMING because she was getting help on her runway looks. And she had a whole rivalry with the winner. Moreover, Shangela was a natural at the comedy challenges but... the runways were her downfall. The Christmas outfit wasn't together in the back, the cake outfit looked dirty, and the Hair Ball wasn't good. Oh yeah, and on Untucked she said transgenders shouldn't be competing... yikes. This was 12 years ago though, and I hope she's grown from that. 1. Yara Sofia Obvious #1 is obvious, but damn Yara had me laughing all season long with her craziness - the fitness advert, the weather reporter, the stand-up routine. Even the ridiculous Amy Winehouse impression in Snatch Game. I get why she was in the bottom for the PSA though - she misunderstood the tone for it. Also, Yara isn't just a comedy queen; she delivered some stunning looks on the runway too. The strawberry shortcake! The outfit made of hair! And I think Yara would've (and should've) made finale if she hadn't broken down at the F4 lip sync. But I can't blame her for that. The season was so long with so many design challenges at the end. I'd be burnt out too. And her money outfit had too much going on. But yeah, Yara Sofia is my favourite queen from the first 3 seasons. Favourite entrance: Raja Challenge ranking: 1. Fitness Video (Advert) 2. Stand-up routine 3. Hair Ball 4. Cake Couture (Design) 5. Holiday Thrift Store Drag (Design) 6. Snatch Game 7. Money Ball 8. Singing 9. "Jocks in Frocks" Makeover 10. Morning News Show (Improv) 11. "Champion" Music Video 12. "Queens in Space" (Acting) 13. Patriotic message (PSA Advert) Lip Sync ranking: 1. Delta Work vs Manila Luzon ("MacArthur Park") 2. Alexis Mateo vs Shangela ("Even Angels") 3. Carmen Carrera vs Shangela ("Believe") 4. Manila Luzon vs Raja ("Champion") 5. Alexis Mateo vs Stacy Layne Matthews ("Knock on Wood") 6. Alexis Mateo vs Yara Sofia ("I Think About You") (so emotional) 7. Carmen Carrera vs Raja ("Straight Up") 8. Delta Work vs Phoenix ("Bad Romance") 9. India Ferrah vs Stacy Layne Matthews ("Meeting in the Ladies Room") 10. Delta Work vs Mariah ("Looking for a New Love") CRINGE CRINGE CRINGE 11. Carmen Carrera vs Yara Sofia ("Mickey (Spanish Version)") 12. Shangela vs Venus D-Lite ("The Right Stuff") 13. India Ferrah vs Mimi Imfurst ("Don't Leave Me This Way") Season ranking so far: 2 > 3 > 1

Or like Bruce Willis' John McClane in the Die Hard series? Conversely is your character the humorous jokester like Adam Sandlers' Happy Gilmore. Does your character need to portray a tough emotionally detached hero like Marcus Phoenix in Gears of War Popular culture that come to mind when looking at your character. Review the character art concepts and start jotting down words that immediately come to mind whenĪnother helpful tool is to also write down the names of characters from other games or movies that you wish your character to sound like. Seem obvious but is often overlooked at this preliminary stage. What is the general mood and emotion that the character needs to convey? This may Think about what the character you will be creating should sound like. The one that will be directing the talent for your studio's next project the guidelines below will definitely help you to get a leg up on the often hidden world of voiceīefore the session even starts and before the recording studio has been booked it is vital that you have a firm and thorough understanding of what you hope to hear from I've recorded probably close to 700 unique actors as well as had my fair share in directing sessions and casting auditions. So what are some of the best techniques and tools out there that can help to you achieve a winning performance? In this article I'll let you in on over 10 years ofĮxperience in the studio. Publishers are realizing that employing a famous actor in their game may very well sell many additional copies just Not only can these actorsĭeliver a familiar voice but they also sell more games. In addition to this, video games are increasingly featuring well known and sought after actors to play lead voice roles. Superior surround sound immersive gaming experience, the voice acting in today's games is of the utmost importance. In order to compete with major hollywood films it is imperative that video games employ well written and detailed voices. Add to this the cost of the recording studio and staff like engineers and assistants and you can wind up with a very expensive bill at the end of the After all, top notch talentĬan be very expensive. Quite often voice directors are under a lot of pressure to coax the best performance possible out of the talent in the recording booth. Some of theīest voice directors out there, be it for film, television, or games, possess a firm grasp of the techniques and toolset that are required to communicate effectively withĪctors. It requires a lot of patience, empathy, and as much experience as possible to get it right. But I would say that it had little to do with their level of screen celebrity and more to do with the quality of their performance.Voice direction is definitely not a task for the under-prepared. Sure, actors like Keith David ( Halo’s Arbiter), Terrence Carson ( God of War’s Kratos), and Michael Ironside ( Splinter Cell) have added some real value to the games they’ve contributed to. One unnamed star received $500,000 for a single session, and another demanded $750,000 for his voice - and that was for an hour’s worth of work! Lev Chapelsky, the general manager of production company that contracts screen actors to do game voice work, says that it is common for these celebs to get paychecks in the high five figures for a single session. That’s not bad for half a day’s work, but big name celebrities are earning much more. Why game developers would pay more than they need to for celebrity voice actors is beyond me, but Hollywood actors are getting into the game business and coming away with five figure paychecks - for talking!Ī Reuters article says that voice actors are paid about $760 according to Screen Actors Guild rules.

Over the sound of G-Funk, the two then-biggest rappers in the world displayed all of their thug bravado. Snoop Dogg Tupac traded verses with fellow Deathrow label-mate Snoop Dogg on one of the standout songs from his 1996 album 'All Eyez On Me'. The song which introduced Tupac to the world, was about a 12-year-old girl who became pregnant by her cousin and threw the baby in the trash. 'Brenda's Got A Baby' Taken from his 1991 debut album '2Pacalypse Now', the thought-provoking 'Brenda's Got A Baby' was actually inspired by a real story he read in the New York Times. The track, which was released as a posthumous single from his 2001 album 'Until The End Of Time, features powerful interview excerpts from the rapper. 'Letter 2 My Unborn' Tupac displayed his amazing storytelling over a fast-paced song dedicated to his unborn child. The piano-based instrumental later became iconic in Hip-Hop and soundtracked countless freestyles. 'Ambitionz Az A Ridah' When Tupac was released from prison in 1995, he reportedly went directly to the studio and recorded his hard-hitting single 'Ambitionz Az A Ridah'. As a result of his impending incarceration for rape, he released his most thoughtful and personal album yet - 'Me Against The World' - which included a song dedicated to his mother. 'Dear Mama' In 1995, Tupac made history as the first ever artist to top the Billboard Charts while in prison. Chillingly, the official music video showing himself getting shot and going to heaven, was recorded one week before he was actually shot and killed in Las Vegas. 'I Ain't Mad At Cha' Sampling 1983 song 'A Dream' by DeBarge, the track was actually recorded on the same day Tupac was released from prison in 1995. The track, which samples Elton's 1981 song 'Indian summer', features the rapper discussing social politics over powerful production. Elton John Pac's only UK No.1 single came courtesy of a posthumous collaboration with Elton John in 2005. The rappers dream about a hypothetical heaven dedicated to thugs and gangsters, on the track taken from his posthumous 2002 album 'Better Dayz'. Phoenix Tupac showed his soulful, introspective side on acoustic classic 'Thugz Mansion' featuring Nas.

'Hail Mary' The final track from Tupac’s fifth album ‘The Don Killuminati’, hears the rapper torn between the street life and salvation, over chilling graveyard bells and a heavy bass line. Intended as a response to Biggie's 'Who Shot Ya', Pac displayed his signature aggression on the track. The Outlawz After being shot in 1994, Tupac retaliated by releasing one of the biggest diss tracks in Hip-Hop history, directed at Biggie Smalls and The Junior Mafia. The pair rap about Tupac's adopted city of California over some classic bass-lead production. Dre for one of the most iconic Hip-Hop songs of the 1990s. Dre Tupac linked up with fellow Deathrow label-mate Dr. The iconic song, which is an interpretation of Bruce Hornsby's 1986 hit 'The Way It Is', hears Pac rhyme about social justice over a piano sample. Talent Despite being released after Tupac died, 'Changes' remains one of the biggest hits in his catalogue. We have attempted to narrow down 20 of Tupac Shakur’s greatest songs, spanning albums such as ‘Me Against The World’, ‘All Eyez On Me’, ‘The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory’ and more. And despite being tragically murdered at the age of 25, the ‘California Love’ rapper left behind an unrivalled collection of music, including an astonishing 11 platinum albums.
